Choose and plant your choices wisely A

FTER shivering through some pretty cold nights and lots of frosts there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel with early spring flowers and ornamental apricots starting to bloom. Don’t get me wrong I love winter, but a little sun makes you feel great and ready for a new season in the garden. Now is your last chance to plant bare rooted trees, but make sure you know the size of the area you are wanting to fill. I recently read an article suggesting trees for small areas, that would reach a height in excess of eight metres and four to eight metres in width – not really suitable for a small space. Sure they will look good while they are young, but as they mature you will have an overgrown garden that you will need to pull out and start all over again. Trees are a long term prospect that you won’t want to be replacing after five years. Many trees have different varieties of the one plant (genus), their shape and height can vary quite a lot. Ornamental pears are a classic and one of the most popular trees grown but it can be confusing if you don’t know what you are looking for. Either do some homework or ask your nursery person what

Spray with a copper fungicide just before bud burst, which will be any time now, so be diligent and keep an eye out – otherwise you’ll be too late. Leaf curl is caused by a fungus that resides in the bark, if left untreated the leaves bubble and look contorted, so the tree cannot grow properly, inhibiting fruit production. If you do miss spraying and curly leaf does occur you can physically remove the leaves, they will reshoot. Spray at leaf drop in

autumn as well. As the weather warms lilly pilly psyillid, which appears as bubbling on the leaf and azalea mites which makes the leaf mottled and whitish in colour, can also occur. Spray with Confidor or use a Confidor tablet in the soil. With another cool morning, I’ll soon be out to finish my rose and fruit tree pruning and weeding among the clucking chickens looking for a bug or two. Happy gardening!
