Destiny’s is a place called Little Tujunga where they have small canyons that are claimed to be fun. Her best experience was riding the back way to Palos Verde’s where they have small switchback turns. Some of Chhea’s best experiences involve canyons; eventually she would like to experience the knee drag. Track days will come into play when she is able to find a full set of leathers her size. Good things come in small packages but small packages are also very hard to find. Her present passion and future hobby is to do stunting. Her Honda was in the works of becoming a stunt bike until she was hit leaving the frame cracked at the motor mount. There is no doubt in her mind that if she could have a stunt bike, it be a Honda f4i. Two feet wheelies will just have to do for now until she repairs the crack in her frame. A few of her favorite stunters are Crazy Kyle, she explains his style to be over the top with always trying new things and going all out. She also enjoys Jessica Maine’s style. It is because of Jessica Maine that Destiny became encouraged to ride. With small tricks and tips from Maine, Chhea was on a bike in no time. Like most, Destiny Chhea has a scary riding moment. ill Brackman has spent over 25 years in the automotive industry restoring, fabricating, and customizing many old and vintage cars. The vision to build his beautiful “Chopper” came to him while working on a front engine dragster. He had recently made some hand shaped body panels and was preparing to paint them. The panels were beautiful and Brackman thought it would be a shame to simply cover them up with paint. So, right then and there he knew he had to advance his skills and discover everything he could about shaping metal. After scouring the Internet, buying every related book and video on the market and with a few hands on courses he saw the vision of his next project. With a strong desire to get his project built he went to an “Easy Rider” show for some inspiration. He searched, prodded and inquired but still left the show uninspired. CYCLEPATHMAG.COM | 21

Although he still had the images of skulls, paint jobs, clothing and jewelry in his head. Two weeks later it hit him. Build a Custom Bike with hand shaped one off polished aluminum parts. He started to construct the tank and skull assembly. He first shaped a mock up out of foam to get the size and shape he was looking for as well as checking for clearances for the carb, exhaust, frame, etc. Once that was achieved, Bill took fiberglass molds of the foam skull in large sections. Taking the fiberglass skins and sunk them into boxes of wet concrete to backup the fiberglass. He then hammered aluminum sheets into those forms. Once all the pieces of the puzzle shaped, he welded them together with a torch. The torch leaves softer welds unlike a tig welder. This allows the metal 22 | CYCLEPATHMAG.COM

to be further shaped and planished with less likelihood of cracking or hard spots. The top of the skull is the tank (i.e., not a cover). It has a flush mounted pop up fuel cap. It’s shaped from a combination of .125, .090, and .080 thick 3003 aluminum alloy. It holds between 4-5 gallons. The oil tank is hand formed from .125 thick alloy and holds over 5 quarts. The air filter, seat pan, headlight, and taillight are all hand formed. These parts are riveted together with countersunk solid copper rivets; the trim rings are hand made from stainless sheet. This bike is a well-built handcrafted piece of art that ranks up there with the best Motorcycle builders out there. We can’t wait for the next Willard design; it will surely be another artwork for automotive history.


Does your bike have a nickname? DeathWish How long have you been riding? My dad was a Rupp dealer from the late 60’s until 1973 when the oil embargo killed off the recreational business. I ended up with an unsold Rupp Black Widow Mini Bike – it was cool: spoke wheels, knobby tires, Dellorto carb with velocity stack and straight exhaust. I rode the wheels off of it. How you got started building bikes? During my career in auto body restoration and customization, I had a job painting some hand shaped aluminum body panels for a front engine dragster. The panels were beautiful and I thought it was a shame to cover them with paint. It was then that I knew I had to advance my skills and learn everything I could about shaping metal. I searched the Internet, bought every book and video I could find, and took some hands-on metal shaping courses. With a strong desire to build something, I went to an Easy Rider Show for inspiration. I left uninspired, but still had the images of skull- paint jobs, clothing, and jewelry dancing in my head weeks later. Then, it hit me. What was the first bike you built? DeathWish What bike builders style do you like? As soon as I saw Billy Lane’s orange bike on Biker BuildOff, I’ve liked his style and creativity. What problems you faced when building? Trying to keep the noise down as there was an awful lot of hammering. I think my neighbors call me the Hammerroid. What other bikes do you own? I had a couple of mini bikes and then dirt bikes. Then I picked up a Kawasaki 500 triple 2-stroke street bike – baaaaw-weeeee! I stunk like 2-stroke everywhere I went. I had it for three weeks until it finally seized 25 years ago. That’s been it until this one. What kind of looks do you get when people see you riding or see the bike? People seem a little perplexed until they recognize that it’s a skull, then they smile. What is your favorite Motorcycle? What are your future plans? Vintage Henderson Inline 4…timeless good looks and fast. Do you plan on building anymore bikes? My next bike will be a sport bike with an alloy skull – meaner and edgier with lots of really long, skinny, sharp teeth. Any takers? Favorite Motorcycle movie and why? This probably sounds a little cliché, but Easy Rider. I like Captain America, Billy’s bike, and Dennis Hopper. Who would you like to thank? Wheelie

“Teach me to how to wheelie”, At one time or another we all get curious. Curiosity comes into play when we see our buddies or a video and say, “that doesn’t look hard, I can do that.” When you ask friends or buddies about a wheelie, their reply is “just give it some gas.” Some people take that advice and some get intimidated. That advice may work but there just has to be a more methodical way to learn. If this advice doesn’t work for you try to get someone who thinks logically about stunting and take the time to practice, anyone could in fact learn to wheelie - girls included! Many people start riding street bikes enjoying the adrenalin and getting addicted to the freedom and power of riding a motorcycle. Some want more; more control, more confidence, and to learn to do a wheelie. Riding around town you might see someone riding a wheelie your eyes light up. Don’t just try it on the street or freeway, our best advice to you is to find your local stunt spot, meet someone who is considered “a real stunter” and ask him to introduce you to the unique world of stunting. Streetbike Freestyle or “stunting” is an exciting evolving sport driven by riders looking to make a community and lifestyle completely their own. With factory and cooperate sponsors and many competitions like XDL, And StuntFarm, stunting is becoming what one might consider a legitimate sport. The participants of this up and coming sport will have better advice then just “gas it.” These riders are a tightly knit community of enthusiasts and through sharing tips, ideas, and practice habits; they’re causing stunting to evolve very quickly. The control these riders have of their bikes is amazing! While you can just do very basic stunts on a stock streetbike you may decided to make the commitment and buy a bike and set it up for stunting. Look for your bike and get it properly set up for stunting, get the proper gear, now your ready to hit the Spot or Closed course. First off this sport is not for the weak or timid. maintenance, a lot of determination, and discipline. Don’t give up, the tricks do not come easy! Everybody may struggle to learn the stunts. Stunting has many mental, physical, and social barriers to overcome. As a male dominated sport, female stunters were not taken very serious. Now days, there are some great female stunters doing their thing and showing the crowd that they too can be just as good. Overall stunting can be a rewarding struggle with many lessons. You can learn to do wheelies which is the foundation to move on to the more advanced tricks. Throttle control is an art, once that is obtained you can move on to more technical tricks. Stunting is a demanding sport for anyone. If you’re thinking about learning to stunt there are a few things to consider. What do you want out of stunting? If you just want to learn a controlled wheelie, there are various schools that can teach you this with professional instructors and the aid of a wheelie bar. If you want to really get into the sport, contact your local stunters. They have a world of knowledge, from setting up your bike, technique, and gear, which will help make it easier and safer. When preformed correctly, stunts on a motorcycle are a beautiful expression of control and confidence on a motorcycle. Don’t be intimidated by reckless attitudes and methods. Logic and practice create a skilled rider, regardless of gender. *IMPORTANT NOTICE. The craft of stunting and its practices are a very specialized sport performed in a controlled area under proper supervision, with other riders, while wearing full protective gear. A stunter’s motorcycle is very specifically adapted/altered to assist in performing these stunts, if your bike is not! Do not attempt to perform these stunts on your own or on public roads. Matt Bergen

Matthew Bergen was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1982. His love for motorcycles began at the age of four. Matt’s father Bob Bergen rode a Honda night hawk and he would take his brother and him out on the back seat through the canyons. Matt remembers it as “an amazing thrill”. At age 19 in 2002 Matt purchased his first bike. His first time riding a street bike made him feel just as he did as a kid, he was hooked! Matt attended his first track day about a year after getting a bike and instantly adapted to the race track. His first race was in 2005 as a novice amateur. Within his first year racing he accumulated enough points and was turning lap times and competing at pro levels! The first expert champion for Matt was at the club level and it was in the series with Willow Springs Motorcycle Club (WSMC). Advancing at a very rapid rate, Matt threw himself into three race series’ AFM, WSMC, and WERA. As he continued to compete he accumulated a lot of sponsors but one in particular helped push Matt to the next level, the AMA. CYCLEPATHMAG.COM | 49

Matt competed in his first AMA national event in 2008, at Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA, now he competes in Daytona Sport Bike. The event was televised and there were about 100,000 people in attendance over the weekend! The thrill was like no other and even though he was living it Matt was in shock to be competing with the fastest and best riders in the country! Placing 26th out of about 35 racers on his first visit to the track and first race with the “big dogs” was an amazing feeling to him. Even after crashing out but still qualifying he was stoked! Matt currently coaches riders/racers that want to take their riding/racing to the next level. His passion for motorcycles has taken him to places he never thought possible. His dedication to the sport and strive for more speed is never ending. When considering the risk, one would say that Matt must be crazy or even stupid. Knowingly and accepting the risk, everything Matt does is very calculated and taken very serious. Matt’s skill has prevented him from being seriously hurt considering that some crashes have involved speed in excess of 120 mph. After healing from a knee surgery, 2011 will be his next full season in competing for a championship. Let’s keep our eyes peeled for Matt and show your support! Motorcycle Saftey Foundation Teaching you how to ride

“H

ow old are you?” she asked. “19” I replied, to which she responded “You must take a BRC to get your M1 if you are under 21.” This is where this story begins. A BRC, Basic Rides Course, is one of the many courses the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF),

a non- profit organization offers all motorcyclists. By working with the Federal and State government, military and other agencies, the MSF, has promoted safety through rider training and education for over 35 years. Training for riders of all skill levels, a service the MSF provides, has helped many enjoy a lifetime of safe and responsible motorcycling. With over 2,600 training sites worldwide, the MSF has trained over 5.7 million riders since 1973. My first thought on taking this class? I have 54 | CYCLEPATHMAG.COM


been riding dirt bikes since I was a child, I can handle riding on the street. Assuming street riding would be much easier than the dessert dirt I learned to ride on, I questioned what exactly this class had to offer me. What was there to learn, that I didn’t already know. I assumed the class was best for people who didn’t know how to ride or have never ridden a motorcycle. Doubts in mind, I proceeded with taking the suggested course. I was pleasantly surprised. The BRC is a three day course that consists of a one day class covering the MSF curriculum, and two days out on the range practicing and executing safe riding skills. When taking the class I realized I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. The course is a great introduction to riding safely. Class participation was encouraged on the first day. All riders had the opportunity to share their experiences with one another. It dawned on me that the class was made up of riders with a broad range of skill levels. A wealth of informative material was shared during this class; material that I have referenced numerous times to date. At the end of day one, you must pass a written exam to ensure you are ready for the Rider’s Range on during the next two days. Day two and three, in my opinion, are the most fun. We were able to experience hands on training on how to ride safely. It was on day two that I was able to implement what I learned the day prior. Street strategies, turning and braking techniques, as well as swerving were all practiced. At the end of the third day, a riders test must be successfully completed in order pass the BRC and receive a test waiver. The waiver exempts riders from taking the DMV motorcycle riders test. In my opinion, this class is an essential tool in learning how to ride safely. It has helped me prepare for what the road might have in store for me. I encourage ALL riders to take the time and enroll in a Basic Rides Course!

D

on’t get scared if you see something flying through Orange County. You might catch Jeff is out hitting the streets of O.C. He rides with the bike Crew Combat Ryders that Jeff and his best friend Erik Partida started back in 2006. They now have a 2nd chapter In Northern California. At one point the riders had a successful bike night of their own at station house grill in O.C. before it closed down that, lasted a whole summer and got a lot bigger than they imagined. They are like a big family of ambitious riders and motorcycle enthusiasts. Jeff started to get ideas to customize his CBR and he was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. Knowing the right people doesn’t hurt. Jeff put the call out to Tony Sesto and the two put a plan in action to make his dream come true. Since junior high and through high school classmates called Jeff Casper. Now with a theme and a plan of attack it was time for Tony put his hands on the Honda and Casper was created. He found out for many other reasons that he was meant to have that theme, because he now felt that he was on a very spiritual path in his life. The theme really describes Jeff’s character. Jeff has been working in sales most of my life but at this point he is looking towards other opportunities’ he is a proud father of Alexis his 2 1/2 year old daughter and a very important part of his journey. How long have you been riding? I bought my first sport bike in 2001, but was riding dirt bikes before that. If you can change one thing, what would it be? Probably would want to put a lot more detail to the theme. Do you plan on building another bike? Not anytime soon. What if any problems did you run into when building? The only thing that comes to mind is having the finances to do other upgrades and things I would like to do to my bike. How did you decide on the color? White is my favorite color, the blue came in as Tony Sesto and I discussed the theme The pearl in the white is what we decided would help kick it off to make everything pop. How did you get started riding bikes? Growing up I always wanted to get a sport bike, and as soon as I turned 18 the opportunity became available for me to purchase my first sport bike. I signed the papers, took it home and taught myself to ride. What was the first Bike you rode? The first Sport bike that I rode was my 2001 Honda Cbr F4i. What bike builder’s style do you like? I really like Tony Sestos Style What other bikes do you own? As of now, this is it! What was the first bike you owned? My first sport bike I owned was a 2001 Honda Cbr F4i. My first dirt bike was a 98 Yamaha YZ125. Do you ride this bike around town? I ride it everywhere, any chance I get! What kind of looks do you get when people see you riding? A lot of surprised and impressed looks, stares, and pointing... What are your future plans for your bike?
