Dear Garden Supporter,

Welcome to

Birmingham Botanical gardens Dear Friends: Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a highly successful public/private partnership between Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the City of Birmingham. For more than 50 years, we have been jointly committed to our community and to preserving and enhancing one of Alabama’s most beautiful and inspirational public institutions. Your support of Antiques at The Gardens, our largest fundraiser, is critical to our mission of educating people about plants, gardens and the environment. We depend on private funding such as philanthropic gifts and memberships, and revenue from plant sales and events like this one to deliver strong, science-based education programs to young and old alike, all year, every year. This is our eleventh year to host Antiques at The Gardens. Chairs Ragan Cain and Cathy Luckie have continued the high standards set by previous chairs to make this show and sale unique in Birmingham and beyond. We hope that among the lectures, the Gala, the show and the shopping you will learn more about The Gardens and enjoy the appreciation that so many of us have for what is truly one of our city’s greatest assets. Please enjoy the 2016 Antiques at The Gardens show and sale! And after the show, please come visit your Gardens. Yours very truly,

As Mayor of the City of Birmingham and friend of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, I am pleased to offer my support for the Antiques at The Gardens event. Antiques at The Gardens not only increases tourism, but provides educational opportunities for our school children and horticulture and landscape architecture students. This show further beautifies Birmingham Botanical Gardens and it provides a variety of antiques to be enjoyed by all who attend. The ongoing efforts of this show have played a vital role in the growth and development of our City’s progress as we work to build a better Birmingham. As Mayor, I am appreciative of your efforts, and pleased to encourage and support the Antiques at The Gardens event. Sincerely,

Brian Barr Chairman

Honoring Frances & Miller Gorrie

F

riends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is pleased to recognize Frances and Miller Gorrie as honorees of the 2016 Antiques at The Gardens. Their long-standing relationship with The Gardens began upon their return to the Magic City following Miller’s military service.

In 1964 after spending three years with the Civil Engineer Corps in the Navy and completing his civil engineering degree at Auburn University, Miller Gorrie purchased Thomas Brasfield Co. Under Miller’s leadership, the company built many iconic structures across the Southeast: the Georgia Dome and the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta and the 30-story “Batman building” in Nashville among them. Closer to home, the company made a huge impact on Birmingham’s skyline completing Regions’ Harbert Tower, the Kirklin Clinic, Hugo Black Courthouse and McWane Science Center. At The Gardens, we are especially proud of Brasfield & Gorrie’s construction of the Mary M. Blount Education Complex at the Garden Center. Completed in 1998, that project included the addition of the Linn-Henley Lecture Hall, the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens offices, the Hanna Center and The Library at The Gardens. In 1975, Brasfield & Gorrie established the Torri Gate as it is seen today. Frances Gorrie worked closely with Bob Moody and Mary Carolyn Cleveland (formerly Boothby) during the 1988 additions to The Gardens. Those additions include three meeting rooms, an orientation room, and the space that would later become The Gardens Café by Kathy G. A catering kitchen and new lobby were also added. Much of the Garden Center as it appears today was influenced by Frances’s imagination. Two of the tapestries that she used to accent the interior remain in place today. Frances also took an active role by interacting with the visitors to The Gardens. From the time it moved inside the Garden Center in 1989 until 1997, Frances was an integral part of the day to day operations of the Gatehouse Gift Shop. She joined Philippa Bainbridge, Mary Bledsoe, Louise Walton and others on many trips to market to broaden the scope of saleable items. The shop was manned exclusively by volunteers, and Frances dedicated much of her week to its operation. Upon departure from her active involvement at The Gardens, she opened her own retail store named Blackjack Gardens located in a new building adjacent to the Gorrie family farm. As her business grew and expanded, Frances filled show rooms with an outstanding selection of outdoor furniture.

The Gorries have offered generous donations to The Gardens over the last 30 years. Their contributions have allowed for many of The Gardens’ construction projects to be completed. They have also generously supported Antiques at The Gardens for each of its 11 years. Additionally, the Gorries offered financial support for an early Master Plan, a blueprint that laid the foundation for what The Gardens has become. Frances and Miller, who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary next year, have three children: Jim, who has taken on the role of chief executive officer, Ellen, who now runs the day-to-day operations of Blackjack Farms and John Miller, an accomplished artist. Thanks to the leadership and generosity of supporters like the Gorrie family The Gardens has become a treasured community asset offering free admission to 350,000 visitors each year and annually providing free science field trips to more than 10,000 Birmingham area schoolchildren. For their generous financial contributions and their selfless gift of service, we are deeply appreciative and gratefully acknowledge Frances & Miller Gorrie as our 2016 Antiques at The Gardens honorees.

Jeffrey Bilhuber

J

effrey Bilhuber is one of the nation’s most respected interior designers. He shares his design prowess through his firm, Bilhuber and Associates, which is based in New York City. He has authored four highly acclaimed books, all published through Rizzoli: Jeffrey Bilhuber’s Design Basics, Defining Luxury: The Qualities of Life at Home and The Way Home: Reflections of American Beauty. His latest is American Master: Notes on Style and Substance. His clients have included: Vogue, 70 Park Avenue Hotel, City Club Hotel, Ariel Sands Resort for Michael Douglas, Conde Nast Publications and Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann. Before visiting The Gardens for the Red Diamond Lecture Series, he reflected on his career and shared more about his style and inspiration. What can we expect from your latest book, American Master? It is the latest and the greatest! It’s the fourth book. I’m not sure how many other designers have it in them to put more than one book out, but I’ve been very fruitful in managing to get a new book out every three years. Because I’m trying to articulate changes in market or the mood in the country, the evolution of personal style. I’m proud that I have four books, but I’m very pleased that with each cycle, I’m able to continue to show my logical evolution and that of the clients and consumers that surround us. At this point in my career, I’ve had the chance to realize it’s a very, very difficult industry to succeed in. And once you’ve succeeded, it’s even more difficult to stay at the top of your profession. I succeeded early on – within the first few years of founding this company, I rose to the top of the profession and garnered a lot of attention. Through talent and grit, I’ve managed to stay there. American Master is the proverbial pat on the back of doing my job very, very well and realizing that I am at the top of my game at this point. And it’s been well earned. You’re going to see projects that represent the best of my career to date, but it’s balanced with 30 signature statements that are the bedrock principles that have defined my design process. It’s not just an overview of recently completed projects, but it’s the foundations of what makes all of these projects work – the takeaway information for the reader is to be an informed audience and consumer. These 30 principles distill the process, just how much effort it takes to get rooms to a point where they are appropriate, invigorating, creatively stimulating and balanced. Mariska Hargitay wrote the foreword on the new book. What can you tell me about the projects that you’ve worked on with her? I believe that I’ve worked on six projects with Mariska. She’s a fan, and she’s very loyal. She understands the creative process intensely, just given her craft. And she can read my shorthand. She understands that creativity and business go together. You write a book and you think, “Who is it that should set the stage with a foreword? Who understands the message best of all of your current clients?” Anna Wintour was delighted to write the foreword to the first book. We were deeply immersed with her at the time at Conde Nast and Vogue offices and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and her houses through the city and the country. And over the last three years, Mariska has also become a very important aspect of our company and a huge supporter. How did you begin your work with Vogue? That was through Anna. She was interviewing interior designers to redecorate the offices at Vogue. It was a bit of a cattle call early in my career, and I was flattered that Anna Wintour wanted to meet with me about the offices at Vogue in the Conde Nast building. I skipped in proudly with my portfolio in order to see in front of me a sea of competition and all of my peers lined up in front of me on a sofa. It deflated my balloon very rapidly. But from that pack, I was plucked – which was great. And Anna Wintour to this day remains the most powerful woman in the fashion industry. It’s a very intimate, very productive, very trusting relationship. She has the ability and the smarts to turn to the creative people around her and say, “Do your best work.” It’s her business to do that. She has a fine-tuned instinct for being able to spot great talent and to be able to nurture it. What is the most important room in the house? For me? The dining room is critically important because it’s where we gather together. And not just at dinner – any room that you can gather your family at a table becomes the most important room in the house. Hopefully that doesn’t mean the island in the kitchen; we’ve got to wean ourselves off of standing around the island in the kitchen and eating. You want to be at a table. You want to be able to look each other in the eye and communicate, to talk to each other. Whether that’s a card table, a breakfast table or a dining table, that will define what becomes the most important room. There’s nothing that tops the gathering of family and friends. In a time of great uncertainty, in a topsy-turvy world where sometimes everything seems to be upside down or on fire, the gathering at a table is enormously reassuring. Continued on page 61

Michael Grim

M

ichael Grim was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and his love of flowers began when he was just 12-years-old. He was inspired while visiting his grandmother in Vermont. Michael would take walks with her and return with flowers for every room in the house.

He went to Lehigh Vocational Technical School during his high school years where he learned the fundamentals of horticulture. There he met Peter Tryforus, the head of FTD, who singled Michael out at a floral design panel. Michael was the only high school student on the panel. Upon seeing his designs, Tryforus urged Michael’s parents to allow their son to utilize his talents in a larger market, and upon his graduation, he left for New York City. After a stint at the St. Regis Hotel, he found himself at the St. Moritz Flower Shop. He was still just 21. Michael noticed that his Manhattan clientele were establishing second homes in the Hamptons, and he was gradually drawn to move there full-time by 1981. He and his partner, Jim Osburn eventually purchased The Bridgehampton Florist, a shop that has become the standard for fabulous arrangements in a fabulous part of the Northeast. He and Jim have appeared on “Barefoot Contessa” with Ina Garten. For the last 35 years, Michael has provided his services to enhance the entertaining done by the Lauder family. Before visiting The Gardens for a talk and a workshop, Grim shares more about his career, his work with Labor Day’s Hampton Classic and what he’ll share with Birmingham. How do you make your designs work inside and out? My work is very, very country and simple. It’s not designed or over the top - it’s really just a very casual garden look. A lot of our houses here have outdoor living rooms, so flowers are used out there. I basically work with things that are local and in season. Even though I’ll bring in hydrangeas from Holland, it really is pretty much a farm-to-table look. Whatever is in season here - dahlias, hydrangeas, garden roses…things like that. How large of an undertaking is the Hampton Classic for you? How much manpower does that take? We take five or six people over there with us. The planning really starts as soon as it’s over. I’m getting phone calls in January and February to start designing tables with new and different looks. All week, there are things happening at the horse show. The big Grand Prix is when people are setting beautiful tables, china and things like that. That’s where the fun is! We get started on Grand Prix Sunday - we’re on the ring at about 5 a.m. to get started with the tables. Last year we did about 25 tables. How did you connect with Aerin Lauder? Through her mother and her grandmother! I started doing flowers for Aerin’s mother probably 35 years ago when Aerin was just a young girl. I helped with Aerin’s wedding and I’ve always been involved with her family. Years ago when I started with Jo Carole we’d do flowers for her grandmother. It’s a 35 year friendship. At that point, they must sort of just turn things over to you and trust your judgement, right? They do! Sometimes they have their ideas and we go from there, but it’s always a very casual kind of entertaining, whether it’s in the formal dining room or an outside party. In summertime in the formal dining room, we do hydrangeas or white garden roses. Outside with dining rooms and picnics, it’s cosmos and dahlias and garden kinds of flowers. What will we learn from your workshop here? I’m going to focus on the holidays - Thanksgiving and Christmas. There are going to be fun things that can be done for tables - napkin rings and things like that. I’m also going to show you how to do things the weekend before Thanksgiving or the weekend before Christmas and keep them somewhere cool so that all of the pressures aren’t down to the wire. What flower is best for all occasions? Oh God, that’s like asking which is my favorite child! You know, when it comes down to it, a beautiful rose can be perfect; single, and in a little bud vase next to a bed down, or 50 to 60 of them in a silver bowl. They can be very casual or very formal. What or who inspires your style? Everywhere I look - the sky, fields, wildflowers, the ocean. I get color palette ideas from sunsets to sunrises. Everywhere I look. Everywhere I see or feel. Right now, I see a little yellow sunflower in my back yard, so when I wake up tomorrow, I’ll probably be inspired to do something in yellow.

eddie ross

Designer & Author of Modern Mix: Curating Personal Style with Chic & Accessible Finds

E

ddie Ross is the East Coast Editor of Better Homes & Gardens. He’s worked as a design, decorating and food editor for House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living and the Food Network. Ross is also a trained chef, having studied at the Culinary Institute of America. He spent time in the Magic City at Southern Living.

He comes to Birmingham just after the release of his first book, Modern Mix: Curating Personal Style with Chic & Accessible Finds. In addition to his talk, “Dare to Mix,” he’ll shop the show with patrons and join our Taste in Spades Design Panel/Discussion. Before his visit, he shared more about his style and the art of mixing vintage and modern designs. What inspires your style? I’m always trying to find new ways to use old things. I’ll scour antique stores, thrift shops and flea markets for cool, one-of-a-kind things that add personal style anywhere they go. What’s your secret to being able to make old things feel new again? For me, it’s all about the mix—new and old, traditional and modern, simple and elaborate. I think the most memorable rooms (or parties or table settings) are the ones with the most interesting mix of stuff as though collected over time. What is the most important part of entertaining? People make the party, but pretty things certainly help. Think carefully about what you can do with the time and money you have. Even if you’re ordering take-out on a Tuesday, put it in something stylish, and you’re well on your way. Where is the best place to discover secondhand finds? I think it’s more about a point of view than any particular place. If you know what to look for, you can find it just about anywhere. Educate your eyes, and the world will come into focus. What are the top three markets in America? I’m a regular at the Scott Antique Market in Atlanta. Long Beach out in California is a good one, too. Renningers in Adamstown, Pennsylvania is another favorite.

Modern Mix combines a lot of your talents as the name would imply. How do you make all of your talents work for you at the same time? Modern Mix is the book I’d always wanted but never found. I think of it as my first brushstroke—a big, broad overview of everything I love. From food and flowers, to thrifting, decorating and entertaining, it will inspire you to live every day colorfully and creatively. Is any one of the things that you do more important to you? The cooking, the interior design? The writing? What is at the top of your priority list right now? Right now, my top priority (outside of the magazine) is getting our new house done! I have three PODS full of things that I’m anxious to see—and use. It will be like discovering them all over again! Patience is no virtue of mine, but I’m learning to think carefully about the design now, before we start, instead of making more costly changes later. The house is a 1921 center-hall colonial that we’re updating while keeping the building’s vintage charm. I’ve already been out getting reclaimed brick and finding old doors for a small addition. Last week, I found one that we’re turning into a Dutch door for the new mudroom!

Mark Sikes

Designer & Author of Beautiful: All-American Decorating and Timeless Style

M

ark D. Sikes was born in Texas. He spent time in Nashville and Atlanta before settling on the West Coast. Mark’s life experience brings a Southern sensibility to his style as seen in the laid back vibes of his current home. He stays busy as both an interior designer and a fashion designer, and his first book will be released soon. Before his upcoming visit, Sikes shared more about his style, his work with the Southern Living Idea House and his fashion line, MDS Stripes.

What can you share about the space in the Southern Living Idea House that you designed? I did the living room; it’s a really amazing room that is on the main floor and connects to the master bedroom which is kind of unusual. It also has doors that open up to the porches around the house. It has great light, it’s a really large space and I really didn’t want to treat the living room as a traditional, formal living room; I wanted it to be a room where multiple things could be happening at once. There’s a fireplace on one end with a little bit of seating around it. It serves as more of a sitting area to read, reflect and to chat. There’s another area on the other side of the living room with a little more seating which serves as a place where you can have multiple groups of people. Whether you’re having a cocktail party, watching TV or whatever it’s a really great space. You’ll have a book out in September. What can we expect from it? It’s called Beautiful, and the book kind of named itself. After I shot all of my projects and began putting them into chapters, page after page, the word that would pop to mind was beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. That’s how the title came to be. It’s different than most interior design coffee table books that you see. It’s not separated by entry or living room or dining rooms. The chapters are more by theme or color story. You can see in the book where I draw inspiration. Whether it comes from iconic interiors from the past or gardens or iconic people or iconic destinations. There’s a mood board quality of the way that things are laid out so that you get a sense of where the inspiration came from. How did you decide to launch Stripes, the women’s fashion line? With everything else that you have going on, is it overwhelming? My partner, Michael, works with me on the MDS Stripes fashion line. It wasn’t completely thought out, other than the fact that I love blue and white and I love stripes and it felt like there was a need to create a stripes fashion line for women that wasn’t just basic or utilitarian, but also was feminine. I feel like, in general, stripes are a universal love. I’ve never met anyone that doesn’t like a stripe. So it sort of happened organically, and we’ve been wildly surprised about how well it’s done and how it’s taken off. We started with a core selection or a core assortment and now we’re doing four collections a year - more robust collections. We just started out with more knits. It’s been amazing to see how well it has been received and how quickly it’s growing. How were you able to combine your Southern and Midwest influences with your current West Coast style? My grandparents were from the Midwest and there, I really got a sense of home, a sense of being, a sense of place. In the South, you garner a sense of tradition, lifestyle and entertaining. And you don’t get that in other parts of the country. In California, there’s a way of living here. There’s a casual aspect to it, but there’s also an elegant aspect to it. The thing about California which has come to define my design work is a connection between the indoors and the outdoors. Creating spaces that maximize your living opportunities because they’re connected. That’s one of the best parts of living in California and of California design.

Gen & Ben Sohr Pencil & Paper Creative Development Company

G

en and Ben Sohr are the married team behind Pencil & Paper Co., a full service branding company. They offer complete architectural services, custom home and renovation design, interior design and styling, retail design packages and branding, space planning, 3-D rendering, color, material and finish selections as well as “to-go” packages. Before their visit, they shared more about all of the things they do and how they came to meet some of their celebrity clientele. Your style seems to lean much more modern. Do you ever incorporate vintage pieces into your designs? I would characterize our design as “collected”. I’m a huge believer in buying pieces that just “speak to you” and “tell a story”. We love a mix of vintage (often modern) pieces paired with more traditional elements...but always put together with an overall “clean” vibe. You’ve found a way to make really modern designs work in very Southern spaces and make that feel right. How? I think the definition of “Southern” is evolving. We love the traditional elements of the South... warm, welcoming spaces with a bit of heritage....what we add is a fresh, colorful twist which doesn’t overwhelm the existing aesthetic. Our design work thrives on the juxtaposition of new verses old and the mix of different eras and styles coming together. As Nashville has expanded, the common practice has been to raze properties and start fresh; for us there is nothing more exciting than finding all older property and bringing it back to life. What are some recent brand launching projects of which you all have been a part? How difficult is a task that large for two people? Our company grew out of our prior careers. Previously, Benjamin oversaw visual and store design for several large retailers including Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic and Body Shop. At different intervals, I oversaw visual merchandising and creative services for companies ranging from Old Navy to Oilily to Victoria’s Secret. Our experience in developing branded environments still influences how we approach projects - both residential and commercial. As for brands we are working with now or recently, we worked with Reese Witherspoon on concept development. We also worked on a flagship location for Draper James in Nashville; we had the good fortune to collaborate with our former colleague and great friend Mark D. Sikes on that one! We worked with Sprinkles Cupcakes on their expansion into the Southeast. We partnered with Spanx on reconnecting their packaging and assortment for Target stores last fall. Our most exciting branding project of late is George Dickel, the storied Tennessee whisky distiller; currently, we are working with them to reimagine the experience of visiting their distillery and to create a retail experience from the ground up. We have an amazing team of in-house designers and project managers who help support all of our projects and clients. What is really unique about P+P is that we can provide both design services (architecture and interiors) and turn-key branding services (merchandising, graphics design, marketing, and social media strategies) in house. What is the most important room in a home and what is the most important piece of furniture in it? The kitchen is the new gathering spot for folks at home today, and we treat it as such with lots of seating and seating options. We love a huge island that can do quadruple duty as a prep station for cooking, a dining table for long family dinners, a homework station for kids, or a hang-out spot for friends.

M

argaret Kirkland Interiors is a full-service residential design firm based in Atlanta, Georgia. Kirkland’s classic, elegant interiors develop from the structural assets of each space. Seeking inspiration in the home’s architecture, scale, and natural light—and often in the client’s favorite object, color, or work of art—Kirkland designs rooms that incorporate both the home’s innate character and the client’s spirit and lifestyle. One of her greatest pleasures as a designer is to go hunting in a client’s storage for old treasures that can be repurposed to give them new life, while also bringing the client’s personality directly into the space. The results are sophisticated refuges that imbue their modern comforts with a subtle sense of history and timelessness. Prior to founding her namesake firm, Kirkland worked in New York and later in her native Atlanta with Dan Carithers Design Consultants. Over the course of fifteen years in the design industry, she has completed projects including residences, high rises, showrooms, spas, country clubs, and even an interior design pop-up shop in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Kirkland has worked for clients throughout the United States—including New York, Chicago, South Carolina and Atlanta—and also on several international projects. Past

projects have included the complete renovation of a historic plantation, the transformation of a small carpentry workshop into a three-bedroom guest cottage, and updating a farmhouse located in France that had been expanded and modified over several centuries. The privilege of being a part of the rich and evolving history and character of these homes stays with Kirkland—informing her sense as a designer that great homes are ones that are both fresh and enduring. Margaret Kirkland Interiors has been published in multiple magazines including Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, House Beautiful, and Southern Living. Kirkland has been awarded the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center’s (ADAC) “Rising Star” Award for interior design, named a “Next Wave” designer by House Beautiful, and named best “15 under 40” by Atlanta Home’s and Lifestyles Magazine. Kirkland is a member of the Southeastern Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art (ICAA) and the Designer Network for Coastal Living and Southern Living Magazines.

W

hen Pam Evans and her husband, Donald, relocated to Birmingham from Atlanta 16 years ago, she decided to take a break from being an elementary school teacher and pursue a personal passion - antiquing. Pam started by buying things she loved - just in case no one else liked them. She opened a booth at the Interiors Market at Pepper Place, and soon, friends and clients were not only buying her antiques but also asking her to help decorate their houses. Eventually her word-of-mouth decorating became a full blown business. Though Pam is still on the hunt for fabulous finds, she now seeks those unique pieces for clients and their individual spaces. Pam Evans Antiques + Interiors is operated from a gallery space at Architectural Heritage in Pepper Place. Pam’s style and design work 36 |

ith a passion for garden design and an eye for detail, Todd Dorlon began a new chapter in his career, opening TMD Landscape Designs in 2011. The timing felt right to him, after eight years of hands-on experience, at two leading Birmingham area firms. Over the last few years, TMD Landscape Designs has evolved and expanded to encompass all exterior design aspects of the home and garden. In addition to traditional landscape and hardscape design, and with a goal of meeting all of a client’s design needs, TMD Landscape Designs has a wide range of offerings to carry a project through to completion. With an appreciation of fine craftsmanship, and a desire to make each project unique, Todd enjoys designing custom garden elements such as benches, water features, shutters, gates and window boxes. Additional offerings range from help with container & fountain selection, to outdoor furniture & fabric, to paint colors and design modifications of a home’s exterior. The ultimate goal, in addition to creating a beautiful, functional space, is to make the process easy and enjoyable for 40 |

For the 2016 Antiques at The Gardens, Todd chose to pair with Rodney Griffin, owner of Gardens by Griffin. Todd worked closely with Rodney and his experienced team to ensure his vision was accurately displayed in what you will see at the show. Todd’s interest in plants and design started years before following this path. It took a few career changes and an additional degree to get him where he is today. Todd’s grandmother, Joy Magruder, was an avid gardener with a wealth of plant knowledge based on years of experience. Most every plant in her yard had a story behind it. When Todd worked in her garden, she would often share those stories with him. Her encouragement and tutelage through the years developed a spark in Todd. A connection to nature that eventually led him to leave a job in the banking industry, and obtain a degree in Environmental Design through the School of Architecture at Auburn University. Nods to his grandmother can be found intermingled throughout Todd’s design for this year’s Antiques at The Gardens. Landscapes are ever-changing. Getting to know the client and understanding their long-term goals are very important. Todd feels the formula for a solid design involves weaving together a designer’s knowledge with a client’s personal design style and the style of the home. He believes the mark of a happy client is revealed when a project ends, and then evolves into an on-going relationship. In Todd’s view, there is nothing more rewarding than watching a design that he had a hand in mature, and being entrusted to make improvements to the garden over time. continued from page 14.

What is the secret to combining modern and vintage looks? You’ve got to be current. Being constantly open to the evolution of changes that surround us. We are constantly evolving and changing in the way we communicate, the way we travel and it’s all completely different than the way it was two or three years ago. You have to be open and receptive to change. The evolution of the world is the secret to modern life without ever losing track of the value of tradition or the merit that our history has brought to us and continues to – that’s what we try to do. History with horsepower. Who or what still inspires you? The foundations of my creativity and inspiration come from the creative world that surrounds me. I’m immersed in contemporary art and decorative arts. The way that we dress or the music we listen to or the art that we see will inform all of the other aspects of what surrounds us. Many of your notable projects have happened in larger cities. Can you tell me more about some of the projects that have taken place in rural areas? Our projects are global. I am as happy working on a log cabin on 100 acres of farmland as I am working in a dazzling duplex penthouse on 5th Avenue. What I am ultimately looking for are people that embrace what I have to offer and enthusiastically let me do my best work. We’re currently working on projects in Seattle, Santa Barbara, Bel Air, Montecito, Marth, Texas, Palm Beach, London, Greenwich, Connecticut, It’s a very broad and diverse portfolio of projects. The projects that you see in American Master run the gamut from New York City to Palm Beach to Aspen to San Francisco. I find that long distance projects are far more productive than the one that’s just around the corner. If we’re going to travel any distance and we bring value to the table, the time that we spend together is enormously valuable and can tend to be more productive than a project much closer to home. I would say that 70% of the work that we do is long distance rather than local or regional.
