Antiques at The Gardens:
Arts, Jewelry and Antiques is Reinvigorated for Seventh Year IBERIABANK proudly presents the seventh annual Antiques at The Gardens: Arts, Jewelry and Antiques at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, October 4 – 7, 2012. This year, Birmingham’s premiere antiques show will feature renowned tastemakers and dealers from across the country. Twelve architects, interior designers and landscape designers will curate themed areas such as “Beach House,” “The Library,” “Jewel Box,” “Let There Be Light,” “Mirror Mirror on the Wall” and “Secret Gardens” with goods selected from Birmingham and other regions of the country. The show will continue to include dealers from across the United States presenting antiques, furniture, porcelain, fine art, silver, garden accessories and jewelry. Tastemakers will join national dealers including: John Dennison Fine Art from North Myrtle Beach, SC, Thomas M. Fortner Antiques from Memphis, TN, Joseph M. Hayes from Columbus, OH, McDounough Fine Art from Atlanta, GA, Edwin C. Skinner Antiques from Fairhope, AL and Whitehall Antiques from Chapel Hill, NC. The Sterne Agee Gala in The Gardens kicks off the weekend’s festivities on Thursday, October 4 – an exclusive, black-tie event offering an opportunity for guests to shop in a cocktail environment before the sale opens to the public on Friday. This year’s Red Diamond Lecture Series will feature renowned chef Alex Hitz on Friday, October 5. An Atlanta native, Hitz regularly hosts elegant, Southernthemed dinner parties in his Los Angeles kitchen that have welcomed guests like former First Lady Nancy Reagan and Heiress Betsy Bloomingdale. His food line, “The Beverly Hills Kitchen,” is available exclusively through Home Shopping Network and he will be releasing a new cookbook this Fall. Hitz will be signing copies of his cookbook following the lecture, which will be available for purchase at the event.

V o lu n t e e r s Summer Teen Counselor Program 2012: Enriching Children, Inspiring Leadership Taylor Steele, Volunteer Coordinator
Upon returning to school, I remember the quintessential question that was always asked… “What did you do over summer vacation?” For many teens of the millennial generation, this has a very different meaning in 2012. The youth of today have a strong desire to be engaged with their local community. Teen volunteers often seek opportunities with local NonGovernment Organizations (NGOs) that foster critical social networks with other teens and adults. In addition, teen volunteers actively seek venues that enhance vital communication and leadership skills which colleges, universities, and employers look for on applications.

The Gardens Summer Teen Counselor Program plays a central role in supporting our Children’s Summer Camps held from May 29-July 27. The role of each counselor is to assist the camp instructor, as well as help oversee campers and engage the children in activities during camp hours. With all that encompasses a day camp routine which is quite a lot - camp counselors must be mature,
responsible, and able to work effectively with campers and other teen counselors. The Gardens’ Summer Teen Counselors (STCs) are trained to be sensitive to the needs of all campers. STCs learn to read verbal and nonverbal signals of young campers to effectively assist their needs or requests. The teens who work with our Children’s Summer Camps are developing their own sense of autonomy and confidence through their volunteer experience. They want to make a difference and lead others toward the future they envision. If you see one of our wonderful STC volunteers this summer, please thank them for a job well done! One day these young men and women will be our leaders, and we hope The Gardens will have contributed to their success. The Gardens introduces a newly merged collection that will complement The Archives and Rare Book Room, offering visitors an opportunity to relive its past with award winners spanning a 50-year history. Birmingham Botanical Gardens Awards and Trophy Collection is our personal trophy case – a collection of trophies, plates, trays, cups and bowls presented in recognition of The Gardens’ achievements. With some pieces dating to the 1940’s, these awards were given to various garden clubs and the Botanical Society. After careful restoration, these pieces are ready to shine as they are on permanent display in the Ireland Room of the Garden Center.

Certificate in Native Plant Studies Celebrates
One Year Anniversary John Manion, Kaul Wildflower Garden Curator
When Birmingham Botanical Gardens launched the Certificate in Native Plant Studies (CNPS) program one year ago, no one realized what a resounding success it would be. From its birth, classes filled to capacity, necessitating additional classes. To date, 471 spaces have been filled in CNPS classes and field trips by 147 individuals. Those participants have additionally completed 314 volunteer hours. Participants are allowed up to three years to complete the program, however, 13 individuals already qualify for certification. With important and paradigmchanging publications appearing, such as Doug Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home, it has become apparent that native plants hold an essential place in our landscapes – both cultivated and natural. This unique program has distinguished itself: •

By offering the opportunity to attend one class or all which are required for certification. The Gardens has devised a way for those becoming certified to remain certified by participating in a minimal number of classes annually. By offering expertise from instructors in their respective fields and many are (or were) college professors. This caliber of instructors brings with it,
in addition to a wealth of pertinent knowledge, a solid understanding of best educational methods. •
By giving attention to details in communications with participants, as well as the logistics of program events.
We eagerly look forward to refining and expanding this program over the next few years. It has become an integral component of The Gardens’ longstanding mission to educate, and further the study and conservation of our southeast native flora.
