Spring is coming with great events: please mark your calendars with the dates for our Spring Plant Sale, Earth Day at The Gardens, and the Glorious Gardens showcase– all can be found in this issue and on the web at www.bbgardens.org. Proceeds from the plant sale and garden tour benefit our education programs, where children and adults learn about plants, gardens and the environment. Speaking of learning, we learned quite a bit during the development of our recent Strategic Plan. Significantly, one thing we learned shored up our conviction that The Gardens is many things to many people. We’re everything from a cheap date to a place to take a collegelevel botany class; everything from a beautiful location for an outdoor wedding to a place where over 10,000 children a year attend free, hands-on science-based classes. We also learned that many people, supporters both current and potential, know only one facet of our many functions. If you only know us as an important public green space, you miss the subtleties of our vast and scholarly living collections. If you only see us at business meetings and luncheons, you’re unaware of the cultural diversity of our school programs and weekend visitation. If you only think of us as a local park with local appeal, you underestimate the positive quality of life impact of a nationally-significant institution with free admission. If you believe we’re “old school,” you’re not likely to know about our many partnerships and our sustainable vision for Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Another belief reinforced: if more potential donors knew about our various roles, more people would donate in support of our mission. If current supporters knew more, many would be inspired to support us even more. So I encourage you to learn more about The Gardens. Read about our master plan: www.bbgardens.org/ masterplan. A Buzz Word and the Big Picture: Garden Sustainer Club Olivia Alison, director of development

“Sustainability” is a popular buzz word these days. There is sustainable energy, sustainable housing, sustainable landscape and sustainable growth. The adjective implies that something has the capacity to endure and that the resources involved are being managed responsibly. The Garden Sustainer Club, the top tier of Friends’ members, truly helps sustain this wonderful place and all the good work that goes on here. Sustainers, who give from $2,500 to over $20,000 annually, care passionately about The Gardens and understand its “big picture.” The late Bill Spencer, a charter member of the group, said, “People who can, ought to give more to support a garden that’s free for everyone else.” Sustainers Betty and Charlie Northen explained, "We are Garden Sustainers because that enables The Gardens to better plan and plant for the future." Indeed, ensuring a solid financial footing is a key element of our new strategic plan. Sallie and Jim Johnson joined the Sustainers when the economic climate got tough because they “wanted The Gardens to continue its success.” Sallie said, “People are always surprised at what we have in Birmingham: The Gardens, our art museum, our zoo. Public money for these institutions is dwindling and it is up to individuals to step up and ensure that our community’s vital cultural organizations continue to thrive.” We would like to thank all of our members and donors, but especially our Garden Sustainers. Volunteer Hospitality: A long-standing tradition at The Gardens Taylor Steele, volunteer coordinator

On Thursday, December 8, 2011 Birmingham Botanical Gardens hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, recognizing some individuals that have given their time, passion, and commitment for many years. Each year the luncheon showcases a theme that truly represents the essence of our volunteers. This year’s theme, Southern Hospitality describes our volunteers by their warm, welcoming, and gracious demeanor. A crowd of nearly 150 gathered in the Ruth B. Strange Auditorium for a potluck luncheon. One side note to the annual volunteer luncheon is of course the vast array of wonderful food brought by our volunteers. Each year our volunteers show up with what can only be described as Birmingham’s best family recipes! Our musical entertainment for the luncheon was provided by The Crestwood Trio, featuring Melanie Rodgers, Chris Griffin and Niamh Clarke. Brand Walton, Jr. Volunteer of the Year award, and Director of Development Olivia Alison presented Frances Blount with the Ida C. Burns Volunteer of the Year award. Mrs. Blount served The Gardens as honorary chair for Antiques at The Gardens in 2011, raising over $390,000 to fund educational programs like Discovery Field Trips, the flagship program that has served over 85,000 students in the metro Birmingham area at no cost. Thanks to all of our volunteers for their selfless dedication and commitment to the mission, and vision of The Gardens. I can only wait with anticipation for what the potluck table will look like next year!

One of the oldest garden club yearbooks in the Archives is an 80-year old Home Garden Club yearbook from 1932. They were organized January 16, 1931 and the purpose of the club was to promote a greater love and understanding of gardens. The club was federated and associated with the Birmingham Chrysanthemum Show. According to their constitution, “The membership shall be limited to twenty. The dues shall be fifty cents a year. A fine of ten cents shall be imposed for tardiness, allowing ten minutes for differences in clocks. A fine of twenty-five cents shall be imposed for unexplained absences. Three unexplained absences from meetings shall be considered a forfeiture of membership.” We are actively collecting garden club yearbooks, and would love to see an even older yearbook than this if it is out there. Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Florida anise, Illcium floridanum, (left) is a mediumlarge shrub common to local gardens and landscapes. It is rhododendron-like in overall form and texture, but the flowers are dissimilar; the 2” wide, dark red, star-shaped blooms (effective late March to early-late April) hang hidden in dark foliage. They might be missed entirely if not for their fragrance. Kindly described as “interesting” (unkindly as “malodorous”), the scent has overtones of ammonia, characteristic of ancient plants that evolved before bees and flies, when beetles ruled. Similar aromatic compounds are found in carrion, rotting fruit, and these other beetle-pollinated plants, among the earliest derived flowering plants: sweet shrub, Calycanthus floridus; pawpaw, Asimina triloba; and Magnolia spp. Florida anise is not the only member of its genus to consider, but others – attractive and useful in their own right – suffer from consumer confusion and more limited availability. Ocala, or small anise, I. parviflorum, (right) is our other southeastern native, endemic to a limited area in central FL, unlike I. floridanum, which occurs from SW GA to SE LA. Both inhabit shady, swampy places, but small anise ventures into sandhills and exhibits much greater drought (and sun-) tolerance. “Small” refers to the ½” wide, scentless, yellow cups borne in May and June (July). Other differences between the two are, for Florida and small, respectively: dark green leaves with red petioles vs. olive green leaves with green petioles; youngest leaves perpendicular to the stem or droop slightly vs. point skyward showing their undersides; upright, multi-stemmed vs. rounded and suckering (thicket-forming) habit. We also grow three Asian species at BBG. Japanese anise, I. anisatum, has 1” wide yellow stars (similar to I. floridanum) in late winter, and glossy leaves with an undulating margin. Henry’s anise, I. henryi, (right) has 1” wide flowers (fewer petals than the previous) of pinkorange-red that dangle attractively on long, arching petioles, and lustrous dark green leaves. Lance-leafed anise, I. lanceolatum, is similar to I. henryi, perhaps more vigorous. All three are large-growing, primarily singlestemmed shrubs or small trees.

Garde ning Tips for March/April

All of the 40 or so anise species contain the aromatic compounds mentioned above, in flowers, leaves and stems; crushed leaves are pungently pleasant with notes of gin, licorice, citrus, and yes, a little ammonia, too. Leaves are seldom eaten by insects or white-tailed deer.

March FRUITS AND NUTS - Continue strawberry and grape plantings. Bud apples and peaches. Start planting blackberries. Remember, if weather conditions prevent prompt planting, heel the plants in by placing the root system in a trench and covering the soil. SHRUBS - Fertilize shrubs (except azaleas and camellias) according to a soil test. Late plantings may be made, particularly if they are container-grown. Watch shrubs for harmful insects. LAWNS - Plant bermuda, zoysia, and centipede in South Alabama. Seed bluegrass and grass mixtures in North Alabama. Fertilize established lawns. ROSES - Watch new growth for aphids. Begin a spray or dust program. Begin fertilizing. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS - Tender annuals may be planted in South Alabama. Check garden centers for bedding plants. BULBS - Plant gladiolus every two or three weeks if a long blooming season is desired. Plant tuberous begonias in pots. Plant dahlias. MISCELLANEOUS - Check and repair sprayers, dusters, and lawn mowers. Control lawn weeds with chemicals. Delay pruning of fruiting shrubs such as cotoneasters, pyracanthas, and hollies until after flowering. VEGETABLE SEEDS - Plant hardy crops recommended for January and February. After danger of frost is past, plant tender vegetables. VEGETABLE PLANTS – Plant cabbage, onions, lettuce, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts in North Alabama; plant tomatoes and peppers in lower South Alabama.

FRUITS AND NUTS - Season for strawberry planting continues. Start spray program for all fruits. Plant raspberries and blackberries and continue budding apples and peaches. SHRUBS - Prune spring flowering shrubs after flowering. Fertilize azaleas and camellias. When new growth is half completed, spray all shrubs with a fungicide. LAWNS - Planting continues. New lawns may need supplementary watering. Also, fertilize at 3- to 6-week intervals. Keep ryegrass cut low, particularly if over planted on bermuda lawns. ROSES - Watch for insects and diseases. Keep old flower heads removed. Plant container-grown plants from nurseries or garden centers. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS - Plant early started annuals or bedding plants from nurseries or garden centers. Divide mums or root cuttings. Dig and divide dahlias. BULBS - Plant gladiolus, fancyleaved caladiums, milk and wine lilies, and ginger and gloriosa lilies. Feed bearded iris with superphosphate and spray for borers. Avoid cutting foliage of narcissus or other bulbs until it has turned brown naturally. MISCELLANEOUS - Spray camellias, hollies, etc., for scale insects. Carefully water new plantings of shrubs and trees. Pinching out tips of new shoots promotes more compact shrubs.

Member's Day Trip Lake Martin May 11, 2012

Join us for a Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens Day Trip to Jim Scott’s garden on Lake Martin. Lunch will be served at the SpringHouse restaurant, with an afternoon wine tasting and tour at Morgan Creek Vineyards. The cost of the trip is $75 per person, which includes Charter Bus transportation, special tour of the Jim Scott’s private garden, lunch at the SpringHouse, and a private tour of Morgan Creek Vineyards and wine tasting.
