Bendigo’s only locally owned newspaper
Science in action BENDIGO’S Discovery Science and Technology Centre is looking for the next great science photographer of our times. As part of the centre’s activities in the lead up to National Science Week, Discovery has launched the Science in Action photography challenge, with some great prizes on offer. “National Science Week, which will take place from 15 to 23 August, is one of the most important events on the science education calendar in Australia and Discovery is looking forward to hosting numerous activities and events, starting with the photography challenge,” Discovery manager Angie Carter said. “The amazing thing is that science is happening around us all the time, but we hardly ever stop to appreciate it. “Through this competition we hope to get people thinking about how science is present in their everyday lives and capture it in a photo.” The competition is open to all ages, and is split into three different age categories – under 12, 13 to 18 and 19 and over. Winners of the competition in each age category will be announced during National Science Week and will win a $200 shopping voucher at the Bendigo Marketplace. Traders fire up to tackle Mitchell Street problem
By ANTHONY RADFORD MITCHELL Street traders have been issued with a call to arms to fight the proposed bus changes in their street. The City of Greater Bendigo council and state government last week unveiled plans aimed at dealing with the chaos created in Mitchell Street when the Department of Transport re-routed every CBD bus down the busy street.
The plans only revealed one option for the buses themselves – to extend the footpaths and have them stop in the left-hand lane of Mitchell Street near the existing bus stops. There has been little support for the plans since their release, and an 80-strong crowd at a public meeting on Tuesday night reinforced that. Traders have been urged to submit an objection, or even their support, for the plans, as council, for
the first time, has indicated they may not be set in stone. Bendigo Traders’ Association president Neil Athorn said the proposal was not a step forward and urged traders to have their say. “The general feeling is this solution is not acceptable,” he said. “If there is enough opposition, will council bend and consider alternatives? “The traders have to stand up and say they are not happy, we
need to be consulted and we need to look closely at the other options out there.” Toyworld owner Mike Hammond, who has been a vocal opponent of the bus changes since the beginning, echoed Mr Athorn’s calls. “I believe now is the time for traders to stand up and say what they want. That is certainly what I will be doing,” he said. Continued Page 7
