FLOWERS The flowers in St Aidan’s Chapel have been given by Yvonne Fearnley in loving memory of her husband Gordon for what would have been his 87th birthday. They were moved into the Cathedral last Thursday for the Civic Thanksgiving Service. EASTER LILIES if you would like to give a lily in memory of a someone, please put £4 in the blue safe marked flowers, and write their name(s) on the list on the sound desk. WEDNESDAY @1 ORGAN RECITAL When David Turner from Edinburgh where he is Organist and choirmaster at Colinton Parish Church will be playing pieces by Guilmant, Ireland, Bach, Bridge and Smart. The Recital starts at 1pm and is preceded by a buffet lunch at 12.30pm. The lunch is £4 and the recital is free, but there is a retiring collection in aid of the organ fund. LENT COURSE The final session is this coming Wednesday 27 March at 7.30pm when once again Bishop John Pritchard will be speaking and this week his topic will be ‘Learning to do the same thing differently’. Each session stands alone and the previous two have been excellent so even if you haven’t managed to come to them do come to this one if you can and share in this final part of Bishop John’s Lent journey at Bradford Cathedral. Each evening finishes with Night Prayer and Everyone is welcome. BOOKS There will also be a bookstall at each of the Lent Course sessions and after the 10.15am Sunday morning service, where books by Bishop John and others will be available to purchase. Some of the books are at special discounted prices and there is quite a selection to choose from, including some for children. We are very grateful to Cornerstone Bookshop in Skipton, which has provided these books for us. We still also have a few of the The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent book ‘Reconciliation’ by Muthuraj Swamy left and these are also available on the bookstall today and during the week from the Cathedral office, at the special price of £9.00. (Usual price £9.99). Next Sunday 31 March is Mothering Sunday when we especially remember and acknowledge all our mothers and those who care for us. At the 10.15am Eucharist, we will welcome the Venerable Anne Dawtry, the Archdeacon of Halifax, who will be preaching . Anne is a member of our College of Canons and we look forward to welcoming her to the service. Please also note that the CLOCKS GO FORWARD next Saturday 30 March.
ANNUAL VESTRY MEETING AND APCM (Annual Parochial Church Meeting) The Annual Vestry Meeting and the APCM for this year will be held in the Cathedral on Sunday 7 April following the morning service. The Vestry meeting will be at 11.45am and the APCM will follow immediately after. Nomination Forms for the elections to Churchwarden, Community Committee member, Deanery Synod member, Cathedral Council member, Electoral Roll Officer and Parish Disability Representative are available in the Cathedral. Also, the Deputy Wardens and Sidesmen will be formally elected at the APCM. It is important that these positions are filled so please prayerfully consider if you would serve in one of these roles and play a part in the life and work of the Cathedral. We are particularly short of Sidesmen so please give this your serious consideration. At CHORAL EVENSONG ON SUNDAYS we are now welcoming curates from around the Diocese to preach at 4pm. Today we welcome the Revd Brian Greenfield from Sutton with Cowling and Lothersdale and next Sunday the Revd Steve Nuttall from Greengates and Thorpe Edge. Do come if you can and enjoy this special service, whilst supporting those during the initial stages of their ministry. KEEPING IN TOUCH please pick up a copy from the welcome desk or around the Cathedral, and if you’d like something in the April edition or have any feedback please email commsandevents@bradfordcathedral.org before this Wednesday 27th March. LAMPS THEATRE PASSION PLAY on Monday 8 April at 7pm, will be performed by professional actors, who will recreate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus in a moving and ultimately joyful retelling of the Easter events. WILLIAM MORRIS Today is the birthday of William Morris, who would have been 185 today! and with whom Bradford Cathedral has a particular connection. There are some fine examples of the early stained glass work of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Company in the Cathedral and Morris is regarded as the most influential designer of the nineteenth century, as well as being a writer, poet, scholar, translator, publisher, environmental campaigner and social activist. As the Parish Church of St Peter, there were originally two windows by Morris - the East Window which was put in in 1863 and the South Chancel Window which was installed in 1864. Following the renovations in the late 1950s, the original East Window was divided into three and is now the East Window of the Cathedral and the South Chancel Window was divided and placed in three different locations around the Cathedral, with the central panel becoming the illuminated "Salvator Mundi" window by the Sacristy and the two sets of saints being placed on the west walls of the transepts. The beautiful altar cloth in the Lady Chapel is also the work of William Morris. We are so fortunate to have these windows so do have a look at them and our other beautiful stained glass and appreciate their beauty and the skill of those who made them. Leaflets are available in the shop area for more details.
Reminder of the Cathedral Centenary Festival Day Saturday 15th June when Bradford Cathedral will be celebrating all day in lots of different ways. At 19:19 (19:19 specifically as we became a Cathedral in 1919) everyone will be welcome to our celebratory street party in the Cathedral and we are looking for a team of volunteers to help plan the party. If you are interested then please speak to Canon Mandy. Did you know that it is just 25 years since women were permitted to become priests and that the first group to be ordained was at Bristol Cathedral on Saturday 12 March 1994? To mark this, different Cathedrals around the country are holding special services and at Ripon Cathedral on Sunday 16 June a special Eucharist to mark this 25th Anniversary will be held at 3.30pm. The event is called ‘Hope of our Calling’ and everyone is invited and welcome to share in this special service of hope and celebration as the Diocese marks what was a fundamental and life-giving change for the Church of England. Please put the date in your diary.
