Thank you for your support of The Friends and your patronage of our Spring Plant Sale. I wish I could say I’ve planted all of my purchases, but I’ll make a confession: sometimes I buy a plant without knowing exactly where I’ll plant it. I buy it because I like it and believe I will find a place. Occasionally, the place isn’t right for the plant and occasionally I forget a crucial period of watering before planting (or after). The result is the same – a dead plant. This fits within the definition of gardening, but only if you learn from your mistakes, right? Well, I think it’s okay to buy a plant on impulse; to me it’s a harmless and relatively inexpensive way to practice a little indulgence!

I’m looking forward to heading south to see Jim Scott’s garden with a full bus of The Gardens’ members later this month and then heading (way) north on our garden tour of Newport, RI, in June. Like all of our trips, these always fill to capacity very quickly. Stay tuned for future trip announcements – there’s no better way to spend time with other gardeners and The Gardens’ supporters than by enjoying the fruit of others’ labor! Seriously, these trips are not possible without the help of the garden-makers and the local hosts, and we are grateful for all their efforts and assistance.

In this issue, be sure to get more details on Earth Day at The Gardens and the return of Glorious Gardens. The first is our annual gathering of local environmental groups and the second, our peek “behind the hedges” at the area’s best private gardens. Earth Day at The Gardens May 5, 2012 11-4 p.m. Free Admission

Alabama’s longest continually-running Earth Day event brings education to life with unique, educational activities for kids, families and the young at heart. Displays of dozens of local and regional organizations advocating water, air and land conservation, wildlife protection, energy efficiency, recycling, and healthful, sustainable living will fill the lawn of the Hill Garden in front of the Conservatory with fun-filled, family-focused activities. The purpose of Earth Day at The Gardens is to promote awareness, understanding and dialogue for solutions to environmental issues. It is a participatory approach to creating new ideas for resolving issues that range in scope from local to global. It’s also fun! At the entrance, used electronic devices may be dropped off for recycling. Admission is free. Music will be provided by the Oxymorons. Popcorn and ice water are provided throughout the day at no charge. The newest garden, the Arrington Plant Adventure Zone, will be open to the public for the first time.

When Gail and Marvin Snyder retired to Birmingham, one of the first things they did was join Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Moving often for their active careers, they would visit the local botanical garden whenever they relocated to familiarize themselves with the area and to get help with their new yard. Botanical gardens became a habit! Since arriving in Alabama, Gail has “gone native.” She loves the “wonderful learning experiences” available at The Gardens and is volunteering with curator John Manion in the Kaul Wildflower Garden and working with The Gardens Native Plant group in the potting shed. She recently completed the requirements for her Certification in Native Plant Studies. Last summer, Gail and Marvin saw firsthand the withering effects of Alabama’s heat and drought. They were surprised to find that most of our gardens, including the Kaul Wildflower Garden, had no irrigation system. They approached John and said, “We’ll contribute some funds to kick start raising the money needed.” Their seed gift launched a year-long planning and installation process that resulted in the new watering system for the wildflower garden. (The balance came from the Lucille S. Beeson Charitable Trust, managed by Regions Trust.) Our thanks to Gail and Marvin for seeing a need and acting on it. Their concern and generosity has made a huge difference. Go up and see for yourself in the Kaul Wildflower Garden!

Library Director Hope Long has become the newest member of The Gardens’ Perennial Society. This doesn’t mean that she is potting up perennials for the Fall Plant Sale—that is handled by the F.B.I. (Fay Belt Ireland) Perennial Group volunteers. (If Hope was potting anything it would be hydrangeas, a passion developed when she previously worked at Aldridge Botanical Gardens.) Rather, Hope shared that she has included The Gardens in her will. As a member of the Perennial Society, the group of forward-thinking individuals who make a planned gift or endowment gift to The Gardens, Hope receives invitations to special gatherings and our Perennial Society newsletter. She is, in fact, profiled in the spring issue. When offered life insurance in a new employee benefits package, Hope, 44, was spurred to do some long range planning. She realized that The Friends could be the beneficiary of the policy, so she chose to leave a percentage of her estate to The Gardens. Inspired by our founding librarian Ida C. Burns, Hope wants her planned gift to help endow the library director’s position, so that the Library at Birmingham Botanical Gardens will always be able to attract talented staff.

Hope loves her job and The Gardens. “In my ninth year, it is still as much fun as it was the first day.” We thank her for her vision, her dedication and her unconventional approach to library science!

Volunteer Spotlight: Anatomy of a Plant Sale Taylor Steele, Volunteer Coordinator

The Spring Plant Sale, known prior to 2005 as Spring Fiesta; has been marked on member’s calendars for over forty years. This year was no different, only the venue. Each year over seven thousand patrons purchase a variety of more than 100,000 plants made available during the four-day plant sale. I cannot think of anywhere else in Birmingham that you can find that many plants at one place, at one time. Just the sight of a “sea of green” is a wondrous and exciting vision.

Truly, plants are the stars of the fourday event, but if you want to know who are the best supporting actors and actresses, you need look no further than the volunteers that make this event happen. Long before the doors open Thursday evening of the members-only sale, hundreds of hours of planning, preparing, and potting have taken place. Plant groups and societies that work the sale create a small army of plant experts aiding and assisting sale patrons with tips on planting, watering, fertilizing and growing everything from ‘Cherokee Purple’ tomatoes to this year’s signature plant, a Cleome hybrid called, ‘Senorita Rosalita.’ Since this was my first plant sale as a staff member, I thought it was fitting to submit an article for The Garden Dirt that gives more insight about the people who truly make the Spring Plant Sale a reality. I gave each of the plant group and society chairs questions that focused on the human element of the sale, rather than just the plants. Here are some of their responses:

How would you describe your plant group volunteers? We have a dedicated bunch and many of them try to attend our Wednesday work sessions every week. They are very interested in plants and gardening, in helping raise money for The Gardens, and are committed to educating the public about the value and beauty of native plants. Betsy Fleenor, Native Plant Group Describe your plant group’s work timeline leading up to the Spring Plant Sale? Many hours go into the planning to solicit volunteers and deciding who is strong at what task. We have to decide where we will be ordering plants and what plants we will be ordering, remembering what sold last year and what did not; is there any plant request and is there any new and hot plant the on the market that everyone must have… Earley Watson, Tropicals Group How many years has your plant group been involved with the Spring Plant Sale? The Perennial Group is one of the original plant groups and has been a part of the Spring Sale since its inception. The group has been in existence for over 40 years. The group adopted a new name in 2009 in honor of its founder and faithful supporter of the Gardens, Fay B. Ireland. Fay would always tag her seed trays with her initials “FBI” and it became a legend as her seed trays always started perfectly while others “not so much.” As a tribute and as horticultural good luck we go by her initials, “FBI Perennial Group.” The Perennial Group (specifically Fay Ireland) started the Fall Sale to encourage the planting of perennials in the fall for best spring bloom. The Birmingham Fern Society’s mission is to educate people about ferns and how to use them in their landscape. Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

In the 2008 issue of The Garden Dirt, I reported on the success of a “laceleaf ” cultivar of American elderberry, Sambucus canadensis ‘Acutiloba.’ The variegated, and purple- and yellow-foliaged selections of European elderberries, from their native species. S. nigra and S. racemosa, are knocked senseless by our heat, but the American species grows spontaneously (i.e., we didn’t plant it) here at The Gardens. I also mentioned our desire to trial another cultivar of the American species, ‘Aurea,’ the only known yellow-foliaged cultivar. As an update, ‘Aurea’ has now been growing happily alongside Sonat Lake at our entrance for three growing seasons. New foliage is screaming chartreuse through late May (above), before calming down to a medium yellow-green in June. Flowers (white) and fruit (black, quickly taken by birds) are typical for the species. Fall color is a weak yellow. Following site preferences for this species, it receives full sun, and the soil is moist. The species wilts and tatters in drier soils and in shade the species is especially leggy, so moisture is critical and hard, late-winter pruning (sometimes called pleaching or stooling) is recommended to keep the plant relatively compact. Growth habit when the plant is treated this way can be described as multi-stemmed, upright and irregularly spreading. Sambucus flowers on new wood, so the bloom cycle is not interrupted by winter pruning.

Garde ning Tips for March/April

Another plant at our entrance that receives lots of comments is a weeping specimen of Chinese hackberry, Celtis sinensis ‘Green Cascade.’ Planted in 2004 from a 1-gallon container into moist soil and full sun, it has grown surprisingly fast, even for a hackberry, and now measures 7’ tall and over 25’ wide (top left). The cultivar name is quite apt as the plant has become a dramatic, curvaceous living sculpture, widely-spreading with arching and – yes – cascading tiers of branches. Leaf color is rich bright green in spring and lustrous dark green in summer (center left). By late summer, a nonfatal leaf spot disease appears and some leaves will drop as a result; these are minor maladies but warrant siting considerations. Fall color is green-yellow and the leaves drop relatively early, revealing the sweeping branch structure (bottom right) during the dormant season.

May FRUITS AND NUTS – Continue spray program. Keep grass from around trees and strawberries. Peaches and apples can still be budded. SHRUBS – Newly planted shrubs need extra care now and in coming weeks. Don’t spray with oil emulsions when temperature is above 85 °F. LAWNS – Now is the best time to start lawns from seed. Water new lawns as needed to prevent drying. Keep established lawns actively growing by watering fertilizing and mowing. Spray weeds in lawns with proper herbicide. ROSES – Spray or dust for insects and diseases. Fertilize monthly with complete fertilizer or rose special. Container-grown plants in flower may be planted. Prune climbing roses after the first big flush offlowering. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Late plantings of bedding plants still have time to produce. Watch for insects on day lilies. BULBS – Summer bulbs started in containers may still be planted. Do not remove foliage from spring flowering bulbs. Do not let seedheads form on tulips and other spring flowering bulbs. MISCELLANEOUS – Mulch new shrub plantings if not already done. Avoid drying out new shrub, tree and lawn plantings. VEGETABLE SEED – Plant heatloving and tender vegetables. Start cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and celery in coldframe for fall garden. VEGETABLE PLANTS – Plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and sweet potatoes.

June FRUITS AND NUTS – Layer grapes and continue spray programs. Thin apples and peaches if too thick. SHRUBS – Lace bugs may be a problem on azaleas, pyracanthas, dogwoods, cherry laurels, and other shrubs. Water as needed. Fertilize now. Keep long shoots from developing by pinching out tips. Good time to take cuttings from semi-mature wood for rooting.
