HE Easter break is over, the parade and festivities done for another year, the Easter bunny has left the building leaving his descendents in my garden, but that’s a hole other story. It’s time now to start trimming back spent flowers, building up garden beds ready for the next big planting season. Perennial flowers are on the wane, roses should be into their last flowering (depending on the weather) and the last of summer vegetables at an end. Time to weed, remove old annuals and vegetables, cut back spent flowers and top up beds with that lovely compost you have been making for the last six months or so. If not get any sort of manure and add it to the now hungry beds. Dig compost into the ground and turn your beds over, ready for your next planting. Any diseased leaves with black spot, rust or powdery mildew should not be put into the compost bin as these diseases will spread throughout the compost – further infecting existing and future growth. Spring bulbs can be sourced and planted in the next few weeks. Tulips need to go into the crisper of the fridge for about a month before planting. Annual winter flowers to plant now are: viola, pansy, calendula, lobelia, fox glove, delphinium, hollyhock and

bedding begonia are just a few. In the veggie patch, Asian greens, mizuna, beetroot, cabbage, broccoli (all the cucurbits), spinach, lettuce, silverbeet, carrots, onions including spring, peas, radish, shallots and more. Potato season is almost upon us too, so start digging and feeding up the ground you are going to use as they need an open friable soil – more next month. Herbs, parsley – curly or Italian, coriander, mint – chocolate/spearmint/ apple to name a few, garlic, fennel, marjoram, thyme, oregano, sage, rosemary and the list goes on. With autumn now in full swing, our trees are certainly putting on a great colour display. It’s the best time now to see what you might like to put into your garden for summer shade in the years to come. A couple of my favorites are Canadian maples – autumn blaze and October glory, they grow quickly, have the best autumn colour and once established are quite drought tolerant. At 12 metres tall and 10 metres wide (depending on the soil), they are a beautiful tree and most gardens will only need one to be a real show stopper. Another maple, crimson century grows to seven metres tall by four metres wide, with burgundy foliage during the year and followed by orange and gold foliage in autumn, again a

really beautiful tree, perfect for smaller gardens. Now finally time for that bunny hunt – no eggs left by these ones.
