Thornbury Member News - April

MEMBER NEWS

Dear Member, I trust you are enjoying the start of the season and looking forward to the May Bank Holiday weekend. Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for choosing to renew their membership with us this year. April marked the beginning of the new membership year, and I am delighted to see such a positive renewals campaign throughout March and April. Over the last month several exciting projects commenced both on and off course and I am pleased to say that we are nearing completion of them all. The greens team have been busy completing the renovation of tees and bunkers whilst contractors have completed the other projects. The driving range drainage project has been completed, and I would like to thank our members and our guests for their understanding whilst the range was closed. The drainage work was an essential requirement and will make a significant improvement to the outfield throughout the winter. We do need to overseed the drainage lines which in time will improve the visual aesthetics of the outfield, however we will only sow the seed once we have favourable weather forecast. The driving range will undergo further maintenance throughout the season, in terms of a general re-paint / refresh and new outfield lighting. Although this should not cause any closures of the range, we are likely to need to close several bays to allow works to be completed. I am in the process of finalising this with contractors and will commu-nicate the dates of the works. The 4th Tee and pond project is nearing completion, and we anticipate this being completed next week. The new turf for the tee and surrounding is currently being laid, however these areas will remain as GUR for a while longer. We are hopeful to have the white tee in use early June. The fountain will be installed in the coming weeks and the finishing touches made. I have received lots of positive feedback already and the resident ducks are already enjoying splashing around in the pond!

The course irrigation project is now underway, and the contractors arrived on site this week and are making headway on the first phase of the works. They are laying the groundwork in preparation for the new water tank and pumphouse which will be located behind the greenkeepers building. Once this initial work is completed, they will turn their attention to oncourse activities and link the main irrigation lines from the irrigation lake to the new pumphouse. I will give you a more in-depth update over the next few weeks and in the meantime should you have any questions please don’t hesitate to speak with Robin or myself.

We have submitted our planning application this month for the pergola. It will be positioned on the main patio and give us a versatile outdoor space which can be used all year round. Comprising of a retractable roof, glass panel sides, heaters and lights, it will cover approximately two thirds of the patio. I will keep you updated on the progress of our application and hopefully we can share some good news with you in the near future. Our new summer food and beverage menu launched recently and you will notice the return of some of our favourite dishes. We have kept our price increases to a minimum; however, we are no exception to the ongoing cost increases. We do need to reflect this in our pricing and will keep this under constant review. Last week I visited several bars in Thornbury to complete a local pricing review. My findings were as expected; the bars I visited had all increased their prices and now positioned significantly higher than our premium lagers, such as Moretti for example.

The members’ breakfast will cost £7.75 moving forward, this still offers excellent value as you receive your 10% discount and a hot drink of your choice. Members’ discount will remain at 10% when using your levy card and I would like to remind you that levy is only valid for 12 months for the date of the initial top up transaction. We would like to run more members events this year and we would value your opinion, so we will be sending a survey out over the coming weeks and would appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts regarding members’ events. Would you like to see more social events, quiz nights, tribute nights, summer BBQ or NYE parties? We have tried to run events in the past but generally we have had to cancel due to lack of interest, therefore your feedback will help us to put together events that you would like to attend.

YOUR COURSE NEEDS YOU!

DIVOT EVENING 26th MAY FROM 5PM

FOLLOWED BY A THANK YOU BBQ! To give us an idea of catering requirements, please can you to register your attendance on Master Scoreboard.

“Calling all members and guests” We have set aside the evening of Thursday 26th May for our annual Divot Evening. Your help and support has been extremely welcomed in previous years by the green keeping team and we would greatly appreciate your support again. The plan for the evening is to meet at approx 5:00 pm, separate into groups and commence thereafter. We hope to cover all holes on the main course and would envisage this to take 2-3 hours. Once complete, all volunteers will head to the clubhouse for BBQ buffet. It would be helpful if anyone planning to attend could sign up on the Master Scoreboard, so we have an idea of attendees. All equipment will be provided, however if you have your own bucket and gloves feel free to bring them with you.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM DAN HARRIS I am delighted to announce that Dan Harris joined the greenkeeping team as Deputy Course Manager this month. I am sure a number of you may remember Dan from his previous greenkeeping time at Thornbury. Dan left our team in 2017, moving to Chipping Sodbury GC before commencing his most recent role in landscaping. Dan is looking forward to returning to Thornbury and playing a part in moving the course forward. I am sure you will join me in extending a warm welcome when you see him at the club. Dan Said, “I am delighted to join the team as Deputy Course Manager. Thornbury is a great venue, and I am excited to be returning and supporting the team as we continue to make improvements on course. I look forward to seeing you on course in the weeks ahead.”

EMPLOYEE OF THE QUARTER

WELL DONE KENDLE MCCROSSAN

Kendle McCrossan has been selected as Employee of our first quarter. The nominations are put forward by the team, and although there were a number of great team members nominated, Kendle’s name kept reoccurring which made it a conclusive outcome. Well done Kendle! Please congratulate him when you see him upon your next visit.
