Burhill Junior Update

January - June 2024

Introduction from Graeme...

Burhill Junior Section is a proud part of the fabric here at the club, and this newsletter is intended to keep members up to date with what has happened through the 1st half of the year.

A Busy Start to 2024

It has been a hectic start to 2024 for the Juniors at Burhill. We now have a full membership of 176 golfers, with a further 62 on the waiting list.

We’ve welcomed 46 new members to the section this year, many of whom are just beginning their golfing journey.

At the time of writing, our membership is split 90:10 boy/girl which is an area of focus. We span the full spectrum of golfing ability – at the time of writing the handicaps fall into the following categories:

Handicaps under 5 = 24 golfers

Handicaps 5 – 18 = 45 golfers

Hanidcaps Over 18 = 47 golfers

Without handicap = 60 golfers

Junior Development Programme

Given the broad range of abilities in our Junior Section, it is essential that we provide a full range of activities to cover all ages and abilities.

For our newer and younger members, this includes a regular commitment to coaching sessions, and club nights – where coaching,

some course time and cheesy chips all combine to provide a fun platform.

At the elite end, our Platinum (six players) and Gold (eight players) squads are supported more specifically around their coaching and competition needs, to enable them to fulfil their true potential.

All of this is made possible by the generous donations from the adult membership and Burhill Golf Limited, to which we are hugely indebted, and I hope this newsletter shows the extent of how far your GBP20 goes each year!

Team Events

The Surrey Interclub

This is a team and individual stableford event with a minimum of seven players competing from each club.

Each year we visit West Byfleet, Hindhead, Effingham, Surbiton, Farnham and Bramley, as well as hosting our event. This all leads up to the Finals Day on October 6th which Burhill will be hosting this year.

After two rounds, we are in a strong position lying third in the team leaderboard, just two stableford points back. We’re also leading the Nett OoM with Daniel T, and currently have 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the Gross OoM with Finlay, Aaron and Harry W all in contention.

Surrey Rookie League (4BBB)

It has been a slow start for the u18 team, suffering defeats at the hands of Cuddington and Farleigh, along with a draw away to Kingswood. However, a resounding victory at home to Kingswood this weekend, leaves us a chance of advancing to the semi-finals, though it will likely take a perfect record to advance in our final two matches.

Our u14 team is entirely made up of debutants this year, and hence this year is one of learning. An early draw with Kingswood was followed by a narrow defeat to Cuddington and comprehensive wins against Kingswood and Tyrrells Wood at home, hence with positive

results, we can advance to the semi-finals. Both the u14 and u18 last won this event in 2022. Well done to Jude, Myles, Reiss, Charlie F, Darragh, Aurelius, Tommy, Josh J and Harry N for all getting their Burhill match records up and running.

The Guildford & District League

It has been a great start to the GDL season with two resounding victories over Surbiton both home and away and also Camberley Heath at home. In addition to the return fixture, we also have home and away fixtures to Windlesham. With the right results, we will hopefully progress to the Finals Day on August 22nd, where we’ll try to go one better than last year’s second place!

The Christies Cup

2024 will be another year that this trophy alludes us, after going down to a 3rd round defeat at a wet and windy Farnham recently. With just three players in the team, and two stableford scores counting it can be tricky to advance, which was proven to be the case.

Individual Success

County Champions

In April, Herry Ji became the Surrey Ladies Champion at Hankley Common , this was then followed by James Brash becoming the Men’s champion at Tandridge in early June. Both won the events after 36 holes of strokeplay and four rounds of matchplay, with an honourable mention to Kuan Zhou for his tied third place. It is remarkable to have both County Champions as part of our Junior section.

South-East England u16 Championships

Rounds of -1 and -2 were enough to crown Harry Weatherhead champion in this elite event, held at Hockley GC. There were also very strong top 10 finishes for Finlay Fergusson and Aaron Moody.

Surrey u12 Championships

Our very own Harry Wang carded a 5 over par round to win the Paul Casey Trophy at Milford GC.

Burhill Mens Gold Medal

Junior Captain Freddie Surgey recorded a remarkable 64 on the Old course to win his 3rd straight Gold Medal, with Kuan Zhou in 2nd place (70) and Max Gibbs in 3rd (71).

Peter McEvoy Trophy

Congratulations to Alex Wells on his 2nd place in this historic amateur event at Copt Heath GC.

Junior Tours

Surrey Rookie Tour

Many of our u14s compete regularly on this excellent tour around the courses of Surrey. Congratulations to Tommy R, Harry N, Oliver M, Josh J, Darragh S and Harry Wang.

British Junior Golf Tour

Some of our juniors head further afield to seek competition and congratulations go to Grace Taylor on some excellent performances including a win.

Surrey Junior Opens

Early success this year has come with a win for Aaron Moody at Foxhills GC, and 2nd place for Harry Weatherhead at Effingham GC.

Sir Henry Cooper

Championships

Junior captain, Freddie Surgey, continued his great form with a stunning 2nd place finish at Kings Hill GC in a field containing the top junior golfers in the land over 54 holes. James Brash finished a very impressive T6 also.

Critchley Salver

Contgratualtions to Annabel Peaford who picked Continued On The Next Page

up the Critchley Salver in May with rounds of (an incredible, -9) 66 & 75 at Sunningdale.

Knockouts

We have also made excellent progress with the first-ever running of the Crockett Cup, our new 4BBB competition, with the first round fully complete, we now proceed to the quarter-finals. Our matchplay event, the Christine Bond Trophy has also progressed to the 2nd round, with just 8 players left.
