NOTICES AND WHAT’S ON 25 August 2019 Trinity 10 Hospitality
Faithfulness
Wholeness
Today The FLOWERS today have been given by John and Nora Whitham “in memory of our parents and Shirley.” TODAY we welcome the Choir from St Oswald’s at Guiseley to our 10.15am Choral Eucharist and also to Choral Evensong at 4pm. It is always a joy to welcome new choirs to help to lead our worship whilst our own Choir is on its annual summer break, and we look forward to meeting and hearing them. UNDERCLIFFE CEMETERY Today at 2pm The Dean will re-dedicate the mass grave containing the remains of 1688 people, which were moved to Underclilffe Cemetery when Church Bank was created. The Cemetery has an amazing history and some graves are of particular interest. During the work to restore the mass grave, for instance, the grave of Nancy De Garse, the nanny to the Brontes was discovered and there are many others of special historic interest. If you can go along to this short re-dedication please do. Tea and biscuits will be served afterwards. TOMORROW is Bank Holiday Monday and the Cathedral will be open only for Morning Prayer from 8.30am – 9am and Evening Prayer from 5.30pm – 6pm. The Dean is in Residence and can be contacted in an emergency on 01274 777727. This week we welcome Graham Thorpe who is joining us on Tuesday as Assistant Director of Music and Sub-Organist. Graham grew up in County Durham and for the past few years he has been working as a freelance musician. He has been an organ scholar at Guildford Cathedral and more recently at the London Oratory. He has also been broadcast on Radio 3. Graham will be playing the organ at the 10.15am service next Sunday, when we will also welcome back the Choir from its summer break. TURN OF THE WHEEL David Worsley’s pottery exhibition runs only until next week and if you haven’t yet had a look try and do so before it is taken down on 1st September. The pieces are available to buy and if you are interested in one please see David or contact the Cathedral Office. Any pieces will be reserved for collection at the end of the exhibition.
SUMMER SERMON SERIES During the summer weeks we have been offering a series of sermons and reflections on Sundays, based on the lectionary readings and the last one will be today (8am/10.15am)11th August to 25th August The Letter to the Hebrews (Chapters 11+12) (4.00pm)11th August to 25th August The Second Letter to the Corinthians (Selected texts) REARRANGED SEATING As mentioned in the July edition of Keeping in Touch, we will be experimenting, throughout September, with revised seating in the nave and a nave altar. The choir and clergy will also be in seats in the nave. This is to discover whether or not the choir is better able to lead the congregation in singing from their revised position. During this experimental month, we will be seeking your views on your experience. Canon Paul BELL RINGING TASTER SESSION is next Sunday at 11.30am. If you have often wondered about bell ringing and would like to have a go, why not join Mr Ron Crabtree, the Captain of the bell ringers, after the morning’s service to find out. You will have to manage the steps up to the ringing chamber though! ALPHA The Alpha course returns to Bradford Cathedral. The weekly 90 minute session, which will be a relaxed and informative way to explore the Christian Faith, will run from 5.30pm every Wednesday, starting on the 11th September throughout the autumn. Everyone is welcome, and each week begins with a meal. To book your place please contact the Cathedral Office, speak to Canon Mandy or any of the Clergy or email info@bradfordcathedral.org If you are going to join us, please do tell us if you have any special dietary requirements. ALPHA is also looking for volunteers to help with food and hospitality and with hosting the event. If you are interested and can offer one or more weeks, then please speak to Canon Mandy or one of the Community Committee. FAITH & PEACE From September Bradford Cathedral will be hosting an exhibition called Faith and Peace. This inspiring exhibition presents perspectives on peace from three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The exhibition runs from the 7th - 19th September and includes a workshop on Thursday 12th from 1-3pm (repeated 6:45-8:15pm). For more information, speak to the team, visit our website or find out more in September's Keeping in Touch, available from next Sunday. NEW EVENTS PROGRAMME Our new events programme for September - December is available now. Please pick up a copy to find out about what is going on for the rest of our centenary year and do take any extra copies for your friends, family, local businesses or any churches you have contact with. Your help in spreading the word of the Cathedral would be much appreciated. We are starting work on our events for 2020 so if you have any ideas or feedback for the new year then please speak to us or e-mail events@bradfordcathedral.org
ECO EXTRAVAGANZA Bradford Cathedral’s first Eco Extravaganza will take place on 19th October and we are looking for a large team of volunteers to help throughout the day. There are openings in the hospitality, set up and take-down and welcome teams and if you are able to help please speak to Canon Mandy, Phil Lickley, one of the Eco Group or let the Cathedral Office know. DONATIONS BOX Have you noticed the Cathedral’s new donations box by the North door? We have been considering a special box for donations for quite some time as we are very often asked by visitors where they can put a donation. The existing slot in the blue safe in the shop area is not particularly visible and we are hoping that by having a designated box, which states how much it costs to run/open the Cathedral each day, it will help people to give to us should they wish to do so. DOROTHY WALSH It is with sadness that we have to tell you that Dorothy Walsh passed away on 13th August. Dorothy had been on our Prayer List for some time and her funeral will be here at the Cathedral on Monday 23rd September at 10.15am. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this sad time. THE SIXTEEN .............................................................................................
Tickets are still available for the concert by The Sixteen on Saturday 14th September. The performance starts at 7.30pm and the doors will be open from 6.30pm. The Sixteen is an internationally renowned group and we are privileged to have them here at the Cathedral during our Centenary Year, when we are assured of a spectacular evening of music. VOLUNTEERS are also wanted to help with this event on the evening of Saturday 14th September and if you can help with ushering or hospitality roles at the event, we would love to hear from you. Please speak to any of the Cathedral staff or e-mail events@bradfordcathedral.org
STEELEYE SPAN We are also privileged to have been chosen as a venue for Steeleye Span as part of their 50th Anniversary Tour. Steeleye Span are an English folk rock band formed in 1969. Still active today, they are amongst the best known acts of the British folk revival, and were among the most commercially successful, thanks to their hit singles "Gaudete" and "All Around My Hat". These can be obtained from either the Bradford Theatres’ Booking Offices in either St George’s Hall or the Alhambra, by ringing the Booking Office on 01274 432000 or on line at https://www.bradford-theatres.co.uk/whatson/steeleye-span-in-concert SPRING BULBS We are wanting to enhance the West End garden area and at Messy Harvest on 29 September, we are aiming to plant as many Spring flowering bulbs as possible to add a splash of colour in the Spring. We are wanting particularly crocus and snowdrops and if you are able to donate any we would be most grateful. They can be given to Canon Mandy or left in the Cathedral Office. Thank you. CAPTURE A CHRISTIAN SUMMER Have you entered the photo competition to celebrate all Christian life, great and small, across our diocese? “Capture a Christian Summer” is the theme of the fun project, which aims to generate a fantastic gallery of people and places of worship. You can email your images to communications@leeds.anglican.org Please include your name and where the image was taken. The competition will close on September 1st. JANE TARVER is doing 10,000 steps every day in September in aid of Cancer Research UK. If you would like to sponsor her, please sign the form on the Sound Desk. Thank you. MICHELLE SIMPSON would like to thank everyone who sponsored her on her Coast to Coast cycle ride in aid of the Sue Ryder Manorlands and Wheatfields Hospices. The final amount raised, which will be divided between the two hospices, was £1680.50 of which £471.25 was from Cathedral people, and she would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their support, which was a huge encouragement to her.
