Wholeness
THIS COMING WEEK: The FLOWERS this week have been given by Joyce Mitchell in loving memory of Harvey, whose birthday would have been on the 26 June. INCOME DEVELOPMENT OFFICER Andrew (Andy) McCarthy has joined the Cathedral Staff as Income Development Officer and there will be the opportunity to meet him as he is formally introduced to the congregation during the 10.15am service today. Andy’s role is to generate income for the Cathedral and part of his specific tasks will be to try and secure funding for projects such as the Parish Room and improvements to access to the Cathedral. Do say ‘hello’ to him if you get the chance. SILENCE SPACE is tomorrow at 1pm. It meets in St Aidan’s Chapel for quiet and reflective prayer and is a wonderful opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle of day to day life in the peace and tranquillity of St Aidan’s and anyone is welcome. The STITCHING GROUP continues to go from strength to strength and is soon to embark on new projects for St Aidan’s Chapel, the Sanctuary and the Lady Chapel. It meets this Tuesday at 1pm and if you fancy having a go to share in these projects just turn up on the day or if you would like more information get in touch with Jill Wright on 01535634526. Why not join us on Wednesday for our WEDNESDAY@1 ORGAN RECITAL when Tim Wakerell from Oxford will be playing for us. The buffet lunch beforehand is from 12.30-12.55pm and the recital will start at 1pm. The lunch is £4 and the recital is free, but there is a retiring collection. It’s a lovely way to spend time enjoying good food, music and company in our wonderful Cathedral. The Cathedral’s PATRONAL FESTIVAL is next Sunday 30 June, when we will welcome the Very Revd Dr David Ison as our preacher at the 10.15am Eucharist. David is now the Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral in London, but prior to his move there he was Dean here at Bradford from 2005 – 2012. It will be lovely to see him and Hilary again and we know that he will receive a special Bradford Cathedral welcome. The Patronal Festival is special as it acknowledges the Cathedral’s Patron Saint, St Peter, who is included in our name of The Cathedral Church of St Peter Bradford. REFUGEE WEEK finishes today so do go and have a look at the exhibition in the North Transept if you can before it is taken down.
Next week is ARMED FORCES WEEK and to mark the start of this there will be a Flag-raising ceremony tomorrow, Monday 24 June at 11am in Centenary Square, when Canon Paul will be leading a short service and prayers. The week is to recognise and to show gratitude to service men and women, past and present and if you can go along tomorrow please do. MEMORIES! We still need your memories for our Centenary Time Line and there are more luggage tags in the exhibition area to fill in. Please put on the date or year if you can so that we can display your memory in the appropriate place on the timeline. LABYRINTH Have you noticed the labyrinth in the Cathedral grounds and wondered why it is there? A labyrinth is an ancient aid to prayer and allows all who follow its path to take time to pause, reflect and pray as they journey through it. It will remain until at least the end of August and more information and how to use it can be found in the leaflet at the pack of the Cathedral. Everyone is invited to take five or ten minutes to use the labyrinth to slow down, reflect and encounter God in new ways. The labyrinth is also available for group sessions and use by other churches. For more information please see or contact Canon Paul on paul.maybury@bradfordcathedral.org BRADFORD LITERATURE FESTIVAL which is hailed as one of the most inspirational festivals in the UK comes to Bradford Cathedral. Over 500 events will span iconic venues over ten days and we are hosting five of them. Booking for all the events is on www.bradfordlitfest.co.uk and booklets are available in the Cathedral. This is a free event so you can just turn up, but if you could register your interest on brafordcathedral.eventbrite.com that would help to give us an idea of numbers.
A CONVERSATION BETWEEN FAITHS on Monday 15th July at 7pm takes place in the Cathedral, when Qari Asim MBE, Head Imam at Makkah Mosque in Leeds, the Rt Revd Toby Howarth, Bishop of Bradford and Professor Michael Barnes SJ will discuss the role of faith in Bradford and how this is relevant across the United Kingdom. Qari Asim MBE and Bishop Toby will discuss the way Christianity and Islam contribute to a healthy society in Bradford and West Yorkshire, and how this learning can be seen in the UK as a whole, with Professor Barnes taking a wider view of what faith can offer into the public square of thinking. After the ‘conversation’ the floor will be opened to Q&A from the audience. This is a free event but to register your interest please go to bradfordcathedral.eventbrite.com ABIGAIL HOUSING’S food supplies are running low and they urgently need help to feed and support the destitute asylum seekers in their houses. Since Maggie Peel has moved on we've noticed that donations made at the Cathedral have dwindled considerably, but Alison Woolley is now ensuring that items we leave on ‘The Gallery’ are taken to the store. The following are in short supply and high demand: Food - rice (basmati), tinned fish (in sunflower oil), sugar, canned chickpeas, coffee, tea, honey, longlife milk, long-life almond milk, vegetable oil, ‘Country Crisp’ cereal; Toiletries -hand soap, shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, razors; Cleaning items refuse bags, washing-up liquid, toilet rolls, washing powder/liquid/tablets; all cleaning products. Abigail also needs a regular supply of tinned tomatoes (chopped), cous-cous, semolina, spaghetti, lentils, corn flakes, Weetabix, shampoo, and ‘treats’ like biscuits and chocolates and there is a current need for some one-off kitchen items: tea towels, two large saucepans and a hand blender. If you can help by donating any of these items your donation will be much appreciated. Thank you. MICHELLE SIMPSON’S Coast to Coast cycle ride is next Saturday, when she will cycle 150 miles from Seascale on the West coast, going through the Lake District via Hardknott and Wrynose passes and across the North York Moors to Whitby. If you would like to sponser her in aid of the Sue Ryder Manorlands and Wheatfields hospices. there is a sponsor form on the sound desk. Thank you.
and FINALLY ………………
– a huge thank you to everyone who helped last Saturday at Bradford Cathedral’s first Cathedral Festival. The day was a huge success with over 250 people coming into the Cathedral, some for the first time and the rain held off for most of the day. Thank you to all of you who volunteered to help, to staff who were involved in the organisation and planning of the day, to the speakers, Bishop Toby, Wahida Shaffi, Syima Asmal and Cllr Susah Hinchcliffe who formally opened the day for us and to everyone who came on the day to support the Festival. We had a very varied programme starting with Choral Matins and ending with Compline, but with food, face painting and fun in between. Thank you all – we couldn’t have done it without everyone who supported the day. We’re looking forward to next year already!
