On The Cover On Thursday, June 7, the Junior Board of Birmingham Botanical presented Garden Mixology. Students learned the secrets of Dram master bartender Michael’s famous Mojito in “The Zone!” Michael Connors has been tending bar for five years and is currently serving delicious beverages at nearby Dram in Mountain Brook Village. Dram features Birmingham’s most extensive collection of bourbon, Scotch and various whiskeys. The Junior Board is a group of dedicated junior patrons who seek to increase awareness and involvement among their peers. They aim to increase diversity here at The Gardens, and host events and classes to achieve their goals and to help us fulfill our mission. Dear Friends: Things are gearing up for us here at the gardens as a summer of busy preparation swings into an even busier fall. Numerous events, classes and activities have our calendar packed and we hope you’ll share some of your time with all your friends here (or make new ones), whether at one of our early evening Cocktails at The Gardens, our reinvigorateded signature Antiques at The Gardens gala and show, or our always-anticipated Fall Plant Sale. Information about all of these and more are in this issue and always at www.bbgardens.org. Speaking of plants, a full slate of adult classes is sure to make you a better gardener, regardless of your level of expertise or area of gardening interest. We take pride in these offerings and the highly knowledgeable instructors we bring to you. Your feedback tells us we’re doing a great job, and keeps us looking for even better topics, teachers and trends to bring to you. Finally, as the weather cools, we begin what for me is the best gardening season. “Fall is For Planting” began as a marketing slogan for the Pennsylvania Nurseryman’s Association in the early 1980s. I was fortunate to work for a time for one of the people instrumental in coining this and bringing it to the fore. The late Bradshaw Snipes was a business visionary cloaked in the garb and demeanor of a humble Quaker nurseryman. His goal was to emphasize to the gardening public what nursery professionals have always known: fall is the best time to plant most things, particularly trees and shrubs. Our Own Superheroes: The Library Volunteers “Greatest education I’ve ever received without going back to school”. -Thelma Stichweh, Library Volunteer Superheroes have been around since the beginning of civilized society. The Greeks and Romans had tales of Odysseus and Hercules, while Northern Europe celebrated Thor and Beowulf. One thing these characters shared was their heroism, superhuman in strength and ability. Birmingham Botanical Gardens has its own superhero team, equipped with an uncanny knowledge of plants and the natural world, dedicated to helping assist our patrons with all available resources in The Library. At our disposal is a collection of more than 8,100 horticultural, botanical and natural science books, 60 magazine publications, an extensive children’s collection and an archived collection of rare books and donated artifacts. The Library at The Gardens has been serving the Birmingham community with the reliance of a volunteer staff for over 41 years. We’re fortunate to maintain our superhero team whose dedicated service has allowed sustained success. Superheroes inspire us to be extraordinary, and the efforts of our dedicated team are no exception. Volunteer Recognition: Joyce Dean

“The Thyme Lady” Joyce and Homer Dean began volunteering in 1992 with The Herb Army. Though Homer passed in 2002, his contributions and memory are celebrated with a memorial bench located in the Herb Terrace Garden. Joyce carries on her family’s spirit and enthusiasm, having earned the crown of “The Thyme Lady” after decades of ensuring the Herb Terrace displays the best varieties of thyme and for her hours of propagating and potting herbs for the Spring Plant Sale. “We all are very close. We just have a good time together,” Joyce says of her Herb Army comrades. Joyce embodies the spirit of volunteerism. She is one of many that helps The Gardens maintain its beauty year round. We’re honored to have Joyce as a part of our family and thankful for her service.

By now you’ve likely heard that Jason Kirby has become a permanent fixture at The Gardens. While his face is familiar, Kirby became a full-time addition to The Gardens’ staff after serving more than 11 years at the downtown Linn-Henley Research Library in the Tutwiler Collection of Southern History department. He utilizes a unique knowledge of special collections and extensive experience acquired, planting it at The Gardens and offering Birmingham fertile ground for educational growth.

Felder Rushing Author of Slow Gardening Believing that too many would-be gardeners are intimidated by a crush of how-to experts “We are daunted, not dumb,” he says, Felder uses an offbeat, down home approach rife with humorous anecdotes, garden-irreverent metaphors, zany observations and stunning photography to help gardeners get past the “stinkin’ rules” of horticulture.

Archives are as old as civilization. Since society has been capable, it has preserved its records for succeeding generations. As The Gardens evolves, it is vital to preserve our own institutional identity and heritage. Without thorough knowledge of our past, we will never appreciate the present. The Gardens is fortunate to cement Jason Kirby as the now full-time caretaker of this delicate and unique collection, offering Birmingham’s future generations a comprehensive physical history of Alabama’s largest living museum. Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Occasionally, The Gardens sponsors outings like our June trip to Newport, RI. One of my roles on these ventures is to report on the survivability in Birmingham of certain plants we see. Invariably, it’s a disappointing “no,” or a snarky “not for long.” Still, I encourage everyone to revel in this; why travel if all you see are the same plants in a different city? One stunner we saw at Blithewold Arboretum brought a different response: “perhaps.” Katsuratree, Cercidiphyllum japonicum, is virtually worshipped among exotic tree lovers. Full-grown specimens are lovely in all seasons, with a distinct appearance that combines beauty and grace with (eventual) substantial size. There are weeping cultivars (‘Pendula’ [left] and ‘Amazing Grace’ are two) and after ungainliness in youth, they assume great refinement as they age. To grow this deciduous Asian beauty in Birmingham demands proper siting; it is much more adaptable in more moderate climates. For us the critical issue is soil moisture; we can grow it (given ample room for crown and roots) as long as the soil is well-drained and consistently moist (not wet). Logically a stream- or lakeside situation would be optimal, the roots luxuriating in the cool, evenly damp conditions. A location with regular irrigation would work, too, but is not sustainable in severe drought. Sadly, not everyone can grow every plant they might desire – I do not have a place in my home garden for katsuratree and you probably don’t either. It doesn’t diminish my appreciation, and shouldn’t yours. Happily, we can enjoy the two specimens at the entrance to Blount Plaza here at The Gardens. Ornamentally unimportant, male and female flowers occur on separate trees; botanists say “dioecious,” from the Greek for “two houses.” The blue-green leaves [left] look like finer versions of redbud, the genus Cercis. Cercidiphyllum loosely translates as “double leaves like Cercis” and refers to the opposite leaf arrangement of the former, in contrast to the alternate arrangement of the latter.

Arguably, katsuratree’s best season is autumn, or more precisely, when the leaves color and fall. At its best, yellow overtones are blushed with peach, apricot and orange hues. More typical, especially for us, is a glorious bright yellow [right]. A variable feature is the evanescent aroma of brown sugar or cotton candy the senescing leaves emit – it’s delightful and unforgettable.

September SHRUBS-Study landscape to determine plant needs. Check early varieties of camellias. After fall growth is completed, spray all shrubs with a fungicide. LAWNS-Plant seed of winter grasses where situation prevents planting permanent grasses. Stop fertilization three weeks before frost. ROSES-Protect fall crops of blossoms from aphids and thrips. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS-Last chance for planting perennials and biennials. Old clumps of perennials may be divided. Plant peonies. BULBS-Spring-flowering bulbs may be planted late this month in North Alabama. Delay planting in South Alabama. MISCELLANEOUS-Build compost bin or box;. leaves will be falling soon. Move houseplants indoors. VEGETABLE SEED-Plant hardy vegetables and root crops. VEGETABLE PLANTS-Plant cabbage, collards, cauliflower, celery, Brussels sprouts, and onion sets.

October SHRUBS-Shrub plantings can be made. Water when needed. Note varieties of camellias in bloom. Start mulching all shrubs that do not have a mulch. ROSES-Continue insect and disease control practices. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS-Clean up flower beds immediately after first killing frost. BULBS--Plant tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses, Dutch irises, anemones, and ranunculuses. Watch planting depth. Dig caladiums; clean and store in warm place. MISCELLANEOUS-Renew mulch around shrubs and rose beds. Loosen mulches that have packed down. Spray with oils before freezing weather to kill scale, mites, etc. VEGETABLE SEED-Plant turnips, mustard, kale, rape, spinach, and onion sets.

One of World’s Rarest Plants Can be Found in Birmingham

Efforts to Save Tutwiler’s Spleenwort Continue at The Gardens

Fall Plant Sale

Birmingham Botanical Gardens continues to work in conjunction with the Alabama Plant Conservation Alliance (APCA) to increase numbers of Tutwiler’s spleenwort, a fern so rare that the Hale County location of its discovery, less than five acres of land, holds the only known population of its kind in the world. Here the plant grows on a distinctive type of conglomerate rock called pudding stone; at last count, just 180 plants were found. It is one of 24 plants endemic to the state of Alabama, and conservation efforts are underway in the greenhouses at The Gardens. Botanically speaking, the plant is known as Asplenium tutwilerae. It is named for Julia Strudwick Tutwiler, an amateur naturalist that discovered the fern in the 19th century. It was initially believed to be a sterile hybrid of ebony spleenwort and walking fern, but a recent discovery using newlydeveloped technology determined that it is a fertile hybrid that evolved through a process known as reticulate evolution. Through the efforts of naturalists Richard and Nancy Cobb, this fern has been closely monitored for the last several years in its natural habitat. Field counts there have indicated that the population is not stable. Recently, spores were collected and germinated by botanist Wayne Barger of Forever Wild and several tiny ferns were given to Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Now, these thrive in The Gardens’ greenhouse and several have been planted outside. Kaul Wildflower Garden Curator John Manion leads the APCA task force monitoring the fern’s population and exploring the purchase of the property where it naturally grows. In addition to protecting that environment, the group hopes to return specimens to the site and increase the population.
