WELCOME TO ANTIQUES AT THE GARDENS 2021! What makes this antiques show so special and enduring? Could it be our community’s exceptional generosity and never-failing compassion for building a better Birmingham? Or, perhaps, our community’s love of beauty and design that propels the show year after year? The show’s success could also be related to this community’s love of heritage and tradition that is exemplified by our passion for antiques.

We think the answer is you, our Birmingham community. Our community believes in its natural beauty, and we appreciate our special brand of design that has suffused the country through the many national publications with creative teams rooted here. We understand the tradition upon which we stand, and we recognize the potential we have to bring that tradition to a new generation. We also understand that Birmingham has a special place in recognizing the future. We know that we can always do more and do better for our community, with an awareness that our community has a bigger influence than just Birmingham.

It is a terrific opportunity to showcase our beloved Birmingham and to shine a spotlight on you, our community. Antiques at the Gardens provides a platform to highlight to the nation the beauty of our region. Your support of Antiques at the Gardens benefits a wonderful cause. By attending, sponsoring, and shopping the show, you enable us to fulfill our mission: to protect, nurture, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. We are honored to work side by side with the City of Birmingham to fulfill the promise of a botanical garden. Together, we are responsible for the growth and success of these extraordinary 67.5 acres. Because of your commitment, each year the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens educates thousands of schoolchildren about the science of plants and grows thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables to combat hunger in our community. Your support also enables us to help maintain the Gardens, spearhead much-needed improvement projects, and work to promote the Gardens as a destination of local and regional significance.

RICHARD KEITH LANGHAM 2021 Show Ambassador Alabama born and Manhattan based, Keith has been a force in the decorating world for more than 30 years. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and studying at the Study Center for the History of Fine and Decorative Arts in London, he then apprenticed with design legend Mark Hampton. Keith spent 10 years with Irvine & Fleming before founding his own firm in 1990. His keen eye and ebullient talent serve well in assembling his signature rooms—those that speak to the past in a fresh way and are brimming with luscious color, pattern, and couture detailing. Perhaps no one summed up his aesthetic better than Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who once proclaimed him to have “a sorcerer’s eye.” We could not be more honored to have Keith bring his talent and affection for Birmingham to our 15th-annual Antiques at the Gardens show!

CELEBRATING 15 YEARS One look at past show catalogs and keepsake photos and it is at once evident how much Antiques at the Gardens (AATG) has grown and blossomed over the past 15 years. Going back to 2006, you can see that this special event—the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ largest annual fundraiser—was destined to become a beloved Birmingham tradition. From the start, dedicated volunteer committees crafted a fun and inviting show structure: a kickoff gala, ticketed talks by noteworthy design influencers, and plenty of antiques dealers from around the country.

Special guests like renowned Southern gardener Ryan Gainey; American designer Miles Redd; lifestyle chef Alex Hitz; architect Bobby McAlpine; “Prince of Chintz” Mario Buatta; acclaimed decorator Bunny Williams; and lifestyle icon Martha Stewart have given heft to this already attractive event. This year’s guest lineup features show alumni Charlotte Moss, Mark D. Sikes, James Farmer, Christopher Spitzmiller, and Richard Keith Langham. Premiering nationally recognized speakers new to the show this year are Suzanne Tucker, Cathy Kincaid, Corey Damen Jenkins, Ken Pursley, Matthew Carter, and Fernando Wong.

celebrating 10 years • inspiring science education

At the heart of every Antiques at the Gardens show are the dealers themselves. In addition to recognizing longtime participants such as McDonough Fine Art, Thomas Fortner, and Whitehall Antiques, you will discover several new faces. The caliber and variety are the true constants of every AATG show, and this one is no different. Be sure to seek out (and take home) one-of-a-kind treasures such as furniture, rugs, treasures, jewlery, and art. It should be noted why the Antiques at the Gardens show exists in the first place: to support the ongoing and important work that the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens does in educating visitors about plants, gardens, and the environment and ensuring the ongoing stewardship and enhancement of the Gardens. From the children who come to the Gardens on field trips to the senior citizens who engage in its green spaces, as well as the numerous programs the Friends puts on for our community, Birmingham Botanical Gardens serves quite simply as a gateway to the natural world. In our 15th year, we continue to attract visitors from all over Birmingham and around the world, making it easy to see just how special our Gardens are and why they deserve to be supported. Thank you for joining us for this anniversary celebration. We hope you enjoy the opportunity to be educated and entertained. As you shop, may you find something that is—much like the Gardens—timeless and treasured.

MEET 2021 ANTIQUES AT THE GARDENS HONOREES KIM MATTHEWS AND JOAN STARNES 15th-Anniversary Show Celebrates the Event’s First Co-chairs By Christiana Roussel

A

show as grand as Antiques at the Gardens does not just come together overnight. In addition to months of planning and a squadron of dedicated volunteers, it requires vision, dedication, cajoling, listening, researching, engaging, and a whole lot of heavy lifting. This year, the nonprofit Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the mission-driven membership organization that works side by side with the City of Birmingham Park & Recreation Board at the Gardens, honors Kim Matthews and Joan Starnes, chairwomen of the first Antiques at the Gardens show. The multiday event we experience today would not be possible were it not for the dedication and work Kim and Joan undertook more than 15 years ago.

These two longtime Birmingham residents and lifelong friends joined forces to create something both grand and intimate, sophisticated and approachable, entertaining and educational. Their ability to attract beloved antiques dealers—convincing them that this show would be amazing and worth participating in—was just the beginning. Crafting a setting befitting the treasures these vendors would showcase was instrumental in setting the tone for the event. Their deft hands ensured that guests felt welcomed and that this would become an annual affair not to be missed. Joan and Kim will be the first to tell you that it was their prior community involvement and phenomenal committees that made it all possible. “We were both involved with the Junior League of Birmingham antiques show, and that gave us the inspiration and confidence that we could re-create that same feel at the Gardens,” says Joan. When asked how that concept translated to an event here, Kim adds, “It appealed to us to use the smaller, more intimate space that the Gardens offered. [Staging chairs] Tricia Noble and Mitzi Davis were instrumental in optimizing the Gardens’ space into a perfect setting for the dealers, showing them Southern hospitality at its best—a tradition that continues today, creating a welcome atmosphere for our dealers, speakers, and guests.”

For guests who were not able to attend that very first show, Kim and Joan paint a picture for us: “The theme was Heirlooms in Bloom, which helped us marry the concept of having antiques and flowers, allowing us to showcase both,” says Kim. “One of our biggest challenges was coming up with the name, Antiques at the Gardens.” Curating a cohesive feel for a three-day event with lots of moving parts—a gala, talks, and time with dealers—is no small feat. Having just the right people in just the right positions is a testament to Joan’s and Kim’s leadership styles and ability to share their vision with others. “If you could look back at our printed material, catalog, brochure, etc., [from 2006], you could see how we blended the two concepts—antiques and flowers—in a creative and elegant way,” says Joan. She gives “a special nod to Val Holman, our marketing chair, who was instrumental in creating the initial design concept.”

are learning about the science of plants, vegetables grown and harvested at the Gardens are being shared with area residents in need, the Gardens’ two dozen garden spaces have continued to grow and thrive thanks in part to the success of the Friends’ fundraising efforts, and visitors from near and far can enjoy a safe and welcoming retreat in the heart of the Magic City.

“We have been friends for a long time, so joining forces to bring this beloved antiques show to the Gardens was a natural fit.” —Joan Starnes

Today Joan and Kim are enjoying a bit more downtime—traveling with their spouses to mountain retreats in Highlands, North Carolina, or bringing grandchildren to the Japanese Garden to see the koi and turtles here. Today more than ever, they can appreciate the impact they had in producing that first Antiques at the Gardens show, knowing that scores of schoolchildren

While expectations were high that year for a successful event, no one really knew exactly how everything would play out. When asked what was on their wishlist for the event, the two are quick to respond with humor and humility. “Our wishlist was simple: to pull it off!” Kim says with a laugh. By any measure, their tireless dedication and hard work paid off in spades. “We had no idea what to expect as far as how [Antiques at the Gardens] would be received, so we were delighted with the funds raised, show attendance, and positive feedback from all fronts,” says Joan. “The dealers lined up to return the next year, which was also a positive sign.” Kim and Joan are eager to share the credit for their big win for the Friends: “Our biggest success was choosing the right committee [members] to help us achieve our goal,” says Kim. “In addition to the staging chairs, Tricia and Mitzi, our hospitality committee chairs, Cameron Crowe and Kate Phillips, were invaluable in creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for both dealers and committee members. We should also honor our men’s committee chairs, Stewart Dansby, Hubert Goings, Jr., and Douglas Stockham. They jumped in with us to make the first show a success.”

HOW YOUR SUPPORT BENEFITS THE GARDENS Your support truly grows. Created to extend the reach and impact of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the nonprofit Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens (formerly the Birmingham Botanical Society) has for more than 55 years worked side by side with the City of Birmingham Park and Recreation Board to fulfill the promise of a botanical garden by promoting the stewardship and enhancement of the Gardens, providing impactful educational programs and outreach, marketing and communicating about the Gardens, and raising funds to support these efforts. A mission-driven membership organization, the Friends seeks to protect, nurture, and share the wonders of these beloved Gardens—a community treasure that provides comfort, joy, and inspiration in a peaceful outdoor setting when we, and those around us, need it most. We are committed to serving the Gardens, serving the community; serving our visitors; and inspiring a passion for plants, gardens, and the environment. Your support of Antiques at the Gardens enables the Friends to educate thousands of schoolchildren annually about the science of plants and our dependence on them, to grow and harvest thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables to combat hunger in our community, to help maintain beloved garden spaces and spearhead much-needed improvement projects, and to promote the Gardens as a destination of local and regional significance. Over the past few years, member and donor support has allowed us to accomplish important projects here, from the renovation of popular water features and restoration of the Japanese Garden’s Long Life Lake to our recent refresh of the Southern Living Garden flower border and Little Ones Memory Garden, as well as the Gardens’ new signature sign at the intersection of Cahaba and Lane Park roads. Our success—and the success of the Gardens—depends on the support of those who value this special place. Thank you for continuing to make our work here possible by supporting Antiques at the Gardens 2021.
