Hymn For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies,
Lord of all, to thee we raise this our sacrifice of praise. For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light: For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends above, pleasures pure and undefiled: For each perfect gift of thine, to our race so freely given, graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven: For thy church which evermore lifteth holy hands above, offering up on every shore her pure sacrifice of love: Words: F S Pierpoint Tune: Englands Lane CP253(i)
Greeting Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing
Prayers of Penitence Our Lord Jesus Christ said, the first commandment is this: 'Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Amen. Lord, have mercy. My brothers and sisters, as we prepare to celebrate the presence of Christ in word and sacrament, let us call to mind and confess our sins. Silence Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

New Testament Reading
Hebrews 11.1-3,8-16 read by Jane Thompson
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. 3By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. 9By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old—and Sarah herself was barren—because he considered him faithful who had promised. 12Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, ‘as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.’ 5
13
All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, 14for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. 16But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand
Hymn Thanks to God whose word was spoken in the deed that made the earth. His the voice that called a nation, his the fires that tried her worth. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise him for his open word. Thanks to God whose Word Incarnate glorified the flesh of man; deeds and words and death and rising tell the grace in heaven’s plan. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise him for his open word. Thanks to God whose word was written in the Bible’s sacred page, record of the revelation showing God to every age. God has spoken: praise him for his open word. Thanks to God whose word is published in the tongues of every race. See its glory undiminished by the change of time or place. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise him for his open word.
6
Thanks to God whose word is answered by the Spirit’s voice within. Here we drink of joy unmeasured, life redeemed from death and sin. God has spoken, God has spoken: praise him for his open word. Words: R.T. Brooks 1918-1985 Tune: St Helen CP 584
Gospel Reading
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord Luke 12.32-40 32
‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 35 ‘Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks.37Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 38If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. 39 ‘But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, please be seated

Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Giving and Receiving Peace We are all one in Christ Jesus, We belong to him through faith, heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace
Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest, beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice opprest. I know not, O I know not what joys await us there, what radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare. They stand, those halls of Sion, conjubilant with song, and bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng; the Prince is ever with them, the daylight is serene, the pastures of the blessèd are decked in glorious sheen. 9
There is the throne of David, and there, from care released, the shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast; and they, who with their leader have conquered in the fight, for ever and for ever are clad in robes of white. O sweet and blessèd country, the home of God’s elect! O sweet and blessèd country, that eager hearts expect! Jesu, in mercy, bring us to that dear land of rest; who art, with God the Father and Spirit, ever blest. Words: Bernard of Cluny, tr J M Neale Tune: Ewing CP482
Prayer of Preparation Pour upon the poverty of our love, And the weakness of our praise, The transforming fire of your presence. Amen.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer Prayer B
Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour. By the power of the holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed virgin, he lived on earth and went among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; 10
and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Choir
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people 11
and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence
The Lord’s Prayer Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

As the Lay ministers receive communion the choir sings. Jesus Lamb of God have mercy on us. Jesus bearer of our sins have mercy on us. Jesus redeemer of the world grant us peace. Stewards will direct you to the Communion rail. Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you.
Communion Motet Ave verum Corpus natum ex Maria Virgine vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine. Cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine. Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. O clemens, O pie, O dulcis Jesu fili Mariae. Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who truly suffered upon the cross for humankind: from whose pierced side there came forth water and blood; give us now, and at the time of our death, yourself to be our food. O gentle, holy Jesus, Son of Mary.
Words: 14th century Music: Edward Elgar (1857–1934)

Hymn We come to this your table, Lord, on burdens of our sin; and as we kneel we see again our free Salvation bought with pain and our new birth begin. We come to this your table, Lord, unworthy of your care; yes love unbounded floods our souls, confirms our faith, defines our goals, and speaks of joys to share. We come to this your table, Lord, to take the bread and wine; we go away with thankful hearts for all the joy this feast imparts, for this most precious sign.
13
And far from this your table, Lord, when anxious cares invade, help us remember this dear place, you're mighty power, your saving grace, your table richly laid. Words: Paul Wigmore (b1925) CP330 Tune: Repton CP411
Prayers after Communion Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands that have taken holy things; may the ears which have heard your word be deaf to clamour and dispute; may the tongues which have sung your praise be free from deceit; may the eyes which have seen the tokens of your love shine with the light of hope; and may the bodies which have been fed with your body be refreshed with the fullness of your life; glory to you for ever. Amen. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. We stand
Hymn There’s a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness of the sea; there’s a kindness in his justice which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth’s sorrows are more felt than up in heaven; there is no place where earth’s failings have such kindly judgement given. For the love of God is broader than the measures of man’s mind; and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. But we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own; and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he will not own. 14
There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head. There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great at this; there is room for fresh creations in that upper home of bliss. If our love were but more simple, we should take him at his word; and our lives would be all gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord. Words: F W Faber Tune: Corvedale CP598
Blessing The God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Organ Voluntary The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship. Please remain for refreshments served at the back of the Cathedral.
