Plant blindness is the inability to see or notice the plants in one's own environment. Obviously, plants are more than mere backdrop for the activities of animals, but apparently as animals ourselves, we are keyed into the mobility of other animals. It seems that plants live too slowly to jump out and command our attention. However, in late winter and early spring, plant life moves at a pace that even the most inattentive person notices. Who doesn’t realize leaves are reappearing? To me, it’s about looking closely. So I tend to think about details at this time of year as our growing season begins. The Latin phrase tempus fugit translates loosely as “time’s a wastin’.” It’s a quote from Virgil, in context, “…time flees irretrievably, while we wander around, prisoners of our love of detail.” I am such a prisoner, and am duly warned to not forget the big picture. Consider that we live in the midst of one of the most extraordinary processes in nature, the emergence from dormancy of countless millions of living plants which yearly jump-start their life cycle. The picture doesn’t get much bigger than that – you can measure the south-to-north wave of greening with satellite imagery. But you can also watch it in your own garden, up close and personal (but you need to look and you need to be timely or you’ll miss it). In the coming months, we will be unveiling our new Strategic Plan, facilitated by Clarus Consulting Group, and conceived to go handin-glove with our new Master Plan. Both are big-picture oriented, as they ought to be, but they cannot be achieved without addressing the details, which are the myriad things we do every day. With the broad strokes in place to align the day-to-day, we think we’ve got big and small properly balanced. Please let us know how you think we’re doing.

More than 400 people attended the exclusive, blacktie affair which featured an Asianinspired menu provided by Kathy G. Will and Sarah Mason and the John Williams Band provided the evening's soundtrack at the private Men's Committee party and in the Rushton Garden, respectively. Volunteer Spotlight: Reid Pearlman How did you become interested in working with the Bonsai group? Volunteering in the Japanese Gardens? I have never seen anything like the Japanese Gardens before. I found it unique and interesting. What do you think makes a person a good volunteer? Being hardworking and willing to learn. How did you become interested in cultivating bonsai trees? Dr. Bob Wendorf introduced me to bonsai. Since then, they have fascinated me. Where do you see yourself volunteering with the Japanese Gardens and the Bonsai Group? Are you interested in working with any other plant group or society? I see myself trying to help make The Gardens the best that they can be. Do you feel it is important for your generation to volunteer? Why? Yes. We want to give something back to the great country that has been so generous to us. What are your academic and/or career goals once you graduate high school? I plan on attending college and then graduate school. I have many interests including botany, ichthyology and zoology. What attracts you to working/volunteering at Birmingham Botanical Gardens? The thing that I find most attractive about The Gardens is interacting with all of the knowledgeable people.

Reid Pearlman is a sophomore at Vestavia Hills High School. He volunteers in the Japanese Gardens with John Floyd, Mike Rushing and Bob Wendorf. Reid is one of the many young people that choose to take advantage of unique educational opportunities at The Gardens, while helping maintain its beauty. Above, he is front and center, surrounded by the three doctors and the crew that helps maintain the Japanese Gardens.

Do you volunteer with any other organization? Not at this time. What is important to you as a volunteer at The Gardens? What do you see as the result of your volunteering? As a volunteer, I have been able to learn a great deal about plants, both local and foreign. I have been privileged to be educated by some of the most knowledgeable people in the field of botany. Is there anything else youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like us to know about your experience working and volunteering at The Gardens? I am looking forward to doing it more in the future.

Welcome Taylor Steele The Friends would like to welcome Taylor Steele as the new volunteer coordinator. Taylor comes to us from the Southern Environmental Center at Birmingham-Southern College where he was the resident manager for Turkey Creek Nature Preserve for three years. Before that he was the Director of Science Education for 5 years at Cornerstone Schools of Alabama. In addition, he previously worked at McWane Science Center with the GLOBE Program as the Environmental Science Coordinator. Taylor was also a naturalist with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources State Parks Division. He has an academic background in Environmental/Conservation Studies from University of Alabama at Birmingham. Taylor resides in the city of Columbiana, Alabama with his wife, three dogs and a cat. Archives & Rare Book Room "Our Native Ferns; or a History of the British Species and Their Varieties" by Edward Joseph Lowe was written in 1865. This 146 year old two volume set was donated to the Library Archives by Dr. Hughes Kennedy. It features beautifully illustrated hand colored engravings of ferns complete with descriptions. A renowned and oft published English botanist, Lowe's interest in ferns led to his studies and paintings. Lowe was most noted for "Ferns: British and Exotic," eight illustrated volumes published in London by Groombridge and Sons in 1856. This recent donation is just one of many rare and interesting pieces that can be found in the Archives & Rare Book Room at The Library at The Gardens, our hidden educational gem. Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Few plants evoke an Asian aesthetic like bamboo. However, running (monopodial) species can be very aggressive spreaders. Understandably, many people consider them invasive exotic plants, although river cane, Arundinaria gigantea, and its relatives are important plants in their SE US native ecosystem. Clumping, or sympodial, bamboo species offer a guarantee of self-restraint. Despite the ability of their basal clump to reach 5-6’ wide and more over time, have no fear, the plants are genetically incapable of running. However, they have not been widely used in our area, perhaps because some clumpers exhibit borderline cold or heat tolerance, or because runners are easier to propagate. Maybe it’s disbelief – those who have experienced the tenacity of the monopodial species mistakenly think that all bamboos are noxious pests. We grow several types of sympodial bamboo at The Gardens, primarily cultivars of Bambusa multiplex, hedge bamboo, from China. As the name suggests, its growth habit lends to clipping as a hedge. Over the past 8 years, our earliest plant-outs of ‘Rivieriorum,’ considered the hardiest form, have formed well-behaved, dense, graceful, finely-textured and fountain-like evergreen clumps ~10’ tall and wide (left); the basal clumps of emergent shoots are ~36” wide. They have withstood heat, humidity and drought with total aplomb, as well as a brief flirtation with single-digit lows with minimal aboveground injury. On hedge bamboo, new culms (individual grass stalks) arise through the growing season, primarily late springearly summer. Height increases gradually (up to 18’ in our area) as the clump matures; growth is slow compared to monopodial species. Leaves (secondary growth) are produced after maximum culm height is reached each year but late-season culms may not produce secondary growth until the following year. After leaves are produced individual culms cease all growth, and live 3-7 years. Clumps can be attractively thinned by removing individual culms, or completely renewed to the ground in late winter before new growth ensues.

‘Alphonse Karr’ sports attractive gold culms streaked with green. Leaves are larger than ‘Rivieriorum’ but suffer complete injury at ~15ºF (above), necessitating renewal pruning. ‘Fernleaf,’ as supplied to us (right), appears very similar to ‘Rivieriorum,’ perhaps with slightly less stem hardiness. We’re also growing Borinda boleana and Fargesia spp.; time will tell if these clumping species also have potential.

January FRUITS AND NUTS - Set out apples, peaches, pears, and grapes. Start grafting pecans. Prune dormant trees. SHRUBS - Plant shrubs and trees, including broadleaf, narrowleaf, and deciduous. Graft camellias in South Alabama. Spray all deciduous shrubbery with a dormant spray to control diseases and insects. Spray when weather is on warming trend. LAWNS - Soil test before setting up fertility program. ROSES - Visit nurseries and garden centers to select varieties. Start planting. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS - Plant hardy annuals. BULBS - Late plantings of Dutch bulbs will flower if planted now. Lilies of all types, except Madonna, may be planted. Check stored bulbs and discard rotten ones. Make indoor plantings of amaryllis, callas, and gloxinias. MISCELLANEOUS - Prune winterdamaged limbs. Give houseplants a bath in lukewarm water to remove dust. To keep poinsettias that have finished flowering, turn pots on their sides and let them dry completely Cut them back lightly Keep in a temperature of 55 to 60 °. VEGETABLE SEED - Plant hardy vegetables, root crops, roots, and tubers in southern-most areas. Plant lettuce, cabbage, and broccoli in coldframes. VEGETABLE PLANTS - Set out cabbage plants.

FRUITS AND NUTS - Planting season continues for dormant trees. Fertilize fruit trees. Apply half of the fertilizer recommended for grapes now; apply the other half soon after fruit sets. Continue dormant pruning & grafting. Start strawberry plantings. SHRUBS - Planting season continues. Visit camellia shows to learn of hardy varieties in your area. Graft camellias in Central & South Alabama. Spray all shrubs with a fungicide before new growth starts. Good time to prune all shrubs before new growth starts. Don’t prune earlyblooming species because flower buds will be removed. ROSES - Prune hybrid tea roses in South Alabama; delay pruning for a few weeks in North Alabama. Continue planting. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS Replant early plantings of hardy annuals. Prepare beds for summer annuals. BULBS - Plant cannas, amaryllis, gladiolus, & zephyranthes in South Alabama; delay planting for a few weeks in North Alabama. MISCELLANEOUS - Houseplants are beginning to show signs of activity. Fertilize with liquid or soluble fertilizer according to manufacturer’s directions. Remember Valentine’s Day; Why not send roses or a potted plant? VEGETABLE SEED - Plant some vegetables listed for January in Central Alabama plus collards, salsify, & Swiss chard. Add tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cauliflower, & Brussels sprouts to coldframes. VEGETABLE PLANTS-Plant cabbage, onions, lettuce, broccoli, & Brussels sprouts.

The 14th annual Spencer Lecture will be held on Thursday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Linn-Henley Lecture Hall. This free annual event brings awardwinning and New York Times best selling author Andrea Wulf to Birmingham Botanical Gardens for an intriguing talk titled “Founding Gardeners. The Revolutionary Generation, Nature, and the Shaping of the American Nation.” This beautifully illustrated talk looks at the lives of the founding fathers and how their attitude, toward plants, gardens, nature and agriculture shaped the American nation. In a unique retelling of the creation of America, Wulf will show how plants, politics and personalities intertwined as never before. Guests will have a chance to meet Ms. Wulf at a reception where she will also be signing copies of her books, including Founding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation, Nature and the Shaping of the American Nation. Andrea Wulf was born in India & moved to Germany as a child. She trained as a design historian at Royal College of Art and is the author of the New York Times best-seller The Founding Gardeners as well as of The Brother Gardeners (long-listed for the Samuel Johnson Prize 2008 and winner of the American Horticultural Society 2010 Book Award) and the co-author (with Emma Gieben-Gamal) of This Other Eden: Seven Great Gardens and 300 Years of English History. She has written for The Sunday Times, the Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, The Garden, and regularly reviews for several newspapers, including the Times Literary Supplement, The Guardian and The New York Times. She lives in London.
