WHO WE ARE

Since 1891, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) has provided high-quality, community-based youth development services to at-risk youth in San Francisco. Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.

Our Clubs are located in neighborhoods with the fewest resources for youth, and we are open when youth need us the most — after school, on most school holidays, and all day during the summer.

We impact the lives of Club members, primarily ages six to 18, by focusing on academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character and community engagement, and job readiness with earning potential. Our Formula for Impact is based on running targeted programs in these areas and ensuring regular attendance and an optimal experience in our Clubs.

MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP

Thank you for making time to review our 2023 Annual Report. Meeting every child where they are and making a positive difference in their life is BGCSF’s passion and purpose. We embrace the responsibility and the opportunity to help every school-age youth learn, grow, and succeed! In this report, we are pleased to share some highlights that demonstrate our commitment to stepping up where kids and families need us most, tackling tough challenges, and always moving forward.

We are proud of our steadfast commitment to high-quality programming, always putting the best interest of youth first. We use nationally recognized outcome measurement tools and are committed to a framework for continuous quality improvement. Our beautiful Clubhouses provide a second home for young people all year long, focusing on programs and activities that support academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character and community engagement, and job readiness with earning potential.

This year, we were especially excited to break ground on a new state-of-theart Clubhouse in Sunnydale (a neighborhood adjacent to the Cow Palace that we have served for over 30 years) and look forward to the grand opening in September 2024. This ambitious project — a public-private partnership — speaks to the values of BGCSF we always put kids first, we take smart risks, we partner with others to accomplish important things, and we make longterm commitments that kids and families can depend on.

We are also proud of some of the new opportunities we have developed to amplify youth voices, including the leadership role we played in the California Days of Advocacy in which teens from across California met with elected officials to advocate for change in their communities. Our Youth of the Year program continues to be a standout opportunity for youth while bringing attention to the challenges and opportunities that San Francisco youth face.

As always, what we achieve as an organization is made possible by the supportive relationships we have with individuals, corporations, foundations, government partners, other nonprofits, and our staff. Thank you for your trust and support!

Sincerely,

A COMMITMENT TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SAFETY

Throughout the year, the safety of our young people is always our number one priority. Our organization is committed to the highest standards of safety and integrity and has zero tolerance for behavior that harms children. This year, we consolidated all our robust policies into a comprehensive Protection of Youth Framework Policy and have prioritized publicizing this document across our communications platforms and on new signage throughout our lobbies.

We also invested in new ways to communicate our stringent requirements for all staff and volunteers by creating training videos for all policies to complement our written policies and in-person education sessions.

Staff review all training and policy materials as part of the onboarding process and are required to review them continuously throughout the year.

CONTINUOUS INVESTMENT IN STAFF TRAINING

As always, over 160 staff members came together for multiple all-day trainings and workshops, including Safety Awareness Day and Managers Safety Awareness Day throughout the year. Our Senior Leadership, Club Leadership, and Behavioral Health Services Teams collaborate on content that ensures that we are providing both physically and emotionally safe places for our children and teens to thrive.

With the support of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Child & Club Safety Department, we implement a comprehensive safety approach that reinforces our own best practices including:

+ Mandatory Background Checks

+ Mandatory Reporting

+ Reporting and Analyzing Incidents

+ Reference Requirements

+ Regular and Robust Trainings

For over a decade, the Golden State Warriors have significantly supported BGCSF. The Warriors and Chase Center host our annual Youth of the Year Celebration, transforming Chase into a space that is uplifting for all our event attendees. Renovating Club rooms to be inspiring spaces for youth, tickets to games, Board engagement, and Hoops 4 Kids support are other ways the Warriors show their commitment to our organization and to our City.

INVESTING IN A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR ALL COMMUNITIES

In December 2023, we broke ground on a state-of-theart Boys & Girls Club in Sunnydale, San Francisco’s largest public housing property. This Club will replace a smaller and outdated space that we have occupied since 1991. San Francisco Mayor, London Breed; California Senator, Scott Wiener; and District 10 Supervisor, Shamann Walton were in attendance and youth from our Sunnydale Clubhouse shared their enthusiasm about the new space in opening remarks.

Our Clubhouse will be part of a Community Hub, led by Mercy Housing, and will also be home to Wu Yee Early Childhood Center and Rec & Park gym and park. We will quadruple the number of kids we serve each day in this brand-new facility which will include a STEM Center, Middle School Room, High School Room, Dance Studio, Games Room, and Dining Room as well as direct access to the Department of Recreation and Park’s brand-new pool, gym, and park. This long-awaited milestone will ensure that hundreds of young people will have a stateof-the-art space to actively and passionately pursue and realize their dreams.

“I am excited to see the new Clubhouse open so the kids in Sunnydale will have access to more opportunities.”

The Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD) continues to invest in and influence our organization in important ways. Critical capital upgrades to our facilities are funded by MOHCD. They also fund community and teen leadership programs at our Sunnydale Clubhouse. We offer a special acknowledgment to the MOHCD staff who are fantastic partners year after year.

A COMMITMENT TO HIGH-QUALITY PROGRAMS

Throughout the school year and summer, we continued to design our high-quality programming with a commitment to holistic support in mind. The Club builds upon the school year by providing homework help (Power Hour), professional tutors; college prep; job readiness; leadership programs; arts programming; and sports, fitness, and play.

Our approach is extremely intentional and rooted in over 130 years of youth development experience. Our Formula for Impact prioritizes four key program areas. All our high-quality programs and support services tie to one of these areas.

COMMITMENT TO OUTCOMES-FOCUSED WORK

Our Outcomes Measurement Team is dedicated to providing intentional data collection practices that provide opportunities to review the efficacy of our programming and allow all stakeholders to better understand our impact or use the data to learn and improve. BGCSF uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods including surveys, observations, “pulse checks”, and individual outcomes tracking.

The San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF) stands as our largest and most influential supporter. DCYF brings together “government agencies, schools, and community-based organizations to strengthen our communities to lead full lives of opportunity and happiness.” DCYF further invests in enhancing the professional growth of our Club staff, conducting program observations, and administering youth surveys. These initiatives ensure that we consistently deliver the highest quality programming to our members.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Throughout the year, Club members of all ages participate in community service and leadership programs that build their skills while teaching them that they have the power to positively bring about change in their community. With guidance from our skilled and caring staff and access to unique and age-appropriate opportunities, BGCSF helps youth map out life goals, gain perspective on problems with which they struggle, and develop their professionalism.

For our middle school and high school teens, career exposures provide unique opportunities to see workplaces in action by visiting local companies and community-based organizations. Through experiences like this, our young people build connections, discover what interests them, and learn what is necessary to set themselves up for college or other learning opportunities beyond high school.

COLLEGE PREP

BGCSF’s college prep program includes assistance with college applications, connections to college scholarships, and college tours. Over Spring Break, over 60 youth from seven Clubhouses attended a three-day college tour including visits to the campuses of University of San Francisco; University of California, Merced; and Sacramento State University.

The Royal Auto team is dedicated to ensuring that San Francisco teens have exposure to and an opportunity to learn about the auto industry. In 2023, Royal Auto opened their service center, showroom, and administrative spaces to our Mission and Columbia Park Clubhouse youth for an afternoon of career exploration. The company also is a generous sponsor of our Annual Golf Tournament.

PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: CNRA AND THE GUARDSMEN

BGCSF strengthened its collaboration with the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA), empowering us to broaden youth access to Mendocino redwoods and Native American culture. This multi-year grant has notably facilitated the expansion of our Camp Mendocino scholarship program for indigenous youth in the area.

The Guardsmen are our longest-standing partner, collaborating with BGCSF since 1947! Their campership program is the primary provider of scholarships each summer for hundreds of youth to attend Camp Mendocino. The Guardsmen also have representation on our Board of Governors, share their time and talents on work weekends at Camp, and provide Christmas trees and pumpkins to our Clubhouses.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND BELONGING: SPOTLIGHT ON CULTURAL & IDENTITY-BASED HOLIDAYS & CELEBRATION

Members at our Willie Mays Clubhouse created their own personalized buttons and other crafts in celebration of Black History Month.

Promoting safe, supportive, and inclusive environments for all youth and staff is at the heart of the work we do and what we stand for as an organization. Throughout the year, BGCSF formally recognizes certain holidays and identitybased or heritage-based celebrations. Through Clubhouse celebrations, special programming, and the publishing of youth and staff reflections, we elevate the voices, experiences, and perspectives of Club members, staff, and communities throughout each month.

The holidays and celebrations we recognize are determined by the demographics of our youth and staff and are reviewed annually by our Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging Steering Committee.

In celebration of Arab American Heritage Month, our Tenderloin Clubhouse shared meals with Arab families in the community!

PARTNER HIGHLIGHT: NEW YORK LIFE FOUNDATION

The New York Life Foundation continues its loyal support of our diversity, equity and inclusion grief programming for youth. Our strengthened post-pandemic behavioral health model has benefitted from the financial investment and expertise of the Foundation, and we are grateful for this partnership as the bereavement and mental health needs of our youth increase.

YOUTH VOICE

ELENA FROM OUR VISITACION VALLEY CLUBHOUSE NAMED 2023 NORTHERN CALIFORNIA YOUTH OF THE YEAR

On February 9, 2023, we held the 15th Annual Charles Schwab Youth of the Year Celebration at Chase Center and proudly awarded the 2023 Citywide Youth of the Year title to Elena, a 12-year member of BGCSF’s Visitacion Valley Clubhouse. Elena continued to advance in the national competition and was ultimately named the Northern California Youth of the Year.

Elena credited supportive and caring Club staff, mentorship, and involvement with the Club’s teen leadership programs such as the President’s Advisory Council and Teen Advocacy Group as key aspects of her Club experience. An outstanding academic student, Elena now attends University of California, Santa Cruz where she studies environmental science and issues related to climate change.

TEEN ADVOCACY GROUP (TAG)

The Teen Advocacy Group (TAG) is a program for our teens in Greater Visitacion Valley to explore social issues that are important to them with the ultimate goal of building an advocacy platform around an issue of their choice. Teens also engage in projectbased learning to decide on an issue and then to develop a platform to use and share for their advocacy work. This past year, teens explored topics related to mental health and police brutality and made two videos:

Police Brutality video

Mental Health video

Beyond this, TAG participated in California Days of Advocacy in which teens from across California met with elected officials to advocate for change in their communities. BGCSF teens took a tour of the capitol and met with elected officials including State Senator Scott Wiener and Assemblymember Matt Haney.

For a remarkable 16 consecutive years, Charles Schwab & Co. has been the Presenting Sponsor of our Youth of the Year Celebration. This event celebrates extraordinary teens who demonstrate leadership, academic achievements, and service to their Club and community. Schwab is also involved in many other ways: Schwabies volunteer frequently at our Clubs, the company has consistent representation on our Board of Governors and NextGen Leadership Council, they provide annual Money Matters financial literacy curriculum and Reality Store activations, and they contribute generous financial support. The “spirit of service” that Schwab values is certainly felt by BGCSF, and we are grateful for how they consistently support the youth of BGCSF.

Heidi Coffer

B.S. in Business Administration, Accounting Concentration, California State University, San Bernardino

As CFO and SVP of Finance, Heidi is in charge of all financial aspects of the organization. BGCSF is a large and complex nonprofit organization with a 133 year history. BGCSF’s financial operation is far more complex than people may realize and extends well beyond its $21M+ annual budget.

Heidi’s work is multifaceted. “On the revenue side, I manage the forecasting and cash flow management for our capacity-building and capital campaigns and track all donor restricted funds. My team is also deeply involved with government grants, ensuring that BGCSF maintains the utmost integrity relating to grant spend. We also track expense spending very closely to ensure that our expenses are always aligned with what is best for youth. Beyond this, we also manage payroll and benefits, ensuring that all of our employees are paid properly and on time.”

Heidi has decades of experience as a CPA and has been affiliated with BGCSF since 1997. Starting as an external audit manager, Heid supported the merger between the

Earl Declet

Citywide Director of Youth Leadership and Workforce Development

B.A. in Philosophy, The University of California, Santa Barbara

As Citywide Director of Youth Leadership and Workforce Development, Earl is responsible for the oversight of teen programming across BGCSF. Earl provides support and resources for High School Services Directors, Clubhouse leadership, our residential summer camp, and teens and their families, through multiple resource streams, opportunities, and programs. He is also in charge of leading the Youth of the Year Program.

When asked about his favorite parts of his job, Earl responds “helping teens identify what they are passionate about and then finding ways that the Club can connect them to opportunities that will allow them to explore their interests and further develop their skills. The Club does so much to prepare youth for life after high school. From

Columbia Park Boys & Girls Club and San Francisco Boys & Girls Club, creating Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco in 2001. By the time she became part of the internal team in 2013, her connection to the organization was well established: “The decision to come in-house at BGCSF was easy — I saw first-hand that this was an organization that is deeply committed to putting youth first. Kids are our future; we all know that, but seeing it in action is so inspiring. I am thrilled to play a leadership role in supporting the infrastructure that makes this work possible.”

Heidi credits working directly with President, Rob Connolly, and Chief Operating Officer, Maxine Wilson, as a driving force behind her success and the accomplishment of strategic plan goals: “Together, we’ve successfully opened new sites, reached more kids, increased salaries for our employees, embarked on capital projects, implemented new tools to increase efficiency, and so much more.”

Expanding upon her commitment to the organization, Heidi shares that nurturing young team members who are new to their professional careers, or just new to BGCSF, is one of the most gratifying parts of her work. “Seeing my team members’ growth and dedication to our organization is so rewarding. Two of my team members were coaches this year to our Youth of the Year participants, and it was so great to see how much they got out of the program. I’m often a coach annually, and it’s always the best part of my job!”

college prep, to career exposures, mock interviews, access to scholarship opportunities, and college tours, BGCSF is constantly thinking about the best ways to ensure that members will leave us at age 18 ready for life.”

Earl also cites his annual leadership of the Youth of the Year program as a highlight of his year. “The Youth of the Year program is a big commitment by the youth and BGCSF. Youth engage in team-building workshops, they gain leadership skills, and they learn public speaking skills and how to share their own authentic stories through essay and speech writing. I am always so inspired by each of our Youth of the Year, particularly their commitment and dedication.”

Earl began his career with BGCSF in 2016 as the High School Services Director at the Excelsior Clubhouse. He credits his foundation as a Club staff member and the relationships with youth as what keeps him connected to youth and excited about his work every day. “Having a job that allows me to work side by side with our youth to map out life goals, gain perspective on problems with which they struggle, and help them navigate through complex times is incredibly important to me.”

SAN FRANCISCO COMPANIES GIVE BACK

United Airlines has been BGCSF’s official airline and proud partner since 2009. They have provided financial support as well as in-kind travel to ensure our staff and youth are able to access important conferences and leadership opportunities across the country. United Airlines strives to inspire the next generation, offering opportunities for youth to explore future careers in aviation and supporting STEM education. In 2023, United Airlines hosted BGCSF middle school girls at their Girls in Aviation Day and members were exposed to a variety of career opportunities in the airline industry, leaving them motivated and inspired. Additionally, United interns volunteered at our Excelsior Clubhouse over the summer. We appreciate United’s dedication to the youth of tomorrow.

McKinsey & Company has been a steadfast supporter of BGCSF since 2011. McKinsey’s commitment to partnering with BGCSF was showcased through many activations and levels of support throughout the year. Notably, McKinsey interns supported programming at our Mission Clubhouse during their annual Day of Service, and the firm also provided pro-bono consulting services in support of our strategic planning process. We are especially grateful to McKinsey for their ongoing leadership on our Board of Governors and our NextGen Leadership Council.

Since 2001, BlackRock has been a valued partner of BGCSF. We are profoundly grateful for the ongoing, generous financial support as well as the engagement of the employees of BlackRock. In 2023, we were one of five proud recipients of the firm’s annual BlackRock Giving Days where the firm raised and donated over $1.5M to support local organizations. In addition, employees spent hours of volunteer time assembling wellness kits and collecting and wrapping holiday gifts to bring joy and support to our members. We are also grateful for the continued leadership and representation from BlackRock on both our Board of Governors and our NextGen Leadership Council.
