The LMPA has been providing a central enrolments service to the Bendigo and Swan Hill communities allowing families to have choice as well as simplifying the often challenging task of enrolling in kindergarten. “We are extremely pleased to be moving forward with the next stage of the organisations development and growth, firstly through the change of our name to Shine Bright and secondly, through the construction of our first integrated childcare service,” an LMPA spokesperson said. “The new name, Shine Bright, will be introduced during the second half of 2017 to all 15

eavy rains and soil moisture can cause the earth beneath your home or business to become over-saturated, resulting in the ground being unable to support the your building’s foundations. As water levels subside and the ground begins to dry out, cracks may appear in the walls or gaps appear between the skirting boards and floor. This may be a sign the building and the ground beneath it is subsiding. Inspection by a structural engineering firm such as Mainmark can be the first step to addressing and repairing the problem. Subsidence can occur across large or small areas over a period of time or as an immediate reaction to nearby activity or natural events. Different footing systems such as those found in very old buildings or in homes with extensions or alterations perform differently. In reactive clay soils, deeper footings move less seasonally than shallow footings. An addition or extension alongside an existing home will settle differently to the original building, with most of the settlement of new footings typically occurring in the first five years after construction. Renovations or nearby
construction may also change the condition of the ground, particularly if excavation is taking place. Often, a poorly supported excavation can allow nearby soil to slip, causing adjoining footings to sink. Heavy traffic and the vibration of machinery can also move or displace the soil. Addressing the problem of sinking foundations as soon as warning signs present themselves, can help minimise further damage. The process for repairing foundations is known as underpinning. N the past week or so the weather has certainly changed with more rain, giving the soil a beautiful profile – making for easy digging, just rife for planting. I can’t believe bare root season is only four weeks away. I hope you have your orders in for your roses, ornamental and fruit trees, berries, strawberries and asparagus. There’s lots of trees in short supply again this year, so visit your garden centre and order what you need to make sure you don’t miss out. As most gardeners would know we have terrible soil, so the more you do to improve it the better your garden and plants will be. If you haven’t started preparing the ground for your trees, whether they are potted or bare root, now is a great time to get started. Prepare the size hole you need, dig out the clay and stone and mix some good soil and composted manures and/or rotted organic matter with it. Before returning your mix it to the hole, put a good bit of gypsum in the bottom of the hole, this will help break up the remaining clay. Also rough the hole sides up, as a smooth hole will dam water, which will eventually rot the roots of the plant. Veggie patches will need to be dug over and topped up with fertilisers and organic matter, if you haven’t already done so. Companion planting your veggies will help with their growth, here’s a few to choose from: Broccoli with peas, lettuce and cabbage and beetroot with onions, cauliflower and lettuce.

I throw mine back onto the garden beds every year, they don’t take long to rot down and they feed the trees they have fallen from. Nature is a wonderful thing. Protect any potted plants sensitive to frost, move them under cover or pop some shade cloth over them. If you have early flowering orchids watch for snails and slugs and protect the early flower spikes from frost. It’s just about your last chance to plant spring flowering bulbs this month or just into June, so get your skates on and plant away. A pot of colour, pansies or viola, with bulbs popping through looks magical and is a great idea for mum on Mother’s Day – May 14. Cyclamen and chrysanthemum are stalwarts for Mum as well, there are plenty of beautiful ones to choose from. Happy Gardening
