The old Alaskan Way viaduct is used as the base structure for commercial farming operations. Rotating plant racks are housed in new buildings along with commercial and ofďŹ ce space. The Viaduct Green Trail will provide a local source of produce for the city and connect new waterfront development with Victor Steinbrook and Olympic Sculpture parks.

WONDERLAND

Garden of Varying Scale

Day Dream Field Mini Garden

Even in a small space, the Alice in Wonderland Garden brings the classic novel to life with whimsy and fun. Visitors can let their imaginations run wild: sliding down the rabbit hole, shrinking to the size of a doll, playing croquet with the queen, or simply daydreaming under a tree. The garden, like the book, serves to inspire curiosity and imagination for all.

POGUE’S RUN

A remnant is a leftover piece of cloth given a new life when added to a quilt. In a similar manner, Pogue’s Run (approximately 60 acres) is a left over piece of land within the city, sandwiched between a neighborhood and a highway, yet it serves a vital role in the city’s stormwater management system. This project seeks to give the land more meaning, weaving it into the fabric of the community, which is as diverse as the pieces of a quilt itself.

The park space along the Aurelian Wall becomes the point of interface for 4 various urban patterns. The development responds to inections from the wall, surrounding buildings, landmark churches and street grid patterns. Living units and public buildings frame a newly terraced space for large scale public gathering and individual enjoyment.

The project began with regional and local analysis and an inventory of existing buildings. Buildings were kept based on historical signiďŹ cance, location on the site, and reuse potential. Activities were sited based on need and proximity to residents. From this analysis a core area for activity and development was chosen.

Reused buildings and the addition of a sports super center and tennis/ multi use stadium, make the core area the center of the action. Dynamic buildings and landscape forms converge to make an exciting event space. Key design elements used throughout the plan are: Buildings retroďŹ tted with more glass for a more modern feel and a greater connection to the outdoors.

Plants used across the site were selected based on color impact, maintenance and winter interest. The therapy garden, viewed by workers and visitors to the adjacent doctor’s office and rehab center, uses attractive flowering plants to immerse users in beauty. Used in the base planting, garden heliotrope (valeriana officinalis) is aromatic and also used in medicines used to treat anxiety.

This landform along Washington Street is a landmark as well as part of the cross country course

The leftover fill from the excavation of the tennis stadium and other sunken spaces is used to create an eye catching and functional addition to the landscape through mounds. A 5k cross country course takes advantage of the sites existing and newly created topography to make an exciting and challenging course. Kilometer markers, popular places to take times and congregate, are marked with landforms or signposts on the course.

TRAVEL

Through my travels and work experience, I have been able to see ďŹ rst hand some amazing designs. The value of travel lies not only in being inspired, but also in understanding projects in a real, hands on way. Dimensions, detailing, comfort, and context are revealed and readily apparent when seeing a project up close and personal.

Projects explore residential design through LEED for Neighborhood development guidelines, incorporating mixed use and varying unit types from single family homes, town homes and apartments. Integration of habitat; opportunities for community gardens and farmers markets; and unique trafďŹ c calming elements are just a few elements explored in these designs.
