THANK YOU! Our festivities officially kick off with “Gala in the Gardens” on Thursday evening. On Friday, we are honored to welcome Markham Roberts as the featured speaker for the Red Diamond Lecture Series. You’ll want to shop early, and often! We are grateful for the generosity of our corporate sponsors—including our presenting sponsor, IBERIABANK—benefactors, and patrons whose contributions are the foundation of our fundraising efforts. We would also like to extend our gratitude to our committee, volunteers, and the Gardens’ and Friends’ staff for providing the support and guidance necessary to execute this event, and we appreciate the entire Birmingham community for your support of the Gardens this weekend and throughout the year. We hope you enjoy the 2019 Antiques at the Gardens as much as we enjoyed planning it for you, and we invite you to explore the beauty of Birmingham Botanical Gardens while you are here. It is an honor to welcome you to Antiques at the Gardens, Birmingham’s premier antiques show, which has benefited Birmingham Botanical Gardens since 2006. Our fantastic co-chairs, Virginia Amason and Leigh Haver, and their dedicated committee have assembled an impressive lineup of nationally known speakers, dealers, and tastemakers who will entertain and captivate us all throughout this special weekend. The nonprofit Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, a vibrant organization with strong roots in the community, has sought to serve the Gardens and its visitors ever since its founding in 1964. We could not do it without our donors, members, and volunteers. Your generous support of Antiques at the Gardens— our largest fundraiser of the year—plays a crucial role in our mission: to protect, nurture, and share the wonders of the Gardens. These extraordinary 67.5 acres represent a successful public/private partnership between the Friends and the City of Birmingham Park and Recreation Board. Together, we take great pride in the growth and success of one of the nation’s finest botanical gardens. We want to give a special thanks to our presenting sponsor, IBERIABANK, for its continued commitment to this highly regarded tradition—one that gives back to the Birmingham community and ensures that this botanical treasure will be a place of beauty, inspiration, and education for generations to come. Enjoy the show! We hope this weekend also inspires you to explore the Gardens, and return often.

Bill and Emily Bowron
PLEASE JOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE EMILY & BILL BOWRON AT THE 2019 ANTIQUES AT THE GARDENS, OCTOBER 3-6.
Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is pleased to announce the 2019 Antiques at the Gardens honorees: Emily and Bill Bowron. Emily, a Savannah native, is a past co-chair of AATG, an avid gardener, and a former competitive equestrian. Bill, a native of Birmingham, is Chairman, President, and CEO of Red Diamond, Inc., which has sponsored the headline lectures at Antiques at the Gardens since 2009. The Bowrons’ involvement in the Gardens stretches back decades. “I remember visiting the Gardens as a child with my mother, and I recall how excited she was when the Conservatory opened,” says Bill. “We donated coffee trees to the Gardens shortly thereafter.” “I did a little bit of volunteer work in the greenhouses many years ago, but then life got in the way,” says Emily. “When I retired from competition in 2011, I turned to volunteerism to fill the void. So, I considered it a wonderful opportunity when I was asked to co-chair Antiques at the Gardens with Leah Taylor in 2015.” Emily serves on the Antiques Advisory Board, having chaired it for two years. She became a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens and continues to serve on the Board today as Secretary. Antiques at the Gardens and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens have long been a family affair for the Bowrons. “Bill and I have always loved Antiques at the Gardens, and the Gala is one of our favorite events of 8
|
the year. We have found treasures to take home, and our children have enjoyed the offerings, as well. Even my mother would come from Savannah to attend, never leaving empty-handed!” During their tenure as AATG co-chairs, Emily and Leah reintroduced Saturday programs, offering the lectures at no charge to see if there was demand. Taste in Spades was a huge success, and the lectures were filled to capacity. Emily says subsequent chairs have done much to advance the event. “With the inclusion of Martha Stewart last year, they have taken our special weekend to a whole new level, and it will keep getting better,” she says. “It is very special that we are able to bring in nationally acclaimed speakers. And even more special that the funds from this event make the Gardens more accessible to all.” Reflecting on her year as co-chair of AATG, Emily says, “I loved every second of working with an amazing team. But serving as a co-chair can be stressful. As I was leaving on one particularly trying day, perhaps questioning why I had volunteered in the first place, I stepped outside and saw a bus of schoolchildren getting ready for their field trip, and I could tell that they were so excited!” she says. “That reminded me why I’m doing this: to share my love of the Gardens and the outdoors with those who might not otherwise experience this wonderful place.” With the leadership and generosity of supporters such as the Bowrons, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is able to develop educational programs and outreach activities that impact thousands of children and adults each year and to provide important support for the ongoing stewardship and enhancement of the Gardens. “I believe that the Birmingham Botanical Gardens is one of the true gems of Birmingham,” says Emily. “One only has to visit to see the diversity of people enjoying the Gardens.” Bill says there are many reasons that Red Diamond continues its support of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. “It is part of our community outreach and is in recognition of the stature of the Gardens nationally, which further benefits our city,” he says. “The Gardens creates the opportunity for people to enjoy a culturally rich environment, free of charge, year-round, and as such this is a wonderful asset.”

GAVIN DUKE Award-winning landscape architect Gavin Duke, Principal Landscape Architect at PAGE | DUKE Landscape Architects in Nashville, was raised in the rural Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. At an early age, he began putting ideas on paper–sketches inspired by the natural beauty of the surrounding woodlands, the local craftspeople, and farmers. Now, he combines landscape architecture with other arts to design gardens and living environments for people, plants, and animals. He acts as a steward of the land, incorporating sustainable solutions that reduce environmental impact and enhance natural ecosystems. With over 30 years of professional experience and hundreds of installations, including some of the Southeast’s most recognizable projects, Gavin has a special way of designing creative solutions that evoke timelessness in the landscape. His method is collaborative, because sharing ideas and inspiration 22
|
is deeply integral to creating living environments that seamlessly unite and enhance the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. He has traveled to remote corners of the world to gather ideas and experience historic, traditional, and modern spaces. Deep understanding of the historical and contextual elements of landscape architecture allows his designs to preserve and respect each project’s site, purpose and architecture. His philosophy of landscape design is to create a seamless integration of the built environment and its surroundings. This results in spaces that flow into and through their natural environments. His work has been published in national and international publications. Gavin serves on the boards of the ICAA SE Chapter and Friends of Warner Park, as well as the University of Arkansas Professional Advisory Board.

LISA FINE Mississippi-born textile guru Lisa Fine is the founder of Lisa Fine Textiles, which specializes in hand-printed linens that are sold in 16 showrooms worldwide. With a Southern drawl and a truly adventurous spirit, Lisa splits her time between New York and Dallas with frequent trips to Paris and India. Over 20 years ago at a camel festival in Jaisalmer, Lisa fell in love with India. The colors, the patterns, the Mughal palaces, and gardens were her original inspirations for Lisa Fine Textiles. Since then Fine’s far-reaching travels have continued to influence her collection, where exotic and traditional prints in vibrant and romantic colors feel both worldly and timeless. Lisa’s work has appeared in Departures, Elle Decor,
House & Garden UK, House Beautiful, The New York Times, The Herald Tribune, The World of Interiors, and Vogue. Prior to designing textiles, Lisa worked as a contributing editor for Elle Decor and House Beautiful. She is currently a contributing editor for Town & Country. Her book, Near & Far: Interiors I Love, will be published this October by Vendome. In Near & Far, Lisa invites readers into her homes in Dallas, New York, and Paris and then visits the places and people who have been her greatest sources of inspiration. From India to Sweden, and on to London and beyond, she not only provides a trove of design ideas, but also offers advice for anyone interested in giving full expression to their personal style.

Prior to forming her eponymous firm, Becky worked in New York City as a designer until moving to Los Angeles, where she held the senior position at Mark D. Sikes Interiors for many years. She currently splits her time between California and North Carolina and loves being able to incorporate both aesthetics into her designs. Having been raised in the South, and spending much of her adult life in New York and California, Becky gravitates toward creating spaces that feel detailed and approachable—big in design, but wrapped in warmth. She specializes in incorporating classic inherited pieces with new and youthful style, marrying the client’s views and needs with her design vision. Becky is currently working on projects all over the United States, from a children’s clothing store in Los Angeles to ground-up renovations in San Francisco and Birmingham and homes around Los Angeles and Charlotte.

Thank you for being a Friend of the Gardens. Each year, Birmingham Botanical Gardens is delighted to welcome an estimated 350,000 visitors from throughout our region, across the country, and around the world. Our visitors come for many reasons: to enjoy the beauty of the Gardens, to learn about gardening, to discover Alabama’s incredible biodiversity, to connect with nature, to exercise, and to spend time with friends and family in this inspiring setting. The Gardens represents a successful public/private partnership between the City of Birmingham and the nonprofit Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, a mission-driven membership organization that seeks to protect, nurture, and share the wonders of the Gardens. Thank you for being a Friend: Your membership in the Friends ensures that this botanical treasure will continue to be a place of beauty, inspiration, and education for generations to come.
