NOTICES AND WHAT’S ON 22 September 2019 Creation 4 (Peace Sunday) Hospitality
Faithfulness
Wholeness
Today: First of all, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped with the Heritage Open Day last Sunday, when we welcomed over 100 people, many of whom would probably not have come to the Cathedral had it not been for the special day. The FLOWERS today have been given by Alex McLelland in loving memory of Vera. We also welcome the Revd Dr Clive Barrett, who is preaching at our 10.15am Eucharist today. Clive is the County Ecumenical Development Officer and Executive Secretary of the West Yorkshire Ecumenical Council and also Chair of the Peace Museum and we very much look forward to hearing him. After this morning’s 10.15am service there will also be the weekly ‘Just a Minute’ reflection, when anyone is invited to share just a minute’s reflection on the service. TODAY IS THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE and at Choral Evensong 4pm we will remember this. Do come along if you can and share in the special time. The REARRANGED NEW SEATING ARRANGEMENT is now in its fourth week and we would value all your comments. Please do pass these onto either the Clergy or Churchwardens. OUR HARVEST FESTIVAL is NEXT SUNDAY the 29th September at 10.15am when we will give thanks for the wonder of God’s creation. If you would like to bring some gifts of food as thanks for all we are privileged to have, these will be gratefully received during the service. Afterwards any fresh produce will be given to Inn Churches and tinned/non-perishable items, such as tuna in oil, spaghetti, basmati rice, tinned vegetables, biscuits etc, will be shared between the Bradford Foodbank and Abigail Housing. MESSY HARVEST is NEXT SUNDAY the 29th from 12.30pm – 2pm, when the time will be filled with bread making, Bible reading, songs and crafts. The bulbs which have also been donated, will be planted in the West End garden area and any donations of crocus and/or snowdrops would still be really appreciated so that we can make a wonderful carpet of colour in the Spring. Please hand these in to the Cathedral Office of any of the Cathedral staff. All are welcome to come and share in this time.
THIS WEEK: DOROTHY WALSH’S funeral will be held here at the Cathedral tomorrow (Monday) at 10.15am when the service will be taken by the Revd Paul Booth. SILENCE SPACE meets tomorrow from 1pm – 1.30pm in St Aidan’s Chapel. CARERS meet at 10am – 12 noon on Tuesday in the Parish Room. There are regular and new members of the group and anyone who is or who has been a carer is welcome to go along for company, chat, coffee (and tea) and crafts. The WEDNESDAY @ 1 ORGAN RECITAL welcomes this week Jonathan Bielby from Wakefield. The usual buffet lunch is from 12.30-12.55pm and the recital will start at 1pm. The lunch is £4 and the recital is free, but there is a retiring collection. Come and enjoy good music, good food, and good company. THE ALPHA COURSE continues on Wednesday from 5.30pm – 7pm. The weekly session, begins with a meal and is a relaxed and informative way to explore the Christian Faith. All are welcome, but please let Canon Mandy, any of the clergy or the Cathedral Office know if you would like to attend and have any special dietary requirements. This week it will be held in the Parish Room not in the main cathedral. INVITATION to Sarah Maybury’s licensing as a Lay Reader is NEXT SATURDAY 28 September at 1.30pm here at the Cathedral. Sarah wishes to thank members of the Cathedral congregation for their support and encouragement during these past three years of her training and everyone is welcome to attend and share this special day with her. Please do continue to pray for her as she serves the parishes of Great Horton and Manningham. BY THE HAND OF ….. ICONS EXHIBITION by Chris Czainski is still on. Do go and have a look at her work in the North transept and around the Cathedral. It is truly amazing. BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY SURVEY Andy McCarthy would like to say: “A big thank you to everyone who completed our recent survey. We had over 100 responses from a wide range of people and there were lots of really interesting ideas about how we might use the refurbished Parish Room to serve our local community - building on the great work being done through the groups already using the space. The survey will be very useful as we develop new funding bids to support the development of the Parish Room. We recently received £10,000 from the Sovereign Health Care Community Programme for the project, so we are close to £40,000 raised now. We still need nearly £100,000, but we will be working hard over the coming months to secure these funds. Any fundraising ideas from the
congregation are always welcome too! Once again, many thanks for your support.” BRUCE GRAINGER’S Funeral Service and Thanksgiving Service will both be on Monday 30th September. There will be a private family funeral at 11.30am. There will then be a Thanksgiving Eucharist at 2:30pm in Keighley Shared Church, which is St Andrew’s church – in the town centre at the end of North Street. There is a pay and display carpark next to it and Morrisons carpark just below. Dean Jerry will be taking part in this Thanksgiving Service. BRADFORD ON FILM Whether you are a born and bred Bradfordian, or a newcomer to this great city, then don’t miss the opportunity to be part of the ‘Bradford on Film’ archive screening. This flagship Bradford Cathedral Centenary event is brought to you by the Yorkshire Film Archive who have delved into their vaults to curate a special journey through Bradford’s rich film heritage, revealing the sights, sounds, faces, places, changing landscapes and industries, great events and everyday lives of people in Bradford from the 1890s to the 1990s. Tickets are £7 (+BF) are available from Eventbrite, or at the office. The FRIENDS ANNUAL LUNCH is on Sunday 20 October at the Oakwood Hall Hotel, Lady Lane, Bingley. JANE TARVER is doing 10,000 steps every day in September in aid of Cancer Research UK. She has been doing these, even whilst on holiday and if you would like to sponsor her, please sign the form on the Sound Desk. Thank you. STAMPS l have placed a large order with the Church Association for Sudan & South Sudan for commemorative stamps for you to use when you send Christmas cards (and throughout the year). They come in batches of 20s and 50s, first class or second class, and l have a few of the continental rate - usually you need to stick on two per envelope. Costs you the same as it would from the Post Office, but this way you are supporting poorer people! For more information, and to place orders, please contact Jane Tarver as soon as possible. Thank you - Jane. PEOPLE WANTED FOR POETRY We're looking to record a short video for one of the poems by our Poet in Residence, focussing on the environment.
