Easter 4 – Vocations Sunday Hospitality

Faithfulness

Wholeness

THIS COMING WEEK: The FLOWERS today have been given by Brian Walker and family, in loving memory of Mary on what would have been her 90th birthday. HOPE ON THE EDGE, which is a bi-annual opportunity to pray for local issues, is tonight from 6.30-8.30pm. This May, prayers will be for older people facing an uncertain future in our political climate, and three stories will be told as a lead into prayer. CHRISTIAN AID WEEK STARTS TODAY and this year the focus of the appeal is the West African country of Sierra Leone and the provision of maternity services there. Sierra Leone is reckoned to be the most dangerous place in the world to become a mum. Expectant women who live in villages often have to undertake a walk of three hours or more to reach a hospital or health centre in order to give birth under medical supervision. Very often the journey is made whilst in the course of labour. Unsurprisingly many babies do not to survive in these situations and many expectant mothers may also die at the roadside. This year’s appeal aims to provide more local health centres where mothers may be helped to give birth in safe and comfortable surroundings without having to undertake long and perilous journeys. To give some idea of what your donation could buy, £20 would provide a stethoscope to check on the health of mums and babies; £60 help to pay for a new roof for a health centre and £200 a delivery bed so women can give birth safely. Gift envelopes have been included with the service sheet this morning and we invite you to donate as you feel able. Please place envelopes in the collection basket today or on the next two Sundays. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you. MONDAY FELLOWSHIP this week will welcome Ann Cryer, who will speak about her life as an MP. Ann is also a member of our Cathedral Council and a member of the Cathedral congregation. Her talks are always most interesting so do go along if you can at 2pm to the Parish Room. Refreshments will be served after Ann’s talk. At the COFFEE CONCERT on Tuesday we will welcome Canadian pianist Carson Becke, who has performed extensively as a solo and chamber musician. Starting at 11am, Carson will be playing pieces by Edvard Grieg, Frederic Chopin and Alexander Scrianin, but why not come along at 10.30am and enjoy coffee and cakes before his performance.

The WEDNESDAY @1 ORGAN RECITAL welcomes this week Sarah MacDonald from Cambridge. The buffet lunch is from 12.30pm-12.55pm and the recital will start at 1pm. The buffet lunch is £4 and the recital is free, but there is a retiring collection. The Dr Rowan Williams events are NEXT MONDAY 20 May and are proving to be popular. To help us know how many people to expect if you can, please register your interest on bradfordcathedral.eventbrite.com Dr Rowan Williams is a former Archbishop of Canterbury and now Master of Magdalene College Cambridge. At the public square lecture at 3pm he will be addressing the contemporary and crucial question of ‘What does national identity mean these days?’ and there will also be an opportunity for the audience to delve further into this vital subject ……… and at 7pm - we will host the de Lacy Arts & Theology Lecture entitled ‘Poetry in the Making’, when Dr Williams, will look at what goes on in the writing of poetry, in various contexts across the centuries Refreshments are from 6:30pm and the Lecture will start at 7pm This is a wonderful opportunity to hear Bishop Rowan – do come if you can. Both events are free and we look forward to welcoming you. On Saturday 25 May at 7.30pm, the Orchestra of Opera North will present ‘A DAY IN THE LIFE’ – a musical celebration of life in West Yorkshire textile communities. Performances will be premiered around Leeds and Bradford and new pieces of music will be performed. Tickets are £10 plus a booking fee available on adayinthelife.info FAMILY ACTIVITIES will take place again during the next School Holidays on Tuesday 28 May 10am – 2pm. Join our guided tours for families at 11am or 1pm and let us tell you about this wonderful building. Why not try the self-guided Pelican Trail and look around at your leisure, spotting interesting things on the way? Or have a go at our paper craft activities: design your own stained glass window or heraldic shield. For younger children, there’s our stained glass window colouring. Drop in at any time! The CATHEDRAL CENTENARY EVENTS from May – August are in the new brochure which is now available. If you haven’t got a copy please pick one up today and take more to give to your family and friends. There are some fabulous and very varied events planned and there is bound to be something to catch your interest. One to mention perhaps is that on Sunday 30 June we are to welcome the Very Revd Dr David Ison to our Patronal Festival. It will be lovely to see and welcome him and hopefully Hilary, to share the weekend with us.

Cathedral Festival – Showcasing Bradford Cathedral Saturday 15th June from 11am till late Come and join us for our th 100 birthday day of celebrations. Try your hand at some of the games and crafts, enjoy good food, find out things you didn’t know about Bradford Cathedral and much, much more and then join us in a street party starting at 1919. There will be lots going on for adults and children alike and the day will finish with Night Prayer at 9pm. We still do need more volunteers though and even if you could help for just a part of the day or a few hours that would be so much appreciated. If you want to know more about how you could help please see either Charlie Murray or David Worsley or ring the Cathedral Office on 01274 777720. The day is going to be a wonderful event – don’t miss it. SUDAN – one of the Diocese linked with our own Diocese of Leeds. The next Sudan event is to be on Monday 10 June at 7.30pm at St George’s Church, Leeds LS1 3BR, when as well as an update on news and pictures from Sudan, it is hoped to welcome three Leeds based speakers. Ludia Shukai, daughter of Bishop Butrus Shukai, is a leader among Sudanese people living in Yorkshire, who takes a special interest in the Bible Training Institute in Omdurman. The Revd Dr Kevin Ward, who visited Sudan in 2018, is an expert if African Studies and church history and brings a wealth of knowledge to the interpreting of the life of the Church in Sudan. Our Diocesan Bishop Nick Baines recently visited Sudan to lead a conference on Freedom of Religion. Whilst there, he spoke with politicians, religious leaders, police and military representatives, and had contact with civil rights people in the early stages of the protests that have brought about the downfall of President Bashir. Our Diocese is linked with the Episcopal Church in Sudan, a church known for its strong witness and growth under oppression. It is a companion link, expanding and deepening our understanding of Christian fellowship. Inspired by our brothers and sisters in Sudan, we discover more of what it means to be a follower of Christ in the world today. Pick up a leaflet at the back of the Cathedral and do go along if you can. Refreshments will be served from 7pm. Parking restrictions nearby apply until 10pm, so please do allow time to walk from a car park or bus stop. PLACES OF WELCOME is becoming more popular with more people coming along to share in food and a chat, which means that more volunteers are really needed to help Canon Mandy. If you would like to help or know more please speak to her or pop along on a Wednesday between 3pm-4.30pm and find out more about this ministry of hospitality.

The FRIENDS OF BRADFORD CATHEDRAL are visiting Leicester Cathedral, historic current home of Richard 3rd, on Monday June 10th. Do go and have a look even if you didn’t make the official launch last week. LOST PROPERTY is building up again. If you have misplaced something the lost property is on the windowsill on the Gallery outside the offices. What is there will be kept for another week only and will then be disposed of. We do also have some car keys, which are in the main office, which someone MUST know that they have lost! **************************************************************************************
