Dear Friends: If you’re reading this newsletter, chances are you’re already a supporter of Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and have made one or more kinds of personal investments in this organization. On behalf of everyone who works here at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and our visitors that number in the hundreds of thousands, it is my privilege to extend our sincere gratitude for another outstanding year. We are fortunate to have over 1,000 active volunteers who support our educational programs, special events, gardening activities, and administrative work. With their help, our work is multiplied; many of these dedicated people are members as well, over 2,700 strong as of this writing. If this sounds like a relatively low number, consider that the main benefit of such memberships is typically unlimited admission. For a cultural institution which is free 365 days a year, this is a very good number. Many of our volunteers and members also support us through philanthropic giving – funds given with no quid pro quo: no free classes, no early-bird parties, and no special perks. We deeply appreciate each and every gift of time, talent and treasure, but philanthropy represents a true gift of the heart, with nothing expected in return except the continued delivery of our mission to educate people about plants, gardens and the environment. We put your gifts to work, too: for every dollar we spend, seventy-one cents is spent on programming. You can see ample evidence of this work in our Comprehensive Report on Education at www.bbgardens.org. Now, as we enter this season of giving, please consider Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens as the beneficiary of a philanthropic gift from your heart. The more we do, the more we depend on you.

The Orchid Thief: A Memorial to Sandra Sokol 1935-2007 Dedication Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 5 pm Sculptor Frank Fleming was a dear friend of Sandra Sokol, long-time volunteer at The Gardens and orchid fancier, making his commission for the memorial even more meaningful. Frank rose to the challenge of creating a bronze phaleonopsis and placed it in the paws of one of his signature rabbits. The sculpture made its debut at this year’s Alabama Orchid Society show and now resides near the entrance to the Conservatory. Please join us as we dedicate the memorial outside at 5 p.m. on Tuesday November 25, followed by a reception with members of the Alabama Orchid Society in the Hodges Room. We will celebrate Sandra and thank her family and friends who helped fund the memorial. If you would like to contribute, please contact Stefanie Blakely at 205.414.3955.

A Story of Giving – Fay Ireland Development Director, Olivia Alison

Watch out for Fay Baby—the new bright orange fork lift christened by the greenhouse staff in honor of Fay Belt Ireland! The fork lift is part of Fay’s major gift to improve the potting shed “where the greenhouse staff and volunteers do their work.” Her donation has also funded a new ice machine, a new garage door, cushy floor mats, stainless steel soil tables on motorized lifts and high intensity lighting. In the works are new office spaces for greenhouse staff members Linda Emerson and Gregg Clark, an office for security and windows for the staff break room. A volunteer room and a canopy connecting the potting shed with the restrooms and production houses are also planned. Through her thoughtful donation, Fay is helping us make The Gardens a safer and more pleasant place to work and volunteer. Fay’s philanthropy has touched many Alabamians, especially those involved in public health, education and the environment. A nurse herself, she supports the UAB Alabama School of Nursing and that of her alma mater Cornell University. Fay was also a founder of Glenwood, the Autism and Behavioral Health Center. Through their sponsorship of the Discovering Alabama program on Alabama Public Television, Fay and her husband Bill have exposed millions of people to the natural beauty and diversity of our state. Fay has been a real champion of Birmingham Botanical Gardens through the years. Her plant group- just renamed FBI Perennial Society in her honor- is one of the strongest volunteer forces at The Gardens. Fay began the Fall Fiesta (now the Fall Plant Sale) to sell their perennials and was twice chairman of the Spring Plant Sale. She served on the Master Plan Committee (1982-9), as President of the Auxiliary (1983-5) and for many years as a member of the Board of Trustees. She has also beautified The Gardens, from the handsome trees honoring her thirteen grandchildren,

2

to funding the popular Ireland Room and the Ireland Iris Garden with Bill- to whom she has been married for 60 years. In 1994, Fay was awarded the Ida C. Burns Volunteer of the Year Award. This year she is The Garden’s nominee for the Association of Fundraising Professional’s National Philanthropy Day celebration on November 13. Please congratulate her – thanks to Fay Baby (both the lady and the fork lift) The Gardens are moving ahead.

Planting Seeds for the Future – Peggy Balliet says that she is not a gardener. Her passion is building hospitals in Africa. Together with her husband Michael and dedicated volunteers from Birmingham’s Independant Presbyterian Church, she has helped establish hospitals and clinics in Kenya and Zambia. Peggy, however, does care about The Gardens and made a recent bequest commitment to its endowment fund, and is thus a member of The Gardens’ Perennial Society. Peggy’s planned gift will honor her mother Belle Gafford, who was head of Federated Garden ClubsDistrict Three when The Gardens were just beginning. Mrs. Gafford helped fund the new botanical gardens and, through a bequest, her daughter will help insure its future. If you would like to follow their example, please contact Olivia Alison, Director of Development, at 205.414.3961 or oalison@ bbgardens.org. We will be happy to send you a brochure about The Perennial Society with suggestions for estate planning. The information is also available on our website.

carOl hagOOd Carol Hagood is an enthusiastic education docent who greets the school children arriving at The Gardens plaza throughout the school year. She considers Birmingham Botanical Gardens one of the most interesting and inviting city spaces and delights in sharing a few of her early mornings each month to explore The Gardens with its young visitors. “Their joy in being here and their interest in all there is to see—as well as the beauty of The Gardens—are a tonic,” she says. “I leave here feeling refreshed and upbeat.” Carol’s own school days were filled with scouting, camping and other outdoor fun that fueled her love of nature. Later she enjoyed a lengthy career with Southern Progress Corporation (the Southern Living Company). Her work as a book and magazine editor for SPC gave her the opportunity to see the California coastline, the lush Vermont countryside, Wyoming’s Wind River valley, the Louisiana bayou, and the red rocks of Arizona—which piqued her interest in the endless variations of landscapes in natural settings.

Although she is busy at Birmingham-Southern, Carol still includes time each month to be an education docent, because she believes deeply in the importance of the program. “These days,” she says, “when television, computers, and electronic toys compete with outdoor play for so much of young people’s time, it’s more important than ever to involve them with the natural world.” She is impressed with the quality of the six programs offered to school groups, which apply directly to subjects that children are studying in school and offer a hands-on, experiential approach to complement classroom work. She is proud that in the past year the docent group, now totaling 53, conducted memorable field trips for more than 10,000 area school children.

After more than twenty years with SPC (along with other work as a health educator in the mountains of Carolina, and on the faculty or staff of Vanderbilt University, the Universities of Tennessee and North Carolina, and UAB), Carol took early retirement in 2001. She began more volunteer work while also writing for the college magazine at her alma mater Birmingham-Southern. After trying several volunteer jobs around town, her love of the outdoors led her to groups such as the Friends of Shades Creek and the education docent program at The Gardens. Carol credits more experienced docents in the program with helping her learn a great deal about the docent program very quickly, and she states, that there’s not a more congenial group around.

Helping the children to learn has encouraged her to continue learning more about the world around us. Now that Birmingham-Southern has added an Urban Environmental Studies major to its academic program, Carol plans to add this major to her BSC English major. Meanwhile, as time permits, she enjoys traveling to writing conferences around the country with her daughter, a graduate student in English who shares her love of the outdoors. Last June, they traveled to Boothbay Harbor, Maine, for a Nature and Environmental Writers meeting of the College and University Educators group, where Carol did a presentation on the work of Alabama-based conservation photographer Beth Maynor Young. If you would like to make a difference in a child’s life, contact Carolyn Snow, Volunteer Coordinator, at 205.414.3962 or csnow@bbgardens.org for more information about our docent program.

Reviewed by Gina Robertson Tim Richardson is a respected landscape critic and founding editor of New Eden magazine. He has also served as gardens editor for Country Life and landscape editor for Wallpaper. Previous books range the gamut from landscape design to the history of confections, but his current book tackles the topic of Avant Gardeners. The designers Richardson picked demonstrate daring in their experimental and unorthodox gardens. The book alternates between essays and pictures in an attempt to capture the essence of what avant gardening is. Bright colored pages frame essays with themes from landscape conceptualism to psychotopia. Between these colored sections are beautifully photographed images with write ups that are thought provoking and just the right length for a great coffee table book. The pictures show the work of big name designers such as Martha Schwartz and some perhaps unknown and surprising gardens such as the Hofu City Crematorium in Yamaguchi, Japan where several gardens were created to invoke feelings of consolation and contemplation. Overall the book provides imaginative fodder for anyone interested in gardening. It spans from the serious to the whimsical with fantastic images of how gardens are advancing all over the world.

5

The Archives & Rare Book room officially opened on August 22 with a beautiful opening reception to celebrate. We would love for you to come by and see what was once a jumbled mess now transformed into a beautiful collection of material worthy of an archival collection. All of this hard work was done by archivist and Library Assistant Jason Kirby. With his knowledge of history and preservation it was truly a labor of love. Some highlights of the collection include antique seed catalogs, authentic Japanese tea ceremony items, The George Stritikus Collection, a miniature of Toshin-an (tea house), more than 300 rare books dating back to 1676, plant fossils and original Japanese prints.

gO O d t h i n g s grOw i n g … in the gardens Executive Director, Fred Spicer

The purported demise of Cornus florida, flowering dogwood, has been making news for quite some time. At one time, entire nurseries and woodlands were completely devastated, and homeowners and property managers lost significant numbers of trees ranging in age from young to old. Though these losses were acute, flowering dogwood is still a common sight in Alabama fields, forests and gardens, and it still makes a first-rate ornamental small tree. As our wonderful fall season winds on, its brilliant fruit and fall color display will become highly noticeable.

Cornus florida struts its shiny red fall color at the edge of the Kaul Wildflower Garden.

Cornus florida is the quintessential four-season small tree with ornamental interest in spring, summer, fall and winter. Flowering occurs in mid- to late April; large cream-to-white bracts (pink-to-reddish in selected cultivars) provide the show. This occurs before the leaves emerge, and the sparkling display is shown to great effect against leafless branches. Summer foliage on healthy trees is lustrous medium green. Fall color ranges from brilliant scarlet to dark burgundy (with rare hints of orange-yellow), and in our area reaches its peak in early to mid-November. The glossy red, football-shaped fruits begin coloring in September and persist until

taken by birds and small mammals. In the winter, elegant horizontal branching and tightly ridged and furrowed, dark brown bark become evident. Despite so-called dogwood decline being somewhat overstated on a macro level, flowering dogwood struggles when grown improperly. Cornus florida requires well-drained, acid soils; in our area it must have some light shade. Afternoon shade is the most beneficial; high, filtered shade is ideal. In nature, the healthiest trees are typically found in situations with high light and good air drainage: in fields, at forest edges and gaps, and in young woodlands. With its shallow, fibrous roots it does not compete well with turfgrasses; in addition, lawn fertilizers and chemical regimes can cause root injury. Conditions less than optimal promote problems, including dogwood anthracnose (caused by Discula destructiva, a fungus) and powdery mildew. Physical injury to trunks from over-mulching and turf management equipment promotes attack from dogwood borer, which can ultimately cause fatal damage. The name for the dogwood genus, Cornus, comes from cornu, Latin for horn; the wood of flowering dogwood is very dense and hard, and was formerly used for boxes, combs and shuttles on hand looms. See our beautiful, old trees in the Kaul Wildflower Garden. Learn all about flowering dogwoods, and their many beautiful cultivars, at the The Gardens’ library.

(above) Onion-shaped flower buds contrast with the deep red, autumn leaves of Cornus florida. (below left) The main flower display of Cornus florida is provided by enlarged bracts; the true flowers are small, pale yellow & in the center. (below right) Ripening in early fall, the glossy red, football-shaped fruits of Cornus florida are important food for migratory songbirds.

In 2008, 95% of the participants – mostly children – continued to attended free of charge. Children’s programs have been mostly life science-based, hands-on field trips supporting the Alabama State Course of Study, aligned with the National Science Education Standards. Adult life-enrichment classes in art, travel, crafts, food and human wellness continued to be popular. Horticultural Therapy has continued to generate incredible community interest in both on- and off-site programs. The report may be downloaded from the Education landing page of the The Gardens’ website (www. bbgardens. org.) Hard copies may be obtained by calling 205.414.3951. Tax Savings via Year End Gifts Development Director, Olivia Alison

As the holiday season approaches, please consider a year end gift to help keep The Gardens green and growing. Such a gift may also provide you with 2008 income tax savings. If you itemize your deductions, charitable gifts can lower your taxes. The savings depend on your tax bracket. For example, for those of you in the 28% income tax bracket, the after-tax cost would be just $720 of a $1000 gift. Gifts of stock also make excellent tax sense, even in the current market. If you give stock bought years ago for $500 and now worth $5000, for example, you will receive both a tax deduction for $5,000 and will avoid paying $4500 worth of capital gains tax on the stock. While we realize that tax deductions are rarely the sole reason for generosity to The Gardens, we hope that you will take advantage of tax wise savings if they apply to your situation. You can support The Gardens with your year end gift by calling 205.414.3960 or visiting www.bbgardens.org.

Meet Sheenae Westmoreland, Membership Assistant I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Education with an Instructional Design emphasis. My goal is to open a not for profit arts program to provide underprivileged children with access to the arts. After graduation I embarked on a career as a social worker providing social services to those less fortunate through a state agency. After six years I decided to take time away and pursue my love for art. During my hiatus from social services I began focusing on my art career, and happened upon this opportunity at the Gardens, it was an opportunity that I could not pass up as I am surrounded by beauty everyday. Working here has also given me behind the scenes access of the ins and outs of running a not for profit organization.

I was born in Cleveland, Ohio and at age thirteen my family relocated to Birmingham, Alabama. Throughout my childhood I was creative and was involved in extracurricular activities that enhanced my creativity including art, music, writing, and drama. I attended the University of Alabama— Birmingham and received my bachelor’s degree in art history, with a double minor in sociology and history.

Most of my time not spent working is focused on creating and promoting my artwork, and I am also working on my second novel. For fun and relaxation enjoy traveling, live music, hiking, and spending time with my friends, and family.
