Dear Member, February ended up being a very busy month again for a variety of reasons. Neil and the greenkeeping team managed to ensure all the bunkers have been topped up and then moved their attention onto the greens maintenance. The storms brought a unwelcome interruption to the proceedings however thankfully not too much damage was caused. Looking forwards over the coming weeks we still have the remaining 3 bunkers to fill in as well as the planned path work. We are waiting on the delivery of the materials for the warm up nets however this should be delivered soon. Spending time with the committee, it is really nice to see the level of effort going into the social side of the club for members and I would encourage all members to support the events. The first event of the year is the Quiz night on 18th March. There is also a 'club mixer' event on Friday 15th April which is aiming to bring all sections of the club together. As the new captains have now officially 'driven in', I would like to wish, Duncan, Vicky and Dick an enjoyable and successful year ahead. Thank you to our outgoing captains, Martin, Sue and Keith for their efforts in what was another disrupted 12 months.

Kind Regards Stephen Norton, General Manager

Course Report from our Course Manager - Neil Crittenden What a contrast in the weather from January to February. We have had every type of weather Patten to deal with including Storms from Dudley, Eunice, and Franklin all in one week. Storm Eunice was the worst with 70mph winds causing damage to trees and the driving range net and meant we had to close the course for your safety. The wet weather has returned and the course is struggling in some areas. We try and keep muddy areas to a minimum with post and rope and applications of grit sand to aid drying.

On a sad note we had more damage to the 5th Green from someone on a motorbike, this mindless act of vandalism breaks our hearts as we put a lot of time and effort into the Greens only to be ruined overnight, if anyone hears or sees anything please contact the club, I’d rather have a false alarm then this happen.

As outlined in my previous report, the course renovations took place as planned at the start of March. As you may expect, not everything quite went to plan with the weather turning on us as core harvester developing issues as we carried out the work. Thankfully the team worked hard, adapted and we achieved everything we hoped we would get done. Please be patient over the coming weeks as the greens recover from this process ready for a busy playing season ahead.

(See below for a picture of some of the team working to clear the cores manually after the breakdown of the core harvester)

So why do we hollow tine? It’s the physical removal of cores of turf from a playing surface. The holes are generally 13-16mm in diameter and of varying depths depending on the reason for the tine. Course traffic which includes Golfers and Greenkeeping equipment causes the ground to become compacted and hardened. This means drainage is less efficient and the grass’s roots are prevented from absorbing oxygen and nutrients. Hollow tinning allows the compacted turf to expand and air and moisture to be more easily absorbed. The coring helps address the problem of thatch. (Thatch is a layer of grass stems, roots, and debris that settle and accumulate over time.) A thin layer is acceptable but too much thatch will hold water like a sponge. Tinning also removes accumulated fibre in the grass’s root zone. It allows for the exchange of a poor soil for a better one through top dressing. That’s why the greens are normally covered in sandy top dressing immediately after they’re cored. In addition, coring allows for overseeding: another effective way of improving the quality of the playing surface.

Half Way Refreshments - a reminder We are pleased to announce we will be offering a selection of food and drink from our Driving Range Reception. This menu will be available only via the ESP Elite Live app and food/drink can be ordered to collect as you make your way from the 9th to the 10th hole. We recommend ordering once you reach the 9th tee. Please ensure that this doesn't impact pace of play and affect other groups. We will continue to review and monitor the selection available.
