Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds
Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. ❖ A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. ❖ Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. ❖ Children’s Space takes place in the Parish Room. Please take your child to the Children’s area, by the North door, during the first hymn. They return and sit together during the administration of Communion. ❖ The Cathedral Choir sing worship today. The Choral setting is the Communion Service in E (Collegium Regale) by the English composer Harold Darke (1888-1976). ❖ If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. ❖ We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer, nonalcoholic wine or to have communion brought to you in your seat; please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. If you would prefer to receive a blessing rather than bread and wine, please bring this service booklet with you to the sanctuary rail. ❖ If you use a hearing aid, please turn the setting to ‘T’ in order to take advantage of the induction loop in the Cathedral. ❖ Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. ❖ Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. ❖ In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Bradford Cathedral, Stott Hill, Bradford, BD1 4EH T: 01274 777720 F: 01274 777730 2
Welcome and Notices The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Canon Precentor We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn Children’s Space move to their groups Father, Lord of all creation, ground of being, life and love; height and depth beyond description only life in you can prove: you are mortal life’s dependence: thought, speech, sight are ours by grace; yours is every hour’s existence, sovereign Lord of time and space. Jesus Christ, the Man for others, we, your people, make our prayer: help us love – as sisters, brothers – all whose burdens we can share. Where your name binds us together you, Lord Christ, will surely be; where no selfishness can sever there your love the world may see. Holy Spirit, rushing, burning wind and flame of Pentecost, fire our hearts afresh with yearning to regain what we have lost. May your love unite our action, never more to speak alone: God, in us abolish faction, God, through us your love make known. Words: Stewart Cross Tune: Abbot’s Leigh CP418
Greeting The Lord is with us. Let us praise his name together.

Spoken praise Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength; ascribe to the Lord the honour due to his name. The whole earth is full of his glory. The Lord shall give strength to his people; the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. We remain standing as the choir sings
Gloria in Excelsis Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The president introduces a period of silent prayer
Prayer of the day Holy God, faithful and unchanging: enlarge our minds with the knowledge of your truth, and draw us more deeply into the mystery of your love, that we may truly worship you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

New Testament Reading
Romans 5.1-5 read by Alex Berry
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand
Hymn Father of heaven, whose love profound a ransom for our souls hath found, before thy throne we sinners bend; to us thy pardoning love extend. Almighty Son, Incarnate Word, our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord, before thy throne we sinners bend; to us thy saving grace extend. Eternal Spirit, by whose breath the soul is raised from sin and death, Before thy throne we sinners bend; to us thy quickening power extend. Jehovah - Father, Spirit, Son mysterious Godhead, Three in One, before thy throne we sinners bend; grace, pardon, life to us extend. Words: Edward Cooper, 1770-1833 Music: Rivaulx, Song 5, St. Cross, Das Leiden des Herrn CP 421

Gospel Reading The Lord be with you and also with you.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Choir
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come, the Almighty. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord
John 16.12-15 12
‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit
Sermon The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Pastoral and Mission development Silence We stand
Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, 6
of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. We sit
Prayers of Penitence We have too often exchanged the worship of the living God for idols of our own imagining. As we gather to offer our praises to the holy and undivided Trinity, and to worship God in spirit and in truth, let us call to mind our sins. Silence We have not always worshipped God, our creator. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. We have not always followed Christ, our Saviour. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy 7
We have not always trusted in the Spirit, our guide. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy God, the Father of mercies, has reconciled the world to himself through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ, not counting our trespasses against us, but sending his Holy Spirit to shed abroad his love among us. By the ministry of reconciliation entrusted by Christ to his Church, receive his pardon and peace to stand before him in his strength alone, this day and evermore. Amen.
Prayers of Intercession Led by Fiona Beevers In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or an alternative, response is used: Lord in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Giving and Receiving Peace Peace to you from God our heavenly Father. Peace from his Son Jesus Christ who is our peace. Peace from the Holy Spirit, the life-giver. The peace of the triune God be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace

Words: James Quinn (1919-2010) Tune: Stuttgart SP103
It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord. All that you reveal of your glory, the same we believe of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, without any difference or inequality. We, your holy Church, acclaim you, Father of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. Three Persons we adore, one in being and equal in majesty. And so with angels and archangels, with cherubim and seraphim, we sing for ever of your glory: Choir
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, 10
and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power Be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence
The Lord’s Prayer Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 11
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. As the Lay ministers receive communion the choir sings. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. Stewards will direct you to the Communion points. Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you.
You are welcome to receive prayer for yourself, or others, in one of the chapels having received communion.
Communion Motet Blessed angel spirits offer praise undying, ever crying Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth. Saints and martyrs praise thy name, trinity life giving, earth-borne sorrow leaving before thy throne, ever crying Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth. Father omnipotent, mighty in glory, Christ thy Son, our Saviour who died that we might live, Holy Spirit, mystic dove, dwelling with us evermore, we praise thee, we praise thee, blessed trinity. With the angels’ sacred hymn, all thy might proclaiming, with the mystic cherubim in songs of praise we join, Holy, Holy, Holy, join we all in songs of praise, in songs of praise for ever; Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, Lord God of Sabaoth.
