On The Cover Antiques at The Gardens celebrated its eighth year at Birmingham Botanical Gardens in style, kicking off the event with the glamorous, Sterne Agee Gala in The Gardens on October 4. More than 650 guests attended the elegant evening, complete with a tent and live music from the Tip Tops. Antiques at The Gardens featured Tastemakers who are regionally and nationally known architects, interior designers and garden designers. Each designer curated themed areas with goods selected from the best of Birmingham and other sources around the country. The show continued to include dealers from across the United States presenting antiques, furniture, porcelain, fine art, silver, garden accessories and jewelry. The cover photo features the booth of Tastemakers Holley and David Camp, and Helen Harmon. The Artisan Garden welcomed all guests to Antiques at The Gardens. A special thanks to Chair Tricia Holbrook, for her leadership and vision of making Antiques at The Gardens one of Birmingham’s best events. For those of us – like me – past the mid-century mark, embracing the phrase “50 is the new 30” is both a plea for the vitality of a younger day, and a realization that so-called middle age isn’t as dire a situation as we once thought it would be. In December, we’ll kick off a yearlong celebration of our 50th anniversary with a “golden” twist to our annual events and some one-time happenings that will be announced as they approach. How are The Gardens doing at 50? I think we’re just hitting our stride. Still, it’s not hard to notice that age has not been kind to some parts of our infrastructure, and certain features await renovation and restoration. Part of that is the nature of an institution like ours, and another part of that is raising the funds to fix them. On the heels of our Phase I Conservatory Improvements and new Exhibit Designs, we’ll soon have some good news to share about what’s next. Huge thanks to all of the donors and attendees of Antiques at The Gardens 2013. Special thanks go to chair Tricia Holbrook and her committee for doing a stellar job for the second year running on our largest fundraising event. Key support from Birmingham’s corporate sector was again central to the event’s success. It’s hard to believe after the wet year we’ve had, but it doesn’t take long for moisture in the upper layers of soil to evaporate in the warm sun and drying wind. Finally, later this month I’ll quietly mark an anniversary of my own: twelve years as the director here. So many people have helped me make that time productive, people that love The Gardens, people that came on as staff, and people offering words of encouragement. I hope I have thanked you all (profusely) as I have truly enjoyed it all. Moreover, I feel like I’m just hitting my stride. See you in The Gardens,

On October 4, Birmingham Botanical Gardens kicked off Antiques at The Gardens presented by IBERIABANK with Sterne Agee’s Gala in The Gardens. The annual black-tie event was reinvigorated for its eighth year, welcoming more than 600 guests to shop Alabama’s premiere antiques show before it opened to the public. Native Plant Group Gets a New Home: Compliments of Birmingham -Southern College Freshman Civic Engagement Day Taylor Steele, Volunteer Coordinator

Every year many colleges and universities host a service learning day for incoming freshman in order to connect them with the larger community. This program, along with student engagement opportunities, a great tool to introduce young adults to volunteerism. Often, this is a great way to further engage students into real-world situations that may or may not apply to their course work. More importantly, it strengthens their bond with their fellow students, local community organizations and the community as a whole. On Tuesday, August 27th the Native Plant Group picked up stakes and moved all the plants being grown for plant sales closer to the potting shed. While this may seem small, the effort had many variables, particularly one centered on the importance of service learning opportunities offered by colleges and universities for their students. Our story began with the Native Plant Group needing to be closer to the potting shed when moving plants that have just been potted up. Prior to August 27th, the task of moving plants up a rather steep incline to their lath house was becoming rather burdensome. When moving plant material on a nursery cart, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to forget that two or three flats can weigh over 80-100 pounds. Over two hours, it can become a workout!

The Gardens has a vested role in assisting its local academic community. Through its volunteer program, The Gardens offers many schools, colleges and universities the opportunity to volunteer with its projects and events. Volunteer Coordinator Taylor Steele was approached by our Native Plant Group coordinators regarding a request to find a solution. From a brief, but productive meeting, the sides found a solution: Birmingham-Southern College freshman.

The Gardens welcomes new Education Staff

Birmingham Botanical Gardens is pleased to welcome our new Education Activities Specialist Dawn Coleman. Dawn received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and her Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Museum Education from The George Washington University. Her

background includes working with museums and nonprofits in Birmingham and Washington D.C., including the newest Smithsonian museum, The National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the U.S. Botanical Garden. Dawn has created and led tours for informal learning environments, facilitated hands-on programs, and organized large and small educational outreach events. She will be coordinating our adult education and community outreach programs and supporting our childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s education, Plant Adventures and volunteer programs. Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Common witch-hazel is a large shrub that you could walk past every day and never notice a flower. Reason one: they are ¾-1½” wide, with thin, sometimes curling yellow petals, often hidden by leaves. Reason two: they occur in October-December, not a time when we typically are on the hunt for blossoms. But if you look closely, and smell carefully, they are quite marvelous, with a medicine-y aroma, occasionally with fruity overtones. Its pollinators, most often flies, are attracted to these scents which are often associated with rotting fruit or meat. Known as Hamamelis virginiana, the genus name means “together with fruit” and refers to the flowers occurring with ripening fruit from the prior years’ blooms. Listen carefully when the woody fruit capsules pop open, hurling the small black seeds up to 30’ away, and you’ll learn the origin of another common name: snapping hazel. The plant occurs as an understory shrub from Canada to central FL, virtually everywhere east of the Mississippi drainage and bridging west into AR, OK, LA and east TX. Usually sporting 2-5(7) main stems/trunks and sometimes a host of smaller stems, they can grow easily to 15x15’ and more. In the dense shade of a natural woodland the plant may appear rather sparse and open (and flower little), but in cultivation, especially in half-shade, the habit will be full and regular, the flowering substantial. In a famous 50-year maintenance study in New York’s Central Park, this plant was voted the most maintenance-free. Occasionally troubled by nipple gall, this harmless leaf deformity is alarming to people who like to spray away “problems.”

Witch-hazel is a curious name that comes to us from English immigrants who used the name in England to refer to a species of elm. Once in North America, the name was borrowed to refer to this common native plant. Hazel is also known as filbert, a European shrub long-cultivated for its tasty nut. Witch (in the plant’s name) likely comes down permutated from much older words like “wych” and “wice,” whose pronunciation is more like “wick” or “weak” than it appears to be. When you understand that those words mean “pliable” and “bendable” the name becomes even more illuminated. Whence witch? Folk etymology suggests the word shifted spelling due to the plant stems being commonly used for divining, a suspicious method of finding buried objects.

SHRUBS – Plant Shrubs, trees, and vines.

LAWNS – Some owners like lawn paints. Have you thought about having a green lawn this winter? Use proper herbicide to kill germinating winter weeds.

•

ROSES – Get rose plantings underway. Use a soil test as a basis for fertilization. Look for new varieties.

•

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Plant hardy annuals such as larkspur, poppies, pansies, anchusa, and candytuft. Get sweet peas into the ground.

•

BULBS – Continue spring bulb planting. Put lilies of the valley in a shady place.

•

MISCELLANEOUS – Plant screen plantings for privacy on the patio.

•

VEGETABLE SEED – Plant cabbage and lettuce in the coldframe.

December •

SHRUBS – Planting is still the main activity but delay in case of freezing weather.

•

LAWNS – Control wild garlic, chickweed, Poa annua, dandelion, and other weeds. Read label on each can of weed killer used.

•

ROSES – Add plants to rose garden. Mulch all plantings.

•

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Plant hardy annual seed without delay. Have you tried violas?

•

BULBS – Continue spring bulb planting.

•

MISCELLANEOUS – Shrubs, trees, and indoor plants make excellent holiday gifts.

ANOTHER RECORD YEAR FOR EDUCATION

The education staff has posted a record-setting year in 2012/13, demonstrating its on-going commitment to The Gardens’ mission of delivering excellent programs appreciated by Birmingham’s diverse community. Classes, field trips, lectures, films, exhibits and hands-on displays emphasize plants, gardening and the natural environment and the interactions of people with them. Universal access to programs – the inclusion of all who wish to participate - is the intent of the education staff and has much to do with the record setting numbers. Overall participation in all education programs in 2012/13 trended upward to a record high of 26,182 individuals, 4% over 2011/12, itself a record high, 8% over 2010/11. Participation of 15,314 children in 2012/13 was approximately equivalent to those participating in 2011/12 following a 12% increase over 2010/11. Participation of adults in 2012/13 was 10,868, 12% over 2011/12 following a 13% increase over 2010/11. Participation in Plant Adventures, headed by Jennifer Sanders, was up to a record high of 1,208 in 2012/13 from 937 participants in 2011/12 and 365 in 2010/11. Children’s Discovery Field Trips, headed by Ellen Hardy, exceeded 10,000 participants for the second year in a row, posting an increase of 9% in 2012/13 following a 4% increase in 2011/12. Children’s Summer Workshop increased to a record high of 280 participants. On-Site Adult Programs, headed by Dawn Coleman, increased to a record high of 7,231 participants. This included 625 participants in the Certificate of Native Plant Studies program, headed by John Manion, 15% up in its second year. The number of participating education volunteers increased 20% over 2011/12 with an increase of 2% in contributed hours, indicating more volunteers working fewer hours (19 hours/year/ volunteer). Volunteer Coordinator, Taylor Steele, also contributed considerably to education, organizing seminars, outreach activities and weekend programs. New education programs included “Get Into the Gardens” and “Sunday Scenes,” free for those visiting The Gardens on weekends. “Hikes for Tykes” with Fresh Air Family entered its fifth year of nature hikes for parents and children. Development of new programs included a new middle school Discovery Field Trip, “Plants Inside-Out,” on photosynthesis and respiration, to be launched in late 2013 and a seventh elementary field trip on pollinators to be launched in the fall of 2014. Partnership development with several new key organizations included the Birmingham Audubon Society, The Community Garden Coalition for Birmingham and the Environmental Initiative of Alabama.
