Challenging times

HAT a lovely welcome to February, cooler weather and rain, I wonder how long this will last? To say the last month was challenging in the garden is an understatement, although with the right preparation for plants and good mulching it should have made it a bit easier, but the wind was so drying. My Japanese maples have really suffered no matter how much water I put on them, the leaves are burnt to blazers, but this morning I notice there are new leaves popping, let’s hope we don’t get so many scorchers this month. This weather pattern reminds me very much of the winter we just had with so many frosts in a row, 13, which is the same number of days over 30 we have just had... hmmm. My fruit trees have been laden with great crops this year, and usually I have enough to share with the birds and the dog, who just loves stone fruit and pears. But this year I’ve been totally cleaned up by the birds in the last few mornings, leaving none for the dog either. Lesson learnt, next year there will be bird netting. So far I haven’t had problems with codling moth or fruit fly (which is becoming more prevalent in Bendigo), but we all need to be diligent as I’ve had many customers at the nursery bringing in damaged fruit. Remove affected fruit from your tree and put it into plastic bags, leave the bags out in the sun for a couple of weeks, cooking the larvae before disregarding. Do not put affected fruit straight into your compost as the larvae will love it and next season the cycle will begin again, but worse. With up three months of warm weather

ahead of us there is still time to plant summer vegetables including tomatoes, basil and zucchini. The ones I’ve just planted are rocketing along while those who planted early should have an abundance of produce now and be busy in the kitchen bottling, pickling and freezing of what you can’t use right now. If your tomatoes have black marks on the bottom of the fruit they have blossomend rot, caused by inconsistent watering and or a calcium deficiency in the soil. Easy to fix for next season, by adding some dolomite lime to your garden beds and when you water, water deeply a couple of times a week and mulch well. Roses will need a light prune now to clean them up, spray for black spot and mildew and insects, there is one spray that will do all of them. After about a week give them a good feed with rose food, giving them a boost for the next flush of flowers in autumn. Cabbage moths have been plentiful around the nursery recently so if this happening in your garden you’ll need to watch out for caterpillar damage, especially on vegetables. With a life cycle from egg to adult in around 30 days, with mature moths living for about 21 days as the life cycle starts again. There are sprays you can use to get rid of them or just squash the caterpillars. Another month and we will be saying goodbye to this hot weather and getting into more seasonal autumnal cycles, with warm days and cooler nights, can’t wait. Until then keep up a good watering regime in the cool of the evening or early morning and start planning and preparing for your autumn plantings. Happy Gardening.
