Recognition Day By: Darlene Poole, Recreation Coordinator (Acting) The 27th Recognition/Athlete of the Year Celebration last Saturday was a huge success with over 200 people in attendance. A sincere thank you to Honorable MP, Dr. Kellie Leitch, on behalf of the Government of Canada, the Citizens of Simcoe-Grey and herself, for awarding each of our recipients with certificates. Each year the Town of Wasaga Beach sets aside a day to recognize their athletes and volunteers. We recognized in total (6) sport teams consisting of baseball, soccer and hockey; (58) individuals and (1) Athlete of the Year for the 2014 year. The Town of Wasaga Beach is very proud of all their volunteers and athletes and it is always a nice way to recognize them for their hard work and dedication.

Presentation to the 2014 Athlete of the Year Patrick Ryall – Track & Field – Throwing Patrick is a 16 year old Wasaga Beach Resident. While in high school, Patrick starting off playing many sports, one being track and field. Patrick continued on with the track and field joining the South Simcoe Dufferin Track and Field Club in 2013 as a Thrower, specializing in Hammer, Weight Throw, Discus & Shotput.

In the year 2014 Patrick's accomplishments consisted of: 4th – OFSSA Provincial Track & Field – Discus Bronze Medalist Athletics Ontario Provincial Champions – Hammer 4th – Athletics Ontario Provincial Championships – Discus Silver Medalist – Athletics Ontario Provincial Indoor Championships – Weight Throw Bronze Medalist – Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Indoor Championships – Shotput Patrick was also chosen to represent District “E” (Local area) as part of the team that competed at the Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Championships. He was chosen by virtue of his high placing in several events at the local qualifying meet.

Breakfast at the Beach, May 14th Speaker –Aaron Roininen Trails and Cycle Tourism in Wasaga Beach and Area The Networking Committee for the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce our next 'Breakfast at the Beach' will be on Thursday, May 14th from 7:00am-8:30am.

The speaker will be Aaron Roininen. The breakfast will be held at the Beacon 146 45 St. N, Wasaga Beach. We will also be introducing our new Chamber president Ehab Masad.

Aaron will be speaking about the development of the new trails map for Wasaga Beach. He will also be educating the business community on the recent South Georgian Bay Cycling routes map that promotes cycle tourism in our area. Cycle Tourism is becoming quite popular and this talk will prepare you for what our community needs to do to accommodate these tourists. Traveling cyclists are looking for services in nearly every town they visit. By providing some or all of these services Wasaga Beach could become a favourite destination for bicycle travelers to visit, dine and spend the night.

Aaron has over 15 years of municipal, county, provincial and federal cartography and GIS (geographic information system) experience. He has worked on Trails Master Plans with the county of Simcoe and provided mapping and trails expertise for Mountain Life Magazine, Grey County Tourism, Free Spirit Tours and Laurentian Conservation area to name a few. He is currently working at the Town of Wasaga Beach on a GIS contract and he sits on the South Georgian Bay cycling committee and the Harold Culham Trail committee.

The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Networking Committee are delighted to welcome our Aaron as our speaker for what we believe will be a very informative and inspiring talk our local trails.

2 Red delicious Apples (cored and sliced) Juice of 1/2 Lemon 1 1/2 cups water 3 Tbsp Apricot preserves 2 tbsp water 1 sheet of puff pastry dough Flour for rolling Cinnamon Sugar (1/4 cup sugar and 1 Tbsp cinnamon) Store extra for next time Icing sugar for dusting Core the apples and Slice thin Squeeze the juice of 1/2 lemon in a bowl with 1- 1/2 cups of water.

Add the apples to the water and microwave for 3 minutes or until tender Drain and fold out the puff pastry sheet in a little flour Cut the puff pastry into 6 strips and brush with the apricot glaze mixed with the 2 tbsp water.

Arrange the apples along the top half of the puff pastry overlapping.

Sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar and fold the bottom half of the pastry over the apple slices.

Staring at one end roll up like a jelly roll.

Place in muffin tin and bake for 40 -45 minutes at 375 degrees.

Dust lightly with icing sugar.

This recipe makes 6 Apple roses.

Custard Sauce Ingredients 1 1/2 cups whole milk 6 large egg yolks 1/3 cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla Bring milk just to a boil in a 3-quart heavy saucepan and remove from heat. Whisk together yolks, sugar, vanilla and a pinch of salt in a bowl and add hot milk in a slow stream, whisking. Pour custard back into pot and cook over moderately low heat, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened and a thermometer registers 170°F. Pour through a strainer and serve warm.

Makes about 2 cups This sauce will keep for about 2 days in the refrigerator.

By Soren Klemmensen, Director at Central Ontario ATV Club Wasaga Beach Fish and Game Club (WBFGC) recently contacted Central Ontario ATV Club (COATV) in regards to possible shared use of their club house located in the Wasaga Beach Sports Park on Klondike Park Road.

Club houses cost money and can be a heavy burden on clubs, but they also create a great gathering and focal point for clubs activities and the community as a whole, so what better way than to share. At least that is our point of view at COATV and we were very pleased to accept WBFGC's offer. By sharing some of the costs we not only help each other out, but it keeps the club house zooming with activities which is good for the community as well.

WBFGC also contacted the local scouts who are now using the club house free of charge. It can be hard for the scouts to find great locations and hopefully this is the perfect fit for them with nature all around, access to bathrooms and the ability to get inside when the weather doesn't co-operate.

Our hope at COATV is that this will become a strong base, not only for our respective clubs, but that we can use it as a base for ATVing as a tourism product in our area. The proximity to town and the fact that Wasaga Beach is mainly a tourism focused town, makes ATVing a great complimentary offering that can help sell meals, gas and hotel rooms across town.

Especially in the shoulder seasons where town really need the extra business this could be of great added value for town.

The people from WBFGC need to be praised for their community spirit and foresight of creating a true activity hub.

Clubs and activities are a great way to help bring more business to town and we look forward to working together with both WBFGC and the local scouts for a promising future together.

3rd Annual GTMF Get Ready to Rock Get ready for the Third Annual Georgian Triangle Music Festival scheduled July 3rd and 4th sponsored in part by beach BOOSTER radio.

Conceptualized by Shawn Crozier, Founder and General Manager, Host of “Local Music Exposure” broadcast daily on beachBOOSTER radio at 9:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m., Owner of RockHop Records and Guitarist for Excellerater - needless to say a man with many talents.

This event is a multi-genre, multi venue, music fest showcasing talented musicians throughout Ontario and South Georgian Bay area. This year you can anticipate over 30 musical acts performing at various venues across our beautiful town from rock, blues, country, hip hop, jazz and singers/songwriters.

What makes this event so special? According to Crozier: “Trying to stay community oriented, Wasaga Beach is a gem in the sense with its longest fresh water beach the fact that tourism was at a bare bone minimum and this event is really embracing that and trying to bring it back to Wasaga Beach.”

To date, Shawn received 300 performers interested in being part of the upcoming music fest. “Need to review these artists and break it down into genre while selecting the most suitable acts for each genre specific venue,” said Crozier. Seven venues are expected and new to the event is a prominent stage at our main beach. Last year a Youth stage was added at the library and it was well received by the audience. Shuttle buses will likely be running again and details soon to follow.

Applications are now being accepted for vendors and sponsors. “Vendors are on a first come first serve up until July 1st and for sponsors end of May,” said Crozier. Some of the past sponsors included beach BOOSTER Radio, Rogers TV and What's Up Hut. “So far this year we have Rogers TV, beach BOOSTER and Plaid Toad Studios”. Shawn is also host of “Local Music Exposure” broadcast daily on www.beachboosterradio.com and he's been enjoying hosting this new program “I saw an opportunity on beach BOOSTER and pitched it to Joe Bickerstaff. I know a lot of local great acts around here that can be featured and would never get a chance to have their music played on standard radio. I want to give some recognition it's not easy to be a musician in a small area. This is where I drew the inspiration and it's going really well,” said Crozier.

Shawn is familiar with the indie scene being a musician he's the guitarist for his band, Excellerater.

Excellerater is participating in the “Battle of the Bands” competition and Shawn is hoping for some good news. A new drummer has been added.

Currently, Shawn is working on some merchandise and branding for Excellerater as he's gearing up for more concerts during the summer months while balancing his time with GTMF. For more information on Excellerater visit www.excellerater.com.

As all of us in Wasaga Beach sense a new and much deserved optimism, many of us are preparing for what has been the “unofficial” start of summer for generations... Victoria Day Weekend!

Our community has grown from a small hamlet, into a thriving village and then to a recognized resort town, once enjoying references like “Daytona of Canada” and “Canada's Premier Beachfront Resort”. Whether our population signs read several hundred or the current 18,000 plus, we still can offer residents and visitors a beautiful and unique resort opportunity with our trails, parks, meandering river, amazing sunsets and of course our World's Longest Freshwater Beach.

Although many people across our country and beyond have fond memories of our town, as we have welcomed families for over one hundred years, perhaps Wasaga Beach has “dropped off the radar” of many due to our complacency and possible neglect in promoting our offerings, while allowing some of the once popular activities so slip away and disappear.

In our current age of electronic communications, smart phones and social media, we now have an opportunity to remind the millions that Wasaga Beach is still here and we are working to once again provide our valued visitors with family friendly fun and entertainment in a resort atmosphere. If finding out about Wasaga Beach is “just a click away” for anyone on the planet, perhaps we as a united community can promote our town as a friendly and welcoming “resort”, made up of friendly and welcoming people?

Let's get back to our “small town” roots and simply be nice to not only our visitors... but to each other. Although all of us at times wish we could take back a spoken word that resulted in hurting a neighbour, friend or family member, the introduction of social media makes it far too easy in some cases to rush to criticize or make unkind remarks towards someone in our community and then immediately share that remark with the world. Most of us living in Wasaga Beach are here because of past memories and to enjoy the lifestyle our wonderful town offers, while recognizing the potential and future opportunities that now appear within reach. If the world is watching our town return to a fun and welcoming resort town, let's show the world that we are in fact the friendly, caring town that we who live here, know we are.

Be nice to each other and let's have fun! Wasaga Beach was built on fun and we can all enjoy what the future has to offer.

It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that there was a lot of alignment going on at the latest Council meeting held April 28th 2015. The Wasaga Beach council chambers was standing room only that night for the vote on whether or not the municipality should be purchasing seven waterfront properties in Beach Area 1 for a cost of $13.8 million.

Eighteen citizens were registered to make their opinions known as to what they thought about the deal. There were people who opposed the deal but a clear majority were for the deal based on the commentary and the cheers that were heard during the meeting.

When you have the Wasaga Beach Business Association, the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Wasaga Beach Women's Business Association along with a majority of people and business representatives making statements to support the deal this is what I would call the power of Community Alignment.

Last month we ushered in a brand new Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce Board which has great representation across our town businesses. This new Board led by new president Mr. Ehab Masad, will move forward with a new strategic plan offering a new vision “Wasaga Beach is the leading sustainable business community in Simcoe County” and a clear focus on member services, education and networking, a voice for our businesses and tourism.

For businesses , Social-Profit Organizations and a Community to thrive in the 21st Century there must be a deep alignment of all their stakeholder’s time, talent and treasure towards a common goal and it appears that we are heading in that direction.

When businesses, organizations, departments and individuals are aligned there is exponential power that is created as everyone shares an understanding of what the goals are, what their specific role is and what winning is all about.

As our Mayor Brian Smith so eloquently stated at the council meeting April 28th, we are placing our destiny in our own hands and moving forward. Now the heavy lifting will start and we need to provide the meaningful information and tangible tools in place to use the Power of Alignment to reach our goals and help build the Community we would all want to live, work and play in!

As many other service clubs, organizations and citizens join in and share the journey for a better Wasaga Beach there can be no stopping the efforts.

The community was first called Penetangore after the river. In 1857 the name was changed to that of the township in which it was located and which honoured James Bruce, earl of Elgin and Kincardine and Governor General of Canada from 1847 to 1854.

Jessica Stam (born April 23, 1986 in Kincardine) is a Canadian model. She is considered to be part of the crop of models described as "doll faces". In 2007, Forbes named her fifteenth in the list of the World's 15 Top-Earning Supermodels, earning at an estimated total of $1.5 million in the past 12 months.

For the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2006, she opened the fourth runway theme "Pink". The appearance also included a featurette showing a Victoria's Secret commercial shoot and what a model sees when walking the runway.

She was presented on the May 2007 cover of American Vogue as one of the "World's Next Top Models." Roberto Cavalli ad campaign. She has also walked in the 2006, 2007, and 2010 Victoria's Secret fashion shows. For F/W 08, Stam can be seen in ads for Giorgio Armani's "Onde" fragrance, Dolce & Gabbana and Bulgari. The Wall Street Journal featured Jessica Stam in their article on "How to Walk Like a Model" and taught a DKNY intern her runway moves.

In 2011, Stam was named the face of CoverGirl, teaming up with makeup artist Pat McGrath for the brand's new Lip Perfection campaign.

Stam is placed on a list of "Industry Icons" by models.com, "Icons" being defined as models having "at least 8+ years at blue chip level under their belts" and "still currently working".

Each year the Town Alan Ritchie of Wasaga Beach sets aside a day to recognize their athletes and volunteers. We Wayne Crone recognized in total (6) sport teams consisting of baseball, soccer and hockey; (58) Alex Sunderland Valerie Dunsford individuals and (1) Athlete of the Year for the 2014 year. While in high school, Patrick Andrew Gentles starting off playing many sports, one being track and field. Patrick continued on Joseph Saunders with the track and field joining the South Simcoe Dufferin Track and Field Club in Kate Gass 2013 as a Thrower, specializing in Hammer, Weight Throw, Discus & Shotput.

Program In the year 2014 Patrick's accomplishments consisted of: Peter Wilson 4th – OFSSA Provincial Track & Field – Discus Program Bronze Medalist Athletics Ontario Provincial Champions – Hammer Dawn Braid Marlene Hayes 4th – Athletics Ontario Provincial Championships – Discus John/Tori Arrigo Silver Medalist – Athletics Ontario Provincial Indoor Championships – Weight Ellen Bowie Throw Lisa Acker Bronze Medalist – Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Indoor Championships – Brian/Joanne Smith Shotput Patrick was also chosen to represent District “E” (Local area) as part of the team Denise Henry that competed at the Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Championships. He was Errol Flinn chosen by virtue of his high placing in several events at the local qualifying meet. George Kimber Starr Scott On Patrick's days off he enjoys Nordic skiing, basketball and is member of the Stephanie McDermott Navy Cadets.

Eti Levy Monique Kovacs, Patrick's Throwing coach has commented how hard he has Tena Kellett worked to achieve some wonderful results, much of a joy he is to coach and that David Connolly he has taken on some great leadership roles with the club.
