Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Antiques at The Gardens celebrated its seventh year at Birmingham Botanical Gardens in style, kicking off the event with the glamorous, Sterne Agee Gala in The Gardens on October 4. More than 550 guests attended the elegant evening, complete with a tent and live music from the Tip Tops (as seen on the cover). Presented by IBERIABANK this year, Antiques at The Gardens featured Tastemakers who are regionally and nationally known architects, interior designers and landscape designers. Each designer curated themed areas with goods selected from the best of Birmingham and other sources around the country. The show continued to include dealers from across the United States presenting antiques, furniture, porcelain, fine art, silver, garden accessories and jewelry. As 2012 comes to a close, I’d like to thank our members, donors, volunteers and staff. With your help, we served over 17,600 schoolchildren during the 2011-2012 academic year, and 98% participated for free. Among them was the 85,000th student who attended our hands-on Discovery Field Trips, which started in 1998. During the same time, adult programs were up 15%, attracting more than 11,700 people. Thanks to you, we’re meeting our mission better than ever. Learn more about our outstanding program highlights in this issue. Corporate support was integral to the success of Antiques at The Gardens for 2012, and we so thank IBERIABANK, Sterne-Agee and Red Diamond for their generous support. Our re-imagined event was everything we hoped it would be and Chair Tricia Holbrook and her committee deserve rock star-status for its new look. And for those who patronized our Fall Plant Sale, you’ve got plenty of time to get your selections planted, but remember that the sooner you get them in the ground, the quicker they will generate roots in preparation for spring. Also, make sure they are adequately watered if they’re still awaiting planting. My goal is to finish with my planting before Thanksgiving! I just need a beautiful weekend or two. On October 4, Birmingham Botanical Gardens kicked off Antiques at The Gardens presented by IBERIABANK with Sterne Agee’s Gala in The Gardens. The annual black-tie event was reinvigorated for its seventh year, welcoming more than 550 guests to shop Alabama’s premiere antiques show before it opened to the public. This year offered cuisine from some of Birmingham’s finest culinary Tastemakers, including: Veranda on Highland, Fleming’s, Gianmarco’s, Ocean, Kathy G. & Company and daniel george. Author Alex Hitz mingled among the crowd before his appearance at the Red Diamond Lecture and Luncheon on Friday. Lobby Flowers Spotlight:

Flowers Improve Emotional Health Taylor Steele, Volunteer Coordinator

It seems each week someone is commenting on the wonderful flower arrangements in the Garden Center lobby. Each compliment comes with genuine joy and there’s a scientific link to this phenomena. Dr. Jeannette-Haviland-Jones, a Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University, has studied the direct correlation of the presence of flowers to human emotions and health. The mere presence of flowers, either at home or in a public building triggers happiness, heightens feelings of satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner far beyond preconceived notion. Dr. Haviland-Jones states, “What’s most exciting about this study is that it challenges established scientific beliefs about how people can manage their day-to-day moods in a healthy and natural way.” Her research also indicated a strong correlation between flowers Floral Arrangement by: Brenda and life satisfaction. A ten-month study of participants found that flowers can have an Warren, Birmingham Alabama immediate impact on happiness. Flowers can also have a long-term positive effect on moods, and can decrease the presence of stress, anxiety and depression. The weekly floral arrangements that bring beauty to the Garden Center are created by volunteers who perhaps haven’t read Dr. Haviland-Jones’s study, but know first-hand how they feel around a beautiful arrangement. Dr. Jones’s study also finds that arrangements placed in areas that are open to visitors, like foyers, are symbolic of sharing. One cannot dispute these findings, but rather embrace the fact that The Gardens would love to have more people share their love for arranging flowers with our guests. Arrangers receive up to $75 for plant materials which is made possible by donations from garden clubs across Alabama.

Volunteer Education Classes: It Happens Organically!

Volunteers at Birmingham Botanical Gardens are our extended education family. They assist with docent trainings, plant propagation classes, garden workdays, adult programs, field trips, office tasks and the library, to name just a few roles. They are dependable family and community members who, in addition to providing valuable volunteer support to The Gardens, attend classes or training sessions offered at The Gardens for continued education. Why? Many say that it’s fellowship with other volunteers and an opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of plants. They’ve cited “learning new things about plants and gardening” as primary motivation to continue volunteering at The Gardens.

Volunteer Instructors Make it Happen!

Volunteer instructors are a critical element to our education program. Volunteers are connected through many opportunities including the plant groups that meet and work at The Gardens. Our volunteers possess a wealth of information which has proven valuable in passing on knowledge of plants like natives, herbs, perennials and ferns. from the Archives and Rare Book Room: Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ Conservatory will soon be 50 years old! Before the Garden Center (1971), the Floral Clock (1963), and the Japanese Gardens (1967) there was the Conservatory. It was built while we were still a part of the Birmingham Zoological and Botanical Society. The Conservatory construction bid was awarded on May 18, 1961 to Wilborn Construction Co. for their bid of $161.422. The ground-breaking was held at 2:30 p.m. on September 19, 1961, officiated by Birmingham Mayor James W. “Jimmy” Morgan. He formally opened the Conservatory on Tuesday, December 18, 1962. One of the first visitors was Mr. A.E. Jones of Homewood. In 1982, during our 20th anniversary celebration, he donated admission ticket #000001, and a portion of an 8mm film that he shot on opening day. Birmingham Botanical Society officially incorporated and separated from the zoo on October 27, 1964. We think a renovation, the first phase of which is now underway, is a great 50th birthday present for our wonderful crystal gem!

Good Things Growing…

I would dislike living in a place without deciduous trees to mark the seasonal change. I revel in tree architecture, visibly laid bare by dormancy, revealing the fractal-like patterns of their branching. In the tree identification classes I teach, I urge students to appreciate the trees’ gestalt, and to absorb the uniqueness of each species. At the same time, determining identity requires a focus on the details. Dormant season ID is aided by bark characteristics; with leaves gone, or out of reach in the canopy, bark may be the only feature at hand. Here are five examples of common Alabama native trees in the Barber Alabama Woodlands; all are important to native biodiversity. The images tell a tale that mathematicians describe with chaos theory, and that sharp-eyed citizen scientists can use to learn more about the other living organisms in our woodlands.

Many people know sweet gum by its mace-like fruit and Liquidambar styraciflua is an important pioneer species throughout its broad range. Its bark illustrates well the term “ridged and furrowed.” The tops of the vertically arranged ridges are like low, flat, smooth plateaus, pale silver/gray in color, with patches of medium-brown where the surface has flaked. Their long and narrow shapes are defined by shallow, almost-black furrows that run vertically and horizontally. The “eye” is the attachment point of a shed branch. Liriodendron tulipifera, tulip poplar or yellow poplar, is unrelated to tulips and poplars, being in the magnolia family. The bark is pale brown-gray, tinged yellow; the ridges have rounded surfaces. Note how the furrows only run vertically and are pale in color, resulting in an elongated diamond pattern.

black gum, Nyssa sylvatica

Black gum, Nyssa sylvatica, shows it shiny red fall color earlier than most deciduous trees. I learned the bark as “alligator hide.” The low, flat, and rough-surfaced ridges are multi-sided polygons of medium gray and the ridges are dark gray, running in all directions. Now the most common pine in the southeast, loblolly pine, Pinus taeda, has magnificent bark, especially on older specimens. The ridges are large irregular plates with strong geometry, the surfaces flat and silver-gray, flaking off in thin sheets to reveal orange-cinnamon tones. The ridges are deep and rather wide, dark gray in color.

Quercus falcata, southern red oak, has bark typical for a number of the “red oak group” whose members have leaves with pointed not rounded lobes (which comprise the white oak group). Other “reds” in our area include black oak, Q. velutina, scarlet oak, Q. coccinea, and Shumard oak, Q. shumardii. The ridges are rough and chunky, and the furrows only slightly darker gray in color.

SHRUBS – Plant shrubs, trees and vines. LAWNS – Some owners like lawn paints. Have you thought about having a green lawn this winter? Use proper herbicide to kill germinating winter weeds. ROSES – Get rose plantings underway. Use a soil test as a basis for fertilization. Look for new varieties. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Plant hardy annuals such as larkspur, poppies, pansies, anchusa, and candytuft. Get sweet peas into the ground. BULBS – Continue spring bulb planting. Put lilies of the valley in a shady place. MISCELLANEOUS – Plant screen plantings for privacy on the patio. VEGETABLE SEED – Plant cabbage and lettuce in the coldframe.

SHRUBS – Planting is still the main activity but delay in case of freezing weather. LAWNS – Control wild garlic, chickweed, Poa annua, dandelion, and other weeds. Read label on each can of weed killer used. ROSES – Add plants to rose garden. Mulch all plantings. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Plant hardy annual seed without delay. Have you tried violas? BULBS – Continue spring bulb planting. MISCELLANEOUS – Shrubs, trees, and indoor plants make excellent holiday gifts.

“Traditions and Transitions” Thursday, March 7 | 6:30 p.m. The 15th annual Spencer Lecture will feature two speakers on Thursday, March 7 at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Linn-Henley Lecture Hall. There will be a reception prior to the evening lecture from 5:30 6:30 p.m. and a coffee will be held before the morning lecture beginning at 10 a.m. This free annual event brings award-winning landscape architect Ben Page to Birmingham Botanical Gardens for an intriguing talk titled “Traditions and Transitions.” The Gardens will also welcome Andrea Wulf for

the second year, offering an additional lecture in the Spencer Lecture Series to complement Ben Page’s talk. Andrea will speak about the first world-wide scientific project and its impact which includes many plant discoveries. For Adults Adults who pursued educational enrichment through The Gardens ��29,400+ Program topics: include gardening, botany, nature-related art, floral design, naturalist themes (e.g., birding), botanical crafts and cooking, photography, health and wellness. Certificate in Native Plant Studies: (est. May 2011) in-depth program raises awareness of the environmental importance and value of these plants; curriculum consists of core classes, electives, field trips and volunteer service to provide broad yet balanced instruction in botany, taxonomy, ecology, conservation and uses of native southeastern flora. Rotary Club of Shades Valley Internship: (est. May 2008) a 12-week paid internship focusing on botanical garden operations and management; institutions represented include Birmingham-Southern College, Miles College, Samford University, University of Alabama and University of Montevallo.
