OCTOBER 2021–SEPTEMBER 2022
2022 ANNUAL REPORT
WHO WE SERVE
WHO WE ARE
Since 1891, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) has provided high-quality, community-based youth development services to youth in San Francisco. Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.
Our Clubs are located in neighborhoods with the fewest resources for youth, and we are open when youth need us the most — after school, on most school holidays, and all day during the summer.
We impact the lives of Club members, primarily ages six to 18, by focusing on academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character and community engagement, and job readiness with earning potential. Our Formula for Impact is based on running targeted programs in these areas and ensuring regular attendance and an optimal experience in our Clubs.

MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP
Thank you for making time to review our Annual Report. We are proud of the impressive work that Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) did this year to support youth, families, and local communities.
It was another challenging year — especially the first half — but our team pushed through the many obstacles that COVID continued to present and put the best interests of kids first in all our decisions. We closed the year with great optimism for the future, knowing that BGCSF will continue to meet the moment as a critical service provider and answer the call of kids, families, and city leaders.
This year, we focused our efforts primarily on academic success and socioemotional health and wellness. This decision has been well received by all our constituents. As the full impact of the pandemic comes into focus over time, we will continue to invest in these critical areas of support.
BGCSF continued to set a strong example for the nonprofit sector as we pushed beyond the pandemic. Our Youth of the Year event in February 2022 was one of the first large, in-person nonprofit events; our school year program was robust; and last summer, we brought back all the engaging activities and experiences that should be part of childhood, including our swim program, sports leagues, creative arts, and field trips. Camp Mendocino also returned to full operations, much to the delight of all our campers!
This year, we advanced our Board and staff commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). We are committed to fostering a culture where staff, youth, and volunteers feel free from explicit and implicit bias, prejudice, and discrimination. We advance this work through a Board Task Force and a Staff Steering Committee. Learn more about our DEIB work on page 10.
Sincerely,
Brandon Boze Board Chair

CONTINUED FOCUS ON MITIGATING LEARNING LOSS AND SUPPORTING SOCIOEMOTIONAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS
As part of our courageous and immediate response to supporting youth and families at every stage of the pandemic, we made significant investments in education and mental health services in 2020. Over the past two years, we have witnessed the impact of these increased resources and are pleased to share an update.
In 2022, the newly created Education Liaison position was filled across our Clubs. Education Liaisons are now in regular communication with teachers, families, and Club staff, to ensure that the adults are working together to help individual youth succeed academically. Throughout the year, our Education Team works closely with our seasoned and growing team of Behavioral Health Specialists. In addition to supporting youth, our Behavioral Health Specialists meet with staff to provide coaching and discuss successes and challenges.
This has created a holistic support system where all the adults in our members’ lives are on the same page. Providing this comprehensive support network has deepened our connections with families, strengthened our alignment with schools, and will sustain our youth well into the future.

PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: THE EUCALYPTUS FOUNDATION
Luna is a second-grade student who started the school year unable to read. She is an English Language Learner with monolingual, Spanish-speaking parents. Our bilingual Education Liaison at the Excelsior Clubhouse, Erika, attended Luna’s parent-teacher conferences and worked with the adults in her life to develop an individualized academic support plan. Luna now reads and writes at grade level, and most importantly, she is always enthusiastic about learning more!

A FOCUS ON HOPE, JOY, AND OPTIMISM
Clearly, young people have been through way too much over the last two and a half years, and in response, BGCSF has been determined to prioritize a return to childhood joy for all Club members!
As always, our Clubhouses adhered to the current City and County COVID health guidelines, but we were also excited to be pushing forward to a bright future. Our commitment to standing shoulder to shoulder with our families is at the heart of our work and we were dedicated to supporting and encouraging their transition back to normalcy.
BGCSF brought back more and more activities, programs, experiences, and partnerships. We were thrilled to be resuming field trips, increasing access to sports leagues and other enrichment activities, and welcomed kids back to our Aquatics Center at the Don Fisher Clubhouse.

We share their “deep commitment to advancing equity and healing trauma” as they “bring together government agencies, schools, and community-based organizations to strengthen our communities to lead full lives of opportunity and happiness”. DCYF also invests in the professional development of our staff, providing program observations and youth surveys to ensure we are delivering the highest-quality programming possible to our young people. Thank you DCYF for being a meaningful partner.

BGCSF CLUB MEMBER NAMED 2022 NORTHERN CALIFORNIA YOUTH OF THE YEAR
On February 17, we held the 14th Annual Charles Schwab Youth of the Year Celebration and proudly awarded the 2022 Citywide Youth of the Year title to Paulino, an 11-year member of BGCSF’s Tenderloin Clubhouse. Paulino continued to advance in the National competition and was ultimately a finalist for the California Youth of the Year.
Paulino credited supportive and caring staff, and their involvement with teen leadership programs, the visual arts, and Camp Mendocino as key aspects of their fulfilling Club experience. An outstanding academic student, Paulino graduated from Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory High School and now attends Colgate College on a four-year scholarship.
450 guests joined in-person for the 14th Annual Charles Schwab Youth of the Year Celebration at Chase Center. 800 people joined us virtually for the live stream. The event was the culmination of a four-month, intense leadership development program that involved public speaking, one-on-one mentorship, essay writing, and team building.
Our 2022 Youth of the Year finalists showed an incredible drive to succeed, dedication to their community, and passion for their Clubhouse or Camp. We are so proud of each finalists’ perseverance, strength, determination, and confidence.
“
The Club has reassured me that the person I am at this very moment is the person that I am meant to be. I learned from my mentors that I do not have to change or have self-doubts about my identity. The Club appreciates and embraces the genuine me unconditionally.”
Charles Schwab & Co. has been the Presenting Sponsor of BGCSF’s Youth of the Year Celebration for 14 consecutive years, supporting outstanding teens who have exceptional leadership skills, academic achievements, and service to Club and community. Volunteering at Clubs, Money Matters grants, Board representation, and financial literacy curricula are other ways Schwab employees give their time, talent, and resources. Schwab prides itself on having a “spirit of service”. BGCSF thanks them for their community-minded approach to business.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Throughout the year, Club members of all ages participate in community service and leadership programs that build their skills while teaching them that they have the power to positively bring about change in their community. With guidance from our skilled and caring staff and access to unique and age-appropriate opportunities, BGCSF helps youth map out life goals, gain perspective on problems with which they struggle, and develop their professionalism.
The Teen Advocacy Group (TAG) is a program for our Greater Visitacion Valley teens to explore social issues that are important to them with the ultimate goal of building an advocacy platform around an issue of their choice.

“ Club staff and volunteers participate in mock interviews with our teens. This is one of the ways in which we provide our teens with the knowledge and experience needed to make positive choices about their futures.”
For our middle school and high school teens, career exposures provide unique opportunities to see workplaces in action by visiting local companies and community-based organizations. Through experiences like this, our young people build connections, discover what interests them, and learn what is necessary to set themselves up for college or other learning opportunities beyond high school.

We value the partnership with The Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD) whose mission is to partner with the community to strengthen the social, physical, and economic infrastructure of San Francisco’s neighborhoods in need. MOHCD provided program grants for community and teen leadership programs in Sunnydale and capital investments for critical improvements to our Club facilities. Thank you to the staff team at MOHCD for your collaboration and advocacy!

STEADY AND CONTINUED GROWTH
A NEW CLUBHOUSE FOR OUR SUNNYDALE COMMUNITY
Over the summer, State Senator Scott Wiener, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, and District 10 Supervisor and Board President Shamann Walton came to Sunnydale to announce significant government funding to complete the Sunnydale Hub — future home of our new Boys & Girls Club, Wu Yee Children’s Services, community space, and a San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department gym.
This new and expanded Clubhouse will allow us to more than triple our impact in Sunnydale by serving 135 youth daily. We carefully designed each space to be safe, inspiring, age-appropriate, and physically accessible for all kids. As part of the larger community center, our programming capabilities will expand so youth can engage in supervised activities that take place in a new gym, pool, and athletic field.
A NEW SCHOOL-BASED CLUB
This fall, we added our sixth School-Based Club — our Mission Preparatory School Club in the Mission. As the name suggests, School-Based Clubs are our Clubs located on school properties. In most cases, they develop in schools where we already have an established relationship and where we are serving students nearby at one of our eight traditional Clubhouses.
In addition to the high-quality afterschool programming found at our traditional locations, School-Based Clubs also provide support to students and teachers during the school day and are embedded in the overall framework of the school community.
All members at our School-Based Clubs have daily access to first-class facilities of their neighboring traditional Clubhouses as well as the significant resources and a range of programming that a BGCSF membership provides.

CAMP MENDOCINO
For over 90 years, Camp Mendocino has provided the space and facilities for kids to have fun, try new things, create lifelong friendships, and experience a new level of independence. Camp’s magical setting among the redwoods allows campers to connect with nature — and with each other, away from the many distractions and stresses of the Bay Area.
After the challenges of the past two years, we were thrilled to bring more campers back to experience the transformative impact of Camp Mendocino. Campers enjoyed returning to much-loved camp activities including bike rides, boating, gardening, and the ropes courses. All these activities are led by welltrained specialists who infuse the curriculum with their own enthusiasm and positivity.
Beyond summer sessions, Camp offers programming and supports youth at other times of the year. Camp is open for retreats and school trips, allowing us to extend our reach and connect even more youth with our leadership, outdoor education and environmental awareness programming.
This spring, we decided to transform Camp Mendocino into a college campus. 35 teens went to Camp with BGCSF staff members and gained a taste of what it’s like to live and learn away from home. They participated in college-themed workshops, learned about residential campus living, and enjoyed fun peer-to-peer interactions.

Since 1947, The Guardsmen, an all-volunteer group of Bay Area men committed to improving young lives through access to high-quality outdoor activities, has been a partner to BGCSF! Their campership program provides scholarships for hundreds of our Club members to attend Camp Mendocino each summer. Support for the Guardsmen means support for Camp Mendocino!
The American Camp Association (ACA) and Camp Mendocino are in an expanding partnership. ACA supported Camp with a Leadership Pathways grant for our Counselors in Training program and also provided a Camp-School Partnership grant to send Gateway Middle School 7th graders to a Camp Mendocino retreat in the fall of 2022.

AN ONGOING COMMITMENT TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SAFETY
At BGCSF, the safety of our young people is always our number one priority. Our organization is committed to the highest standards of safety and integrity and has zero tolerance for behavior that harms children. Our caring staff are focused on providing both physically and emotionally safe places for our children and teens to thrive. To compliment this, we work hard to design our Clubhouses and Camp with physical and emotional safety in mind.

INVESTING IN FACILITIES
We are incredibly proud to be an organization that consistently puts the safety and needs of youth first in all of its decisions. Our buildings are an extension of this commitment and an important part of our youth development work. We know that great spaces inspire kids and show youth that they deserve to be cared for and respected.
This year, we were delighted to collaborate with some incredible partner organizations on some amazing facility enhancement projects. This included a gym refurbishment at our Willie Mays Clubhouse at Hunters Point with Good Tidings, the Warriors and United Airlines; a newly designed Learning Center at our Columbia Park Clubhouse with Old Navy; and two newly refurbished NBA Cares Learn & Play Zone at Columbia Park Clubhouse with the Warriors, Kaiser Permanente, and State Farm.
PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS:
The Golden State Warriors have been outstanding partners with BGCSF since 2011, making significant investments in the development of Bay Area youth. This year, the Warriors completed multiple facility improvement projects at our Clubhouses, improving the safety and appearance of our spaces as well as providing inspiring rooms for our youth to learn, grow, and play. Through these generous facility improvements as well as Hoops4Kids support, game-day ticket donations, Board engagement, and sponsorship support, the Warriors are always thinking about how to best drive positive change in the community.

OUR
OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND BELONGING
BGCSF is deeply committed to creating a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) at all levels of our organization. It is our intention that everyone who knows our organization, knows our values … but more importantly that they experience these values in all their interactions with us.
We continue to strengthen this work through a Board Task Force and a Staff Steering Committee.
The Club’s Vision Statement for DEIB was developed by the Staff Steering Committee and sets the tone and direction for our commitment to this work:
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco strives to create environments designed to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. We are committed to fostering a culture where staff, youth, and volunteers feel free from explicit and implicit bias, prejudice, and discrimination.
The Staff Steering Committee members (above) are: Chaka Young, Senior Director of Human Resources, Erin Gutierrez, Senior Director of Programs and Advancement, Harold Love, Vice President of Club Services, Maxine Wilson, Chief Operating Officer, and Rob Connolly, President
The Board Task Force members are: Lucinda Lee Katz and Orpheus Crutchfield (Co-Chairs), Ann Arora, Sanjay Banker, Brandon Boze, Derick Brown, Rob Connolly, Elena Gomez, Erin Gutierrez, Gail Hunter, and Harold Love
“Our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging work is central to our mission to inspire and enable young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. We are committed to ensuring that all youth and staff feel a strong sense of belonging so they can excel at BGCSF. Using a DEIB lens is important because it sheds light on the things that prevent us from achieving our mission.”
ERIN GUTIERREZ, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS & ADVANCEMENT
For staff, BGCSF takes action in the following areas to promote and further advance our vision:
• Staff training and education
• Opportunities for staff advancement and career success
• Culturally-competent youth programming
• Celebration of culture and identity
• Use of strengths-based language and ethical storytelling
• Increased opportunities for staff voice
At the Board level, BGCSF takes action in the following areas to promote and further advance our vision:
• Training new Board Members on BGCSF’s DEIB values
• Ongoing DEIB training for Board Members
• Annual review of Board diversity, including diversity in leadership roles
• Debrief BGCSF’s signature events for inclusivity
• Review staff work in the area of DEIB
• Bring generative and relevant DEIB topics to the Board

STAFF SPOTLIGHTS
As the Senior Director of Programs and Advancement, Erin leads the Citywide team responsible for providing holistic programmatic support to all Clubs. This includes Behavioral Health Services; Academics; Sports, Fitness & Play; and Youth Leadership & Workforce Development . Erin has worked at BGCSF for 15 years and has been in the youth development field her entire career.
Erin Gutierrez
Senior Director of Programs and Advancement
BA History of the Americas, University of California, Santa Cruz
MA Nonprofit Administration, University of San Francisco
Doctorate of Education (EdD) candidate in Organization and Leadership, University of San Francisco
“I’ve always worked with youth and families. I think my career’s general theme has been serving youth and families who are navigating multiple unjust and racist systems.” After nearly a decade of working with youth living in group homes, hospitalized, or incarcerated, Erin decided she wanted to work more in communities. “I was drawn to BGCSF because I enjoyed the close partnership with families and other community organizations. Youth need support from the entire village to change the systems they’re up against.”
Erin has assumed multiple roles across the organization. She originally joined the organization as the Education Director at
our Sunnydale Clubhouse and advanced to become the Clubhouse Director. Erin continued to grow her career within the organization, taking on additional leadership roles, including the organizationwide Director of Learning and Development. Although Erin recognizes and appreciates the institutional knowledge gained while working within an agency for well over a decade, she credits empathy and personal connection as the crucial factor to her success at BGCSF over the years. “A core part of my work is connected to my own family. In addition to working here, I’ve raised my own kids in the Club, my mom even worked for the Club at one point.”
The opportunity to fuse family and career has afforded Erin a valuable perspective. “I feel connected on a familial level. It’s not just working with other people’s kids or other people’s communities. It’s super personal. The Club is a second home to my kids. Our organizational decisions and practices directly impact my family; it’s as close as it can get for me.”
In his role as Clubhouse Director, Spencer knows first-hand how important it is for kids to be connected to highquality programming and nurtured by supportive relationships. After serving the San Francisco school community as an Athletic Director, Dean, and then Principal, Spencer recognized a critical gap in the lives of youth and decided he wanted to be part of the solution:
“Kids and families cannot get by with the support from schools alone. A vast part of young peoples’ lives happen after school and over the summer. After working with kids and families in our city for some time, I took a pause to evaluate where I could make the most impact. I made a deliberate decision to dedicate my work, life, and career to those kids and families who, without an organization like BGCSF, would not have the support they need, and would not be okay.”
Spencer has been a Clubhouse Director for 11 years, and with BGCSF overall for 14 years. Spencer describes his role as the
Clubhouse Director as an intersection of art and science. “When it comes to science, there is a lot of good research out there. We know kids’ developmental stages at every age and there are many best practices that we use in programming. Then there’s the art. Clubhouses in San Francisco are incredibly diverse and include many different neighborhoods. So as the Clubhouse Director, I must come to understand what the needs are for the community that my Club serves and the community that we want to build culturally. Then, I have to overlay the science with the art to create a dynamic and impactful experience.”
Spencer currently supports a team of 18 staff members within ten different departments. When asked about his favorite part of his job, Spencer is very clear: “It really comes down to the youth. Many of our kids face struggles in their lives and our team is here to support them from day one. It’s so powerful to experience the progress that they make year after year and to be part of such an incredible transformation.”

SAN FRANCISCO COMPANIES GIVE BACK
Sixth Street has been a tremendous supporter and partner of BGCSF’s since 2011. The firm has been a title sponsor of our Annual Gala for the last five years, and its employees continue to engage in BGCSF programs and services in impactful ways. From annual volunteer events, to in-kind donations, to leadership engagement on our Board of Governors, Sixth Street is deeply engaged, amplifying BGCSF’s ability to deliver critical programs and services to the youth we serve.
Deloitte is a longtime partner of BGCSF. During the pandemic, Deloitte never wavered and, in fact, increased their support. Employees engaged with our Teen Services programs by participating in virtual career exposures and professional development workshops. From leadership on our Board of Governors, to deep engagement on our NextGen Council, to multiple employee volunteers, we can always depend on Deloitte to support the Clubs in the most impactful ways.
Direct support was provided during the time that the Club needed it most. A donation from the Deloitte Foundation provided direct support for our Career Connect @ BGCSF program to help 9th – 12th grade participants learn from businesses and visit local companies and community-based organizations with the Bay Area’s fastest growing industries such as computer science, data analytics and other STEM disciplines.
Since 2011, Hudson Pacific Properties (HPP) has been a valued and an important partner. We are especially proud to showcase HPP’s support as the Presenting Sponsor at our Golf Tournament. In addition to financial sponsorship, HPP employees have contributed meaningful in-kind gifts to our Clubhouses, including pumpkins for Halloween and gifts during the holiday season. We also always look forward to hosting HPP employees for their annual volunteer events at our Clubs. HPP continues to be an incredible partner, always thinking of ways to make our Clubs a festive and positive place for our members.

PwC has supported BGCSF since 2000. During the pandemic, PwC found incredibly impactful ways for its employees to stay engaged, providing meaningful support to our Teen Services programs by participating in virtual career exposures, college essay writing, mock interviews, and more. The firm also significantly increased their financial contribution during a time that the Club needed it the most. From leadership on our Board of Governors, to deep engagement on our NextGen Council, to multiple employee volunteers, we can always depend on PwC to support the Clubs in the most impactful ways.
