Jenn is the Program Director at Black Warrior Riverkeeper, a Master Gardener, has worked locally at the Southern Environmental Center’s EcoScape Gardens, Mt. Laurel Organic Farm, and is an enthusiastic volunteer for The Gardens and other community organizations. Jenn takes advantage of her position with Black Warrior Riverkeeper to explore and photograph some of the most beautiful river and woodland habitats in the country. Trees and shrubs that establish in winter are better able to withstand summer heat and drought (and we know that will be here soon enough)! Volunteer Spotlight: Gail Pless & Ruth Varnell Mary-Bestor Grant, Volunteer Coordinator

Winter months at The Gardens may bring shorter days and dormant perennials, but for Education Docents Gail Pless and Ruth Varnell, the season is a flurry of curious children and creative activities. Gail and Ruth have been partnering to lead school children on Discovery Field Trips for more than nine years, commenting “[Discovery Field Trips] is a great gift to the community. Every single field trip we see a different aspect of connecting with kids. Their faces light up with gratitude.” Both women take extra time from their busy schedules to ensure a unique experience for each child. Before each Garden Gates field trip, Gail visits the florist that morning so that each child can investigate their own flower. She places one at each student’s place before they arrive. Our volunteer’s families are involved too. Ruth’s father collects nature items from his farm in South Alabama and mails them to incorporate into field trips. These items – from fossils to deer sheds – never arrive without research accompanying them! Gail’s son earned his Eagle Scout badge building structures in our Native American area, and her daughters are always at her side during HollyDay Magic, this duo’s second volunteer endeavor.

Gail and Ruth took part in the founding meetings of The Gardens’ popular children’s event, HollyDay Magic, scheduled for December 9 and 10 this year. Volunteers lead children ages 5-12 in creating a craft using natural materials. According to Gail, “it is a great way to learn holiday tips – we all get our chance to be Martha Stewart for 15 minutes!” Asked about her 10 years of experience in The Gardens’ volunteer community, Gail said, “out of everything I have done and all the places I have been, gardeners are the kindest, most humble people on the planet.” Well-said, and well-deserved! Join Gail and Ruth this year for HollyDay Magic 2010! Volunteers are needed throughout the month of November to assist our education staff prepare craft materials for the 200-plus children who will attend, as well as during the event! You’re forgiven for mispronouncing cotoneaster: because their usefulness in the southeast is limited, they’re just not well-known. Don’t say “cotton-easter”; instead, say three body parts, working from the ground up [koh-TOE-neeass-ter]. Got it? Cotoneaster is in the rose family, with 70400 accepted species, depending on the authority. Only two species stand out for general use in Birmingham. Both provide evergreen leaves and excellent fruit in the fall (one, through winter). Insect and disease resistance are the keys to local success; many cotoneasters will “live” here but will typically and quickly succumb to pests.

Fine Crafts Classic sponsored by Alabama Designer Craftsmen and the 3rd District Federated Garden Club

Saturday, November 13 | 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, November 14 | 11 a.m.-5 p.m. This juried show is an annual tradition featuring hand built and wheel thrown pottery, woodworking, handmade baskets, leaded and slumped glass, silver and other handmade jewelry, fiber works including hooked wall hangings and quilts, weaving and spinning, blacksmithing and copper working, printmaking, stone sculpture and many other traditional crafts. There will also be a children’s corner with activities provided by the artists. There will be door prizes as well! The Fine Craft Classic is free and open to the public with a suggested $3 donation. Last year, we received a special gift from Japan: Kazunori Tago, the famed designerbuilder of To-shin-an, our Sukiya-style tea house, donated a suikinkutsu, or “water cave,” a traditional feature in many rusticstyle tea gardens. Imagine a large ceramic olive jar, with a flat lid which is pierced with various-sized holes, and you have the idea. Suikinkutsu (see right) are buried adjacent to tsukubai, small washing basins which receive water fed through bamboo pipes (kakei). Tea ceremony guests visit this feature for symbolic cleansing prior to the ceremony. As water slowly overflows the tsukubai, it John McNabb sets the “Water Cave” drains through decorative stones and into the suikinkutsu, which acts as a chamber and subtly magnifies the sounds of the dripping water into a soft serenade. Since the source of the gentle music is hidden from view, it adds a pleasantly mysterious quality to the experience. Installation of our suikinkutsu and renovation of the tsukubai was recently completed with funding from the Lucille Beeson Charitable Trust.

A New Tradition in the Fern Glade Honoring Sue Clisby As the only child of fern fancier Martha Woodruff “Sue” Clisby and her husband Vivian, Suzanne Clisby (below) traveled the South in back of a station wagon with her parents and their friends Ida and Joe Burns on botanizing trips. Suzanne remembers many good-natured arguments about who would pay for gas! Sue was one of the founders of the Birmingham Fern Society and a loyal volunteer until her death in 2008. Recently her daughter Suzanne gave a generous endowment gift in her mother’s name to help support the Fern Glade, and thus became a member of The Perennial Society. The Clisby donation is part of the endowment that safeguards the future of The Gardens. (The Friends endowment is professionally managed and overseen by the Finance Committee and governed by our investment and spending policies.) Suzanne hopes that others will follow her example and contribute to the endowment that supports the Fern Glade or other areas of The Gardens that are meaningful to them. Basic Studio Lighting Techniques Instructor: Steve Higginbotham Sunday, November 21 |1-6 p.m. $95

This class provides an entry level, hands-on experience for photographers seeking to broaden their skills, especially those who are entering the field of studio portraiture. You will learn the various types of lighting controls and devices, light metering, understanding light, composition and posing. Class sessions will begin with an instructional session, then each student will be allowed time to practice using studio lighting with a model(s). Students also learn to apply studio lighting concepts to location portraiture. Students must have an SLR or DSLR with a hot shoe or PC connection, must be able to set “manual mode” exposure settings and have a working knowledge of shooting in manual exposure mode.

Gardens Backpacks

This fall, The Gardens’ expands its on site, curriculum-based educational opportunities through the newly designed Garden Backpacks program. Backpacks have been designed with two specific age groups in mind, but casual visitors of all ages are equally encouraged to enjoy this new activity, free of charge. Our preschool backpacks change seasonally and are based on the Alabama Performance Standards for four year olds. Teachers use the backpack kits to introduce young inquisitive minds to the world of nature and science exploration waiting to be discovered at The Gardens. Early engagement in hands-on science is a proven solution for building a foundation for life long learning. Young children are naturally talented scientists, given the opportunity and the perfect setting at The Gardens. Teachers are sure to feel confident when they use the instructions in the pack as well as children’s literature and activities which will make the experience memorable for young visitors. Middle and high school students will use The Gardens’ Big Tree Trail backpacks on a quest for knowledge of tree identification. Objectives enrich the Alabama Course of Study, Science and exercise students’ skills for science during their visit. Objectives aside, the young adults will enjoy exploring the winding paths while they discover The Gardens’ diverse collection of trees. Email ehardy@bbgardens.org to reserve your backpack today.
