NOTICES AND WHAT’S ON 15th March 2020 Lent 3 with Prayer Ministry Hospitality
Faithfulness
Wholeness
We are now two weeks into the season of Lent, which began on Ash Wednesday. Lent is the 40 days which come before Easter in the Christian calendar and is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. These 40 days are to be a pilgrimage of prayer and discipline that “we may grow in grace and learn to be your people once again.”
TODAY The Flowers in St Aidan’s Chapel have been given by Yvonne Fearnley in loving memory of her husband Gordon, for what would have been his 88th birthday on the 17th March. PRAYER MINISTRY will be offered today during the 10.15am Service. If you would like someone to pray with you either for yourself or someone else, this will be available during the Eucharist. BREAD AT THE EUCHARIST DURING LENT Have you noticed the change in the bread for the Eucharist during Lent? This symbolically reflects the penitential turn of our thoughts during the season, with rye being added, making the bread darker in colour and giving it a slightly bitter taste from the usual honey-sweetened, white, organic loaf. TODAY at 4pm, our Boys’ Choir will be joined by the Boys’ Choir from St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Bradford for a Choral Eucharist. Do come along if you can to hear and welcome them. THIS WEEK AND BEYOND At the WEDNESDAY@1ORGAN RECITAL this Wednesday we will welcome back Ed Jones. Ed was our Associate Organist, leaving last year to take up a post at Worcester Cathedral. It will be lovely to see and hear Ed again and do come along if you can. The buffet lunch, at £4, will be from 12.30pm and the recital, will start at 1pm. There will be a retiring collection in aid of the Organ Fund. LENT There is a selection of Lent books and Easter and Mothering Sunday cards in the Cathedral Shop, including the official Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent book ‘Saying Yes to Life’. You can also pick up a free copy of the new Church of England’s guide to Lent from the sound desk, with both an adult and a child version, alongside a new Prayer Booklet assembled by Prayer 4 Bradford.
THE LENT COURSE started last on Wednesday, this year with the theme of Pilgrimage. It will run also this Wednesday 18th and Wednesday 25th March, when we will welcome the Revd Canon Andrew Tawn, who is one of our Honorary Canons and the Diocesan Director of Clergy Development. The theme this week is ‘This is His Story: This is Our Story’ and next week will be ‘A Journey into the Heart of the Love of God’. Each session starts with refreshments from 6.30pm and the course will start at 7pm, finishing with Night Prayer at 8.15pm. A flyer with all the details is now available at the back of the Cathedral. CIVIC SERVICE - The Lord Mayor’s Civic Thanksgiving Service is to be held here at the Cathedral this Thursday 19th March at 5pm. This is a special service, which is held annually as a thanksgiving for the year in office of the Lord Mayor of Bradford and everyone is welcome. The Lord Mayor this year has been Cllr Doreen Lee and we have welcomed her to the Cathedral on a number of occasions during her year of office – please do join us if you can. There will be refreshments after the service. MOTHERING SUNDAY is always held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter, and this year is next Sunday 22nd March, when we will hold our Mothering Sunday Choral Eucharist at 10.15am. On this day we hold together two traditions. From our English past we give thanks to God for Mother Church and for the ways in which the church nurtures us and cares for us. From the more recent past we give thanks for our own mothers and for those who have mothered and cared for us. During the service flowers will be given out as a gift to all women present. CANDLE-LIT CONCERT Tickets are still available to mark Earth Hour with pianist Ben Comeau on Saturday 28th March with refreshments from 8pm and music from 8.30pm – 9.30pm. You can book your ticket (£5 plus booking fee) at https://earth-hour-2020.eventbrite.co.uk, at the Cathedral Office, or turn up on the evening. The ticket price includes a donation to Earth Hour. ANNUAL VESTRY MEETING & APCM The Annual Vestry Meeting and the APCM for this year will be held in the Cathedral on Sunday 29 March following the morning service. The Vestry meeting will be at 11-45am and the APCM will follow immediately after. Nomination Forms for the elections to Churchwarden, Community Committee member, Deanery Synod member and Parish Disability Representative are available in the Cathedral. The Deputy Wardens and Sidesmen are no longer elected at the APCM but will be appointed by Chapter. It is important that all these positions are filled so please prayerfully consider if you could serve in one of these roles and play a part in the life and work of the Cathedral. We are particularly short of Sidesmen so please give this your serious consideration and talk to a Churchwarden if you feel you can help to welcome people to our services. Alex McLelland The KEEPING IN TOUCH deadline for anything in the April issue is Wednesday 25th March and we'd love to receive your letters, articles, photos, prayers or anything else you'd like to share in this monthly congregational magazine. Please send things for inclusion to kit@bradfordcathedral.org or pass it to a member of the team.
CORONAVIRUS Until further notice we are suspending the administration of the common Cup/Chalice as well as physical contact during the sharing of the peace, blessing or "laying on of hands" as per the guidance from the Church of England. EASTER LILIES If you would like to give an Easter Lily in memory of someone, please put your name and theirs on the form on the Sound Desk. The cost is £4 per stem and please put your money into the Flower slot in the blue safe in the Shop area, making use of the yellow envelope if you are able to gift aid your donation. The flowers and the names of those they are in memory of will be displayed on Easter Sunday. THE ARTSPACE EXHIBITION ‘ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS’ by Ali Thistlethwaite started on Ash Wednesday and is in the north transept. It runs until the 12th June, so do go and have a look at Ali’s paintings, which depict encounters with God in artistic form, and pick up an information booklet from the desk in the exhibition area. RENEWAL OF GIVING 2020 Thank you to those of you who have returned your Renewal of Giving response form. It is very much appreciated. For those who have not, please feel free to pass the form back to a member of the clergy, or return it to the Cathedral in the pre-paid envelope provided. If you have not received the Renewal of Giving pack, these are available on the sound desk at the back of the Cathedral. Thank you. HOLY SOCKS In this year of Pilgrimage, we thought it would be fun to sell Holy Socks in the Cathedral shop! They come in three beautiful, biblical designs featuring; Jonah and the Whale, The Sheep and the Goats, and a Good News sock - 'how beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news.' The socks come in a presentation pack and make a lovely gift. They come in two sizes and are £6.50 a pair. They are available at http://holy-socks.eventbrite.co.uk or from the Cathedral office. Tickets are now available to see LINDISFARNE at Bradford Cathedral as part of their 50th anniversary tour. Tyneside folk-rock pioneers LINDISFARNE first came to the attention of the music world in 1970 with their debut album 'Nicely Out of Tune'. There followed a string of memorable albums and chart hits including 'Meet Me on the Corner', 'We Can Swing Together', 'Fog On The Tyne', 'Lady Eleanor' and 'Run For Home'. The concert is taking place on Saturday 19th September at 7:30pm. You can buy your tickets online at lindisfarne.eventbrite.co.uk or by visiting the Cathedral Office. THE CHOIR are looking to recruit boys and girls from the age of 7 to become cathedral choristers. Voice trials will take place throughout the day on Saturday 4th April 2020 at Bradford Cathedral. Each voice trial will last approximately 20 minutes.
