HONORING LARRY FITZGERALD Larry Fitzgerald is a philanthropist, business owner, investor and just completed his 17th season as a wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. As much as Larry loves playing football, his proudest accomplishments have happened for him off the field.

Fitzgerald is the proud father of three boys and while he resides in Arizona, he splits his time in the off season between his home state of Minnesota and wherever his passion for travel takes him. When not with his boys, you can find Larry on the golf course. In 2020, he won his second Pebble Beach Pro Am tournament. He is also an amateur photographer and always has his camera with him to capture images from his extensive travel.

In 2005, Larry founded The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation in honor of his mother, who passed away as a result of breast cancer in 2003. The Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund makes grants to promote reading and effective use of technology for K-12 youth.

Growing up as a Club kid in Minneapolis himself, Fitzgerald understands the importance that Clubs can have in a child’s life, especially the hours spent after school. Being a part of the Clubs encourages a healthy lifestyle, academic success, career pathways and workforce readiness, and good character and leadership, which are just a few of the qualities that pushed Larry to become the philanthropist he is today.

Larry also discovered his passion for business early on and has accumulated an impressive portfolio of investments. As a business owner, Larry prides himself in serving as a leader and also learning from his partners like the Phoenix Suns and most recently as a board member of Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Deciding what your post-graduation plans are is exciting. It’s a major step toward a person’s future, and it should feel like an epic occasion. Creating a pathway after high school is a critical part of a successful future. Yet, too many young people today are choosing not to pursue higher education or careers they’ve dreamed about throughout their childhood. College Signing Day celebrates all students committed to pursuing an education past high school. Whether they plan to attend a community college, a 4-year university, a certification program, the military, trade school, or any other education past high school, College Signing Day shows full, inclusive support of all students making decisions for their future. Starting at age 8, BGCAZ begins conversations with members about their talents, interests, and plans for the future. At Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley, we know there’s nothing more important than getting an education past high school, whether at a professional training program, a community college, a four-year college or university, or in the military. Tonight we’ll learn more about the post-secondary plans of ALL of our Youth of the Year and we will look ahead to the students who are coming behind them. Let’s celebrate these students together! #CollegeSigningDay #BetterMakeRoom

THE JOURNEY TO THE STARS Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley serves as one of the critical interventions in the lives of thousands of youth in our Valley communities. Many Club youth and teens are navigating rough roads at home and consider the Club to be their second home and safe space. Each Youth of the Year (YOY) have faced challenges and hardships that most of us have never and will never experience, especially at their age. They’ve watched their families struggle with loss, violence, poverty, and more. With the support of our Clubs’ Youth Development Professionals, these teens have worked hard to not let these situations hold them back from accomplishing their goals and becoming leaders in their community. Every year, each Club works to identify exceptional teens who embody the traits that Boys & Girls Clubs work to instill in each of our 17,000+ members. Youth of the Year Candidates are selected based on service leadership in the areas of home and family, character, community service, Club service, academic and life goals, along with written essays on Club Experience, Vision for America’s Youth, and Personal Brand. In addition, candidates are judged on poise, self-confidence, and public speaking. Once selected, these teens begin

a life-changing journey. They are challenged to explore their personal history, formative experiences, finding meaning in their talents and challenges, and sharing those with the world in only a 3-minute speech.

& Girls Clubs staff at the Celebrating Youth Event. Each teen presented their final speeches to an esteemed panel of judges and had the opportunity for a one-on-one meeting with each of them as part of the judging process.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley Youth of the Year program requires a strong commitment from each candidate. We set high expectations for our members, especially candidates for this program. Through the Youth of the Year program, candidates have the opportunity to develop their writing and presentation skills as well as engage in specialized workshops designed to help them find their unique “voice” and story to share with our prestigious judging panel.

We hope that you will enjoy the stories of courage, resilience, compassion, kindness, and hope from these extraordinary teens. Thanks to your generosity tonight, each of these teens has the opportunity to pursue their dreams!

These are just 8 outstanding Youth of the Year representing the 17,000+ youth we serve. In January, our Youth of the Year candidates shared their powerful stories with friends, family, and Boys 12

The 2020-2021 Youth of the Year Journey is led by committed and caring team members – Jason Reynolds of the Spencer D. & Mary Jane Stewart Branch, Branch Director Ruben Cabral of the Chandler Compadres Branch, Branch Director German Celaya of the Harry & Sandy Rosenzweig Branch, Angela Davis of the Superstition Mountain Branch, and Johana Lopez of the Warner & Shirley Gabel Branch.

Presentation Training with Toastmasters Thanks to Toastmasters International, our 2021 Youth of the Year candidates improved their communication and presentation skills. The talented volunteers and speakers from Toastmasters assisted the Youth of the Year candidates in the development

of their speeches, providing guidance and feedback in a supportive, respectful, and professional environment. Youth of the Year Styling The Youth of the Year journey includes a special shopping trip to select dresses and suits for the Stars event.

Our sincere thanks to Travis Anglin and Barry Schoeneman for their commitment to providing expert styling of our gentlemen. Becky McHolland and Corrina Munson assisted our young lady with styling, with the support of the team at Macy’s this year.

2020 YOUTH OF THE YEAR WINNER

SAMIA RUIZ

T he Club shaped me into the person that I am – my passions, morals, interests and my personality!

2020 Youth of the Year Winner Update In February 2020, Samia Ruiz earned the title as the 2020 Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro-Phoenix Youth of the Year. From there, she went on to participate in the Arizona Youth of the Year program. She performed well and earned scholarships for her to use in college. Samia graduated high school from Cesar Chavez High School in Laveen last May and started her freshman year of college in the fall of 2020 at Tennessee State University (TSU). She is currently studying to become an Athletic Trainer and is gaining real-world experience by assisting the college football team with sports medicine. In addition to her studies, Samia made the President’s List this year, which is awarded to students who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.0 over all semesters at TSU. She was also just admitted into the Tennessee State University Honors College and she plans on living in the Honors Dormitory next semester to meet more people on her campus. “The staff at Boys & Girls Clubs really helped me out when it came time to apply for college and scholarships. Even outside of academics, the Clubs helped me navigate through my personal journeys that took place outside of the Club. They really were more than mentors for me – they were a second family and a strong support system.” 1313

This is what a hero looks like. Every time you wash your hands with soap, wear a mask and social distance, you’re protecting your neighbors against COVID-19. And if that’s not heroic, we don’t know what is.

Opportunity is out there. We can help them reach IT.

The impacts of COVID-19 revealed the unfortunate reality of a digital divide, adding increased hardship to those without access to modern technology and stable internet access. At Insight, we believe in the power of technology to create meaningful connections and transform the future. The Insight Reach program helps put technology into the hands of boys and girls who need it — because opportunity should always be within reach.

OUR SCHOLARSHIP FUND A critical component of Boys & Girls Clubs’ programming is our Scholarship Program, which helps Club Alumni pursue their dreams of a post-secondary education. Proceeds from the Youth of the Year events support the programs and activities offered at Boys & Girls Clubs, as well as provide scholarship and financial aid to qualifying members. Since the inception of the scholarship program, over 300 Club members have been awarded college scholarships. SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT FOR BGCAZ ALUMNI Thanks to The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation, BGCAZ employs a College Access and Success Manager who supports our Club alumni as they pursue their post-secondary education and certificate programs. Many of our students are firsttime college goers and the additional personalized support helps us to ensure their long-term success in their career and academic programs. Last year, BGCAZ distributed $113,873 in scholarship support to 41 Club alumni. The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation awarded two of BGCAZ’s young women with the Renee Parsons Girls Leadership Award. This scholarship awards the recipient up to $80,000 of scholarship funding over four years and a new laptop. The recipient for the fourth annual Renee Parsons Girls Leadership Award is Kaiah James. Inspired by the list of applicants and her personal conversation with Kaiah James, Renee Parsons decided to offer a second BGCAZ girls’ leadership scholarship this year – the Renee Parsons Excellence Award – to Amaya Jones, the 2021 Youth of the Year candidate for the Louis & Elizabeth Sands Branch. This scholarship presents the recipient up to $40,000 of scholarship funding over four years and a new laptop. OUR EDUCATION FUND The education fund is an account set aside for our current Youth of the Year candidates to use towards their post-secondary education, including paying for college or technical training school tuition. If the candidate is a high school sophomore or junior, they are able to use the funds for college accredited classes, school supplies, or trainings. The education fund is also available to the candidates who are seniors to help them with other expenses a traditional scholarship may not cover. If you would like more information on donating to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley, please contact us at 602-954-8182 or visit bgcaz.org/donate.
