Beginning in March, The Gardens will host “Wellness Walks” for adults with our education partner, Fresh Air Family, Inc. Each Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. a professional naturalist will lead a hike through The Gardens with a nature-based theme, such as mosses, ferns, wildflowers, trees, flowering shrubs, geology, birds and butterflies. Hikes are free. Meet in the Orientation Room located on the plaza near Leaf and Petal at The Gardens. Hikes will take place rain or shine. If there are thunderstorms, we will provide an indoor lecture until the weather is “all clear” and we can hike. The first hike is set for Tuesday, March 1, with “Lichens,” the fascinating associations of fungus and algae that add beautiful colored patterns to tree bark and rocks. Is it spring yet? As of this writing, small piles of ice still linger in the shadiest nooks of The Gardens, and the progress of winterblooming plants has been somewhat stifled, but not eliminated. As you read this in early March, I have no doubt that we are still in for at least some frosty weather as our average “last frost” date is 3 April. I also don’t doubt that we’ve seen some warm temperatures already. Some regard these up-and-down swings as aberrations, but for the past 130 years (as far back as National Weather Service data goes in Birmingham) they have been the norm.

Thanks to Nancy Taylor Latimer, The Gardens has a gorgeous new View Receiving Bridge! The elegant structure is a memorial to Nancy’s late husband Dr. Wendell H. Taylor, Sr., a beloved patron of the Japanese Gardens who donated the Taylor Gate (the entry to our Japanese Cultural Center). The new bridge was designed by internationally renowned Japanese garden designer Shinichiro Abe (pictured left with Nancy and Lamar Latimer) and was fabricated by his firm, Zen Associates of Woburn, Mass. John McNabb, a local landscape contractor, built the extensive footings. Exquisitely crafted of western red cedar with a decking of ipê – an extremely hard wood from Brazil – and finished with traditional bronze mounts (sasaba) and finials (giboshi), the bridge is beautiful, functional and accessible. Additional funding for the project was provided by the Beeson Charitable Trust and the Wendell H. Taylor Fund for the Japanese Gardens held at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. Join us at the dedication, with sake instead of champagne, at the Sakura (cherry blossom) Festival on Saturday, March 19, 11:30 a.m.

Education docents move Discovery Field Trips from the indoor to the outdoor classroom, prepared and maintained by dedicated gardening volunteers. Our 2010 Volunteer Educator of the Year, Carol Hinshaw, is a model of service. A labor and delivery nurse by day, Carol is a mentor, a Master Gardener and a leader through her 11-plus years as an education docent. Carol is a lifelong learner whose interest in gardening first brought her to The Gardens. “I love the training that is provided for the docents,” she says, recounting a presentation and field trip through the Japanese Gardens and teahouse. Carol understands the importance of the field trip experience for children, adopting unique ways to make an impact. In the Native American field trip, she asks students to be silent and listen to nature for one minute. She recalls one student remarking, “That was so nice; can we do it again?” It was truly a unique experience for that child, made possible by an outstanding and innovative educator. Discovery Field Trips would not be possible without volunteers like Dr. Edwin Fineberg, our 2010 Planstperson of the Year. When Ed Fineberg moved to Birmingham from Indianapolis, he immediately found The Gardens as an outlet for his love of vegetable gardening. An endocrinologist by profession, Ed started weeding perennials in the summer of 2004 at The Gardens while growing persimmon and cherry trees at home. A strong service ethic led him to the Dr. George Washington Carver and Three Sisters Garden plantings, which he maintains throughout the year. Linda Emerson, retired Horticulture District Supervisor, described his service as “totally self-sufficient; he brings his own tools and stays a full day most days of the week during the important times.” Dr. Fineberg’s humility pervades his years of service to The Gardens. He has been finding and purchasing most of his own seeds and plants, “asking for help only when it involves large amounts of leaf mold or bark,” according to Linda. By maintaining the Carver Garden, Dr. Fineberg provides an essential tool for our Discovery Field Trips and the Birmingham Cultural Alliance Partnership, in which students and at-risk youth learn about Dr. Carver’s work in sustainable agricultural and race relations. Our 2010 Volunteer Partner of the Year, FOX 6, shares The Gardens’ sights and sounds with the entire community, multiplying our efforts to achieve our mission of education. On behalf of all of us here at The Gardens, thank you to each of our 2010 Volunteer of the Year award winners and to every one of our loyal and talented volunteers!

Good Things Growing… In The Gardens Fred Spicer, Executive Director

The best garden plants combine easy culture with a long period of ornamental interest, and Helleborus ×hybridus delivers. Called Lenten rose for its late winter-early spring blooms, it is not a rose but a member of the Ranunculaceae, or buttercup family. The true Oriental hellebore, H. orientalis, native to Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia and Russia (describing the southern half of Helleborus ×hybridus is not a rose but a the Black Sea), is not well-represented member of the buttercup family. in cultivation, so Helleborus ×hybridus is the correct name for the myriad cultivated forms of this plant. Lenten rose is a clumping herbaceous perennial 15-18” tall by 18-24” wide. The thick, dark green, glossy leaves are much-divided, with serrated margins; in our area they remain evergreen in winter, but the color may fade (bleach) somewhat in exposed locations. Leafless flower stalks will begin to arise from mid-December through late January; flowers are fully open by late January through early March. Although triggered by warmth, the flowers are not damaged by frost. Expect peak bloom from late February through Leafless flower stalks at least early April. The showy parts of the petalless flowers are the large sepals; these do not fall off after pollination (as petals would) but remain effective for 1-2 months. Pruning the old leaves off in late winter allows the new flowers to make a better show. The planting of Helleborus ×hybridus in our Southern Living Garden originated as “pass-alongs” from a gardener in East Lake in the late 70s, and multiplied quickly on site. Although a few Birmingham gardeners had grown the plant for years, The Gardens’ planting was the first time people had seen it massed as a groundcover, a use to which it is very well-suited here. Sepal coloration is white-pink-purple, often with dark speckles and a pale (near yellow) throat, typical for the species. Countless seedlings from this location have been sold for well over a decade at our spring and fall plant sales (and swapped relentlessly from there).

Named varieties (cultivars and seed strains) are Helleborus ×hybridus available in the trade, most easily through mail order. Southern Living Garden So far we haven’t found any that grow better than our “local” strain, which exhibits good vigor, excellent heat, and good drought tolerance. Part shade is preferable, in any soil (even one with a modestly alkaline pH) not permanently moist. The plant is insect and disease-free.

FRUITS AND NUTS - Continue strawberry and grape plantings. Bud apples and peaches. Start planting blackberries. SHRUBS - Fertilize shrubs (except azaleas and camellias) according to a soil test. Late plantings may be made, particularly if they are container-grown. Watch shrubs for harmful insects. LAWNS - Plant bermuda, zoysia, and centipede in South Alabama. Seed bluegrass and grass mixtures in North Alabama. Fertilize established lawns. ROSES - Watch new growth for aphids. Begin a spray or dust program. Begin fertilizing. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS - Check garden centers for bedding plants. BULBS - Plant gladiolus every two or three weeks if a long blooming season is desired. Plant tuberous begonias in pots. Plant dahlias. VEGETABLE SEEDS - Plant hardy crops recommended for January and February. VEGETABLE PLANTS – Plant cabbage, onions, lettuce, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts in North Alabama.

April FRUITS AND NUTS - Season for strawberry planting continues. Start spray program for all fruits. Plant raspberries and blackberries and continue budding apples and peaches. SHRUBS - Prune spring flowering shrubs after flowering. Fertilize azaleas and camellias. When new growth is half completed, spray all shrubs with a fungicide. LAWNS - Planting continues. New lawns may need supplementary watering. Also, fertilize at 3- to 6-week intervals. Keep ryegrass cut low, particularly if over planted on bermuda lawns. ROSES - Keep old flower heads removed. Plant containergrown plants from nurseries or garden centers. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS - Plant early started annuals or bedding plants. Divide mums or root cuttings. Dig and divide dahlias. BULBS - Plant gladiolus, fancy-leaved caladiums, milk and wine lilies, and ginger and gloriosa lilies. Feed bearded iris with superphosphate and spray for borers. Avoid cutting foliage of narcissus or other bulbs until it has turned brown naturally. VEGETABLE SEED - Plant tender vegetables such as beans, corn, squash, melons, and cucumbers. VEGETABLE PLANTS - Plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, sweet potatoes, and parsley

Certificate in Native Plant Studies Birmingham Botanical Gardens and its partners are excited to announce the launch of our new Certificate in Native Plant Studies program this spring. The curriculum combines core courses, electives, field trips and volunteer service, giving students a well-rounded educational experience revolving around native plants, conservation, and environmental education and service. Classes will be held at The Gardens, Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, Aldridge Botanical Gardens and sites managed by the Alabama Plant Conservation Alliance.. Core courses will be offered every other month, as will various electives. Students may begin their certificate with any course, but we suggest starting with Introduction to the Study of Native Plants to gain a basic understanding of the program’s scope. Certificates will be awarded to those who fulfill requirements within three years, but anyone is welcome to attend any of the courses.
