Bradford Cathedral, Stott Hill, Bradford, BD1 4EH T: 01274 777720 F: 01274 777730 2

Welcome and Notices The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn Children’s Space move to their groups O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim; with gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness, kneel and adore him, the Lord is his name. Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness: high on his heart he will bear it for thee, comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine: truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to lay on his shrine. These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear; mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling and hope for our fear. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim; with gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness, kneel and adore him, the Lord is his name. Words: J S B Monsell Tune: Was Lebet CP89

Greeting The Lord is with us. Let us praise his name.

New Testament Reading

Galatians 3.23-end read by Susan Ibnouzaki

23

Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. 24Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand

Hymn Spirit of God, unseen as the wind, gentle as is the dove: teach us the truth and help us believe, show us the Saviour’s love! You spoke to us – long, long ago – gave us the written word; we read it still, needing its truth, through it God’s voice is heard. Without your help we fail our Lord, we cannot live his way; we need your power, we need your strength, following Christ each day.

Words: Margaret Old (1932-2001) Tune: Skye Boat Song SP188

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come, the Almighty. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 5

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord Luke 8.26-39 26

Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. 28When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, ‘What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me’— 29for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) 30Jesus then asked him, ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘Legion’; for many demons had entered him.31They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. 32 Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 34 When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. 35Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 36Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. 37Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39‘Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.’ So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit

Sermon The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Canon Precentor Silence

We stand

Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of Penitence We have too often exchanged the worship of the living God for idols of our own imagining. As we gather to offer our praises to the holy and undivided Trinity, and to worship God in spirit and in truth, let us call to mind our sins. Silence We have not always worshipped God, our creator. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. We have not always followed Christ, our Saviour. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy We have not always trusted in the Spirit, our guide. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy God, the Father of mercies, has reconciled the world to himself through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ, not counting our trespasses against us, but sending his Holy Spirit to shed abroad his love among us. By the ministry of reconciliation entrusted by Christ to his Church, receive his pardon and peace to stand before him in his strength alone, this day and evermore. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession Led by Alan Briggs In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or an alternative, response is used: Lord in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Introduction and welcome to Andy McCarthy Giving and Receiving Peace Peace to you from God our heavenly Father. Peace from his Son Jesus Christ who is our peace. Peace from the Holy Spirit, the life-giver. The peace of the triune God be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace

Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine Come, Holy Spirit, come! Inflame our souls with love, transforming every heart and home with wisdom from above. O let us not despise the humble path Christ trod, but choose, to shame the worldly-wise, the foolishness of God. Come with the gift to heal the wounds of guilt and fear, and to oppression’s face reveal the kingdom drawing near. Where chaos longs to reign, descend, O holy Dove, and free us all to work again the miracles of love. Spirit of truth, arise; inspire the prophet’s voice: expose to scorn the tyrant’s lies, and bid the poor rejoice. O Spirit, clear our sight, all prejudice remove, and help us to discern the right, and covet only love.

9

Give us the tongues to speak, in every time and place, to rich and poor, to strong and weak, the word of love and grace. Enable us to hear the words that others bring, interpreting with open ear the special song they sing. Come, Holy Spirit, dance within our hearts today, our earthbound spirits to entrance, our mortal fears allay. And teach us to desire, all others things above, that self-consuming holy fire, the perfect gift of love! Words: Michael Forster, based on 1 Corinthians 12 Tune: Diademata CP179

Prayer of Preparation Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, give us the bread of everlasting life, and make us branches of the true vine. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord. 10

All that you reveal of your glory, the same we believe of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, without any difference or inequality. We, your holy Church, acclaim you, Father of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. Three Persons we adore, one in being and equal in majesty. And so with angels and archangels, with cherubim and seraphim, we sing for ever of your glory: Choir

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; 11

we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power Be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 12

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. As the Lay ministers receive communion the choir sings. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. Stewards will direct you to the Communion rail. Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you.

Communion Motet Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exsultemus et in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Amen. Wherever charity and love are to be found, God is there. The love of Christ has brought us together as one. Let us rejoice and be glad in him. Let us fear and love the living God; and let us love one another with sincerity in our heart. Amen. Maurice Duruflé (1902–86) Antiphon at the foot-washing, Maundy Thursday

We stand

Hymn The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above; Ancient of everlasting days, and God of love; Jehovah, great I AM, by earth and heaven confessed: we bow and bless the sacred Name for ever blest. Though nature's strength decay, and earth and hell withstand to Canaan's bounds we urge our way at his command: the watery deep we pass, with Jesus in our view; and through the howling wilderness our way persue. The goodly land we see, with peace and plenty blest: a land of sacred liberty and endless rest; there milk and honey flow, and oil and wine abound, and trees of life for ever grow, with mercy crowned. There dwells the Lord, our King, the Lord, our Righteousness, triumphant o'er the world of sin, the Prince of Peace; on Sion's sacred height his kingdom he maintains, and, glorious with his saints in light, for ever reigns. Before the saviour’s face the ransomed nations bow, o’erwhelmed at his almighty grace for ever new; he shows his prints of love they kindle to a flame, and sound through all the worlds above the slaughtered Lamb. The whole triumphant host give thanks to God on high; "Hail, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost" they ever cry; hail, Abraham's God and mine; (I join the heavenly lays); all might and majesty are thine, and endless praise! Words: Thomas Olivers (1725-1799) Tune: Leoni CP586

Blessing God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. 15
