Dahlkemper is new school board president By Emile Hallez Staff Writer

Newly elected Jeffco school board members Jill Fellman and Lesley Dahlkemper took the oath of office Nov. 10, nine days after voters selected them over challengers Jim Powers and Preston Branaugh. After certifying the county’s election results and swearing in the new members, the board unanimously voted to select Dahlkemper to succeed outgoing

Trivial reason

Conifer High Lobos’ center and power forward Jordan Danks said he was born in 1995, and he had no clue what the answers were to a lot of the questions. “I pretty much knew none of it,” Jordan said. Jordan, a junior, does know that the team is in bad need of new basketballs and practice jerseys, and he went to the event to support his team.

VFW members are asking people to bring two gifts for a child ages newborn to 17 years old or one gift card and receive a free breakfast. Gifts and gift cards will all go to benefit the MRC.

Food and toys

Cohen said a recent statistic on mountain families surprised her. “Ninety-four percent of clients that use the MRC food pantry are at or below the poverty line,” she said. “That surprised me.” MRC’s Leigh’s Pantry opened a few months ago, and the pantry has provided a central location for families along U.S. 285 to get food, perishables, baby items, school supplies and access to services through MRC. Though the food bank always is in need of perishable and non-perishable items to meet the increased needs of families in the holiday and winter months, some of the food will go to fill holiday baskets through St. Laurence Episcopal Church and MRC.

According to Swearingen, 90 percent of the money raised from the entry fees, donations and the proceeds from three celebrity basketballs that sold for $50 each will go to the school, and the other 10 percent will fund the church’s efforts at creating a youth program. Jordan said he learned a few things at the trivia event. “I learned that Val Kilmer was a big deal in the ’80s,” he said. “I just don’t see it.” Nick Cote, also a center and power forward, said it was good to see the community come out and support the team’s cause. He said the practice jerseys are more than five years old, and the team only has a few balls for practice and for games. “The balls get worn down really

Food baskets

This is Conrey’s first year coordinating the basket giveaways, and she said several local churches and service organizations have donated time, money and resources to help put the baskets together. Though St. Laurence and MRC provide most of the items that go into the baskets, the church and sponsors pick up the costs when supplies fall short. Conrey said it would be great if people could donate even a $25 gift card to St. Laurence or the MRC for holiday food items. The baskets are distributed to families in need from Evergreen to Grant. To donate a gift card, Conrey people can call the church at 303838-2457 and leave a message. “Even something as small as a $25 gift card would be a big help,” Conrey said. Conrey said it’s a complex effort to put together the food baskets and to help coordinate fulfilling holiday needs. “It’s just another piece of the puzzle,” Conrey said.

Toy collections

The MRC has placed eight boxes in businesses around the Conifer area to collect new toys for kids in need. Locations of the toy collection boxes include First Bank, Raven’s Restaurant, Staples, The Bistro at Aspen Peak Cellars at Clifton House Inn, and Bank of the West.

of projected budget cuts over the next two years. “The work ahead for this school district, for this board and our community is daunting,” she said. “We’ve got to collaborate to turn these tough economic times into great opportunities to help our kids thrive and excel.” She suggested a Nov. 17 study session be dedicated to a discussion about effective governing and leadership. “We have a profound responsibility to focus on what matters

most — student achievement and fiscal accountability. And research has shown that the school board’s work can have a direct result on student achievement,” Dahlkemper said. “To our community, I hope that you will hold us accountable every step of the way. We will continue to have two-way dialogs.” Contact Emile Hallez at emile@ evergreenco.com or 303-933-2233, ext. 22. For updates, check www .HighTimberTimes.com.

The MRC’s annual holiday party

Last year, 250 kids attended the MRC’s annual holiday party, but overall it serves about 500 kids with gifts and donations, said Mary Alice Cohen, the MRC’s family education director. “The party is for the community for families in need and a special celebration for the families to choose gifts for the kids they wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise,” Cohen said. For the kids, there will be crafts, music, treats and holiday games, and Santa will be there to meet with the children to hear their Christmas wishes. Cohen said the biggest treat for the kids would be a chance to make Christmas cards and gifts for their family members. All supplies will be provided by the MRC. “It’s giving both ways,” Cohen said. “Parents can give to their kids, and kids can give back to the family.” The holiday party is by invitation only, and Cohen recommends that people contact her office to determine if families are eligible. Cohen said people should call 303838-7552, ext. 22, because they may be eligible for services they aren’t aware of. Contact Barbara Ford at barbara@evergreenco.com or 303350-1043. tryouts, and it is getting ready for its Dec. 1 opening game at Lakewood. Both Jordan and Nick hope new equipment will help them on the road to a winning season. “It helps to motivate the team and makes us want to do a good job of representing our school,” Nick said. Danielle Baxter, a member of the winning team that scored 118 points, said she thought they won because they had a wide age range of contestants at her table, and all that ’80s knowledge made it easier

to answer the trivia questions. An answer she doesn’t have is how to provide schools with the equipment the sports programs need when school funding is being cut and programs lost. “When I was in high school, (equipment) was free,” she said. “Sports gives an education you just can’t get in the classroom.” Contact Barbara Ford at barbara@evergreenco.com or 303350-1043.
