A huge thank you is due (I hope not overdue!) to all of the volunteers who have worked so hard on this year’s Fall Plant Sale and Antiques at The Gardens. Antiques’ chairs Barbara Burton and Katie Baker Lasker and their committee have put together a team of local tastemakers and dealers from across the country that is sure to inspire you. Dozens of volunteers – too many to name (sorry!) – have been raising and buying plants, and stand ready to help make your garden more beautiful, and your gardening efforts more rewarding than ever before. Don’t miss either one of these annual Gardens’ fundraisers: details are in this issue. Fall is my favorite season in Birmingham. I’ve said that since moving here (and no, it’s not because my birthday hits at this time of year: I’ve stopped counting)! I think it’s often our “longest” season, or longest-feeling season, anyway, and I like that notion. Fall makes me a little nostalgic for back-to-school, too; there’s a poignancy about seeing the earnestness in the faces of the children who come out for our free, science-based field trips. So much potential! As much as I don’t miss (at all) the bitter cold of the northeast, where I grew up, I completely embrace the crisp fall weather and the sweaters and the turtlenecks and the corduroy. And then there’s the fall color and that unique, sparkling quality of light. Gardeners welcome fall with notebooks full of ambitious plans and active verbs: digging, turning, amending, dividing, planting, raking, composting, harvesting and more. I’d add pruning, but that will need to wait until after our first couple of hard freezes, which usually start around mid-November. Fall pruning before then can interfere with plant dormancy, and stir bursts of growth that will die off come winter. So put your shears away until then. There’s plenty of other tasks to complete.

Local Girl Scout Troop Supports The Gardens through Volunteer Conservation Project How the program works

The Gardens project

When Birmingham Botanical Gardens provides an opportunity for youths to build their skills in community service and conservation, we are investing in our community’s future. Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama encourages girls to engage in community projects in order for them to learn new skills while contributing to their local community. Past projects at The Gardens have included making an environmental education kiosk, controlling exotic-invasive plant species, trail improvements and lath house work. Youths are encouraged to visit The Gardens and suggest projects of their own, but also meet with Director of Horticulture James Horton.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens Pollinator Demonstration Site for Discovery Fieldtrip

The Gardens’ projects generally fall into two categories: leadership projects and general community service projects. Leadership projects require the groups to do project design, planning and coordination as well as implementation. Leadership projects are appropriate for Girl Scouts seeking a Silver or Gold Award and school students doing an honor project. The general community service projects are usually group projects, although some can be done by individuals. They usually entail tasks that can be implemented during one or two work sessions.

Jacie, Madeline, Emma, Perry and Georgia are five young women from Troop 31017. In July they began work on a pollinator demonstration/education site for The Gardens. The plot will be used as a site location for a new Discovery Field Trip slated to begin in Spring of 2015. Two of the girls, Jacie and Madeline Herring, are beekeepers, maintaining their own hive. They became interested in this project due to the growing concern about the decline in honey bees and native pollinator bees. Another project team member Perry Dowell is the daughter of a beekeeper and has learned a great deal about bee conservation and has assisted with education programs for children over the past six years. Another member, Georgia, is a certified Alabama Water Watch monitor-Jr. division. Emma is a Jr. Master Gardener and has an interest in butterfly ecology. All of these girls are very environmentally aware; in addition to their interest in pollinators, they also hold Alabama Water Watch certifications-Junior division and one is even a Junior Master Gardener. These five girls are very service-oriented and want to give to the community in a way that will educate people as well as protect our natural resources. The general consensus about their project? “This is so cool!” The girls are utilizing both local and national resources including The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, www.xerces.org.

Fifty years ago on October 27, 1964 Birmingham Botanical Society, Inc. (dba Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens) was born from Birmingham Botanical Gardens Advisory Committee, which had been formed six months prior by the Birmingham Park and Recreation Board. The Park Board formally approved the Society with the President of the Society being Dr. Lee F. Turrington, who had served in a similar capacity as the chairmen of the advisory committee. Other officers were: Mrs. Hugh (Gillian Goodall) Comer, vice president Mrs. Hugh (Barbara Orr) Kaul, secretary, and Tom McClellan III., treasurer. The advisory committee recommended formation of the membership society as a more effective means of promoting interest in and development of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Sassafras albidum is one of our most consistent native trees for fall color. Unnoticed perhaps throughout the rest of the year, but in mid- to late October, it lights up roadsides, woodland edges and other sunny places with its warm and brilliant display of purple-red, yellow and, at its best, burnt orange (right). It makes a surprisingly good ornamental and is handsome in all seasons. Bright yellow-green flowers appear on leafless stems in late Marchearly April (far right) and the summer foliage is typically a lush medium-green; mature trees often have a cloud-like puffiness (bottom left). Owing to its sympodial (y-shaped) branching, the winter aspect is strikingly horizontal for a tree with a generally upright habit. The young twigs are greenish and the bark on mature trees is red-brown and deeply fissured. As a bonus, it’s easy to grow in well-drained acid soils, has a moderately fast growth rate, and after establishment it’s a true droughtbuster. In the wild it will sucker and make small colonies (bottom right); in cultivation it’s an easy task to prune out any undesirables. Sources list sassafras as maturing to 50’ tall and more, but in our area, a 40-footer would be considered quite large.

Sassafras leaves are variable, having no lobes, three lobes and – yes – both left- and right-handed “mittens,” sometimes on the same branch. The flowers are delicate, likely to be lost among, or mistaken for, newly-emerging leaves by casual observers. Bees and other pollinating insects, however, are keen for them. Female trees flower more heavily than male trees, and their blue-black fruit, maturing in mid-summer, are seldom seen due to the numerous birds which quickly eat and disperse them. Sassafras is a valuable larval host for numerous butterflies and moths, including the large and charismatic spicebush and Palmedes swallowtails, and imperial and Promethea silkmoths. Don’t be alarmed at the sight of their non-fatal leaf-munching! Safrole, the essential oil in sassafras, was once widely used as a fragrance and flavoring, not only for root beer, but for many other products as well, and folklore uses were legion. However, since being confirmed as a potential carcinogen, safrole is banned for sale in the US. Today, good root beer is flavored with methly salicylate (oil of wintergreen), and the ground up sassafras leaves you might use as file to thicken your gumbo have had the safrole removed.

SHRUBS-Study landscape to determine plant needs. Check early varieties of camellias. You may want to replace those damaged in spring by late freezes. After fall growth is completed, spray all shrubs with a fungicide.

LAWNS-Plant seed of winter grasses where situation prevents planting permanent grasses. Winter seeds will appear soon. Stop fertilization three weeks before frost.

•

ROSES--Protect fall crops of blossoms from aphids and thrips. Keep plants healthy.

•

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS-Last chance for planting perennials and biennials. Old clumps of perennials may be divided. Plant peonies.

•

BULBS-Spring-flowering bulbs may be planted late this month in North Alabama. Delay planting in South Alabama.

•

MISCELLANEOUS--Clean up infestations of insects on azaleas, camellias, boxwoods, gardenias, hollies, etc. If oil spray is needed, don’t use in freezing weather. Build compost bin or box;. leaves will be falling soon. Move houseplants indoors.

•

VEGETABLE SEED-Plant hardy vegetables and root crops.

•

VEGETABLE PLANTS-Plant cabbage, collards, cauliflower, celery, Brussels sprouts, and onion sets.

SHRUBS-Shrub plantings can be made. Water when needed. Note varieties of camellias in bloom. Start mulching all shrubs that do not have a mulch.

•

LAWNS--Continue to mow lawns until no new growth is noticeable.

•

ROSES-Continue insect and disease control practices. New rose catalogs will be coming in. Study closely; add some new varieties to your list.

•

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS-Visit flower shows and gardens. List desirable varieties of mums. Clean up flower beds immediately after first killing frost.

•

BULBS--Plant tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses, Dutch irises, anemones, and ranunculuses. Watch planting depth. Dig caladiums; clean and store in warm place.

•

MISCELLANEOUS-Renew mulch around shrubs and rose beds. Loosen mulches that have packed down. Spray with oils before freezing weather to kill scale, mites, etc. Remove all dead stems and trash from flower beds. Transplant into small pots any cuttings taken earlier.

•

Shane Connolly opens the Red Diamond Lecture Series at Antiques at The Gardens on Thursday, October 2 at 1 p.m. Connolly was awarded the Royal Warrant by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales in 2006, becoming the official supplier of flowers for royal events shortly after his successful floral design at the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles. On April 29, 2011, he would design all floral arrangements for the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Shane Connolly and Company achieved international fame servicing these royal events, but their reach extends to private parties, weddings, corporate events and receptions. Connolly has also authored four books: Table Flowers, Wedding Flowers, The Language of Flowers and A Year in Flowers.

Mario Buatta will complement Connolly’s talk with his own on Friday, October 3 at 11 a.m. Buatta is a premier American decorating talent that has been working in design for over 50 years. “The Prince of Chintz” comes to The Gardens as he celebrates the release of his first book, Mario Buatta: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration. After launching his firm in 1963, Buatta filled his client roster with an impressive list of celebrities and moguls; from Henry Ford II to Barbara Walters, from Nelson Doubleday to Billy Joel. Buatta oversaw the design for the Blair House in Washington, D.C., and he was responsible for the design of pop-star Mariah Carey’s posh New York triplex that was once featured on a one-hour episode of MTV Cribs.
