Welcome and Notices The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn Come down, O love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Words: Bianco da Siena (d.1434) tr R F Littledale (1833-1890) Tune: ‘Down Ampney’, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) CP 175

President, the Right Reverend Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds

Greeting God is spirit. Let us worship him in spirit and truth. The Lord is with us. Let us praise his name together.

Introduction Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our cruciďŹ ed, risen and ascended Lord and we have walked with him through his journey of love. We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross. We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death. We have enjoyed his risen presence with us and his revelation of himself through the breaking of bread. We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord. And now, with the followers of his own time, we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people, through whom we make Christ known to the world.

Responsory As we wait in silence, fill us with your Spirit. As we listen to your word, fill us with your Spirit. As we worship you in majesty, fill us with your Spirit. As we long for your refreshing, fill us with your Spirit. As we long for your renewing, fill us with your Spirit. As we long for your equipping, fill us with your Spirit. As we long for your empowering, fill us with your Spirit. Silence

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The president introduces a period of silent prayer

Prayer of the day Holy Spirit, sent by the Father, ignite in us your holy fire; strengthen your children with the gift of faith, revive your Church with the breath of love, and renew the face of the earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

New Testament Reading

Acts 2.1-21 read by Ian Price

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13 But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’ 5 6

14 But

Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Thou art the source of life, thou art our treasure-store; give us thy peace and end our strife for evermore. Gospel Reading

Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Choir

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord

John 14.8 - 17 8

Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ 9Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you 7

ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. 15

‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit

Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine Jesus calls us here to meet him as, through word and song and prayer, we affirm God’s promised presence where his people live and care. cf 2 Corinthians 1:22

Jesus calls us to confess him Word of life and Lord of all, sharer of our flesh and frailness, saving all who fail or fall. Tell his holy human story ; tell his tales that all may hear ; tell the world that Christ in glory came to earth to meet us here. Jesus calls us to each other, vastly different though we are ; creed and colour, class and gender neither limit nor debar. Join the hand of friend and stranger ; join the hands of age and youth ; join the faithful and the doubter in their common search for truth. Jesus calls us to his table rooted firm in time and space, where the Church in earth and heaven finds a common meeting place. Share the bread and wine, his body ; share the love of which we sing ; share the feast of saints and sinners hosted by our Lord and King. Words and Music: John L. Bell (b. 1949) and Graham Maule (b. 1958) SP 218

Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord is here. His Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. This day we give you thanks because in fulďŹ lment of your promise you pour out your Spirit upon us, ďŹ lling us with your gifts, leading us into all truth, and uniting peoples of many tongues 12

in the confession of one faith. Your Spirit gives us grace to call you Father, to proclaim your gospel to all nations and to serve you as a royal priesthood. Therefore we join our voices with angels and archangels, and with all those in whom the Spirit dwells, to proclaim the glory of your name, for ever praising you and singing: Choir

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, 13

and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power Be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

14

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. As the Lay ministers receive communion the choir sings. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. Stewards will direct you to the Communion rail. Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you. The anointing with oil of chrism at the rail is offered. If you wish to receive this ministry, please remain at the rail after you have received bread and wine, and a minister will mark you with the sign of the cross in oil and say, May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Communion Motet Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire; thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost thy seven-fold gifts impart. Thy blessèd unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love; Enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight. Anoint and cheer our soilèd face with the abundance of thy grace: keep far our foes, give peace at home; where thou art guide no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, of both, to be but one; that through the ages all along this may be our endless song, ‘Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.’ Thomas Attwood (?1765–1838) Latin paraphrased by John Cosin (1594–1672)

We remain seated

Hymn One bread, one body, one Lord of all, one cup of blessing which we bless. And we, though many, throughout the earth, we are one body in this one Lord. Gentile or Jew, servant or free, woman or man, no more. Many the gifts, many the works, one in the Lord of all. Grain for the fields, scattered and grown, gathered to one, for all. Words and Music: John Foley (b1939) SP221

Prayers after Communion Faithful God, who fulfilled the promises of Easter by sending us your Holy Spirit and opening to every race and nation the way of life eternal: open our lips by your Spirit, that every tongue may tell of your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord Amen. Generous God, you have fed us at your heavenly table. Set us on fire with your Spirit that when Christ comes again we may shine like lights before his face, who with you and the Spirit lives for ever. Amen.

We stand

Hymn Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost, taught by thee, we covet most of thy gifts at Pentecost, holy, heavenly love. Love is kind, and suffers long, love is meek, and thinks no wrong, love than death itself more strong; therefore give us love. Prophecy will fade away, melting in the light of day; love will ever with us stay; therefore give us love. Faith will vanish into sight; hope be emptied in delight; love in heaven will shine more bright; therefore give us love. Faith and hope and love we see joining hand in hand agree; but the greatest of the three, and the best, is love. From the overshadowing of thy gold and silver wing shed on us, who to thee sing, holy, heavenly love. Words: Christopher Wordsworth, based on 1 Corinthians 13 and Psalm 68.13 Tune: Charity CP182

Blessing May the Spirit, who set the Church on ďŹ re upon the day of Pentecost, bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ. and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
