YOUTH OF THE YEAR AWARD The Youth of the Year Award honors the most outstanding members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. These young people have demonstrated exceptional contributions to their families, schools, communities, and Clubs in the areas of leadership, academic achievement, and community service. These outstanding Club members exhibit the positive impact Boys & Girls Clubs has on their lives and the thousands of youth we serve. This year’s winners truly demonstrate the bright futures our members are building for themselves every day in our Clubs around Denver. Typically, we are able to honor our Youth of the Year winners in person at our Gala; this year, we encourage you to read about them and celebrate them with us virtually!
8
YOUTH OF THE YEAR AWARD
Each year, members are nominated for the Youth of the Year award at their respective Club in three age categories: ages 10-13, juniors ages 14-15, and seniors ages 16-18. The junior and senior winners for each Club go on to compete at the city level. The senior city winner will advance to the state competition, and possibly the regional and national levels, competing with exceptional Youth of the Year winners from across the country. Each Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver Club Youth of the Year honoree will be awarded the J. Reid Lichtenfels Memorial Scholarship, which they may use to pursue a post-high school education, promoting future career success.

2020 YOUTH OF THE YEAR AWARD
SENIOR CITY WINNER Janeaya R.
Owen Boys & Girls Club 16 years old, member for 10 years
10
After ten years as a Club member, Janeaya believes the Club serves as an outlet to escape from her reality and home life – and learn and grow. Janeaya says she initially joined the Club as a blank canvas, but throughout the years, she has filled this canvas with the things she loves most, which she discovered at the Club. Janeaya’s love for the Club began with her love of sports. Over the course of her membership, Janeaya has become a role model and leader on and off the fields and courts. Her relationships at the Club are a joy to witness, especially her connections with younger members. She also serves as a member of Keystone, a youth leadership program within the Club. Janeaya is always the first to volunteer to help with various Club activities including the haunted house, Hispanic heritage family dinner, and numerous fundraisers. In addition to being heavily involved within the club, she also participates in Student Council at her school and takes her education seriously, as she has a 4.2 grade point average. Now, Janeaya is proud to add Senior City Youth of the Year to her canvas as well. Janeaya continues to excel and grow every day; she is creating her own masterpiece.
2020 YOUTH OF THE YEAR AWARD
JUNIOR CITY WINNER Jonathan M.
Johnson Boys & Girls Club 15 years old, member for 2 years Jonathan joined the Johnson Boys & Girls Club when he moved to Denver at thirteen, and says the Club was a vital support system during that difficult transition. At the Club, he quickly made friends and participated in a variety of programs. He joined Keystone, the Club’s leadership group and became a Fine Arts Peer Leader, hosting piano lessons for members. Always generous and respectful, Jonathan is a role model for all. He shows others how important it is to balance leadership, academics, and extracurricular activities. In addition to Club programs, Johnathan is involved in choir, theater, orchestra, and is a straight A student.

TONIGHT’S MUSIC Denver-based musician Nathaniel Rateliff was a small-town kid who connected with something much larger: music. Growing up in Hermann, Missouri, he started his music career playing in his family’s band at church. Music became an obsession for him and his friends over the years. “We would walk around these deserted country roads and talk about music all the time, how it can change the world and how it could change our world,” recalls his bandmate Joseph Pope III. “Music was what we thought would save us.” In 1998 Pope and Rateliff moved to Denver where they worked nightshifts at a bottle factory and a trucking company while testing out their songs at open-mic nights. Fast forward through two bands and 17 years of work – in 2015, the newly formed Nathaniel Rateliff
12
TONIGHT’S MUSIC
& the Night Sweats released their self-titled debut, which became a massive hit. In the years since, Rateliff and his band did hundreds of shows in North America, England, Ireland, and Australia, and they played Coachella, Farm Aid, Newport Folk Festival, and the Monterey Pop Festival’s 50th Anniversary. Nathaniel went on to release one more album with the Night Sweats before taking a more introspective, solo turn on his most recent release, “And It’s Still Alright”. A departure from the bigger-than-life sound of the Night Sweats, “And It’s Still Alright” reflects a return to Rateliff’s roots. “I think I always want to see hope in the darkness, and I like to try to share that,” Rateliff says simply. We’re thrilled to have Nathaniel performing songs from his new album tonight as a very special part of Gala Remixed.
