Dear Friends: Even though the days started getting shorter in June, somehow it doesn’t seem noticeable until about the middle of September, well after the kids have returned to school. Now, we’re barreling headlong toward the shortest of days, 21 December, when the sun, at its lowest angle, only stays on the job for 9:56. Somehow, we’re either going to work, or coming home from work, in the dark, maybe both. It makes gardening on a “work day” difficult (unless you’ve got a miner’s lamp, I guess). So we cram in what we can over the weekend, and it just doesn’t seem fair that now that the weather is amenable to outdoor work – and wearing wool sweaters – the light is so limited. Soil preparation, dividing, planting, fertilizing, raking leaves, turning the compost, the timing is so right for all of this, but we can’t get too waylaid with any one project. We do some of each thing on our list, to try to spread out the day, just enough of each thing we planned to get the satisfaction of multi-tasking. Before we know it, the sun has slipped away and we can concentrate on making a new list. For tomorrow. Or next weekend. Or next year. As the year winds down, all of us here at The Gardens want to thank our donors, members and volunteers for the success of our fall events, and, similarly, for all our programs and activities throughout the past year. Our strength is rooted in the individuals, businesses, foundations and communities that support us, and year after year they make it possible to deliver our mission of educating people about plants, gardens and the environment. Wishing you and yours a safe and healthy season,
Fred Spicer Executive Director

Before 2009 Slips Away…
The year 2009 will soon be history, but there is still time to take steps and implement plans that will make life better for you and others in the future and that can directly benefit The Gardens. 1. Review your estate plans. Changes in your family situation and in the value of your stocks and real estate may require revisions to your will, living trust or beneficiary designations on life insurance, IRAs and other arrangements. Consider a bequest to Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens to help ensure that The Gardens and its educational programs will thrive for years to come. Those who make planned gifts to The Gardens become members of our Perennial Society.

Sound Strategies for Year-End Giving: 1. Write a check to Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Every dollar of your contribution will be tax-deductible, if you itemize your deductions, up to 50% of your gross income. And every dollar will help The Gardens stay green and continue to teach people about plants, nature and the environment. 2. Sell stocks that have decreased in value and contribute the proceeds to Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. You’ll create both a capital loss deduction and a charitable deduction that benefits the whole community. 3. Contribute stocks that have increased in value. You’ll avoid all capital gains taxes and can deduct your cost plus all appreciation if you have owned the stocks for more than one year…and you will help The Gardens. 4. Give a life insurance policy that is no longer needed for family security, but will help to secure the future of The Gardens. 5. If you are over age 70 ½, ask your IRA custodian to make a tax-free “qualified charitable distribution” to Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. You will be a friend indeed!
2. Add to your retirement nest egg. If you have an IRA, 401(k) plan or other retirement account, contribute the maximum allowable before year’s end ($16,500 for a 401 (k) plan, plus a catch-up amount of $5,500 for workers over age 50). If your employer matches part of your savings, pay at least that amount before year’s end. 3. Fine-tune your portfolio. Consider selling securities that have gone down in value and use your capital losses to offset any capital gains from the sale of profitable investments. Losses that don’t offset gains can be deducted against ordinary income up to $3,000, and excess losses can be deducted in future years. Wait at least 30 days before buying back stock or your deduction will be postponed. 4. Make a gift to Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Your gift is needed now, more than ever before, and a charitable deduction will reduce your 2009 taxes if you itemize. (See right).

Opening Reception for McGinnis Leathers Friday, November 6 5:30-7:30 p.m. The Library at Birmingham Botanical Gardens “With age comes the mundane responsibility of the day-to-day that we all become entrenched in. When I finally took a look at what was happening, I noticed that I was only photographing when I was traveling and that my travels were becoming more and more infrequent. Realizing the need to pick up the camera with no trips on the horizon, I spent $499 on the best lens I have ever purchased, a 105 micro (a fixed focal length lens with a very shallow depth of field). It was like a new passport and a ticket around the world. I began to take small journeys more frequently – journeys into the depths of the simple things around me: bugs, creatures and flowers. In these works, one can see the beginnings of my travels into each exotic blossom and, hopefully, the moment of enlightenment that all seasoned travelers experience when exploring a new place for the first time.” — McGinnis Leathers

We are excited to announce a new addition to our Library Archives and Rare Book Room. Dr. Bayard Tynes has donated an historic two volume set entitled American Medicinal Plants: An Illustrated and Descriptive Guide to the American Plants Used as Homeopathic Remedies: Their History, Preparation, Chemistry and Physiological Effects, by Charles F. Millspaugh. Millspaugh (1854-1923) was a physician and academic who headed the botany department at West Virginia University and was curator of botany at the Field Museum in Chicago. Widely regarded as the definitive study of American indigenous and naturalized plants of the 19th century. The Gardens has also received the bequest of the horticultural library of Carolyn Dickerson Tynes, Dr. Tynes’ wife. Carolyn, a gifted garden designer who created the Hess Camelia Garden and helped design the Thompson Enthusiast Garden and the Bruno Vegetable Garden, chose this way to share her love of gardening with the public. She will be honored as a member of our Perennial Society.

The Library is in need of volunteers! Knowledge of plants is not required, but you do need to be comfortable working on a computer. Master Gardeners can use the time spent volunteering in the library to meet yearly requirements. We have the following shifts open: Monday from 9-1 p.m. Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. 1st Saturday from 1-4 p.m. 3rd Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. 5th Saturday from 9-1 p.m. 2nd Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Please call Elizabeth Drewry 205.414.3932, edrewry@bbgardens.org or Jason Kirby 205.414.3967, jkirby@bbgardens.org for more information.
As of October 1, 2009, the out-of -county fee for a library card will be $50. In the past this fee has been waived for city employees, people working in Jefferson County and members of The Gardens; because the Jefferson County Commission partially cut funding to the Jefferson County Library Cooperative we will no longer be able to waive this fee. If you are a current member of The Gardens, we will still waive $35 of the fee but you will be required to pay $15, which will be sent to the JCLC. Please have your membership card with you when you renew your library card. Please remember this is a yearly fee and you will be required to pay this fee annually when you renew your library card. Good Things Growing… In The Gardens
Garde ning Tips for November & December Courtesy of
Parrotia persica, parrotia or Persian ironwood, is an unfamiliar tree to most gardeners. It suffers – many great plants do – from relative anonymity because it lacks a singular feature such as an exuberant flowers, cherry-red berries, or screaming fall color. Its charms may be too subtle for many to notice. Parrotia’s red flowers are borne in late winter, but are small, odorless and apetalous, unlike their cousins’ the witchhazels. The “showy’ parts are the ¼” long stamens, interesting up close, but virtually invisible when compared to camellias, which flower at the same time. Fruits are small brown capsules, ornamentally unimportant.

November • SHRUBS – Plant Shrubs, trees, and vines.
• LAWNS – Some owners like lawn paints. Have you thought about having a green lawn this winter? Use proper herbicide to kill germinating winter weeds. • ROSES – Get rose plantings underway. Use a soil test as a basis for fertilization. Look for new varieties. Parrotia persica, next to the Crape Myrtle Garden, with

Reddish tones are apparent at leaf-out. With cooler weather, shades of purple and burgundy begin to dominate, eventually giving way to orange and yellow; leaves hold late into the season, a few (brown and crispy) remain on the tree through winter. Since most are seed-grown, the fall color is variable but usually very nice. In a nursery, next to glowing autumn stars like Japanese maples, parrotia would likely seem unremarkable. In youth, parrotia shows an upright habit, typically Fall color of parrotia shows lots of orange and yellow single-trunked but with several to numerous tones in this late November image. sinuous leaders. With age, strong horizontal side branches develop, creating a habit that is about as wide as high (to about 40’ after 25 years). It is easily pruned up in youth to allow under-planting or headroom (‘Vanessa’ is reliably narrow). Noble old specimens (60’+) develop amazing character as the upright branches often fuse together (inosculate) and the bark exfoliates in jigsaw-puzzle fashion. Alas, this requires time; it’s not instantly gratifying like a river birch. Parrotia is tough, pest-free and undemanding, tolerating heat, humidity, dry urban soils and sunny, exposed conditions with aplomb. With its understated beauty, it will (sadly) never be a popular plant. But it is magnificent, nevertheless, and deserves wider use. For more information on Parrotia persica, please go to www.bbgardens.org. The short trunk and numerous, sinuous, upright branches are typical for this species.

• ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Plant hardy annuals such as larkspur, poppies, pansies, anchusa, and candytuft. Get sweet peas into the ground. • BULBS – Continue spring bulb planting. Put lilies of the valley in a shady place. • MISCELLANEOUS – Plant screen plantings for privacy on the patio. • VEGETABLE SEED – Plant cabbage and lettuce in the coldframe.
December • SHRUBS – Planting is still the main activity but delay in case of freezing weather. • LAWNS – Control wild garlic, chickweed, Poa annua, dandelion, and other weeds. Read label on each can of weed killer used. • ROSES – Add plants to rose garden. Mulch all plantings. • ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Plant hardy annual seed without delay. Have you tried violas? • BULBS – Continue spring bulb planting. • MISCELLANEOUS – Shrubs, trees, and indoor plants make excellent holiday gifts.
