The Junior Board presented the inaugural Dirt Dash 5K Fun Run/Walk on November 17. Over 200 runners & walkers competed in various age groups, utilizing the paths & trails of Alabama’s largest living museum.

Happy New Year! And Happy Birthday to us! We’re 50! In December 1962, we opened the Conservatory; in April 1963, we dedicated the Floral Clock. However, at the same time, other events were happening in Birmingham, events with far greater impact on the world. In December 1962, Mayor Art Hanes, Sr., closed city parks in defiance of a federal court order to desegregate them. Were The Gardens closed? We don’t know, but Hanes’ name is on the Conservatory dedication plaque – as is T. Eugene Connor’s. In April 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” These profound events & others from 1963 will be commemorated through 2013 as the City of Birmingham marks the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement. Visit www.birmingham13.com for details. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley said, “The course of history began to change right here... It is important for us to reflect on that history... to draw inspiration from the courage & sacrifice of those who fought for equality.” We agree, & we think our own anniversary celebration should wait. Birmingham Mayor William Bell said, “What happened in Birmingham was the catalyst for a change around the world. We will welcome those who will visit to learn more about the history & its significance on our future, discovering a Birmingham that is in the center of it all...” Again, we agree. Our living collections celebrate diversity & I think this makes us keenly aware of the value of human diversity. Our free public garden – open from dawn until dusk every day – welcomes everyone. Our free education programs do the same, bringing the study of science & respect for nature to all our participants. We’ll kick-off our own 50th anniversary with the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in December, then a full year of special activities to follow through 2014.

New 2013 Board of Directors Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is pleased to announce its 2013 Board of Directors. Tricia Noble will serve as president, taking over for Past President Henry Ray. Scott Walton returns as treasurer & Barbara Burton will serve her first term as secretary. Hanson Slaughter will serve as presidentelect. Jeanie Sherlock will assume the role of vice president of development, while Brian Barr returns as vice president of facilities & planning. Carl Jones will serve as governance chair. Lou Willie & Elizabeth Broughton will serve as officers. Sherlock is one of seven new board members for 2013, a group that includes: Mary Boehm, Chris Boles, Emily Bowron, Beverly Hoyt, Houston Gillespy, & Charles Goodrich. Five 2012 board members will rotate off: Shane Boatright, Sheryl Kimerling, Mike Malone, Fred Murray & Janet Taylor. These hands-on science adventures for elementary & middle school students are provided to Birmingham & Bessemer area schools free of charge! The Gardens thanks the Junior League of Birmingham, Vulcan Materials Corporation, the cities of Mountain Brook & Vestavia Hills, Regions Financial Corporation, Wells Fargo Foundation, The Hugh Kaul Foundation, Susan Mott Webb Charitable Trust, Robert R. Meyer Foundation & The Goodrich Foundation for their generous grants which benefited over 10,000 children last year. What do Central Park & Birmingham Botanical Gardens have in common? Financier John Paulson recently pledged $100 million dollars to the Central Park Conservancy in New York City because, in his words, it is “one of the most democratic institutions. It’s used by people of all ages, races, nationalities & income levels.”* Birmingham Botanical Gardens also benefits our visitors with free admission every day. Like Central Park, The Gardens depends on contributions to its non-profit friends organization to fund education programs, special projects, plant collections & things beyond the scope of city support.

While most of us can’t imagine philanthropy at Mr. Paulson’s scale, we can make a difference locally with individual donations or by planning an estate gift to The Gardens. Mrs. Barbara Nell Drummond Thorne’s 2012 bequest made possible a spectacular new feature in the Japanese Gardens. The handsome stone amphitheatre transforms the Moore Cultural Pavilion into a true performance venue & its grounds into a beautiful gathering place. Nearby, Don & Matt Crowe’s family honored them with a memorial bench & two tribute trees, a weeping cherry & a Japanese maple. In the Hill Garden, The Trowel Garden Club gave a lovely Lutyens-style bench

to commemorate its 62 year existence. The site is especially appropriate since it is named for the family of the late Jane Hill Head, one of the founding club members. Each of these gifts include a portion of endowment, so that the plants, furnishings & features will be cared for & properly maintained for years to come for the enjoyment of all of our visitors. Henry Hughes, Director of Education

Hunter McBrayer, a 2012 graduate in biology of the University of Alabama, was selected from eight finalists representing seven colleges & universities for the Rotary Club of Shades Valley Summer Internship 2012. A native of Blount County, Hunter grew up exploring the woods, fields & streams near the Locust Fork River. He attended grades one through 12 at the same rural school, winning upon graduation the Good Citizen Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Warrior River Chapter. At the University of Alabama, he distinguished himself as, in his academic advisor’s words, “…one of the most inspired & hardest-working undergraduate students I have ever encountered.” Hunter proved himself similarly at The Gardens with a thoroughly accomplished tenure that focused on his special interest in plant conservation. In addition to performing many horticulture-related tasks, such as weeding, watering, fertilizing & cataloging plants in the collections, Hunter worked with native plants, exploring natural areas such as Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, Talladega National Forest (right photo), the Bibb County Glades, the Nature Conservancy’s Splinter Hill Bog in Baldwin County (left photo), Weeks Bay Nature Preserve, & the native habitat in Hale County, Alabama, of a very rare fern, Asplenium tutwilerae, Tutwiler’s spleenwort. He attended the biennial meeting in Mobile of the Alabama Plant Conservation Alliance & visited both the Huntsville & Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Hunter presented several

Rotary Club of Shades Valley Summer Internship Enters Its Sixth Year

lectures on his experiences at The Gardens at the monthly meetings of the Master Gardeners, the Garden Docents & the Birmingham Fern Society & at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Shades Valley. His observations are posted on The Gardens’ blog at www.bbgardens.org/blog. Hunter follows a distinguished group of student summer interns at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Meghan McDonald, 2008 graduate of Birmingham-Southern College, has completed her master’s degree in literature at the University of Tennessee. Steve Kennedy, 2009 graduate of Miles College, completed his master’s degree in plant science at Tennessee State University. Katie King, 2010 graduate of Samford University, is almost finished with her master’s degree in public garden leadership at Cornell University. Cameron Strauss, 2011 graduate of University of Montevallo, is working in horticulture after completing a second horticultural internship in Oregon. The Rotary Club of Shades Valley generously expanded its financial support of the summer internship from ten weeks to 12 in 2012 & has committed to the same in 2013. Volunteer Spotlight Taylor Steele, Volunteer Coordinator

In Memory of Winyss Acton Shepard Volunteer service was just a part of who she was… As a sustaining volunteer at The Gardens, Winyss Shepard was an integral part of the Herb Army, where she had volunteered since 1985. Winyss’s absence at an event, meeting, lecture or volunteer workday was rare. Her immense dedication & passion to The Gardens was clear. In addition to serving as chair for three Herb Day events, she held the title of Birmingham Botanical Gardens Auxiliary president from 1989-1991 & served as Chairperson for Fiesta (Spring Plant Sale) in 1994. She was the recipient of the Ida Collier Burns Volunteer of the Year Award in 1999, chaired the Building Committee, edited The Gardens newsletter until it transitioned to the Garden Dirt & was an active Board member until 2001. Shepard’s passion was evident for plants & people alike. To the Herb Army, Shepard was deemed “Mint Lady.”. Because of her tenacity to grow mint very well, she was tasked with growing many varieties found in The Gardens’ Herb Terrace for annual plant sales & Herb Day events. She was often seen before Fall Plant Sale pulling wagon-loads of mints from the potting shed to the nursery carts, ensuring her mints were in the correct place. Winyss passed on October 14, 2012. The City of Birmingham & Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens join her fellow

volunteers in mourning. Her generosity forever changed each life she touched. Her memory & spirit are etched in the hearts of the friends & volunteers she leaves behind. Her life was a gift. She will be missed.

A Special Thanks... Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens would like to thank Henry Ray for his two years of service as president from 2011 - 2012. Under Henry’s leadership participation events & programming have continued to flourish. A special tree will be planted in Henry’s honor in The Gardens.

On January 3, 1963, Mrs. Horace (Catherine K.) Hammond announced her intent to give the City of Birmingham a floral clock valued at $15,232 to grace the front of the new Conservatory, which had just recently opened December 18, 1962. The gift was given to Parks Superintendant Frank Wagner, who accepted it on behalf of the Park Board. The floral clock was dedicated on April 4, 1963. The clocks face, planted against a background of crushed white marble, shows the time & date of the presentation at the top. The reminder, Tempus Fugit, is below. The clock was designed by John Clark of Ontario, Canada, constructed by the Daniel Construction Co., under direction from architect Darcey T. Tatum.

Good Things Growing…

In The Gardens Fred Spicer, Executive Director

Two modest deciduous shrubs are among the earliest of native woody plants to flower for us. Neither is terrifically showy but both offer unpretentious flower interest in the winter garden, & attractive problem-free performance yearround. Both grow well in central Alabama with proper siting & are typically in bloom for us by early February – true harbingers of Spring! Dirca palustris, leatherwood, is in the Thymelaeaceae, the same family as Daphne & Edgeworthia. One of its common names is rope-bark, which perfectly describes the tough-barked, supple stems (you can literally tie them in knots) which were used as cordage by Native Americans. The small, frost-resistant flowers (left) are bright chartreuse & are borne on leafless stems. Leaves emerge a similar color before calming down to a beautiful rich green, with a matte finish. They hide the ripening fruit, small green (green-red) berries; fall color can be a good yellow. Near the boardwalk in the Barber Alabama Woodlands, a small mass thrives in the shade & moister-than-average soil (top right). Hundreds of seedlings have self-sown, virtually carpeting the area beneath them. In the wild, the species is found almost exclusively in basic & mafic soils, but tolerates mildly acid soils in the garden. Leatherwood grows slowly to form a dense, rounded & single-trunked shrub seldom getting larger than 6’ tall & wide. Lindera benzoin, northern spicebush, is in the Lauraceae, related to sassafras & the Mediterranean Laurus nobilis, the bay of commerce. Bruised stems & crushed leaves are highly aromatic (lemony). Bright yellow flowers (middle right) bloom prior to leaf-out & are not troubled by frost. Bright scarlet fruit form on pollinated female plants & are very attractive (bottom left). Fall color is a reliably good yellow (bottom right). Northern spicebush is a multi-stemmed shrub that over time can reach small tree proportions in the 12’+ range. In the landscape, 6-8’ tall & slightly wider, with a rounded habit, is more realistic. Like leatherwood, this species usually indicates alkaline soils in the wild in Alabama. In the northern part of its range, it lives in acid sites as well. Plant in part shade in average (to moist) soils. The species is pest-free – so pay close attention if you see some chewed or folded leaves. It could be a sign of spicebush swallowtail butterfly larva that prefer this plant as their host.

Spray all deciduous shrubbery with a dormant spray when weather is on warming trend. LAWNS - Soil test before setting up fertility program. ROSES - Start planting. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALSPlant hardy annuals. BULBS-Lilies of all types, except Madonna, may be planted. Make indoor plantings of amaryllis, callas, & gloxinias. MISCELLANEOUS-To keep poinsettias that have finished flowering, turn pots on their sides & let them dry completely Cut them back lightly Keep in a temperature of 55 to 60 °.
