THIS COMING WEEK: The FLOWERS today have been given by Fiona and Michael Beevers as a thanksgiving for marriage. Canon Paul is presiding and preaching today at Harden during their vacancy, but will be back for the BRING & SHARE LUNCH at 12 noon after this morning’s service at his and Sarah’s home, No 3 Cathedral Close. Everyone is welcome to come along and to share in good food and conversation. The Dr Rowan Williams events are TOMORROW MONDAY 20 May and it’s not too late to say you are coming. If you can, please register your interest on bradfordcathedral.eventbrite.com, but if you can’t, don’t worry, you can just turn up. Dr Williams is a former Archbishop of Canterbury and now Master of Magdalene College Cambridge and at the public square lecture at 3pm he will be addressing the contemporary and crucial question of ‘What does national identity mean these days?’ ……… and at 7pm - we will host the de Lacy Arts & Theology Lecture entitled ‘Poetry in the Making’, when Dr Williams, will look at what goes on in the writing of poetry, in various contexts across the centuries Refreshments are from 6:30pm and the Lecture will start at 7pm This is a wonderful opportunity to hear Bishop Rowan – do come if you can. Both events are free and we look forward to welcoming you. CHRISTIAN AID this year focusses on Sierra Leone and the appeal aims to provide more local health centres where mothers may be helped to give birth in safe and comfortable surroundings without having to undertake long and perilous journeys, sometimes of three hours or more and very often whilst in labour, to reach a hospital or health centre in order to give birth under medical supervision. A donation of £20 would provide a stethoscope , £60 would help to pay for a new roof for a health centre and £200 a delivery bed so women can give birth safely. Gift envelopes are available this morning at the back of the Cathedral and any donation you feel able to make towards this appeal would be much appreciated . Please place envelopes in the collection basket today or next Sunday or in the donations slot in the blue safe. Thank you.
The WEDNESDAY @1 ORGAN RECITAL will this week welcome Ian Roberts from Newcastle . The buffet lunch is from 12.30pm-12.55pm and the recital will start at 1pm. The buffet lunch is £4 and the recital is free, but there is a retiring collection. On Saturday 25 May at 7.30pm, the Orchestra of Opera North will present ‘A DAY IN THE LIFE’ – a musical celebration of life in West Yorkshire textile communities. Performances will be premiered around Leeds and Bradford and new pieces of music will be performed. Tickets are £10 plus a booking fee available on adayinthelife.info FAMILY ACTIVITIES will take place again during the next School Holidays on Tuesday 28 May 10am – 2pm. Join our guided tours for families at 11am or 1pm and let us tell you about this wonderful building. Why not try the self-guided Pelican Trail and look around at your leisure, spotting interesting things on the way? Or have a go at our paper craft activities: design your own stained glass window or heraldic shield. For younger children, there’s our stained glass window colouring. Drop in at any time! ASCENSION DAY EUCHARIST is on Thursday 30 May at 7pm, when we will welcome the Right Revd Toby Haworth, Bishop of Bradford as our preacher and a specially formed music group will lead the worship. The service also marks the start of the ten days of Thy Kingdom Come. If you can, please register your interest on bradfordcathedral.churchsuite.co.uk What is THY KINGDOM COME? Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus and to help Light up the World. The Archbishop of Canterbury says: “Thy Kingdom Come is about praying for more people to know Jesus Christ. That means praying to be filled with God’s Spirit – and sent out into the world with the good news of radical, revolutionary love.” Taking place over the ten days from Ascension Day on 30 May – 9 June, around the Cathedral we will have prayer stations following different areas of activity across the City and District. You can find out more, and pledge to Light up the World, by visiting bradfordcathedral.org/worship/thy-kingdom-come/ The Dean ‘Visit and Pray’ Dean Jerry will mark the ten days of ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ by visiting and praying in the three Diocesan Cathedrals - Bradford, Ripon and Wakefield. He will be joined by Dean John at Ripon and Dean Simon at Wakefield. Each time of prayer will conclude with Choral Evensong. Anyone is invited to join him on this pilgrimage of prayer either for part of the way or at one of the Cathedrals, where he is hoping to arrive at the following times: Wakefield Cathedral - 30th May • 3pm Bradford Cathedral - 3rd June • 3pm Ripon Cathedral - 5th June • 3pm
MESSY PENTECOST For families on Sunday 9 June, from 12:30 - 2pm. Join us for fun activities this Pentecost, with food, crafts, Bible readings, singing and more. Create your own headband of paper flames ◊ Make a fire-wand and explore the Holy Spirit tunnel ◊ Write your own prayer dove to join our flock. There is no charge but if you could let either Canon Mandy or the Cathedral Office know that would be helpful so that we know how many people (roughly) to expect. SUDAN – one of the Diocese linked with our own Diocese of Leeds. The next Sudan event is to be on Monday 10 June at 7.30pm at St George’s Church, Leeds LS1 3BR, when as well as an update on news and pictures from Sudan, it is hoped to welcome three Leeds based speakers. Ludia Shukai, daughter of Bishop Butrus Shukai, is a leader among Sudanese people living in Yorkshire, who takes a special interest in the Bible Training Institute in Omdurman. The Revd Dr Kevin Ward, who visited Sudan in 2018, is an expert if African Studies and church history and brings a wealth of knowledge to the interpreting of the life of the Church in Sudan. Our Diocesan Bishop Nick Baines recently visited Sudan to lead a conference on Freedom of Religion. Whilst there, he spoke with politicians, religious leaders, police and military representatives, and had contact with civil rights people in the early stages of the protests that have brought about the downfall of President Bashir. Our Diocese is linked with the Episcopal Church in Sudan, a church known for its strong witness and growth under oppression. It is a companion link, expanding and deepening our understanding of Christian fellowship. Inspired by our brothers and sisters in Sudan, we discover more of what it means to be a follower of Christ in the world today. Pick up a leaflet at the back of the Cathedral and do go along if you can. Refreshments will be served from 7pm. Parking restrictions nearby apply until 10pm, so please do allow time to walk from a car park or bus stop. The FRIENDS OF BRADFORD CATHEDRAL are visiting Leicester Cathedral, historic current home of Richard 3rd, on Monday June 10th. The cost is £25, which includes comfortable coach travel and a guided tour of the Cathedral. The Friends of Leicester Cathedral will provide afternoon tea before we join in Choral Evensong. If you are interested in joining us, application forms are at the back of the Cathedral; alternatively please contact Jill Wright on 01535 634526 or email jill@woodchipcomputers.co.uk We are sorry to have to tell you that, following a recent safety inspection the CHURCH BANK STEPS have had to be closed. We know that this will be inconvenient and do apologise, but the safety of all our visitors is very important us and we have to follow the advice we have been given. The closure will be for the forseeable future and we are not able at this stage to give a date when they might re-open.
