Finding ‘The One’
Aside from family and Drambuie, there are two things my granny loves above all else: scouring Look’s pages for photographs of me (as all grannies would their granddaughters) and buying coats. Granted she lives in North East Scotland, where weighty cover-ups aren’t only recommended, they’re compulsory. Still, on last count, she had 23 of them stashed in her wardrobe, which certainly teeters into obsessive territory. So, when I came into work last week wearing yet another new coat – to the bewilderment of my colleagues – I found comfort in the fact that I know I can’t help my need to 1) keep warm, and 2) look good. It’s clearly Coat, £90, hereditary and a product of the harsh Scottish ASOS climate I grew up in. However, as the nation descends into chillier temperatures by the day, it’s essential that you, too, arm yourself against The Big Freeze. This is why we’ve dedicated this issue to helping you find The One: the coat (or two, or five) that’ll make you want to leave the warmth of your duvet and wish away the last days of autumn. On p58, I personally guarantee you’ll find a cover-up to suit your schedule and your style. From padded puffas and aviator bikers to vinyl finishes and classic trench coats, no coat is exempt from our ultimate edit, which includes a host of affordable offerings as standard. Handy if you’re anything like my granny and me, as you’ll likely want one of each…

FROM PA R I S S a i n t L a u r e n t’s Paris may be Fashion Month’s Eif fe l Extravaga nza swansong, but we Just when we thought Saint Laurent couldn’t get any more extra than those diamanté encrusted knee-highs are anything but AW17, along came SS18 with said boots being sad, mainly because from reworked in all-over feathers. With the Eiffel Tower so many of the as a totally caj, glistening back drop, creative director Anthony Vaccarello delved deep in to the then YSL standout show to bring back iconic shapes, like the cocoon looks are shoppable archives dress and suitably sparkly couture jacket. Thanks to Valentino, Acne and Céline and basically every other designer at PFW, it’s now totally acceptable to wear sparkles all year-round, and there’s a bounty of bling to be had on the high street. Go for white, silver and subtle pink to nail the snow queen vibe seen at all the top shows.

Kickass Khaki Vs Blushing Pink When you spot FROW-goers and catwalk models channelling the same look, it’s time to take note. Sure, red may be the colour du jour, but when it comes to SS18, khaki and pink are where it’s at. Go top-to-toe, like they did on the runway, or mix them up for the perfect tonal pairing. Believe us, it works.

WAIT, WTF? These totally LOL looks will make you do a double take. From Maison Margiela’s airport-ready outfits complete with neck pillow and eye mask (yup), to Comme Des Garçons’ toy covered ’dos. But, nothing beats the return of muchmaligned Crocs to the catwalk: they’ve reached new heights with mega platforms at Balenciaga. Bypass the weird glares and consider these the faux pas to avoid for SS18 and, well, forever.
D o n’ t G o C h a s i n g Wa t e r f a l l s We can always count on Karl Lagerfeld to put on one hell of a show for Chanel and SS18 was no exception. With Gorges Du verdon as his muse, Karl decided to drop a canyon in the middle of the Grand Palais, complete with cascading waterfalls. So what do models wear for said damp occasion? Jackets and knee-high boots went plastic, accessories were pearlescent and the fashion house’s signature bouclé tweed was paired with sensible waterproofs. Basically, think Blair Waldorf in a downpour. We know what you’re thinking, why the canyon? to which Karl would respond: ‘Why not?’ 4

A N N A RIH r e H s n a Pl e v o M t x Ne They’re yet to announce that they’re officially together, but behind closed doors, Rihanna and her man are plotting…
Beyoncé and Jay Z want to keep their power-couple crown
There is a sense of r ivalry from Beyoncé and Jay Z
that he knows quite a bit about business. RiRi, on the other hand, is a mega-superstar singer, who’s recently trademarked her surname, Fenty, for her new beauty range and her spirits and wine collection, not to mention her collaboration with Puma. Her net worth is also pretty impressive, at a massive £176million. Put the two together? Hello, hot new power couple. ‘They were initially discussing Hassan investing in some of Rihanna’s products or ventures,’ our insider continues. ‘Rihanna’s on fire right now, and he’s telling her that everything she touches turns to gold. He’s suggested they work together in building an empire, possibly even hotels.’ But one couple who aren’t so happy about it are Beyoncé, 36, and Jay Z, 47 – who are worth over £765million combined. ‘There’s

definitely a sense of rivalry from Beyoncé and Jay Z,’ our source adds. ‘Jay Z was Rihanna’s mentor, and now he’s worried she’s going to surpass him. It’s unlikely that Beyoncé would ever have become so successful if they weren’t together, and they know their brand is all about the fact that they’re a power couple. ‘Rihanna has never had someone she could seriously build that relationship with, and Beyoncé is feeling a bit worried. TIDAL [Beyoncé and Jay Z’s music streaming service] is still developing, and now she can see RiRi pushing on. ‘Rihanna thinks there’s room for all of them, and she loves the idea of becoming a power couple with Hassan. With her creativity and his business skills, she thinks they make the perfect match.’ Some friends of hers are worried, though, telling us: ‘She’s worked so hard for everything, and there’s a fear that going into business with someone could be a bad move – it could ruin their relationship and her whole career.’ But we’re just happy that the 29-year-old singer’s found a guy she’s happy with. Another friend agrees, saying: ‘In the past, Rihanna’s found it hard to have a successful professional and personal life, but everything is finally falling into place. She’s in her element and she has never been happier.’ Given RiRi’s dating track record of bad-boy ex-boyfriends, we couldn’t be happier for her.

he’s been keeping tight-lipped about her hot new fella, but that doesn’t mean Rihanna isn’t conjuring up some big plans with her beau. In fact, the superstar and her mega-rich boyfriend are planning on taking over Hollywood as the next ultimate power couple. RiRi is currently dating Saudi billionaire Hassan Jameel, who she was spotted with for the first time in June, when the pair were holidaying together in Ibiza. Since then, they’ve been seen out on a few hot dates in London and close friends have said the duo are smitten. So much so, they’re even planning to go into business together. ‘Rihanna is completely besotted with Hassan,’ a close pal tells us. ‘And because Hassan is obviously a very astute businessman, it’s only natural that he talks to Rihanna about how she could use a little capital. The idea of launching a joint venture definitely appeals to her now that their relationship is getting more serious, and they’ve been talking about how they can combine their passions.’ Hassan, 29, is one of the world’s richest men, with a net worth of £1.1billion. He’s the deputy president and vice chairman of the family business – Abdul Latif Jameel – which owns a Toyota distributorship in Saudi Arabia. It’ll come as no surprise, then,

Harry charms Doria at the Invictus Games
ith their engagement announcement surely just around the corner (we’re crossing our fingers!), it looks like Prince Harry has been working his royal charm to get the seal of approval from the most important person in Meghan Markle’s life – her mum. Harry, 33, flew Doria Ragland from LA to the Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada, last month, so she could enjoy the VIP treatment with her daughter, then wooed her with his hilarious bants at the closing ceremony. ‘Doria’s incredibly protective of her daughter. She doesn’t want any time wasters and needed to be sure that Harry was serious about Meghan,’ a source close to the couple explains. ‘But Harry has been the perfect gentleman and his natural, funny and friendly self. He was really keen to make Doria feel welcome at the Invictus Games. He rolled out the red carpet, and Doria appreciated how he went the extra mile. She values kindness and quality of spirit above all else, and Harry has plenty of both.’ We bet Harry was super-nervous about impressing his future mother-in-law. Doria, 61, is an extraordinary lady. Not only is she a social worker, she’s also a yoga instructor,
and for Meghan, 36, she’s the most important person in the world. ‘My mum has always been a free spirit,’ Meghan said earlier this year. ‘She has dreadlocks and a nose ring. She just ran the LA Marathon. We can just have so much fun together, and yet I’ll still find so much solace in her support. That duality co-exists the way it would in a best friend.’ Meghan and her mum have always been close. After her dad Thomas split from Doria when Meghan was six, she brought her up as a single mum and often took Meghan on humanitarian trips abroad, so she could understand the hardship others face. We reckon Harry’s charity work put a big tick next to his name for Doria. Meghan’s also revealed that her mum nicknames her ‘flower’, and that she even had a personalised number plate on her car that read MEGNME. No wonder Harry went all out to impress her! ‘Doria has the power to say yes or no to their engagement,’ our source continues. ‘So, it’s a good job that “Operation Mother-inlaw”, as Harry jokingly called it, was a success. He’s also charmed his future father-in-law, too – Thomas has been blown away by how normal the prince is. But, at the end of the day, it’s Doria’s opinion that matters most of all, so it’s a good job she loves Harry and can’t wait for the wedding.’ We can’t wait, too!

‘ I Wa n t Yo u ’ ! e r o M d n u o r A he’s been keeping herself hidden away looking after their super-adorable son Bear, but it seems Cheryl could be ready to bring back her A-game! The former Girls Aloud star has told friends she wants her man Liam Payne to be at home more so that she can up her career goals and propel herself back into the limelight. Chezza, who gave birth to Bear in March, waltzed back on to the scene last week for Paris Fashion Week, and it’s also rumoured she’ll be coming back to our screens next weekend for Judges’ Houses on The X Factor. All of which has only spurred her on to come back even bigger and better than before. ‘Cheryl has taken a big personal decision to get back in the game and really start becoming more

of a public figure again – and that means big changes for her relationship with Liam,’ a source close to the star tells us. ‘She wants to really change the whole dynamic in the relationship to make it more of an equal split between her and Liam when it comes to spending time at home parenting. ‘She’s held back so he can make it solo and she’s super-proud – but now it’s her turn.’ Cheryl, 34, and One Direction star Liam, 24, met way back when Liam was just a young lad auditioning for The X Factor. But since 2016, these two have been dating and, if recent snaps of Cheryl’s ring finger are anything to go by, are possibly already engaged, too. And now Cheryl’s a mum and has a happy life at home, she’s ready to get her career back on track. ‘She’s seeing that the public still have a real love for her and it’s given her the initiative to get back out there in the spotlight,’ our source continues. ‘For a while after the baby was born she was really struggling to get her mojo back. But now she is rediscovering her self-confidence and her desire to do more in the public eye again.’ So what does this mean for Liam, who’s been travelling the world over the last six months, lookmag

promoting himself as a solo artist? ‘Cheryl wants Liam to play his part and support her career,’ says our source. ‘She wants Liam to choose home life more and be around so she can focus on her work. She feels as if she’s been the one to step back and allow his career to flourish, while she looks after things at home. And now it’s time for him to step up.’ Sounds to us as if you’d better start clearing that diary, Liam! lookmagazine

We’re talking about the white ones with the red and blue ticks that literally everyone (Look Influencer Monikh Dale included) has been wearing, and they’re becoming more iconic by the second. We’ve put their popularity down to a few things: 1) They’re the retro plimsoll type that work just as well with ladylike frocks as they do tracksuit trousers and a hoodie. 2) They’re only £44. Nope, we couldn’t believe it either. And 3) Orlando Bloom has a pair. See? You want some now, don’t you? The Liner: reach for wunder super-stay liner, £12.95.

Cleopatra liner is back and in an easierto-wear modern form. Backstage at Marc Jacobs, Mua diane Kendal made sure each flick worked with the shape of the model’s eyes – round eyes had thick liner underneath the lower lash line, while those with small eyelids had wings that were thinner. the trick for making sure your flick is on fleek? tailor it to your eye shape. b u r C S up Exfoliation seems tedious, but once it’s done you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner! But with so many different formulas out there, how do you know which one is right for you?
Grain Exfoliator
Not to be confused with classic toner, Superdrug Naturally Radiant Glycolic Tonic, £5.99, is an exfoliating liquid. Containing alpha-hydroxy acids, it’s ideal for over-25s who want to brighten their complexions. soak on to a cotton pad and sweep across the face to slough away dead cells and fix uneven tone. skin is left so soft and reacts better to serums and masks.

@lookmagazine
St. Ives Nourish & Smooth Oatmeal Scrub & Mask, £5.65, is a high street hero that holds its own compared to the more expensive luxe scrubs. oatmeal and walnut shell powder do a stellar job at removing visible flaky patches that can really dull dry skin. Be warned, harsh scrubbing can cause damage to your skin, though, so go easy and keep motions gentle!

Enzyme Exfoliator
enzyme exfoliators break down the ‘glue’ that holds dead, dulling skin cells together. More tender than harsher chemical exfoliants, they’re ideal for those of you with sensitive skin. Kiehl’s Pineapple Papaya Facial Scrub, £24 , may be a little on the pricey side, but well worth it for the sake of not having to deal with red blotchy skin post-scrub.

aroon, burgundy, Bordeaux – whatever you choose to call it, this is the latest shade to be seen in, thanks in no small part to Meghan Markle’s affinity for the hue, and who better to inspire our autumnal wardrobes than the most talked about woman on the planet RN? Naturally, her Aritzia dress sold out at lightning speed and, unsurprisingly, led to a spike in Google searches to shop the colour. If you’re already wearing it, bravo: simply add a few extra separates and rock it top-to-toe for maximum Meghan-inspired impact. We’ll be slipping into anything of the vinyl variety and styling Mango’s achingly cool mini-skirt iteration with a crew neck knit and matching sock boots. For something more caj, a corduroy trouser under a high-shine trench coat is just the ticket. There really are no rules here, as it goes with just about any other tone you throw at it – navy, grey, rust and co. Soz, black, but we’re maroon converts now.

BRIE LARSON INTERVIEW
‘Hanging Out With J-Law Is The Best’ The actress opens up about life as an Oscar winner, being a superhero and going bare-faced

ome people might take a rest after winning an Oscar, but not Brie Larson. Winning the award for Best Actress in 2015 for her role in Room made Brie a household name, and the 28 year old is now seriously lapping up the leading actress roles – it’s recently been revealed she’ll star as superhero Captain Marvel (the first Marvel franchise headed by a woman) in the 2019 movie. In the meantime, Brie is starring in highly anticipated drama The Glass Castle (out now), in which she plays real-life author Jeannette Walls. The film is adapted from Walls’ acclaimed 2005 memoir, and explores her poverty-stricken upbringing by deeply dysfunctional parents (played by Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson). Brie is frank, independent and we’re obsessed with her chic style. Here, she talks to us about her career, the Oscars, and why being BFFs with J-Law is the absolute best…
Hi Brie, you’ve recently been filming all over the world – what’s that been like? I’m grateful, and I love the fact I’ve worked in so many places. I’m constantly moving around, so that’s why certain moments, like a banquet or a gala or an awards ceremony, when you see someone again, it’s an amazing chance. It’s like a reunion, because you run into so many people. Didn’t you bump into a friendly face recently? When I was shooting in Montreal, Jen Lawrence was shooting at the same time and it was incredible that we got to spend weekends together. We were like: ‘How could we be so lucky?’ You get so used to being on your own, and exploring a new place and meeting new people all the time, so it’s such a treat when there’s a friend there. You’re soon going to be the star of your own standalone superhero franchise in Captain Marvel. Is it important to be part of a major studio film like that? It’s important that women are presented in a more positive and serious way than is often the case. Society has changed dramatically, and women are finding their way into all levels of the business world and becoming leaders in so many
fields. Movies need to reflect that, and the particular set of skills that we have that define us and also set us apart from men. Playing Captain Marvel gives me a chance to portray a dynamic and powerful woman who will inspire people, and women in particular, the way so many similar kinds of male superheroes have done in the past. I’m looking forward to exploring that. Since winning your Oscar, has the attention been overwhelming? I’m a pretty private person, so much of my day-to-day life is the same. This job can be really draining on one side, because it’s a lot of giving. You’re giving emotionally when you’re playing a character, you’re giving emotionally when you’re doing interviews, or when you’re meeting with fans. It’s an act of service. You have to find a way to balance it up with things that are for yourself. I feel like I’m still learning about that balance, because the output is more than it was. But my overall life is the same. It must be nice to not have to worry about the bills… It makes your life much easier on a practical level. Not that I’ve changed my spending habits dramatically or live very differently now from the way I have before, but at least I don’t have to worry about money and constantly being broke any more. It’s not pleasant having to live under that pressure when
With boyfriend Alex (below) and her Oscar (right)
I love r a w, naked b e a u t y, so I try not to wear too much make-up
you’re trying to find good roles and wanting to prove yourself. I still worry about the work I’m doing and whether I’m living up to my own ambitions. I don’t think that will ever change. Has your style changed much? I like being very natural. Like, I try not to wear too much make-up, because when I look at myself in the mirror sometimes I don’t recognise myself. I love raw, naked beauty, and we should try to spend more time not trying to put on these perfect façades that women often feel compelled to maintain. How do feel about your life these days? I feel very lucky to have some wonderful friends and a good partner [musician Alex Greenwald]. And I love my dogs!

t’s the taboo subject that affects at least 25% of us at the moment, and yet we’re still not doing enough about it. In fact, by 2030, it’s estimated that there will be around two million more adults in the UK with mental health problems than there were four years ago. Tuesday 10 October is World Mental Health Day, so we wanted to use it to open up the conversation. Rae Earl is the mastermind behind book and TV show My Mad Fat Diary, and she understands the mental health battle. a child, Rae, now 45, has struggled with mental health issues her entire life. Now, she’s released a new book, It’s All In Your Head, sharing invaluable advice and how she coped and (still) navigates through life’s trickier moments. Witty, light and in no way patronising, it’s everything you want it to be. An estimated one in six of us struggle with a common mental health problem each week, and when we sit down with Rae, she reminds us of three crucial points: we’re not alone, the term ‘snowflake’ is irritating, and Mary Berry is a hero (even if baking isn’t your happy place)… ‘We’re all a mess,’ says Rae. ‘I’ve had many years of living with a mixed-up mind and, just like everyone else, I’ve had some pretty challenging times. I came to realise that looking after your mental

health is the same as looking after your physical health – it doesn’t end when you turn 30, or when you’re officially an “adult”. Mental health is ongoing. We don’t reach a certain age and have it all sorted. ‘After My Mad Fat Diary was released, I had lots of people getting in touch for advice, but it wasn’t something I could give on social media. There isn’t a onesize-fits-all – I wanted to write a general go-to, the book I wished I’d had when I was growing up. I wanted to write the things that had helped me, in the hope they could help even just one other person. So that’s what I did. Now, here I am. But there’s much more to be done. ‘I often compare mental health to appendicitis. If you went into hospital today, you’d expect doctors to take out your appendix, get it sorted. But why is someone’s actual brain – the thing in lookmagazine

inding a new foundation can be tricky. Sure, it might look good in the shop – but how do you know if it will wear well? Will the colour change over time? And how will it stand up against that dreaded 3pm oil-slick shine? Well, with a whole range of new foundations launching this A/W promising longer-wearing coverage than ever, we roped in Look’s most beauty-obsessed staff to put them through their bases paces for a whole weekend. Here’s how they faired…

I prefer a more natural finish
Lydia Thompson, Look’s Beauty Editor: Age: 33. Skin tone: Medium. Skin type: Normal/oily. Skin concern: Ageing. ‘I worry that heavy foundations can age me by highlighting any fine lines on my face.’ Foundation to test: Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Everyday Perfection Bouncy Makeup in Golden Honey, £28.
Saturday
Friday
‘I don’t wear make-up during work, but at 6pm I hit the gym. I have dinner plans, so once my skin cools down, I buff the powder formula on with a brush and it immediately covers any redness. It’s still seamless at 11pm – no touch-ups.’
‘I’m running late to meet friends in town, so I apply my base on the bus. I don’t usually wear a heavy foundation in the day as I prefer a more natural finish, but this one is buildable. After shopping, I’m impressed that my complexion looks the same as it did at 9am.’
Sunday
‘Going for a family lunch means my no make-up Sunday is out of the window. I decide to use the sponge that’s included in the compact. This adds slightly more coverage than I’m used to, but the result? My tired face is gone! I like it.’
Verdict: ‘An easy-to-use, on-the-go, buildable foundation that stays put. But the compact wears out quickly and you need to wash the sponge regularly to avoid skin breakouts.’
BEAUTY
I go all in with the contour – full-on Kim K
Chloe Burcham, Look’s Deputy Beauty Editor: Age: 26. Skin tone: Fair/golden. Skin type: Dehydrated. Skin concern: Dark circles and uneven pigmentation. Foundation to test: Smashbox Studio Skin Shaping Foundation Stick in 2.1, £29.50.
Friday
‘A two-in-one product is not my usual go-to, but I’m game. I apply the foundation in a hurry, using a flat foundation brush to blend, as I rush out the door. By lunch, my oily T-Zone usually reveals itself, but right now my base is fine, albeit dewier. I can work with this and head out to dinner, no effort required.’
Saturday
‘I’m out again, so I go all in with the foundation and the contour wand – full-on Kim K, shading around my forehead, cheekbones and nose using a beauty blender. It looks natural, but I need a touch-up under my eyes after some heavy dancing.’
Sunday
‘Hello, virtuous Sunday! As a test, I apply pre-spin class, but post-gym I realise it’s not a goer. It melts off. Surprised? Not really. I re-apply with my fingers before brunch, and at 9pm I’m still sporting a sheer coverage look, which I think is pretty good going.’
Verdict: ‘A hydrating and dewy foundation that goes the distance and manages to make contouring super-simple. Perfect for on-the-go!’

Gabrielle Dyer, Look’s Beauty Writer: Age: 24. Skin tone: Olive. Skin type: Normal/ combination. Skin concern: Dullness. ‘I don’t like matte finish foundations – glossy, glowing skin is the look I’m after.’ Foundation to test: Max Factor Healthy Skin Harmony Miracle Foundation in Soft Honey, £14.99.
Saturday Friday
‘I’m going on a date so I switch this into my (fullface) routine. I have to buff it in more than usual because it’s thicker, but the finish is flawless. I check my face mid-dinner and I don’t even need to add concealer.’
‘I’m meeting with mates today, so I apply the foundation with a brush, and I’m unsure of this coverage for daytime but it feels light. My sister tells me I look really healthy, and for her to compliment me says a lot.’
Sunday
‘Today is a chilled one, however, I notice my face is looking quite dry from a few Proseccos yesterday. While it still needs a lot of blending, this foundation really does lift my complexion. And although I’m feeling tired, I can’t deny that my face looks great.’
Verdict: ‘If you want a dewy finish, a formula that hydrates your skin while you’re wearing it, this is the one for you.’
Saturday
Victoria Adegboyega, Look’s Picture Editor:
‘After a weights session at the gym, I quickly apply it using my fingers. Usually foundation sweats off, but I don’t have to touch-up once. Not even four hours later. This foundation does not budge.’
Age: 32. Skin tone: Dark. Skin type: Oily. Skin concern: Uneven skin tone/adult acne. Foundation to test: bareMinerals BAREPRO Performance Wear Liquid Foundation in Cappuccino, £29.
Sunday Friday
‘I prefer full-coverage all day, every day. I apply it on top of my usual primer and buff with a beauty blender, adding a setting spray. It stays flawless all day long, which is just what I want.’
‘I’m running around town and I try a lighter finish. It’s not working. I have to blot my face several times as I look shiny and I notice a red undertone. I up the coverage and it’s back to its best.’
Verdict: ‘It’s the perfect formula for a flawless base that goes nowhere, but I’ll save it for nights out, not my daytime routine.’
BEAUTY
day Laura Jane Turner, Look’s Digital Writer: Age: 27. Skin tone: Fair. Skin type: Combination/ hyper-sensitive. Skin concern: Breakouts and redness. Foundation to test: YSL All Hours Foundation in B40, £33.50.
niGHt Friday
‘Friday night can’t come soon enough! I apply this YSL shade with my fingers (I always do) and it not only smells pleasant but blends out well, too. I like a full coverage base and this holds out and looks great in my selfies. It truly does what it says on the bottle.’
Saturday
‘My morning is blighted by an outbreak of spots. Sigh. I try to cover them and it’s not too bad, there’s no dryness. I go to the cinema and bawl my eyes out – but shock horror, when I leave, my base is fine, it’s handled my emotions. Could this foundation actually be The One?’
Sunday
‘Despite my plans for a Netflix day, I apply a little in the morning. It’s still OK after I’ve had a nap, but I touch-up as I leave the house. When a shop assistant asks how I manage to look so awake at 10pm, I realise this product has some serious staying power.’
Verdict: ‘It’s hard to find a foundation that promises the thick coverage I crave, while not making my skin feel as if it’s suffocating – and this definitely wins here. Add in the compliments I got, and I admit I’m completely won over.’
It truly does what it says on the bottle

Apparently, twice as many of us have bought a contour product this year than in 2016, and nearly half of all UK women aged 16-24 have tried their hand at face sculpting*. Still sceptical?
