Hymn
Thanks be to God for his saints of each past generation, one with us still in one body, one great congregation; with them proclaim Jesus for ever the same, Author of life and salvation. Thanks be to God for his blessings which daily surround us; glory to Christ, the Redeemer who sought us and found us, who from the grave rose, the almighty to save, breaking the fetters that bound us. Thanks be to God for the years that are yet in his keeping, trusting each day to the care of a Father unsleeping, on to the end, Christ our companion and friend, joy at the last for our weeping. Thanks be to God who has called us and daily defends us, who with the Son and the Spirit unchanging befriends us; now in that name, Jesus for ever the same, forth to his service he sends us. Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.1926) Tune: Lobe Den Herren SP117 3
Greeting Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. Come, Holy Spirit Fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in us the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen We remain standing
Prayers of Penitence Jesus said to his apostles, ‘You are my friends if you obey my commands.’ Let us now confess our disobedience to him.
John 15:14
Silence Lord Jesus, in your love you invite us to be your friends: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, in your joy you choose us to go out and bear fruit: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, in your power you send us to be your faithful witnesses: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. God, the Father of mercies, has reconciled the world to himself through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ, not counting our sins against us, but sending his Holy Spirit to shed abroad his love among us. By the ministry of reconciliation entrusted by Christ to his Church, receive his pardon and peace to stand before him in his strength alone, this day and evermore. Amen.

The president introduces a period of silent prayer
Prayer for the day Almighty God, who inspired your apostle Saint Peter to confess Jesus as Christ and Son of the living God: build up your Church upon this rock, that in unity and peace it may proclaim one truth and follow one Lord, your Son our Saviour Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit
New Testament Reading
Acts 12.1-12 read by Stephen Gant
About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. 2He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. 3After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.)4When he had seized him, he put him in prison and handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. 5While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him. 6 The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison. 7Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, ‘Get up quickly.’ And the chains fell off his wrists. 8The angel said to him, ‘Fasten your belt and put on your sandals.’ He did so. Then he said to him, ‘Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.’ 9Peter went out and followed him; he did not realize that what was happening with the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10After they had passed the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. 11Then Peter came to himself and said, ‘Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.’ This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Hymn
Thou art the Christ, O Lord, the Son of God most high: for ever be adored that name in earth and sky, in which, though mortal strength may fail, the saints of God at last prevail. O surely he was blest with blessedness unpriced, who, taught of God, confessed the Godhead in the Christ; for of thy Church, Lord, thou didst own thy saint a true foundation-stone. Thrice fallen, thrice restored, the bitter lesson learnt, that heart for thee, O Lord, with triple ardour burnt. The cross he took he laid not down until he grasped the martyr’s crown. O bright triumphant faith, O courage void of fears, O love most strong in death, O penitential tears! By these, Lord, keep us lest we fall, and make us go where thou shalt call. Words: W Walsham How (1823-1897) Tune: Love Unknown CP236

Gospel Reading
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Choir
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come, the Almighty. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord
Matthew 16.13-19 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ 14And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ 15He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ 16Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ 17And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, please be seated

Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, slain for us - and we remember the promise made that all who come in faith find forgiveness at the cross. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of His sacrifice as a sign of our bonds of peace around the table of the King. The body of our Saviour Jesus Christ, torn for you - eat and remember the wounds that heal, the death that brings us life paid the price to make us one. The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, shed for you - drink and remember he drained death’s cup that all may enter in to receive the life of God. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond, - and to remember our call to follow in the steps of Christ as His body here on earth. As we share in His suffering we proclaim Christ will come again! And we’ll join in the feast of heaven around the table of the King Words and music by Keith and Kristyn Getty & Stuart Townend SP212
Prayer of Preparation Father, accept all we bring before you this day. Guide us with your love and feed us at your table as you nourish the faith of the Church by the preaching of your apostle Peter. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer Prayer A
It is indeed right and good that we should give you thanks, praise and glory, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. For after his resurrection he sent out his apostles and evangelists to preach the gospel to all nations and lead us in the way of truth. Himself the chief cornerstone, he founded his Church upon the apostles firmly to stand for ever as a sign of your holiness upon earth and a living witness to all of the way that leads to heaven. And so with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we lift our voices and join in their unending hymn of praise: Choir
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; 11
Who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power Be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence 12
The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. As the Lay ministers receive communion the choir sings . Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world; grant us Thy peace. Stewards will direct you to the Communion rail. Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you. 13
Communion Motet O sing joyfully unto God our strength: make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob. Take the song, bring hither the tabret: the merry harp with the lute. Blow up the trumpet in the new-moon: e’en in the time appointed, and upon our solemn feast day. For this was made a statute for Israel: and a law of the God of Jacob.

Hymn
We love the place, O God, wherein thine honour dwells; the joy of thine abode all earthly joys excels. We love the house of prayer, wherein thy servants meet; and thou, O Lord, art there thy chosen flock to greet. We love the sacred font; for there the holy Dove to pour is ever wont his blessing from above. We love thine altar, Lord; O what on earth so dear? for there, in faith adored, we find thy presence near. We love the word of life, the word that tells of peace, of comfort in the strife, and joys that never cease. We love to sing below for mercies freely given; but O we long to know the triumph-song of heaven.
14
Lord Jesus, give us grace on earth to love three more, in heaven to see thy face, and with thy saints adore. Words: William Bullock (1798-1874) and H W Baker (1821-1877) Tune: ‘Quam Dilecta’, H L Jenner (1820-1898) CP211
Prayers after Communion Lord God, the source of truth and love, keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, united in prayer and the breaking of bread, and one in joy and simplicity of heart, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. We stand
Hymn
Hope of our calling: hope by courage won; The apostles dared to share all Christ had done. Saints of today, Christ’s banner now unfurled, Will bring God’s message to tomorrow’s world. Hope of our calling: hope by faith empowered In those God sends to share his holy word, This call is ours, for we are chosen too, To live for God in all we say and do. 15
Hope of our calling: hope with grace infused. We share God’s love with all by hate confused; The call to serve, to wash each others’ feet, To bring Christ’s healing touch to all we meet. Hope of our calling: hope with strength made bold; We’ll sow God’s kingdom-seeds throughout the world; Bring peace from conflict, fruitfulness from weeds, We’ll grow in Christ, our harvest-yield increased. Hope of our calling: Spirit-filled, unbound, Old joys remembered and new purpose found, Our call refreshed by sacrament and word, We go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Text: Ally Barrett (b.1975) Tune: Woodlands SP157
Blessing God, who has prepared for you a city with eternal foundations, bring you, with Peter and all the saints, to the eternal and triumphant joy of that city; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Organ Voluntary Sinfonia from Cantata no 29 “Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir” J S Bach
