WHO WE ARE Since 1891, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) has provided high-quality, community-based youth development services to at-risk youth in San Francisco. Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. Our Clubs are located in neighborhoods with the fewest resources for youth, and we are open when youth need us the most—after school and all day during the summer. In 2021, we also provided full-day programming when schools were closed, helping youth to access their school’s remote learning. We impact the lives of Club members, primarily ages six to 18, by focusing on academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character and community engagement, and job readiness with earning potential. Our Formula for Impact is based on running targeted programs in these areas and ensuring regular attendance and an optimal experience in our Clubs. Learn more at kidsclub.org/about
MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP As we work through what is hopefully the final chapter of the pandemic, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco is putting strategies and resources in place to help support young people and families for years to come. The impact of COVID-19 has caused us to double down on some priorities, while rethinking others. In this report, we will share how our pandemic learning shaped and strengthened our organization, and how we expect that to continue well into the future. Lasting impressions are formed about people during tough times. Our respect and appreciation for BGCSF’s staff at all levels could not be higher. We are also grateful for the way in which our Board Members, Trustees, corporate partners, government partners, individual donors, and volunteers stepped up to the challenges before them and committed themselves to the success of the Club both during the crisis and for years to come. Together, we have successfully navigated through a myriad of challenges and prepared ourselves for the work ahead.
Brandon Boze
Remarkably, we expanded our reach during the pandemic. Despite all the challenges we were facing, we added a new location in February 2021 — a School-Based Club on the top of Hunters Point Hill. As well, we are set to break ground on a new state-of-the-art Clubhouse in the Sunnydale community, San Francisco’s largest public housing complex. We will quadruple the number of youth we serve each day at the new Club. This new Clubhouse is being developed in partnership with Mercy Housing who is taking over management of this housing development. In the coming year, you will see us focus first on mitigating learning loss while promoting stronger connections between youth, schools, and expanded learning outcomes, as well as on the socioemotional health and wellbeing of our members. Accordingly, the Board approved an investment in these areas by adding 11 new positions. You will also see us advance efforts in job readiness, youth voice, the arts, and sports, fitness, and play. We recognize that each of these areas has a role to play in our members’ success in life, and their short and long-term joy.
Rob Connolly
Youth, families, staff, Board Members, Trustees, partners, and donors — every one of you plays an important role in our community. The pandemic has reminded us over and over that relationships are essential to our success. We are grateful to everyone who commits themselves to the success of Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco and the young people we serve each day! Sincerely,
Brandon Boze Board Chair

BGCSF CLUB MEMBER NAMED 2021 CALIFORNIA YOUTH OF THE YEAR! On February 4, 2021, we held the 13th Annual Charles Schwab Youth of the Year Celebration and proudly awarded the 2021 Citywide Youth of the Year title to Deejay, a three-year member of BGCSF’s Gateway High School Club. Deejay continued to advance in the national competition and was ultimately named the California Youth of the Year, representing Boys & Girls Clubs across the state. Deejay credits supportive and caring Club staff, and his involvement with a teen leadership program, career exposure events, and a retreat to BGCSF’s Camp Mendocino as key aspects of his fulfilling Boys & Girls Clubs experience. As one of BGCSF’s School-Based Clubs, the Gateway High School Club provides one-onone mentoring, enrichment programs, and more to help students achieve success in the classroom and beyond. Over 1,000 guests celebrated the achievements of Deejay and nine other Citywide Youth of the Year finalists. The virtual event was the culmination of a four-month, intense leadership development program that involved public speaking, one-on-one mentorship, essay writing, and team building. This class represented the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the youth we serve annually. Combined, they had a tenure of nearly 80 years as Club members. Despite the significant challenges of navigating a global pandemic, their courage, resilience, and tenacity allowed them to grow into confident leaders, mentors, and change agents for their communities.
“ I was a kid who was scared to take risks and try new things. The Club taught me to take initiative. In order to be the most powerful version of myself, I learned I have to be willing to put in hard work and dedication.” — DEEJAY, CITYWIDE YOUTH OF THE YEAR AND CALIFORNIA YOUTH OF THE YEAR. CURRENT FRESHMAN AT TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
Program Highlight:
Youth Voice
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco is fully committed to supporting youth as they learn to share their unique perspectives and develop their leadership skills. The Club prioritizes facilitating opportunities for youth to connect with issues they are passionate about and create change in the community.
PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: CHARLES SCHWAB & CO.
For BGCSF and Charles Schwab & Co., communities matter. Schwab provides support in multiple ways: volunteers, financial support, and Board representation. They have been the Presenting Sponsor of BGCSF’s Youth of the Year Celebration for 14 consecutive years, supporting extraordinary teens as they reach for their dreams and achieve great futures. Financial literacy for our young members is also a priority. “Our goal is to bring financial education to everyone, because to me, knowing how to manage money wisely is a way for people to make their dreams come true.” Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, President, Charles Schwab Foundation.

INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES AND YOUTH EMPOWERMENT Promoting safe and supportive environments for all youth is at the heart of the work we do and what we stand for as an organization. The Club is a place for youth to socialize, build community, and find independence. It’s a positive and supportive environment where youth are encouraged to articulate their own unique perspectives on the world, to discuss their feelings, and to challenge commonly-held perspectives that don’t feel right.
“ I joined the Genders and Sexualities Alliance program and believe it is important because it provides a safe space for LGBTQ youth and allies to be themselves and share their common interests without being judged.” — PAULINA, A 13-YEAR TENDERLOIN CLUBHOUSE MEMBER
“ Community and friends kept me coming back to the Club. It helps me to know that other people are going through the same thing I am and that I am not alone.” — KRISABELLE, A 10-YEAR EXCELSIOR CLUBHOUSE MEMBER

In 2021, we launched the Identity & Pride fellowship, funded by the California Arts Council and inspired by our Identity & Pride exhibit in 2019 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. This fellowship has provided a safe and inclusive place for our LGBTQ youth and allies to reflect on identity and explore creative arts as a tool for expression and belonging. This partnership culminated in a teen-led virtual art show in celebration of Pride month. This year has been an especially challenging time to be a kid. As San Francisco schools returned to in-person learning in the fall, we asked members of the teen community at our Excelsior Clubhouse to talk about their experiences during the pandemic, why they continued to come to the Club every day, and their thoughts about the future.
Watch the full panel here.
In a teen-led panel, members spoke out about the importance of having a space to interact with their peers and talk about their feelings. They discussed the importance of community and support during a time when they felt increased isolation, anxiety, and socioemotional distress.
PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: KIMBALL FOUNDATION
The Kimball Foundation is a community leader and an aligned partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco. The Kimball Foundation shares two priorities with BGCSF: creating viable pathways to college access and workplace success for youth who face significant obstacles to accessing employment with high-earning potential.

COVID-19: A VISUAL OVERVIEW A Through immense staff dedication, intricate planning, and some complicated protocols, our Clubhouse doors have stayed open throughout the various twists and turns of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, BGCSF strictly adhered to City and County of San Francisco COVID-19 health guidelines for youth services, while pushing ourselves to do as much as we possibly could to support youth and families. Review last year’s timeline for the details behind BGCSF’s role as an essential business throughout the first year of the pandemic.
A NEW YEAR In 2021, our focus shifted toward recovery. We committed that every program or service in the near future would have these stated purposes: mitigating learning loss/strengthening school connections and supporting the socioemotional health of our youth.
AUGUST 2020 First Day of School and the Community Hubs Initiative We opened our doors for the first day of school, serving our most vulnerable youth in-person and hundreds more virtually across our Clubhouses. A month later, 10 of our Clubhouses joined the City’s Community Hubs Initiative.
From March 2020 to April 2021, San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) closed its buildings and offered instruction remotely. BGCSF was proud to be a major part of DCYF’s Community Hubs Initiative. This coalition included 119 organizations: San Francisco City departments, community-based organizations, philanthropy, and businesses. This partnership supported 2,509 of the city’s most vulnerable children, helping them access their school’s remote instruction as well as providing recreation and peer interactions.

FEBRUARY 2021: A NEW CLUB LOCATION! Despite the pandemic challenges, February 2021, BGCSF opened a new location at Malcolm X Academy, a K-5 school on Hunters Point Hill. This location is our third in Bayview Hunters Point and our second Beacon contract (for more details on this expansion, turn to page 10).
AND TIMELINE SPRING 2021 Supporting Mental Health As we focused on supporting the mental health of youth, our Board of Governors committed to making socioemotional health an even bigger priority, with significant new funding to expand our Behavioral Health Services team. Despite pandemicrelated challenges, we worked closely with our teens to make sure they had the support they needed.
96% of seniors graduated from high school. 94% of seniors who participated in College Prep are college bound. We linked our youth to more than $267,000 in college scholarships. 218 teens were connected to jobs through the Club.
BACK TO SCHOOL 2021 As SFUSD reopened, BGCSF played a critical role in mitigating pandemic learning loss and supporting our members’ academic success. We created a new Education Liaison position at each Clubhouse. Our Education Liaisons track individual members’ academic progress and maintain contact with school administrators, teachers, and parents/caregivers.
SUMMER 2021 San Francisco: Our Citywide Education team ran a successful, intensive summer literacy program across all Clubhouses with the goal of mitigating pandemic-related learning loss. 950 youth participated.
Camp Mendocino: We reopened Camp Mendocino in the summer of 2021 to a limited number of youth and with very strict COVID-19 protocols in place.
LOOKING AHEAD COVID-19 has made it clear that there is a high degree of connectivity between a young person’s socioemotional health and their ability to excel academically. Our robust Education team will continue to work closely with our Behavioral Health Specialists to ensure all the adults in the child’s life are paying attention to their holistic needs. Providing this comprehensive support network for our kids strengthens our alignment with schools, which ultimately creates more meaningful Club-to-school and Club-to-family connections that will sustain our youth well into the future.

A SUMMER OF PARTNERSHIPS Summer Together!
VaccinateAll58
Over the summer, BGCSF joined the Summer Together program, a San Francisco Department of Children Youth and Their Families (DCYF) coalition of nonprofits, businesses, and city departments offering free learning experiences for SFUSD students in summer 2021.
As an official partner of VaccinateAll58 (California Department of Public Health’s campaign for a safe, fair, and equitable vaccine for all 58 counties in the state), BGCSF launched a summer social-media campaign focused on endorsing COVID-19 vaccination in youth ages 12-18 in advance of a return to in-person school.
Prioritizing families in highest need for early registration, Summer Together opened registration early to residents of public housing, families that were experiencing homelessness, English-language learners, and low-income families, with a focus on historically impacted communities. This engagement aligned with our organization’s commitment to operating in neighborhoods where the greatest need exists and to be open when kids need us most — after school, on some school holidays, and all day during the summer. We were delighted to be a part of such a committed and collaborative citywide partnership!
Our organization enthusiastically advocates for the COVID-19 vaccinations for everyone who is eligible and who is able. We support the data identifying it as one of the most important ways that our community can get beyond this pandemic and return to a true sense of normalcy, something we know is critical for our kids, their families, and their communities. Participation extended across the organization. Senior leadership, Clubhouse staff, and teen members shared their stories and the reasons behind their decision to get vaccinated.
PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: THE SAN FRANCISCO DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN, YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES (DCYF)
DCYF partners with BGCSF to help our city’s youth “lead lives full of opportunity and happiness.” With funds for after school programs, summer and school break programs, teen programs, and case management, DCYF remains our largest funder. DCYF is the arm within city government focused exclusively on ensuring that San Francisco’s young people become healthy, productive, and valued community members. PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: CRANKSTART
Crankstart is a family foundation, based here in San Francisco, that addresses social issues and their underlying causes. Like BGCSF, Crankstart believes that children deserve an education that prepares them for college, a career and a better life. Thank you, Crankstart, for investing in our critically important education hubs during the pandemic.

CAMP MENDOCINO REOPENS! In June, Camp Mendocino opened its doors to campers for the first time since 2019 providing youth with the opportunity to enjoy a much-needed break from city life. Sitting on nearly 2,000 wooded acres, the magical setting allows campers to connect with nature and with each other — away from technology and other daily distractions. After a year that has dramatically increased young people’s feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety, the Camp experience was more important than ever.

CAMPERS ATTENDED FOR EITHER A 10-DAY OR 11-DAY SESSION, WITH STRICT COVID-19 PROTOCOLS IN PLACE
TEENS PARTICIPATED IN CAMP’S COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM DESIGNED TO PROVIDE YOUTH WITH JOB READINESS OPPORTUNITIES AND TO BUILD LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SKILLS
Camp Mendocino looked a little different this year as staff made adjustments to follow all CDC and county health guidelines to keep members and staff healthy and safe. Camp operated at a limited capacity, wearing masks was mandated, and interaction between different groups was limited. Through close adherence to these protocols, as well as pre-departure and onsite testing, Camp was able to remain open for every session without any COVID-19 exposures.
“ When I heard we had the opportunity to come to Camp this year, I was ecstatic. I was happy to see friends and meet new people.” — KELLY, FORMER CAMPER AND CURRENT PARTICIPANT IN CAMP’S LEADER IN TRAINING PROGRAM
“ It was such a joy to feel the spirit of Camp return. Seeing our campers’ huge smiles as they sit around the campfire, try an activity for the first time, or bond with a new friend, fills me with so much hope for our post-pandemic world.” — SARA RICHARDSON, CAMP DIRECTOR
PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: THE GUARDSMEN
Since 1947, The Guardsmen, an all-volunteer group of Bay Area men committed to improving young lives through access to high-quality outdoor activities for innercity youth, has been an essential partner to BGCSF. The Guardsmen’s campership program sends hundreds of young people, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to Camp Mendocino each summer. Please support The Guardsmen’s Christmas Tree Lot at Fort Mason, the Big Game Lunch, the SF Wine Auction, the Sports Auction, and more. Support for the Guardsmen means support for BGCSF!

CONTINUED GROWTH IN THE MIDST OF UNCERTAINTY “I have served BGCSF for several years, including in the Bayview Hunters Point community. It is exciting that our organization is able to expand here. I believe all youth in the neighborhood deserve access to these incredible resources.” — SARA REYNA, SITE DIRECTOR, BGCSF BEACON AT MALCOLM X ACADEMY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Quadrupling Our Impact in Sunnydale BGCSF is also excited about the opportunity to expand our services and reach more youth in the Sunnydale community, where we have held a consistent presence for over 30 years. Sunnydale is a vibrant and close-knit neighborhood. But as the City’s largest public housing community, Sunnydale has also been burdened by many challenges including high unemployment, significant poverty, violent crime, and high rates of incarceration.
A New Club Opens Despite the challenges of the year, we have been fortunate to experience sustained and important growth. In February, BGCSF was awarded the Beacon contract for Malcolm X Academy, a K-5 school on Hunters Point Hill. This School-Based Club is our third site serving the Bayview Hunters Point community and is open to all kids for afterschool programming. The school currently enrolls approximately 100 K-5 students, and the Club serves all the students during the school day as well as 35 students after school. Kids can choose between a range of programs and activities. Tutoring, literacy support, and homework help are focus points, and a Behavioral Health Specialist works with all staff to integrate wellness and check-ins into daily routines. 10
Right now, a historic transformation is underway. Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco is engaging with partners (Mercy Housing, Wu Yee, SF Rec & Park (RPD), Related Builders) to build a brand new community HUB for the neighborhood that will include a state-of-the art Boys & Girls Club. This new, much larger Clubhouse will allow us to more than quadruple our reach by serving 135 youth daily and 1,000 youth annually. We are carefully designing each space to be inspiring, age-appropriate, safe, and physically accessible for all kids. Beyond the Clubhouse itself, youth will be able to engage in supervised activities that take place in a new RPD gym and the existing Coffman Pool and athletic field. Our Sunnydale members deserve nothing less than world-class state-of-the art facilities to enrich their afterschool experiences.
A UNIFIED COMMITMENT TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SAFETY
Like many organizations over the past two years, we at BGCSF have become acutely aware that priorities shift and goals evolve out of circumstances beyond our control. The twists and turns of the pandemic have made it clear that we must remain nimble and adaptable. At the same time, the COVID-19 experience has also crystalized that certain core values should never change — no matter what. BGCSF’s commitment to the safety and well-being of every child in our care is one such value. As we move beyond the pandemic, we are optimistic that we will be able to bring back more and more activities, programs, experiences, and partnerships. We look forward to resuming field trips, increasing access to more sports and other enrichment activities, welcoming more kids to Camp Mendocino, and the return of parents and volunteers to our Clubhouses. We know that these additional opportunities come with increased responsibility. The health and safety of
our youth and staff are always at the forefront of all our decision making, and we are ready for what the future will bring. While we are proud of our outstanding reputation for being a safe and positive place for youth to learn, grow, and succeed, we know this reputation is only as strong as our ability to back it up every day. Our dedication to safety extends across all levels of our organization. From our direct service staff to our eight person Board Safety Committee, to our programmatic and leadership teams, we are unified in a cohesive approach. We also benefit from the support of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Child & Club Safety Department. These comprehensive layers of support allow us to plan for the future in the most responsible way possible. Learn more about our robust safety processes and protocols
PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: THE MAYOR’S OFFICE OF HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
The Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development’s (MOHCD) mission is to partner with the community to strengthen the social, physical and economic infrastructure of San Francisco’s low-income neighborhoods and communities in need. With capital investments from MOHCD, BGCSF is able to make critical improvements to our Club facilities, making them safe and inviting for youth today and well into the future

An Integrated Approach to Mitigating Learning Loss and Strengthening the Socioemotional Health of Youth
BGCSF has been a leader in the socioemotional health space for decades. Behavioral Health Services (BHS) is an essential component of our holistic approach to youth development. We know that youth will need increased mental health support to emerge from the pandemic strong, resilient, and optimistic. To address this, we have committed to making socioemotional health an even bigger priority across all Clubs, with significant new funding to expand our BHS team. Behavioral Health Specialists work at individual Clubhouses. They support BGCSF’s commitment to cultivating caring and supportive communities by: »
Prioritizing wellness activities, regular mental health check-ins, and early interventions
“I grew up as a member at Columbia Park Clubhouse. It is an honor for me to support kids from similar backgrounds to mine. I chose to pursue this field because I wanted to grow with Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco and found it inspiring that supporting kids’ socioemotional health is such a big priority for the organization.” — PATTY CARTAGENA, BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SPECIALIST, GREATER VISITACION VALLEY CLUBHOUSE

“ A child’s ability to perform academically is directly linked to their mental health. It is really hard for a student to perform well in school when they are overwhelmed and don’t know how to deal with that stress — it makes it hard to focus, to comprehend and retain, to apply anything they’re learning.” — ANN ARORA, MEMBER OF THE CLUB’S BOARD OF GOVERNORS AND A SAN FRANCISCO-BASED PSYCHOTHERAPIST
In addition to increasing the number of Behavioral Health Specialists, we have added additional Education positions to support youth who will be recovering from the pandemic for an extended period. Our Clubhouses now have Education Liaisons, who are in regular communication with schools, families, and Club staff, to ensure each student stays on track. When problems do arise, they are there to pull in staff, tutors, and other resources to help our youth succeed. Education Liaisons work closely with our Education Directors who run our learning centers, develop academic programs, and supervise groups of kids. Our Education and Behavioral Health teams work together to ensure all the adults in a child’s life are keenly aware of the young person’s current needs and provide the resources necessary for their success.

BGCSF SPOTLIGHTS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Sabrina McFarland
In her 2019 National Youth of the Year speech, Sabrina shared, “no matter how far life will take me, I know that I will always find my way back to the Club.”
University in New York, we are not surprised that this prediction holds true. Not only is Sabrina still closely connected to staff and youth from the Visitacion Valley Clubhouse and our main office, she shares that her experiences as a Club kid and journey throughout the Youth of the Year program continue to support her every day:
As Sabrina enters the second semester of her junior year at Barnard College of Columbia

This timing has given Devin a unique perspective, “Through our collaboration with families and schools during COVID-19, I have seen firsthand how BGCSF’s integrated approach is vitally important to the long-term health and wellbeing of all Club kids. Our staff work closely with one another, with schools, and with families to provide a true ecosystem of support for our communities. I am very proud to be part of this network.” Devin emphasizes that relationships and investing in partnerships has
Before joining the Club, Devin worked as an AmeriCorps member and then as management staff at City Year in East San Jose. In this role, he worked closely with schools and teachers to improve educational and socioemotional outcomes. His youth work led him to formal training in Restorative Practices and DEI consulting. He is an alumnus of the New Leaders Council Fellowship and the Boy Scouts of America, where he received the Eagle Scout award. Devin currently sits on BGCSF’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion staff committee and will play an instrumental role in this work as we move forward.
I credit my Club and Youth of the Year experience for making me profoundly secure in my identity and for helping me to stand up for my beliefs. It makes me proud to support other students who may not have been given the same tools to speak up for themselves.” Sabrina is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Arts, majoring in Education with a concentration in Educational Policy and a minor
Lysabel Fabian (Lysa) Assistant Clubhouse Director Tenderloin Clubhouse
Inspiring youth to pursue learning and advance their education is one of Lysa’s core passions. After graduating from San Francisco State University with a BS in Child and Adolescent Development and earning her teaching credentials in Special Education and General Education, Lysa entered SFUSD as a classroom teacher.
in American Studies. She serves as President of BOSS (Barnard’s Organization of Soul & Solidarity), a student organization dedicated to celebrating black womanhood and fostering fellowship among women of color. Sabrina also participates in advocacy for several campus groups including Trans@ Barnard — a resource for navigating Barnard while transmasculine, transfeminine, nonbinary, and/or gender-nonconforming.
Sabrina also has a passion for continuing to inspire the next generation of leaders at Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco. Throughout a recent semester, she provided one-on-one literacy tutoring to kids from her Clubhouse through virtual distance learning while in New York. “It felt great to continue to show up as a mentor, scholar, and friend for the kids from my community. Staying connected to Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco is something I will always prioritize.”
Although she enjoyed the role, Lysa has always gravitated towards pursuits that enable her to support her local community. As a proud third-generation San Franciscan, Lysa wanted to find an opportunity that allowed her to pursue her passion in education and support the city where she has so much personal connection. Working for BGCSF’s Tenderloin Clubhouse for the past decade has allowed her to do just that.
Now as the Assistant Clubhouse Director, Lysa has oversight over a wider scope of Club operations and staff. “This new perspective has really allowed me to see the interconnection between our various staff roles and departments. I love having the ability to directly support the range of staff talents. We are constantly working together in a like-minded approach, asking what can we do together? How can we take our individual specializations and make the most impact for our kids?”
Lysa spent almost 10 years as the Education Director at the Tenderloin Clubhouse where she supported hundreds of youth and families in academics, socioemotional health, and creative programming. “I loved this role because I was able to support youth throughout their school journey and then see them return with their high school diplomas and college degrees.”
Lysa loves the closeness Tenderloin Club staff feel toward the families they serve. “Our Clubhouse is located in the same residential building where many of our families live. We are truly part of their daily lives and routines. I feel honored to have that greater connection to the community.”

VOLUNTEERS Our volunteers have always been a critical resource to the Club. While in person volunteering was largely put on hold for the past two years, The Purple Kumquats, a dedicated group of volunteers continued to support Camp operations and advanced many capital projects during the pandemic. As well, many volunteers showed up virtually to support the Club’s work whenever they were needed. When possible and when health mandates allowed for limited in-person gathering, our volunteers met safely in the outdoors or among their own cohort to give their time to improving our facilities.
As we emerge from the pandemic and look forward to a return to some normalcy, we are excited to re-launch our in-person volunteer program — always with a mindset of ensuring that the health and safety of our youth, staff, and volunteers remain a top priority.
To learn more about our volunteer program, please visit www.kidsclub.org/volunteer or email Sam Stone, Volunteer & Corporate Community Outreach Manager at sstone@kidsclub.org.

EVENTS IN 2021 Although the challenges of 2021 limited our ability to have in-person events, we continued to host very successful virtual and hybrid events, and even an outdoor in-person event – the 47th Annual Golf Tournament. Through these events, our incredible community of individual donors, corporate partners, and institutional funders contributed more than $1.8M, allowing us to keep our doors open and to continue serving youth every day, even through the darkest periods.
Youth of the Year Our Youth of the Year Virtual Celebration brought all our Clubhouses together in a joyful online experience honoring ten Youth of the Year finalists. Over 1,000 guests viewed the event, with many reminiscing about the 2019 luncheon, the last major event that most people attended before the pandemic.
Annual Gala Our September in-person Annual Gala was canceled due to the Delta variant surge, but we were still able to come together in a hybrid event format. The Gala-at-Home event celebrated the resiliency, determination, and adaptability of the organization over the past year and was viewed by more than 650 supporters. We even hosted two small dinner parties at Clubhouses. Watch our 2021 video | Celebrating Resiliency, Determination, and Adaptability
47th Annual Golf Tournament at the Olympic Club We were excited to welcome everyone back to the 47th Annual Golf Tournament in June. Nearly 180 golfers enjoyed playing on all three courses. An in-person and online auction were part of this fun event.

SAN FRANCISCO COMPANIES GIVE BACK The Golden State Warriors have been outstanding partners with BGCSF since 2011, making significant investments in the development of Bay Area youth. From Hoops4Kids, generous game-day tickets, unique opportunities for our youth to meet players, Board representation, and event sponsorship, the Warriors are always thinking of how the franchise can best drive positive changes in the community.
McKinsey & Company has supported BGCSF consistently since 2011. Their employees are deeply committed to the youth of San Francisco and have engaged with the Club on many levels, from in-Club volunteering to leadership on the Board of Governors. This year, McKinsey participated in meaningful virtual volunteer events, proving to be flexible and impactful partners as we navigated the ongoing pandemic. We are grateful to McKinsey & Co. for the many ways they support the Clubs.
Dodge & Cox has been a lead corporate partner for BGCSF since 1998. The firm not only contributes generous financial gifts each year, they also are a key partner in our annual backpack give-away event, donating more than 200 backpacks each year. Their employees have contributed their time and talents as skill-based volunteers, serving on the NextGen Council, and our Board of Governors. Dodge & Cox’s deep engagement ensures BGCSF’s ability to deliver critical programs and services to the youth we serve.
Hudson Pacific Properties (HPP) has been a valued partner since 2011. We are especially proud to showcase HPP’s support as the Presenting Sponsor at our Golf Tournament and are grateful that HPP continued to support us generously through the pandemic (and the move to virtual events). In addition to financial sponsorship, HPP employees have contributed meaningful in-kind gifts to our Clubhouses, including pumpkins for Halloween and gifts during the holiday season. HPP continues to be an incredible partner, always thinking of ways to make our Clubs a festive and positive place for our members.

United Airlines has been BGCSF’s official airline and a proud partner since 2009. They have consistently provided financial support as well as in-kind travel to ensure our staff and youth can access important conferences and leadership opportunities across the country. United also provides our teen members an incredible opportunity to apply for exclusive, paid-internships during the summers at SFO. During the pandemic, while their industry was being hit hard and the company had to make difficult financial decisions, United continued to provide donations, in-kind travel, and career opportunities, prioritizing their support for youth and the San Francisco community.

Old Navy has been a longtime partner of the Clubs and one that is incredibly consistent and dependable. While Old Navy has provided generous financial support to the Clubs, their contributions to our youth through workforce development opportunities and in-kind donations of clothing and supplies are just as important. This support ensures our youth and families have the resources and opportunities they need for immediate and long-term success.
PwC has supported BGCSF since 2000. During the pandemic, PwC found incredibly impactful ways for their employees to stay engaged, providing meaningful support to our Teen Services programs by participating in virtual career exposures, college essay writing, mock interviews, and more. The firm also significantly increased their financial contribution during a time that the Club needed it the most. From leadership on our Board of Governors, to deep engagement on our NextGen Council, to multiple employee volunteers, we can always depend on PwC to support the Clubs in the most impactful ways.

In 2004, shortly after returning to San Francisco to head an independent elementary school, Lucinda Lee Katz attended a Youth of the Year luncheon. “I was completely taken over by the young people’s stories and how closely they paralleled my own upbringing,” says Lucinda. “As the youth described the transformative impact BGCSF had on their lives, I thought back on my own upbringing in San Francisco’s Chinatown. There, I attended a community center with programs that mirrored those offered by BGCSF. That experience changed the trajectory of my life.”
DONOR SPOTLIGHT:
Lucinda Lee Katz Years of Experience Inform Legacy Commitment
“For me, as a native San Franciscan, I made an unrestricted legacy gift so this work and programming endures for the next generation. It comes from my heart and demonstrates the support the organization deserves.”
In addition to this lived experience, Lucinda is a nationally recognized educator who’s worked with young people for decades. At the outset of the pandemic as schools closed their doors, BGCSF pivoted to meet the needs of vulnerable youth, including those of essential workers and their children. The Club changed from an afterschool program to a school-day program, supporting distance learning, while providing supplemental education services, wellness and mental health services, recreation, and daily breakfast and lunch. “Few organizations could shift so quickly and efficiently,” says Katz. “It’s evidence of a very strong organization.”
