Jenn Patterson, an amateur photographer from Birmingham, contributed the cover photo of a trio inspecting Salvia at The Gardens’ 2010 Fall Plant Sale. Jenn is the Program Director at Black Warrior Riverkeeper, a Master Gardener, has worked locally at the Southern Environmental Center’s EcoScape Gardens, Mt. Laurel Organic Farm, and is an enthusiastic volunteer for The Gardens and other community organizations. Jenn takes advantage of her position with Black Warrior Riverkeeper to explore and photograph some of the most beautiful river and woodland habitats in the country. She also loves to travel and capture the local spirit and culture in pictures. “This photo captures various shades of green, blue and purple, providing a cool, contemplative contrast in this fall season, just as The Gardens provide a relaxing contrast to the hustle and bustle around us.” It isn’t too late to submit your own photograph to be considered for an upcoming issue. As we begin the holiday season, I want to thank you, our loyal supporters, on behalf of all of us here at The Gardens. Whether you’re a donor, member or volunteer – or all three – or your support is through a business, foundation or as an individual – or all three – you’re the reason for the success of our recent fall events, and all of our programs and activities throughout the past year. In difficult times, your support is even more important, and we’re very mindful of that and don’t ever want to take you for granted. We’re grateful that we are among the very worthy organizations and institutions, in Birmingham and beyond, that you support. Please consider a year-end gift when you see our solicitation in the mail, or donate now, online at www.bbgardens.org or by calling Savannah Lanier at 205.414.3955. Speaking pragmatically, I’m still amazed by how many people are not aware of the benefits of fall and winter installation of hardy woody plants. It’s simply the best season; even if we have a frost or brief freeze, our soils remain workable. Planting in sopping wet soil is never a good idea, so avoid that, but keep planting. We are. Trees and shrubs that establish in winter are better able to withstand summer heat and drought (and we know that will be here soon enough)! Please enjoy this last issue of 2010, which contains our 2009 Annual Report featuring the important milestones you helped us achieve throughout that year. Bear in mind our mission of educating people about plants, gardens and the environment, and you’ll read about the many ways our dedicated and professional staff focus on it and achieve it. The report also acknowledges, in a small way, you. So I’ll close with one more, big “thank you,” and wish you a safe, happy holiday season. See You in The Gardens,

Volunteers

Volunteer Spotlight: Gail Pless & Ruth Varnell Mary-Bestor Grant, Volunteer Coordinator

Winter months at The Gardens may bring shorter days and dormant perennials, but for Education Docents Gail Pless and Ruth Varnell, the season is a flurry of curious children and creative activities. Gail and Ruth have been partnering to lead school children on Discovery Field Trips for more than nine years, commenting “[Discovery Field Trips] is a great gift to the community. Every single field trip we see a different aspect of connecting with kids. Their faces light up with gratitude.” Both women take extra time from their busy schedules to ensure a unique experience for each child. Before each Garden Gates field trip, Gail visits the florist that morning so that each child can investigate their own flower. She places one at each student’s place before they arrive. Our volunteer’s families are involved too. Ruth’s father collects nature items from his farm in South Alabama and mails them to incorporate into field trips. These items – from fossils to deer sheds – never arrive without research accompanying them! Gail’s son earned his Eagle Scout badge building structures in our Native American area, and her daughters are always at her side during HollyDay Magic, this duo’s second volunteer endeavor.

Ruth Varnell helps children with a craft project at HollyDay Magic.

Gail Pless (right) and another volunteer prepare their craft station for HollyDay Magic.

Gail and Ruth took part in the founding meetings of The Gardens’ popular children’s event, HollyDay Magic, scheduled for December 9 and 10 this year. Volunteers lead children ages 5-12 in creating a craft using natural materials. According to Gail, “it is a great way to learn holiday tips – we all get our chance to be Martha Stewart for 15 minutes!” Asked about her 10 years of experience in The Gardens’ volunteer community, Gail said, “out of everything I have done and all the places I have been, gardeners are the kindest, most humble people on the planet.” Well-said, and well-deserved! Join Gail and Ruth this year for HollyDay Magic 2010! Volunteers are needed throughout the month of November to assist our education staff prepare craft materials for the 200-plus children who will attend, as well as during the event! Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Fred Spicer, Executive Director

You’re forgiven for mispronouncing cotoneaster: because their usefulness in the southeast is limited, they’re just not well-known. Don’t say “cotton-easter”; instead, say three body parts, working from the ground up [koh-TOE-neeass-ter]. Got it? Cotoneaster is in the rose family, with 70400 accepted species, depending on the authority. Only two species stand out for general use in Birmingham. Both provide evergreen leaves and excellent fruit in the fall (one, through winter). Insect and disease resistance are the keys to local success; many cotoneasters will “live” here but will typically and quickly succumb to pests.

It can handle deep shade, but you will miss the small white flowers in May (actually they are easily missed when present, too); more importantly, the fireengine red, 3/8” diameter fruit, borne in dense clusters up to 4” across, will The dark green leaves and irregular not form and this habit of Parney’s cotoneaster in the BBG remarkable display is parking lot contrasts nicely with the more Parney cotoneaster’s stoic hollies beyond.

Alternatively, it makes The overall form of Franchett’s cotoneaster one of the most is more regular than Parney’s, but the beautiful espaliers overall habit is slightly more open. I’ve seen. Cotoneaster franchetii, Franchet’s or orangebead (orange) cotoneaster, can be viewed as a somewhat stiffer-growing, slightly more dense and regularly-shaped version of the above plant, with a few key differences. Leaves are about one-third the size and gray-green in comparison. The fruit are orange-red, borne in much smaller clusters, and do not typically persist through the winter. Site tolerances are similar; you could plant this on your local highway, too, but cotoneasters have a reputation as litter-catchers, the dense branching snagging all manner of falling or blowing debris, and this plant will collect some leaves. A location out from under trees solves this nicely.

Last year, we received a special gift from Japan: Kazunori Tago, the famed designerbuilder of To-shin-an, our Sukiya-style tea house, donated a suikinkutsu, or “water cave,” a traditional feature in many rusticstyle tea gardens. Imagine a large ceramic olive jar, with a flat lid which is pierced with various-sized holes, and you have the idea. Suikinkutsu (see right) are buried adjacent to tsukubai, small washing basins which receive water fed through bamboo pipes (kakei). Tea ceremony guests visit this feature for symbolic cleansing prior to the ceremony. As water slowly overflows the tsukubai, it John McNabb sets the “Water Cave” drains through decorative stones and into the suikinkutsu, which acts as a chamber and subtly magnifies the sounds of the dripping water into a soft serenade. Since the source of the gentle music is hidden from view, it adds a pleasantly mysterious quality to the experience. Installation of our suikinkutsu and renovation of the tsukubai was recently completed with funding from the Lucille Beeson Charitable Trust.

A New Tradition in the Fern Glade Honoring Sue Clisby As the only child of fern fancier Martha Woodruff “Sue” Clisby and her husband Vivian, Suzanne Clisby (below) traveled the South in back of a station wagon with her parents and their friends Ida and Joe Burns on botanizing trips. Suzanne remembers many good-natured arguments about who would pay for gas! Sue was one of the founders of the Birmingham Fern Society and a loyal volunteer until her death in 2008. Recently her daughter Suzanne gave a generous endowment gift in her mother’s name to help support the Fern Glade, and thus became a member of The Perennial Society. The Clisby donation is part of the endowment that safeguards the future of The Gardens. (The Friends endowment is professionally managed and overseen by the Finance Committee and governed by our investment and spending policies.) Suzanne hopes that others will follow her example and contribute to the endowment that supports the Fern Glade or other areas of The Gardens that are meaningful to them. For information about endowment gifts, please contact Olivia Alison, Director of Development at 205.414.3961 or oalison@bbgardens.org.

You can’t forget a garden When you have planted seed— When you have watched the weather And know a rose’s need. -Louise Driscoll, American Poet In this season of thanksgiving and gift giving, we give thanks for you who keep Birmingham Botanical Gardens flourishing in spite of difficult times. Because of your generosity, we have not had to cut back on our programs or our staff. We are working diligently to keep The Gardens beautiful, educational, peaceful and free to all, but we can’t do it with out your continued help. Please invest in your community by giving a yearend gift to The Gardens.

New for Preschool to High School Students:

Gardens Backpacks

Ellen Hardy, Education Program Coordinator

This fall, The Gardens’ expands its on site, curriculum-based educational opportunities through the newly designed Garden Backpacks program. Backpacks have been designed with two specific age groups in mind, but casual visitors of all ages are equally encouraged to enjoy this new activity, free of charge. Our preschool backpacks change seasonally and are based on the Alabama Performance Standards for four year olds. Teachers use the backpack kits to introduce young inquisitive minds to the world of nature and science exploration waiting to be discovered at The Gardens. Early engagement in hands-on science is a proven solution for building a foundation for life long learning. Young children are naturally talented scientists, given the opportunity and the perfect setting at The Gardens. Teachers are sure to feel confident when they use the instructions in the pack as well as children’s literature and activities which will make the experience memorable for young visitors. Middle and high school students will use The Gardens’ Big Tree Trail backpacks on a quest for knowledge of tree identification. Objectives enrich the Alabama Course of Study, Science and exercise students’ skills for science during their visit. Objectives aside, the young adults will enjoy exploring the winding paths while they discover The Gardens’ diverse collection of trees. Email ehardy@bbgardens.org to reserve your backpack today. Adventure awaits! As with most of The Gardens educational programs, use of the Garden Backpacks is offered free-of-charge. However, each Garden Backpack costs $300 to assemble and we need at least six backpack kits. If you would like to help fund a backpack kit, please contact Olivia Alison at 205.414.3961 or oalison@bbgardens.org.

For reservations or more information please contact Phyllis Sutton at 205.414.3958 or psutton@bbgardens.org.
