CITYWIDE EDUCATION
OF SAN FRANCISCO
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco’s (BGCSF) youth members returned to school full-time in the fall of 2021 after a prolonged interruption by the pandemic. To address students’ academic needs during this unprecedented time, BGCSF implemented an array of new, comprehensive interventions and supports, which included the following:
VISION & GOALS Rooted in socioemotional development practices, our academic programming and services foster an environment where members are motivated to learn, progress grades on time, graduate high school, and leave us with a plan to succeed in the future. We identified the following goals to achieve this vision: 1.
Provide members with tailored support based on individual academic needs Connect members with relevant academic enrichment programming, services, and resources Cultivate a network of academic support for each member through collaboration with caregivers, teachers, external partners, and Club Regularly assess members’ academic progress and attitudes toward learning over time
The addition of eight new full-time Education Liaison positions to connect members with tailored academic resources and support across sites BGCSF doubled the size of the Behavioral Health Services (BHS) team, with each traditional Clubhouse having a dedicated BHS professional on staff to help Club members be ready to succeed The development and implementation of the new “Club Scholars” program, which provides individualized academic coaching and case management for youth who need extra support Increased investment in professional tutoring services, providing both in-person and virtual options with more bilingual instructors Curriculum, supplies, and training for program staff to facilitate rigorous STEM, Literacy, and Math enrichment programs at all sites Increased access to scholarships for college tuition, applications, and test fees for Club members

SPECIAL PROGRAMS & EVENTS LearnUp (LU) is an intensive program that teaches members to read using a method that raises their ability to grade-level peers. Designed to support struggling readers, including members with dyslexia, LU works 1:1 with members using structured literacy and blended learning strategies.
The Citywide Spelling Bee returned in July 2022 to great fanfare after a 2-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The annual BGCSF event is open to all Clubs for K-5th grade members. Youth put in several hours of practice at Clubs to prepare for the bee while building their vocabulary and literacy skills.
The BGCSF College Tour took 34 teens representing five Clubhouses to Sonoma State and Camp Mendocino in March 2022. The event started with a campus tour at Sonoma State. The group then headed to Camp Mendocino for two nights, where we held several workshops and activities to recreate an immersive college experience.
BGCSF scholarship awards increased in 2022 with the addition of the Doris Fisher Imagine Scholarship. Ten additional members received financial support for post-secondary education, totaling 27 youth who received awards. Collectively, BGCSF members received $725K in college scholarships.
Luna Z. is a second-grade student who started the school year unable to read. She is an English Language Learner with monolingual, Spanishspeaking parents. Our bilingual Education Liaison at the Excelsior Clubhouse, Erika, attended Luna’s parent-teacher conferences and worked with the adults in her life to develop an individualized academic support plan. We also connected Luna with Learn Up tutoring services, a BGCSF partner. After her first 40 hours of participation in the program, Luna now reads and writes at grade level, and most importantly, she is always enthusiastic about learning more. We are so incredibly inspired and proud of the work she has done!
GREAT FUTURES START HERE.
