John V. Sinclair, conductor | Members of the Bach Festival Choir Oftenand Orchestraoverlooked, the prolific composer Franz Schubert was a hugely consequential figure in music history. His graceful Mass in G and Intende voci, along with complementary orchestral gems, will be performed by members of the Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra in the intimate setting of Tiedtke Concert Hall. In the Insights & Sounds tradition, the musical presentation will be enhanced by Dr. John Sinclair’s commentary on its composition, history, and significance and is sure to convince you that Schubert’s music is indeed sublime. TheBach Vocal ArtistsBachFestivalSociety proudly announces the debut of the Bach Vocal Artists, an elite professional vocal chamber ensemble for music lovers in Central Florida. Members of the Bach Vocal Artists, selected from all over the nation, will be placed in residence and will perform three programs in their inaugural season. Join us for the first of these, featuring the glorious music of Joseph Haydn, Johann Hummel, and Fanny Hensel. This evening of pure elegance will mark the beginning of an exciting new Bach Festival Society tradition. 7:30 p.m. | Knowles Memorial Chapel Trumpeter Chuck Seipp and organist Randall Sheets are two performers at the top of their craft. Dr. Sheets is Ceremonial Organist for Arlington National Cemetery (retired), and Dr. Seipp is Sergeant Major (retired) from The United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own” in Washington, DC. For the past several seasons, the Seipp/Sheets Duo has performed as many as 25 programs yearly to enthusiastic audiences across America and were featured at the prestigious Piccolo Spoleto Organ Festival. The recital is free to the public and funded by Rollins College through the Faith Emeny Conger ’54 Visiting Organist Series in Honor of John Oliver Rich ’38. This is a free event and seating is General Admission.

Just one evening each year, Central Park is illuminated with the Museum’s elegant Louis Comfort Tiffany windows for a concert presented by the Bach Festival Choir and Brass Ensemble. Continuing our tradition of presenting the world’s best organists at the Annual Bach Festival, we are thrilled to bring back celebrated organist Paul Jacobs to Knowles Memorial Chapel. This Grammy Award–winning artist will remind us why the organ has been called “King of the Instruments.” The New York Times called Jacobs “a virtuoso of dazzling technical acumen,” and The Washington Post stated that he is “one of the great living virtuosos.” Free and open to the public, this recital is made possible by Rollins College through the Faith Emeny Conger ’54 Visiting Organist Concert Series in Honor of John Oliver Rich ’38. Celebrating centuries of impactful music by women composers, this thoughtfully curated program features music of Lili Boulanger, who was a Grand Prix de Rome winner; Marianna Martines, who often played duets with Mozart; Amy Beach, America’s first successful woman composer; and Valerie Coleman, who was named by Performance Today as a 2020 Artist of the Year. Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty, love, and victory, is a fitting emblem for these super-women whose music will delight and inspire. This program continues the Bach Festival tradition of featuring two world-class artists in classical music’s most iconic concertos. Adam Golka, last here in 2020 when performing all 32 Beethoven sonatas, will be playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Itamar Zorman will perform the Max Burch Violin Concerto No. 1 and O Martirio Dos Insetos (The Martyrdom of Insects) by Hector Villa-Lobos. The program will also feature an award-winning piece by Rollins College’s own Daniel Crozier.

This performance provides a rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s most celebrated string quartets with one of America’s foremost pianists. Proclaimed by The New York Times as “a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs,” Jeremy Denk is a winner of a MacArthur Genius Fellowship and the Avery Fisher Prize. The Takács Quartet, formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, has won a Grammy and the Wigmore Hall Medal. The Bach Festival Society is honored to present this stellar collaboration.

For the final concert of their inaugural year, the Bach Vocal Artists will present a program entitled “The Marriage of Music and Poetry” patterned after a Rollins College class by the same name taught for many years by Dr. Sinclair. This hybrid program will use beautiful choral settings and insightful commentary to explore the relationship between music, the language of sound, and poetry, the music of language. Tickets from $25

Thewith Guest Soloistsfocusofthistimely and compelling program is the coveted, yet elusive goal of peace. The musical centerpiece of this poignant program, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace by Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins, was written to commemorate the victims of the Kosovo Crisis in 1999 and portrays both the horrors of war and the yearning for peace. In addition to elements of the traditional mass, this work includes words of Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Old Testament Psalms, the Islamic call to prayer, and the Sanskrit Mahabharata. In the last masterworks concert of the season, the Bach Choir and Orchestra, along with four guest soloists, are featured in this powerful and emotional performance. Tickets from $25

Learn more about the history of this profound genre through spirituals sung by members of the Bach Festival Choir and guest soloist Samuel McKelton. McKelton, lauded by The New York Times for the “natural elegance” of his lyric tenor voice, is dedicated to the preservation of the Negro Spiritual. He will perform some of his favorites and share his perspective their historical, cultural, and personal significance.

ABOUT THE BACH FESTIVAL SOCIETY OF WINTER PARK

The Bach to the Future initiative provides programs for students from pre-K to high school, including the FreshStARTS program which brings unique musical learning experiences into the classroom featuring the Bach Vocal Artists. The High School Honors Choral Festival invites local groups for workshops with collegiate choral directors from across the country, culminating in the annual selection of the Choir of Distinction. Master Classes led by world-renowned visiting artists give students and patrons a unique insider’s perspective on the process of fine-tuning classical musical excellence.

The Bach Festival Choir is comprised of auditioned singers, rehearsing year-round. The Young at Heart Chorale is a volunteer singing group for those 55+ years young performing at local community centers.
