As we settle into summer, many of us try to escape the heat by heading to cooler locales, perhaps to the beach or to the mountains. Plants in our fields, woodlands and gardens are, of course, not able to de-camp but must tough it out where they are. Gardeners wish, hope and pray for adequate rainfall, or fall back on irrigation systems and sweaty rituals of hose-dragging. The latter is my choice of low-impact exercise. Summer is a time to revel in the bounty of fresh vegetables, like those seen in the Bruno Vegetable Garden here at The Gardens. Most people know that the food produced here is donated to Magic City Harvest, our local food-distribution nonprofit, and has been feeding Birmingham’s hungriest for well over a decade. Sales of vegetable seeds in the US have doubled in only a few years. The number one reason for this astounding trend is surprisingly not “the economy,” but rather “food security,” as people seek the answer to the elemental question: Where does my food come from? I can’t imagine our grandparents pondering this.

It’s a terrific benefit of membership, as are our classes for adults and children, which continue through the heat of the season. Stepping out into Sunshine William M. Spencer, III: 1920-2010

One of Bill Spencer’s business associates said that talking to him was like “stepping out into sunshine.” We will miss that brightness—especially Bill’s humor and his enthusiasm for The Gardens. Bill’s daughter Nancy Spencer Smith jokes that her father had more snapshots of his clematis than of her as a child. Her sister, Murray Spencer South, laughs when she recalls her father’s “perfectly good” gold-painted garden boots left over from a costume ball. Son-in-law Joe South remembers Bill’s impressive horticultural library, eyeing with curiosity titles like The Joy of Bromeliads as he waited to pick up Murray for a date.

Bill loved growing zinnias for his first wife Evalina Brown Spencer’s arrangements. He had a fierce, though undeclared, competition with Beverley White Dunn as to who could produce the showiest zinnias on their neighboring lots at Lake Martin. Bill would pore over catalogues each winter and order seeds for the biggest, brightest and hardiest blossoms he could find. A chemist by training, his secret was to chemically pre-treat his plot on Maundy Thursday and plant the seeds on Good Friday. Beverly always wondered why his garden was not plagued with weeds.

Later, after the death of Evalina, Bill married Virginia Beeland Bissell. He established the Spencer Lecture Series at The Gardens in her honor. At the family farm in Gallion, Alabama, he planted fields of her favorite flowers every year—sunflowers—so that the sunshine he brought to so many could be multiplied a thousand times over.

Mark your calendars for October 1-3, as Antiques at The Gardens celebrates its fifth anniversary with dozens of exhibitors from across the nation filling the Garden Center with furniture, art, rugs, jewelry and other accessories. The weekend-long event commences on Thursday, September 30 with the Sterne Agee First Look Party. The glamorous black tie party offers guests a chance to browse the T merchandise while enjoying drinks and hors d’oeuvres. The general admission sale officially opens on Friday, October 1 at T 10 a.m. A special Designer Preview, sponsored by flower magazine, gives interior designers, architects and decorators a chance to shop with clients from 9-10 a.m. The Red Diamond Lecture Series w returns, bringing two world-class speakers with Southern roots to The Gardens. Floral and event designer DeJuan Stroud takes the T stage at 10:30 a.m., followed by interior designer Miles Redd at 1 p.m. Both men currently live in New York, where they run their own design studios.

Docents in The Gardens What makes The Gardens come alive for you? Is it the color? The biodiversity? The design? For many of our visitors, it is the personal touch found only when guided by a volunteer docent. Docents are at the heart of The Gardens’ mission, as they enhance the lives of visitors through informative tours and educational programs. Some, like Bob Wendorf and Margaret Bish in the Japanese garden, specialize in one garden; while others like newcomers Karen Mitchell, Judy Bacon and Neal Spangler enjoy such seasonal highlights as the Kaul Wildflower Garden, Fern Glade and Hosta Walk. Rose enthusiasts are in for a treat with Docents Gloria Purnell and Bob Eskew. Guests young and old are guided from woodlands to wildflowers and through the conservatory by the veteran trio of Linda Herren, Bitsy Williams

Rotary Club of Shades Valley Summer Internship 2010 Henry Hughes, Director of Education
For the third year in a row, the Rotary Club of Shades Valley has funded a ten-week summer internship at The Gardens for a college student. Katherine E. King, from Bristol, Tennessee and a recent graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, was selected from eight finalists representing five Alabama colleges and universities. Katie majored in biology, studying botany in Belize along the way. She has traveled extensively, most recently to Spain and Israel. Through the internship, Katie wants to further her knowledge of horticulture and plant taxonomy to aid her in future studies of plant adaptations to climate change. She plans to enter a Ph.D. program with the goal of teaching botany at the college level. Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Mid-summer in Alabama is definitely not “high time” for native flowering shrubs. But Aesculus parviflora; bottlebrush buckeye, Clethra alnifolia; sweet pepperbush, and Rhododendron arborescens; smooth azalea, are exceptions that probe the rule. Several of these need qualifications, so read on.

Sweet pepperbush (left) is uncommon in central Alabama, and is always found in consistently moist soils. Cultivated varieties here at The Gardens start flowering in late June and continue to late July and early August with ‘September Beauty’. Forms observed in the wild, particularly near Weogufka in Coosa County, follow that late example. Most forms of smooth azalea (right) flower in mid-May in Alabama, and its sweet, heady fragrance is delightful. But in a curious botanical anomaly, populations of this shrub in southcentral Alabama (the southernmost extension of its range, which begins in New York) skip this early showing and bloom in late July; some individuals will flower into September. Further study is needed to determine if these are distinct from others of their kind, and warrant taxonomic recognition. Unfortunately, I’m not aware of any cultivars of late-flowering individuals being in the trade, although late-flowered seedlings can occasionally be found in specialty nurseries.

Garde ning Tips for July/August
JULY Protect figs and other ripening fruit from birds. Continue to root shrub cuttings until late in the month and mulch to keep soil moist. Remove faded blooms promptly from crape myrtle and other summer-blooming plants. In lawns, watch for diseases. Mow regularly, and water as needed. Keep roses healthy and actively growing. Apply fertilizer as needed. Wash off foliage to prevent burning if any fertilizer falls on plants. Water annuals and perennials as needed to keep plants active. Iris and spider lily bulbs may be planted late this month. Keeping flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns healthy is the major task this month. This demands close observation for insects and diseases, and frequent watering. Plant beans, field peas, rutabagas, squash, New Zealand spinach, and Irish potatoes. Plant cabbage, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and celery for the fall crop. Plant tomatoes in Central and North Alabama.

Earth Day at The Gardens 2010 Henry Hughes, Director of Education
At least 1,400 people attended Earth Day at the Gardens on April 25, a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the ďŹ rst Earth Day and recognition of Birmingham’s multi-faceted environmental community. Welcoming attendees in the entrance plaza was Australian-born Neil Ross, demonstrating droning outback rhythms on his didgeridoos. In the Formal Garden, 34 vendors surrounded the lawns, representing environmental organizations, businesses and governmental agencies. A special line-up of entertainment, centered at the Conservatory, kicked off with Steve
Guesman’s band, the OxyMorons. Then came the colorful Okinawan Festival Drums with the Seibukan Karate School demonstration, the Umdabu Dance Company’s traditional Zulu dancing and Rhythm Synergy’s Children’s Drum Circle. In the auditorium, the Roaming Dome, an inatable theater from SciQuest in Huntsville, captured the attention of up to forty children at a time, who viewed science videos on molecules, weather and the solar system. An Amazing Year for Education Ellen Hardy, Education Program Coordinator
Discovery Field Trips at The Gardens have a heartbeat and personality: volunteers. This academic year, Birmingham Botanical Gardens volunteers and Junior League of Birmingham volunteers guided 10,000 students on quality educational programs at The Gardens. Learning objectives are based on Alabama content standards to introduce or extend science, even history topics taught in schools while in nature’s outdoor setting at The Gardens. Each volunteer team has many admirable qualities, giving strength to the program. They have immense passion and are welcoming to teachers and students alike. Each team uses their own unique teaching style to ensure that students have fun and engaging learning experiences. Teachers consistently give positive feedback, and many return to bring yet a new group of students. So thank you volunteers, you are a gift to The Gardens and we are grateful every day for your support! You really do make a difference.
