Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens practices a policy of equal opportunity & equal access to services for all persons regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, orientation or sex. Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a facility of Birmingham Park & Recreation Board. The deadline for the Sept/Aug issue is July 15.

Our vision is to be one of the nation’s preeminent botanical gardens. Along the way, our mission is to promote public knowledge of plants, gardens and the environment. This is the path we’re on and the path on which we will continue. We’ve reached a transitional phase, but rest assured, this remains our path forward. That said, I believe you all know by now that Fred Spicer recently resigned from our organization, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. For fourteen years Fred served The Gardens and his many achievements are notable. Adding 46,000 plants to our acreage is but one, incredible accomplishment over those years for which Fred can be credited. We thank him for his service, his innumerable accomplishments and wish him the very best going forward. As we transition, Fred has been asked and has agreed to continue in an occasional teaching capacity at The Gardens. Stay abreast of these opportunities at www.bbgardens.org! Fred is a learned botanist and we appreciate his willingness to remain an educational asset. I’d like to discuss the aforementioned path forward. To advance down that path, it is important for us all to realize some tremendous strengths with which The Gardens is blessed. First, the City of Birmingham and its support is magnificent. Director of Horticulture James Horton and his team continue to do an outstanding job in so many ways. In all my working years, I have come across very few with his always positive disposition. No matter the task, James always finds a way to a successful outcome. He does it with a smile and always ensures that people around him are happy. We could all learn from James.

Dear Friends:

Second, our Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens staff, a group that is always prepared to move us forward. Education, operations, finance and development are vital to our continued success, and our roster in each department is deep. We’ve stockpiled talent at each position and I encourage you to visit The Gardens and talk to this team about their regular routine. You’ll be quite impressed, I assure. Supporting the City of Birmingham and Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a very strong Board of Directors that is passionate about The Gardens’ path forward. Our priority is to be among the best public gardens in America. Why? Because we can, and because Birmingham deserves it. For more than 50 years, The Gardens has served the Magic City as a resource center, a place to learn, a site of reflection, a place of joy, an outdoor classroom, a location to appreciate and a source of pride. The Board of Directors’ aim is to preserve all of these qualities that invites our community to engage with the outdoors in a botanical garden that boasts thousands of species of plants, miles of pathways, a world-class conservatory, a stunning Japanese Garden and more. Representing a diverse cross-section of that community, we’re a Board of results-oriented garden enthusiasts, with clear direction in making your Gardens the best they can be. Often unrecognized but fundamental to all that we do are the numerous plant societies and support groups that regularly help make The Gardens what they are. Whether it’s by pulling weeds, cultivating new plants or assisting with Spring and Fall Plant Sales, these enthusiasts voluntarily provide a foundation for much of our success. Not only have these groups helped us sustain, they helped lay our foundation more than 50 years ago. To this group we are forever appreciative. Our Board of Trustees are a group comprised of past leaders that work in cooperation with those societies and the current Board of Directors. They gather annually to share their wisdom with those of us in an active role today. We’re also extremely grateful for these folks, the leadership they offer and the core affinity they have that has enabled us to get where we are. These intelligent and energized groups each have a voice in our path forward. To assist in corralling them all, we’ve enlisted two devoted and enthusiastic supporters of The Gardens that have shared a wonderful history with us. Jeanie Sherlock is a 13 term Board member who has served as Board Chair, Spring Plant Sale Chair, Finance Committee Member and as a Trustee. She’s intimate with the daily activities of our staff and has enjoyed a regular rapport with our City partners, our Trustees and many of our Members for many years. She has agreed to assist us in our time of transition as a liaison between the Board and the people that handle our day-to-day operations. We couldn’t be more appreciative, as Jeanie’s involvement in the process ensures healthy and effective communication between a myriad of assemblies reaching for the same goal. John Floyd has also stepped to the plate to help. He has agreed to lead the search process for a new Executive Director. John’s resume outside and inside of The Gardens is extraordinary: •Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living Magazine for 18 years •Weekly presence at The Gardens regularly performing projects and maintenance •Birmingham Botanical Society Trustee •B.S. degree from Auburn in Ornamental Horticulture and a M.S. and Ph.D. from Clemson in Horticulture and Plant Physiology. He also holds an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Furman •Past Chair of Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens •Operator of BirminghamGardeningToday.com (check it out - you’ll be impressed!) •Well networked among the public gardens community across the country John is perfect for the task. When you see him around – and you will – thank him for volunteering to lead this very important process. I hope you share my great enthusiasm on our path forward. Please know that your remarks and suggestions are welcome. Contact me anytime at bbarr@bbgardens.org. See you in The Gardens, Brian Barr Board of Directors Chairman

Good Things Growing… In The Gardens John Alex Floyd, Jr. – Garden Trustee

Summer days in The Gardens means hot, humid and dry days. Here at The Gardens, we try to work diligently keeping our plants looking as fresh as possible. This is also a time when the vegetable garden is full of our summer vegetables ready to harvest: tomatoes, okra, pole beans, peppers and others are abundant. Remember, nearly all of the food that we produce goes to Magic City Harvest to help feed those not as fortunate as you or I. Across The Gardens, the annuals planted in May are coming into full bloom. It is a great time to look at the plants our gardening crew installed, and Director of The Gardens James Horton’s planting designs. I think it’s important to look at how he combines flowering plants with colorful foliage plants. I am really enthralled with his use of colorful foliage plants like coleus, caladiums and copperleaf. Watching how they handle these plants, I am always intrigued. Coleus, which can get too tall to work well in combination with the flowering annuals, are likely cut back by half, fertilized and watered, then rejuvenate and look good until fall. Caladiums are treated differently in shady places. Since they are tubers whose leaves are colorful, they also need continuous fertilization and grooming over the summer. They are liquid fed on a regular basis, and while the dead and damaged leaves

are removed as needed, it is important to remove the unattractive flower to help keep the tubers producing leaves. Since copperleaf (Acalypha) is a wood ornamental, the best way to keep this plant in proportion to the flowering annuals is to go down into the plant and prune out the tallest branches. This will not only reduce the height of the plants, but also help produce dense plants that will look good until the glorious display of fall marigolds are planted in The Gardens. So early in the morning or late afternoon, take a garden stroll in the cool of the day and see the various annual displays in the big garden beds and the various pots. Then be sure to go by the vegetable garden and see what is taking the summer heat and still producing abundantly. You will be proud of the beauty of The Gardens and the amazing amounts of vegetables we give to Magic City Harvest year round. See more of John’s gardening advice at BirminghamGardeningToday.com

We are very excited to announce that we have started a massive indexing project of the garden club yearbooks from Jefferson County in our collection. This includes all federated and nonfederated garden clubs. We currently have over 900 yearbooks from more than 80 different clubs. Phase one of this project will tackle the loose garden club yearbooks and phase two will be for the yearbooks that are inside our garden club scrapbooks. This will be a very helpful reference tool and it will allow us to look up someone by name or club. To see what yearbooks we currently have, visit www.catalog. jclc.org. We want all garden clubs to be part of this index, so make sure your club is represented. If you do not see your club listed and have yearbooks, please consider donating them to The Archives at The Gardens.
